- In this video I image the Pelican Nebula with the Celestron Edge HD 8 inch telescope. I started this image back in May, but unfortunately, I didn't take any flat frames for the data I captured. Thankfully, I managed to pull the data together to produce my first nebula image with the Edge HD telescope.
Details: Pelican Nebula
Equipment:
Celestron Edge HD 8 inch
ZWO Asi 294mm pro
Antlia 3nm SHO filters
Ioptron CEM60
Asiair pro
Celestron OAG
174mm guide camera
ZWO EAF
Data:
HA: 23 x 300s subs
Sii: 28 x300s subs
Oiii: 26 x 300s subs
Stacked in APP, edited in PixInsight.

You're way too hard on yourself Russell... I think this image is magnificent!
Thank you very much James, really appreciate it 👍
Despite the challenges and the short integration time, that image came out pretty damn nice. Lots of detail there.
Thank you very much mate, really appreciate it 👍
I find that although timelapses are great to watch they are also great for the photographer to see what the night was like from a cloud perspective. Well done on the final image, not easy when the data isn’t what you want at the start. Story of my life. 😂
Thanks mate, I agree I always like looking at the time lapses in the morning. Gives me an instant idea as to how good the data will be and how much I was able to capture.
Really nice image.. especially considering the challenges. :)
Thank you very much mate
You did an awesome job getting a final image together, despite the issues Russell! Nice job and looking forward to seeing more of your EDGE images! 📸🔭👍🏻
Thanks very much mate. I’m loving using the edge again and can’t wait to share more images. Clear skies 👍
I saw this videon during my hospital shift coffee break. Lovely effort !!!
Thank you very much, so glad you enjoyed it
So much detail in the final image. The effort was worth it. It's a pleasure to look at.
Thank you very much Stefan
Beautiful!
Russell, if I can get any of my images close to that I'd be quite happy. It's good and nice details.
Thank you very much Andy
Turned out great IMO Russell, despite the integration time..
Thank you very much Jason
Good final image, despite the data.
Thank you
Love the Edge HD… So much more detail to be seen at this focal length, great image despite the limited data… 👍🏻
Thanks mate, It’s such a fantastic scope isn’t it! Glad you’re enjoying yours 👍 clear skies
Hi Russell,
Hmmm, looks good to me, but I know you wanted better. Oh yeah, gotta take those flats. I don't leave home without them. With these newer cameras with almost no amp glow, darks are beginning to be not so important, but the flats and the dark flats that go with them are sooo important. You got a nice vein of dark matter or dust cloud showing up. Did you see Joe Navara's video yet about the dust clouds between the Pelican and the NA nebula?
Thanks Pat, unfortunately the 294mm pro which I use with my Edge has some serious amp glow. Its not a problem, but I'm realising that the dark frames need to be updated regularly. I agree, darks aren't really needed with the newer cameras such as the 2600mm. I really wish I had taken flats, I'm not sure why I didn't to be honest, it's usually part of my procedure. I think I just forgot with the excitement of using/testing the Askar 80phq. I've not seen Joe's video yet, but it is in my UA-cam queue, I will get to it soon. Thanks again 👍
Great capture Russell! Glad to see you using the EdgeHD!
Thanks mate, its great to get it back on the mount
Nice shot Russell! You managed to make the most of your time-limited data, and the results in H-apha prove that you have a set-up that will produce some spectacular images in the coming months!
Thanks very much Derek. It’s been great to use the Edge again after a few months. Looking forward to sharing some more images soon 👍
Well done Russell ! You’ve inspired me to get my edge out for closer captures !
Thanks Stephen, I’m loving using the edge again. Hope you get some clear skies to use yours soon 👍
You pulled an exceptional image from some dogs dinner data.....well done! 👍👍
Thank you very much, it did take a long time editing the data trying to get it looking half decent…it really shows how important good calibration frames are. 👍
Nice job Russell 👍
Thank you Scott
Nice image! Are those some horizontal linear defects in the image? I wonder if that is something that Local Normalization will take away in WBPP, assuming you use that script.
Thanks Chris. Yes, I think it was a issue with the calibration of the old dark frames. I tried stacking with both APP and WBPP, the APP stack was slightly cleaner, but I didn't really
play around with the settings too much. Maybe I will adjust the normalisation settings and see if I can remove the banding. Thanks for the tip 👍
Great image Russell. I would be super happy with that! My Celestron C8 is patiently waiting for me to take it outside for its first light. Dr B from Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you very much Brian, I hope you get first light very soon!
Nice video Russ. It increased my desires of having one. I've been planning for the HD 11 for 5 yrs and plan to purchase one on Friday/Saturday. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Oh wow that’s awesome, congrats on the scope! I bet the 11inch will be absolutely fantastic! I hope you get some clear skies to use it soon! Thanks for watching
Really nice Russell, came out well! I like the look of your edge hd! Wouldn’t mind one myself 😄 Are you going to IAS in Warwick on Sat?
Thanks very much mate, I’ve really been enjoying using it recently…are you thinking of getting one? No unfortunately I can’t make IAS, I would have loved to, but can’t make it unfortunately.
@@RussellsAstrophotography Shame mate, I am only going for the morning as I’ve got to be somewhere else in the afternoon! Yeah, I’m thinking of getting more focal length! Still didn’t get the Askar 400! So now looking to go bigger! I’ve recently bought the 2600mm and set of 7 Antlia 3nm filters, so all out!! 😀
Hi Russell, nice image even with what you say is poor data, The final image looks good to me, I've always thought of cassagrain telescopes more of a lunar or planetary scope but I think you've just changed my mind, thanks for sharing your work
Thank you very much Anthony. Glad you like the image. I think they are fantastic for nebula targets as well as lunar and planetary. It’s great to be able to pick out detail in the nebula which you can’t with the wider scopes. Thanks again 👍
I think that's turned out well with all the issues you had, I'd love an edge or something with some decent reach for galaxies although I can't see that happening for a while.
Thanks very much mate, yes very pleased with how the image turned out given the difficulties I had. it really is nice to have that extra FL.
Really excellent, Russell! I am contemplating purchase of the EdgeHD 8". Have you measured any tilt (mirror flop) when using the EAF with it? I assume you cannot lock the mirror when using the EAF.
for horizontal banding, check you have a high quality and short as possible usb cable to the camera. Also review usb hub arrangement - I go straight to mount head NUC pc to camera. But another great video - thanks
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. I’ve been using the standard ZWO cables, but might look at upgrading. Which ones do you use?
@@RussellsAstrophotography I bought Lindy cables, though I'm sure there will be other good quality makes. I also don't use the hub on the asi2600 in case that injects noise. I've read that ZWO cables can be noisy.
@@iansmith834 thanks mate, I’ll take a look at those cables 👍
wow!!
I’m enjoying your videos! Great for beginners. Question, what’s your dew heater setup? Controller? Type of strap? Thank you trying to find one for my 6SE.
Thank you very much. The dew heater is the Lynx Astro dew heater, they sell them for all sizes of scopes including the the SCT. I am sure they do one for the 6se. I power it and control it using the Asiair pro. You do need an adapter to do this. I hope this helps.
great video russell. i just bought an Edge 8. and 2600MM with zwo 2 inch EWF and optolong 3nm 2inches SHO and LRGB filters. I also have 0.7x reducer. and 174mm mini guidecamera.
need some help for guiding setup. i need clarifications for the following:
1) which OAG is better suited zwo OAG-L or Celestron OAG?
2) would the new camera 2600MC DUO work well for Edge 8?
Pls advise.
