I thought it would be easy to learn and it might be if I can find a teacher to show me from stage one how to operate it. I so want to make my own music.
Hi Taetro. I liked this video. Thanks man. i'm looking for a new controllerlike this. keystep is too small with everything. BTW do you still use this keyboard? The Novation? any issues with it?
chriss1152 I bought one. It’s mind blowing. I returned the Komplete Kontrol. It’s more advanced and works without NKS which a lot of people have a hard time installing. All it needs is the ability to play whole chords with just one key. All controllers are going to copy this unit.
It's definitely a competitor and they look kind of similar with the light guide but fundamentally they're quite different beasts. The NI KK really only works properly in conjunction with the komplete kontrol plugin, otherwise it's just a bog standard midi controller. Komplete kontrol basically acts as a proxy to any plugin which implements NKS. In that regard it's not a million miles away from Novation's old automap technology which created a wrapper around each of your plugins to accomplish a similar level of control. All the komplete kontrol keyboards features are implemented via the KK software whereas with the sl mkiii they are implemented in the hardware of the keyboard. The sl has a better integration with ableton (possibly via remote scripts) whereas the KK has a more basic implementation (possibly via HUI). In terms of outboard it's just straight midi with the KK whereas the sl has onboard sequencer and advanced arpegiations. Ultimately if you mostly work in the box, don't use ableton and are happy being somewhat tied into NI then the komplete kontrol will give you a lot of fun, and looks pretty sexy to boot. Me I'm torn, I've yet to see an sl mkiii video which shows me how I can browse to a sound close to what I want.
I love how its doing all the stuff .. Its like many different controllers in one. This gear is on my crossheairs, but first i will get me Arturia keystep 37. I actually found out that my PreSonus ATOM also have scale modes. Very usefull.
CybertronStudios I suspect you already know but here's some reasons why: Push has a better display. The one big OLED screen means it can show overviews of your clip, instrument or device. Some of the newer live instruments and devices eg Echo and wavetable have some pretty complex displays. The integration with live is better. Want to convert a simpler in slice mode to a drum rack, change your IO routing on a channel, change the colors of clips or drum rack pads, duplicate clips or tracks or scenes?. Push can do all these and more not yet seen someone demo the same on the sl Preset browsing. I've yet to see an sl demo showing this Add, remove devices again yet to see an sl demo of this More pads = better session view clip launching/manipulation, more visual drum or note sequencing Isometric chords, forget about light guides push2 allows you to play the same chords using the same pad shapes. However the light guide was listed as a positive for beginners in this video and push does make it even easier for beginners. @@MrClarkio I have been donated a push 1 and launchkey 49 mk1, and I am a beginner with both keys and ableton. I am not sure whether push 1 even have the functions you listed. I have a feeling the filter mode for scales is very useful for learning scales. What do you think about it?
Andrej Borodin push 1 only has an led display (if I remember rightly) so the comments about displays of devices don't apply. Although the button layout is different I think otherwise it's mostly compatible. I think push is best when you know a bit about ableton already, it's a great enabler of your workflow, but if you don't know what your typical workflow is yet then maybe best to get that knowledge first. €350 is a great price for an sl mkiii, where's that from?. TBH from what I've read the launchkey mkiii has really good integration with ableton as well. It doesn't have the same hardware control/sequencing abilities of the sl mkiii but if you don't have hardware synths that's less of an issue. I guess from your point of view crucially the launchkey also doesn't have the light guide for scales etc. If I were you I'd have a little think about whether your music theory/piano skills would be better served by a light guide or a years subscription to one of the many online piano learning tools. Depending on the answer to that question I would either go for the sl mkiii (and if you can get it for that price and can afford maybe just buy that regardless) or the launchkey mkiii. Obvs just my opinion but am deliberately trying to give you an opinion rather than just more questions.
Noob question, when saving what you played on the keyboard to computer, are they in digital format or analog format? Are we still able to make tweaks on computer?
