    I wanted to share my story with gestational diabetes. I would like to say I am overweight and have family history of diabetes.
    I was tested for gestational diabetes at 11 weeks. I did the 1hr test and failed. So I had to do the 3hr test. I failed that. I'm glad we caught it early. I saw a nutritionist right away. I controlled my blood sugar levels with nutrition for as long as possible. As the baby grew my body became more insulin resistant. So I had to be placed on Metformin. As my pregnancy continued to progress eventually Metformin wasn't cutting it. I had to be placed on insulin. They determined how much insulin I needed based on my body. Unfortunately they gave me to much insulin and I experienced low blood sugar. So the healthcare team lowered the insulin I was taking. All was well after that.
    I hated insulin. My belly was a pin cushion :(
    My OB told me since I tested positive so early for gestational diabetes, I probably had type 2 diabetes and didn't know it. 100% not the case. I saw my primary care doctor before I got pregnant and she said I didn't have diabetes. I was tested a few months after pregnancy and again did not have diabetes.
    BUT I learned so much with this process. I opted to be induced at 39 weeks. It was my first pregnancy so it was a 48hr induction process. With a successful vaginal delivery. My daughter was at a healthy weight. She was 6lbs 14oz at birth. I can only imagine what her weight would of been like other wise.
    HUGE THANK YOU TO SARAH! You helped educate me through your videos. I am so grateful.

    So happy to see this video! Im 25 weeks and have been petrified of doing my GD test :'( not afraid of the test itself, or the idea of needles etc, just reaaaaaally don't want to test positive and I hate the idea that some people just have it and there's nothing you can do about it

    I understand that being overweight and inactive are big risk factors for GD. My only risk factor for it was family history of diabetes, and I got GD even though I'm healthy and actually on the taller, leaner side. So emphasizing the overweight risk factor just made me more shocked and ashamed when I was diagnosed, as if I had done something to cause it. When it was really just bad luck and genetics. So women need to hear that it's not their fault if they do have it, and people need to be educated so they don't judge women who do have it.

    • @izzybailey7562
      @izzybailey7562 4 роки тому +1

      My nutritionist emphasized that a person can not "cause" gestaional diabetes. Yes you can put yourself at higher risk, but it all comes down to that darn placenta and the hormones it controls. I was overwieght and had the family risk factor, but my mom had it once and she was always in very good shape.

      I was swimming throughout my whole pregnancy and still failed the test by 3 points bc my dad and my SO mom's have type 2. So it's genetic too.

    • @dania11789
      @dania11789 Рік тому

      She puts way too much emphasis on weight and doesn’t even mention many of the other “risk factors” just super judgey in a fake happy voice. And notice she liked your reply but didn’t actually comment back to address your concerns.
      This video is horrible.

    I had a horrible time with the gestational diabetes testing with my first pregnancy. I tried to take the test 3 times but the sweet drink you have to drink made me sick and I threw it up each time, invalidating the test. Each time I tried within minutes I was hot and sweaty, my heart was racing and my vision went dark until I threw up. It was really scary, especially the first time. It was also very frustrating because online I was seeing that this was an extremely common reaction for women who have had bariatric surgery but my ob kept having me go back and try again and again. I felt like no one was listening or understood the effects bariatric surgery were on pregnancy. I even called my bariatric surgeon’s office and the nurse there just said, “Oh, that test is hard for everyone.” But when I looked online I saw a bunch of medical journals that said that the test can cause server reactions for bariatric patients. Finally, I refused to go back, I tested my own blood sugar 4 times a day for a week. Not one single high reading so no diabetes. But I am worried about what will happen with my next pregnancies.
    Sarah, I absolutely love you videos; I felt so much more confident through my entire pregnancy because of them. Especially, when I went in for a normal check up and ended up getting induced, I already knew all of the procedures they had to use. So thank you! You made an unplanned induction a lot less scary.
    If you happen to know anything about the effects bariatric surgery can have on pregnancy that would be wonderful! I know it isn’t the most common thing and it feels like there isn’t a lot of reliable information out there. But I know I am not the only one!

    When I was pregnant with my twins, they automatically started with the 2 hour test (but my office did the 2 hr one for all pregnancies). Now I'm pregnant with a singleton (in a different state) and started with the 1 hr. Thankfully I passed both of them 🙌🏼

    Thanks for this video! I just had my first baby 3 months ago at 23 and I had no risk factors for any type of complication and ended up with Gestational Diabetes and Preeclampsia (that went away in the hospital but I went to the OB ER for delayed hemorrhage 2 days after discharge and had developed hypertension again). Bc I had such a dramatic (but not quite traumatic) birth we decided it was best to have our next and final biological child (adopting after this, saving now!!) while we were still stationed here where we trust the medical team fully! It will be closer together than is recommended (9 months from birth to conception if all goes good) but we LOVE the care we received here.

    so i had a hospital birth, i had a midwife whom i chose because she saw me through my first pregnancy but i also had a doctor i had never met before. this doctor told me just by seeing me that my baby would be too big if i gained anything and he would get stuck and die. i saw her a second time after my glucose test(which came out negative) and still told me he would get stuck and die if i gained anything. he was 10 pounds and was easier than my 8 pound baby.

    Question! You mentioned that it’s very common to “fail” the first sugar test...why is that? Because that happened to me! I am in general very healthy and it surprised me a lot to be called back in for the second sugar test. I did “pass” the second one, but I am curious why it’s so easy to fail the first one?

    • @amandacosnett5820

      I could be wrong, but I think they set the number at which someone fails to be pretty low to make sure they catch everyone. They'd rather have people take the 3 hour who end up being fine than to potentially miss diagnosing someone with GD who has it.

    None of my tests were finger pricks. They were all blood draws. 😣 it was awful. (I did have gestational diabetes) they also did check my A1C. I also had a pilonidal cyst. I was told it was common with gestational mommas, but it was never explained to me why. But I guess what you said about infection makes sense! Thank you!
