During the incredible and record breaking winter of 1977-1978, the cold caused the current in the Missouri to drop to almost zero. I was a pilot then and made a flight in a single engine plane from St. Louis to Columbia at 2500 feet and followed the Missouri all the way. I will NEVER forget that the water was perfectly clear and I could see the bottom. There were round turret like structures and other interesting shapes in the sand. I grew up on that river in North St. Louis County and love the Missouri River!