It works as a MIDI controller when connected to the computer so it sends MIDI information (basically each note played) which can be used in a DAW like Ableton to play synths. As is is just note data the notes can be edited on the computer. I hope that answers your question.
Thanks for the video, I'm sure they'll add 32 or 64 step sequencing, definitely makes sense. Couple of questions : - Have you tried using the sl mkiii with an iOS device ? With a small stand it would make of this a great standalone synth ! - I also wonder if we can assign zones to different instruments/VSTs when connected on a computer or tablet. Would require the target software / VST to have a setting to accept only messages from a defined MIDI channel I guess.
@@just_pierre9730 indeed, still have my SL, but I find having to chain patterns to have longer sequences isn't very convenient. They still have some improvements to make in this sequencer.
amazing piece of gear, do you know if any smaller less expensive keyboards like this that has the scale mode but doesn’t need to computer to work, (unlike the komplete kontrol)
I purchased this keyboard and I hope it connects to my Roland JDXi like it did your Novation groove box. I have 3 synth parts and drums on the JDXi, I hope I can easily access those parts individually like you did.
in deed. Sometimes i watch other ppl saying the same things.. but i only register it, when i listen to Taetro.. True story! Plus.. technically.. they're also super clean, for sure.. Sound is really good, aesthetics too.. and @Taetro's voice/diction.
Anyone know this answer? Is there functionality similar "3 dots" to navigate the ableton browser & load devices like the 3 dots button on the cheaper launchkey mk3? Haven't found it yet on sl mk3. Anyone found it?
If they had added polyphonic aftertouch to this controller they would sell it for years, like the SL MKII did. New controllers now will all have poly AT. I would rather spend the double of what it costs and get the Hydrasynth to use it as a midi controller. Having said that, can you tell me if the clock generator of the SL MK 3 is good? Does it keep other gear nicely in sync? Haven´t seen many other keyboards controller with it´s own sequencer and clock generator, it is good so you don´t need to keep connected to a computer with DAW launched just to have a clock signal through midi... How do you set the tempo of the arp and sequencer, can you set the BPM? Does it show the BPM in standalone mode?
Hey Taetro, didn't you do a training video for this keyboard via ADSR? I thought I saw it a while back, but not anymore. I'm thinking of getting the beast.
Wobble 2 and some mpc Essentials, Air Hybrid 3, it's just so overwhelming. You could spend all day just messing with the prepackaged sounds or years messing with all the controls to create sounds.
Teatro, great video and good points to cover. Can you edit slices in the novation like you can with the push2? It seems like many edit features are similar but I can't find any info if you can edit samples in simpler like you can with the push2. Have you gotten into that?
Thank you! I came looking to see how the pads could be used for drums - you showed me! I know that this is a pro controller, but would you consider it as a good option for someone starting their own "studio" ? I intend to use just this and Ableton for some time, or the other options are to buy a cheaper keyboard (NI A49, Nov Impulse or similar) and some additional bits (Launchpad X maybe). My gut feeling at the moment is that the SL will keep me busy for some time to come.
How were you connecting the two devices? Was it just a MIDI out cable directly to the circuit from the controller, using one of the Novation "Templates"?
Hey Taetro, great vid man! Out of curisoity, would the launhkey suffice if only working with 1 midi keyboard to control ableton + plug in software or would this still offer more? Cheers
@@Taetro Legend, thanks Taetro! yeah been looking at both of these but if you reccommend the launchkey for purely working with software ( no additional hardware ) then i'll go for it :). Does the aftertouch really matter not having it in your opinion? I would say i'm an intermediate producer however so far i've only ever used laptop and plugins. Also, if you don't mind me asking, would you suggest I use additional hardware such as the launchpad as it seems both would still be cheaper than the SL49 mk3
@@Taetro About halfway through and it definitely helped fill in the gaps. I started the Intro on sequencing but had to go to bed lol, but noticed you are using a launch pad with the sequencer? Do you need a launchpad or other midi device to use the sequencer on the MIII, or can you work it with the MIII and Ableton? Basically I get my drum beat going, and want to add synth. When I select the synth in Ableton it plays the synth to my drum pattern. I'm missing a "buton press" somewhere, lol.
