    Wow! Thanks so much for this video🤸🏾‍♀️ I bought a last minute jumpsuit from Amazon and a new sewing kit, anticipating a little hem... but, I wanted to make sure I did it right, with the material... Only a few tiny mistakes, but it came out well! Thanks again!!

      @@JSternDesigns I think so! Also called Ladder Stitch. It creates an invisible vertical seam when joining knitting.
      I finished my wide leg jeans hem yesterday using your method and found it superior to doing it on my machine. You have seriously changed my life! It takes a little time but the results are worth it. Every time I snugged the thread and watched the seam come together I did a happy dance.

    I used to sew most of my own clothes and I learned that when the thread gets twisted tightly like you had there, just hold the garment up and let the needle unwind the thread. Works very fast and well. Ty for showing this method.

    Thank you so much for your response! It has helped me with so many jeans for me and my daughter considering we both are so short and it’s hard to find jeans to fit in the length and everywhere else too. I do have one pair that is more of a dramatic flare , but I haven’t touched those yet. I have recently bought a sewing machine and very eager to use it, but I’m still learning the basics. Any tips you have for using a sewing machine to hem jeans? Also do you have any tips on taking out or extending the waist line in jeans?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  3 роки тому +1

      You can use your sewing machine to hem jeans. Treat the heavy flat fell seams to a gently "Pounding" with a rubber mallet to soften the fabric. Fold the bottom edge up 1/2" twice... Use a size 16 topstitch needle with a heavier topstitch thread.... use all purpose thread of a matching color in the bobbin. Lengthen the stitch to 4 mm and go slow! To make more room in the waistline, you could cut the waistband at the side seams and take out the side seams a little bit. Then add a coordinating piece of denim to create a V shaped gusset. Sew it to the side seam and cut edges of the waistband. make the top of the gusset long enough that you can fold it down to create a self facing.

    I was wondering if I could shorten jeans by laying old jeans that fit perfectly in the length on top of flare jeans I need to shorten?
    I never seem to get it the right length if I try them on and mark the hem or get my husband to mark them.
    Thank you for all your wonderful videos.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  4 місяці тому +1

      If the perfectly fitting jeans and the jeans you need to shorten fit the same up at the top of the inseams/crotch (meaning the base of the crotch sits up against you the same vs. one hanging below your body) ...Then yes, you can. You don't have to lay them on top of each other... Just measure the inseam from the crotch seam to the hem on your perfectly fitted jeans and then mark the new pair that length... and add the hem allowance you're going to turn up. (Or if you're using this method, pinch out the extra length right above the original hem and follow the instructions to hem.)... Hope this helps! Thanks for watching

    Wonderful! Thanks! How would you hem bell bottoms with the original hem?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому +1

      If the hem is really wide, it might be easier to take them up above the knee (You'll have a seam above the knee... just like leather jeans) ... but it's really easy to get rid of the excess length at the knee because the width of the leg may not change above and below the adjustment making it easy to sew the leg back together). Here's a tutorial for that. ua-cam.com/video/94kX4vCyv8Y/v-deo.html

I have some wide flare pants that I would like to hem so I was wondering if you had any advice for this process. The other way to shorten flared pants and keep all the flare is to cut the leg right above the knee (like leather jeans)... Take out the excess length there. Hope this helps! ua-cam.com/video/94kX4vCyv8Y/v-deo.html

    Hi! Sorry, this is a bit late but I just wanted to check if it's OK to cut the inside fold (the extra fabric, not sure what to call it) once you're done sewing? The stitches won't come undone or anything? Anyways amazing video thank you! 💕

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  Рік тому

      Yes, you can cut off the extra fabric after sewing the new hem. If you do, I would stitch around (just under the raw edges) to keep them from raveling in the wash! Thanks for watching!

    hey! can i use this technique even with a kind of a strange hem? my flare jeans don’t have the usual hem, but a frayed one...and there is no sign of stitching anywhere. it’s just denim fabric with frays on the bottom. can i still use this method or will it look weird?

      I'm not a seamster, so please take this comment as just an uninformed opinion: if there's no existing hem at all, then there's really no reason to try to keep that no-hem. Better, I would think, to just make a real hem at the length you want the pants to be.

      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому

      So sorry I didn't see your comment until now. Yes, it doesn't matter how the edge is finished or not finished... it's about preserving the original look of the hem! Thank you for following along with me

    Hi there, i am going to try this technique on two pairs of bootleg jeans of mine.
    I am only 5ft 2 and my jeans will need to be taken up alot more than in your video.
    Will the length that I turn up show too much even if i tack in the four places you mentioned.
    I really didn’t want to cut the edges.

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  2 роки тому +2

      If you the amount you need to remove is peeking out of the bottom of your leg & you don't want to cut it, I would press it up (away from the hem) really well and hand baste it all the way around. You could also cut it along the folded edge, then trim the upper leg allowance short. Then fold lower edge under and baste in place to remove some of the bulk. ... Hope that helps!

    Hello! I wanted to use this method on a pair of jeans but they need to be hemmed up 4 inches and the material that is pleated underneath would be too long. The flare is still in tact and lines up correctly, I don’t want a seam in the knee, can I cut the excess fabric from the pleat and whip stitch it down so it’s not sticking out?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  3 роки тому

    hey, will this work if i need to take up more than 2 inches, say around 3?

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  Рік тому +1

      If you can pin out 3" and the fabric is not fighting then, Yes. If the flare is significant, the two positions on the leg that will need to be sewn together might be too different in length... Meaning the lower edge will be longer than the position you are going to sew it to 3" above (because it's farther from the hem edge) In These cases, you may have to adjust the side and inseams slightly to reduce the difference in measurements. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching

    Hello l. I’m here bc I have daughter who needs all her jeans hemmed at least 4 to 5 inches. How can I do this with flared jeans and not completely cut off the flare since it’s so much that needs to come off??? Struggling here she wants to wear flares so badly. And I can not sew at all

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  9 місяців тому

      That's a tricky one... if you need to take off several inches and you want to keep the flare, instead of taking it off at the hem, cut the leg at the knee and take it off there. You'll end up with a seam right above the knee like leather pants. Here's a tutorial to check it out. ua-cam.com/video/94kX4vCyv8Y/v-deo.html Hope this helps!

    • @JSternDesigns
      @JSternDesigns  8 місяців тому

      If you live near a sewing machine dealer, the best thing to do is go in and look at the machines they have to offer... Tell them what your budget is and what kind of sewing you will be doing. A good dealer will be able to guide you to the best options and be there to support you when you need help. If you don't live near a sewing machine store... I recommend looking for a Janome, Baby Lock or Brother sewing machine that is in your price range. These three brands of sewing machines are very user friendly, reliable and not as expensive as the European brands like Bernina, Viking and Pfaff. Hope that helps!

      If your hem has a lot of flair, or if you need to remove a lot of vertical length (and you want to keep all the flare), the other option is to hem the leg right above the knee. This will create a seam (like leather pants)... Here's a tutorial for that: ua-cam.com/video/94kX4vCyv8Y/v-deo.html

    How in the world can you sew through all those layers of denim like poking a toothpick thru butter - I would need extra tools like a hammer and pliers with each stitch taking minutes nit seconds as you casually sew along. Impossible

    • @JSternDesigns

      If you're having trouble getting the needle through the denim, a hammer or rubber mallet can help soften the hem to make it easier... Or you can try a curved upholstery needle... The curved shape helps get through anything! Thanks for watching