I didn't see sequencing on pads on other reviews so this was helpful. I know this goes perfect with Ableton, but how good is it with Fl Studio? I mean is the difference too much that I should get ableton or can I go with Fl Studio?
Could you help me decide between Arturia Keylab49 mk2 vs Novation SL MK3. I'm very, very torn between the reviews as of now. Im a beginner level musician, producer. I use Abelton Live aswell as Reaper. I've also heard that with the SL mk3 if you press the keys hard and fast, you will recieve start to "pivot" and the end of the key (in the back) will hit the top of the inside of the case. Causing a very noticeable "clack" noise. Im not sure if this is intended. Would I need a audio-interface with any of the 2? Or would normal PC soundboard suffice. Obviously there would be difference but how significant would it be? Aswell as if I would get the audio-interface could I connect it to portable bluetooth speaker with usb to midi connection? If not what would be the way to connect any of the 2 to a portable, bluetooth like speaker. I know a lot of noob questions but any help is highly appreciated! :)
It cannot do bluetooth directly like that and you can get audio interface with midi input with power adapter standalone but normally pc USB power no audio interface. Even if...I think you need midi cables and lines in/aux cables and good headphones or monitors...keep pc speakers for pc sounds separate for like UA-cam or music. Bottomline...you need the i/o for both controller and audio interface to computer. If controller and audio interface has no midi inputs then its USB power only to computer...no audio interface required. USB only audio interfaces only hookup to headphones maybe monitors line outs mics guitars mixers equalizers receivers amps xlr 1/4 3.5mm 1/8 connections. With this midi controller you need midi cables and midi inputs on audio interface like my behringer 404 with 48 phantom power and power adapter and lines cables and audio monitors not PC speakers for music listen pc sounds gaming sounds or blue tooth usb adapter with speakers. Studio recommendation...2/1pc monitors 2 pc speakers keyboard mouse/pad midi controller and optional midi devices and optional 2 audio monitors and audio interface for guitar amps mics extras for xlr sound. USB is just fine and internal sound card inputs. Cheap audio interfaces or midi controllers don't have all inputs...no ac dc power midi inputs just pc usb power only...you can get only pc speakers built In sound card computer usb controller USB or 3.5mm mic and headphones...audio interface again is extra for xlr mics guitar mixers equalizer hardware and midi capable inputs both controller and interface usb power to pc...also controller usb powered. I recommend novation because has three things more recent tech.....it has rgb program sequence and beats pads over like alesis v25 arturia mk2 other brands static edit beats pads you edit in software. Also there is novation 64 launchpad and equalizer pad midi usb power devices and 25 controllers to edit...along with 49/61 controller for full play....monitors usb audio interface for xlr mics guitars headphones mixers audio interface optional midi inputs are extra cost on more expensive models...midi inputs capable keyboard or controllers usb power plus midi input capable audio interface with midi cables. You dont need audio interface just usb power and sound card with 3.5mm headphones or pc speakers on computer maybe 3.5mm mic or usb mic. Best quality is midi capable xlr audio interface with cables....visit guitar center.
I’ve been on the NI controllers (S49, A49 & M32) for awhile and while I do like some aspects, the daw integration is really underwhelming. They’re hyper focused on their own NKS system and the Komplete plugin which is cumbersome and outdated. Anyways just ordered this puppy up, and looking forward to getting my hands on it. As an Ableton user, the integration looks like it’s pointed in the right direction. 👍 Nice vid and thanks for sharing!
@@MrClarkio Hi there - I greatly prefer the Novation 49SL MKIII over any of the NI Controllers I have. Hardware-wise, they both have nice keys and wheels. But one of the best parts of the MKIII is automapping to VST macros in the DAW (I use Ableton). It also has a bunch of other things that I like, like a small pad set and scale marking LEDs that are easy on the eyes (NI's LEDs are way too bright and have a flicker that bothers my eyes). Novation is focused on overall DAW integration (and external synths though I care more about the DAW). NI is focused on integrating with their own products and the NKS system. NI products sound good, but the interfaces of their software is horrible (ex. Komplete Kontrol, Kontact). I That said, the MKIII leaves some room for improvement, but I am very happy with it and glad I bought it. I use it nearly every day.
@@jaydekaytv Thank you good to know. I agree the NI Komplete Kontrol software is horrible. I suspect they somewhat deliberately keep it so (e.g. how hard could it be to have screen resizing?) in order to "encourage" users to buy their hardware
Answered my question lol. Got my Circuit today, after only 1 hour on it and rewatching some videos, including your training video I purchased... it all meshed and makes sense. Ijust need to learn to map daw templates and I will be good. I like the circuit versatility and then going to the MKIII with keys ans scale mode.. I have so much more to learn, but have learned so much.. Thanks Taetro!
I bought this recently, I'm a multi instrumentalist who plays a bit of piano and have to say it's not the best for actually playing stuff (classical, jazz etc) but it's a decent keyboard and the controls and integration with Ableton are great and the main reason I bought it. It is a bit overpriced though, if you are thinking of buying I would make sure you run through a list of features and really think if you need them or not because you might be better off buying something else.
i can second this, the keys are not going to impress you if you come from playing proper weighted keys, but the quality of this keybed is also somewhat better than a lot of other midi keyboards vaguely in this price range. if you care about key quality but don't want full weighted piano keys, it's a good choice (especially if you use ableton). i tried the arturia keylab and let me tell you, there's a hilarious gulf in quality between the terrible keys on that and the pretty decent keys on this one.
If you think it's over-priced with its feature set you're frankly a loon. It's over-priced for the application you are using it for, in your opinion, and in your own admission that's because you bought a keyboard with a ton of features you don't use (but others will of course). It's not over-priced, you just bought the wrong thing and are blaming the product.
@@youtuber74223 If I felt like I made a mistake purchasing it, I would have just returned it and bought a different one, you know, like a rational human being, rather than harbour a grudge against an inanimate object. I kept the keyboard, it's decent, and I've used most, if not all of it's features over time (2 years). At time of writing my original comment though, in my opinion, it was a bit overpriced, and after 2 years with it, I haven't changed my mind, although I can't comment on today's prices/gear market. If you disagree with someone else's opinion, the explanation is probably not that they are mentally ill. People also have basic consumer rights and can return products (at least where I live), they also tend not to have deep feelings of resentment towards everyday obects like keyboards and blame them for their past decisions, that would be very unusual. I'm not sure how you managed to concoct the elaborate story in your mind that you did to explain things to yourself, but you are very talented and should consider getting into creative writing.
Interesting. Left out a few things; This keyboard is wildly over-priced for what it does. Although other Daws may work, it was designed to be paired with ableton live. If you're an actual musician that plays keys, you might look elsewhere, as this keybed is odd. If you should play some fast notes with variations in pressure, this keyboard does not catch them all, and the back of the keys make an odd clattering noise. While at Namm and in the studio I tried out many controller keyboards. I believe the best so far is either Arturia KeyLab mkII or Nektar Panorama T series. Or even an older Roland A-800 PRO. Just my opinion.
cool. I understand the click bait title. However, the enthusiasm with which you speak might lead someone to believe there are no downsides to this product. Giving only part of the story or only half truths about a product is deceiving, especially since this keyboard is generally not on display at most music stores and one must rely on folks like you to give them the skinny. Considering the click bait number in the title technique, along with the comments, I'm guessing the majority of the folks clicking on this flicker do not own this keyboard and are looking for input on a product they might purchase.
@@Insomniaclife The video contains EXACTLY what it it claims in the title of the video and the video contains no deception of any kind. You claim that the SL Mk3 might not integrate well with other DAWs, which is a lie. To integrate with other DAWs and hardware, is exactly what the SL Mk3 excels at. If you want to discuss keybeds, that's fine, and I agree that the SL Mk3 keybed is not the best, just do not falsely accuse people and keyboards :D
Push 2 is simply better as a all-in-one solution to control Ableton live. The sl mk3 is more aimed at daw less producers that uses more hardware than software.

I purchased this keyboard and I hope it connects to my Roland JDXi like it did your Novation groove box. I have 3 synth parts and drums on the JDXi, I hope I can easily access those parts individually like you did.
Did you manage to do that?
Micael Azevedo did you get an answer?
I'd love a multitimbral sound module with built in drum kits that integrated perfectly with the SL MKIII.
Like the circuit? Or just get a nice rack-mounted synth like Roland Integra, Yamaha Motif, or something in that vein.
Your Vids Are soooo Clean!!!🔥
in deed. Sometimes i watch other ppl saying the same things.. but i only register it, when i listen to Taetro.. True story!
Plus.. technically.. they're also super clean, for sure.. Sound is really good, aesthetics too.. and @Taetro's voice/diction.
They are
Hello. How do you think. That is better the Arturia minilab mkii or novation 25 sl mk2 ?
I'm thinking of getting the beast.
excited to pick this up next month
thx for the vid
I beg of you, could you do a episode on the very complex software that comes with the mpk mini II? Please please please . . .
ummm I probably won't because I use Live - what software does it come with??
@@Taetro I guess he's talking about the hybrid 3 plugin or MPC essentials or something. Btw I love beats b4 bed. Never stop doing those!
Wobble 2 and some mpc Essentials, Air Hybrid 3, it's just so overwhelming. You could spend all day just messing with the prepackaged sounds or years messing with all the controls to create sounds.
Hi Taetro did you know if the SL MK3 is able to Quantize in Ableton from the controller? Thanks
Teatro, great video and good points to cover.
Can you edit slices in the novation like you can with the push2?
It seems like many edit features are similar but I can't find any info if you can edit samples in simpler like you can with the push2.
Have you gotten into that?
I would also like to know this!- any update?
Beautifully done
Would really love to see a video of the SL mkiii using iOS apps integrated into the setup
Can you control arturia key lab with the knobs and faders in a daw?
"I dont have a lot of outboard gear" Sees six controllers in the video.
My gut feeling at the moment is that the SL will keep me busy for some time to come.
it's definitely a good start because it can grow with you
Is it fully functional with flstudio? or some features ar only made for Ableton ?
If I have the Novation SL Mk3 61, would I need the Novation Launchkey 61 for anything? Thank you.
How were you connecting the two devices? Was it just a MIDI out cable directly to the circuit from the controller, using one of the Novation "Templates"?
i was wondering the same thing
Would you recommend this for a beginner getting into ableton and producing( I don’t have a budget)
No (you don’t have a budget)
@@Taetro so what would recommend ?
@@Taetro appreciate the feedback man!
Does the display on the far right shows the volume level before moving the actual fader on the unit to help recall volume levels of saved projects
the screen changes depending on what you're adjusting/what mode you're in
what you think of the ARTURIA Keylab 88 MKII?
hey man whats it like with native instruments komplete kontrol software?
what kind of speakers are in the background?
Krk Rp5s
Taetro thank you
hi..has any one used the mk3 with studio one ? am wondering whether it integrates well
I am going to buy this. Thanks for this video. Subscribed!
Hey Taetro, great vid man! Out of curisoity, would the launhkey suffice if only working with 1 midi keyboard to control ableton + plug in software or would this still offer more? Cheers
launchkey
@@Taetro Legend, thanks Taetro! yeah been looking at both of these but if you reccommend the launchkey for purely working with software ( no additional hardware ) then i'll go for it :). Does the aftertouch really matter not having it in your opinion? I would say i'm an intermediate producer however so far i've only ever used laptop and plugins. Also, if you don't mind me asking, would you suggest I use additional hardware such as the launchpad as it seems both would still be cheaper than the SL49 mk3
@@Taetro In addition, can you program aftertouch by using a plugin so it works on the launchkey? Thanks in advance Taetro
does the 37 key one do all these things with the pads like the sl mark 3
I question if building motorized faders into the SL Mk3 would drop like 3-400$ onto that price tag.
I'm going to buy your tutorial video today on the MKIII.. I'm missing the boat o chaining sounds to make a song
Also using it as standalone and its hard to find good user guides or videos
amazing let me know how it goes!
How do I I clear zone
I didn't see sequencing on pads on other reviews so this was helpful. I know this goes perfect with Ableton, but how good is it with Fl Studio? I mean is the difference too much that I should get ableton or can I go with Fl Studio?
you will find with FL studio there are not many controllers created specifically for that daw
@@Taetro Alright, thank you
Does the SL have a chords function? And also can it be powered without a computer?
yes
Best set up so far
thanks Flynn!
How can I customize the backlights
workflows in the daw plis
Sir I'm using Ableton live too and I'm wondering whether I should buy M-audio 61 keys or Novation 61 SL MKlll please help me out
I think there’s a lot more features on the SL but the price range is pretty different between them
Taetro Thank you very much for your help Sir....! Love from India ❤
So basically this is a Novation youtube channel...
Hi.. can you use zones for VSTi?
Pretty sweet! It's like the big bro of the launchkey 😂
exactly!!
Hope you have a great Christmas and a great break! Happy New year too if you don't post before then ❄❄🎉
God bless!
How novation template can be work with this.
Will it work with ipad?
Can the pads be put into a scale?
Yes!
Taetro - been looking for that info everywhere! Thank you. How do you pick the scale for the pads?
Super video ! Merci.
Your studio is increasing
Nice Video!
Nice vid and thanks for sharing!
Nice. You won’t be disappointed
Hi, I'd be really interested to hear how you found the whole NI vs novation experience.
That said, the MKIII leaves some room for improvement, but I am very happy with it and glad I bought it.
Good work!
This pretty cool thanks
thanks for watching!!
Is it more beneficial to have the Circuit with the SL? I am just using the SL and Ableton?
I am caught between whether or not I should buy this or the launchkey mk3 keyboard
I'm hoping Arturia does a keyboard like this, this year.
Interesting. Left out a few things;
This keyboard is wildly over-priced for what it does.
Just my opinion.
not sure that I left out anything seeing as it is my favorite features...
my favorite features...
my.
Clickbait? Clickbait number?
I can’t say what my 4 favorite features are without being called clickbait?
Lol.
FRank jan ok it’s TRUE they took my kids and FORCED ME TO REVIEW DOPE GEAR.
honestly I’ll take the gear over the kids 😂😂😂
@@Insomniaclife The video contains EXACTLY what it it claims in the title of the video and the video contains no deception of any kind. You claim that the SL Mk3 might not integrate well with other DAWs, which is a lie. To integrate with other DAWs and hardware, is exactly what the SL Mk3 excels at.
If you want to discuss keybeds, that's fine, and I agree that the SL Mk3 keybed is not the best, just do not falsely accuse people and keyboards :D

I want one :3
get oneeee
this vs NI komplete kontrol?
No need for the Push now.....dump it. Redundancy = complacency
ehhhh the form factors are quite different but this is definitely a competitor for the push
Push is better for sampling
Push 2 is simply better as a all-in-one solution to control Ableton live. The sl mk3 is more aimed at daw less producers that uses more hardware than software.
Novation only know what 1 daw is they. Ever heard of anything else
