I normally dont have a problem playing an older rpg but this is one of the clunkiest rpgs ive ever played Its almost charming how much of a “first try” of a game it is. Some decisions are baffling
@@draphking It's also very not fun, most battles strategies are just auto battle with your best moves also the tile system in battles is my biggest nightmare
I get what you mean by "first try" but it's weird hearing that when persona 1 sticks extremely close to the classic smt formula with a couple major alterations
This isn't quite a "first try" game, a lot of what's in here is just the usual old SMT stuff (high encounter rate/first person dungeon crawling/frustrating demon negotiation/expensive gear etc). The real suffering is trying to play the oldest Megami Tensei games which even lack basic things like a map. Imagine having to face a Persona 1 dungeon without a map, or needing to cast the "Mapper" spell everytime you need to confirm where tf you are. I'd say Persona 1 isn't that bad until the Final Dungeon, where the last savepoint is REALLY far from the Final Boss, who can be very frustrating. Also Snow Queen Quest has multiple layers of bs.
Been playing through the entire smt franchise in roughly order of release and so far the absolute worst encounter rate was in the smt1 government building, persona 1 isn't even in the discussion. Literally every 2-4 steps was an encounter. Only place in the game where the agro indicator was always full red. I guess it was only 1 area and not a whole game though...
I don't remember an aggro indicator in SMT1, but I only played the Super Famicom version of the game a couple years ago so idk. But what's especially bad about encounters in SMT1 is that at the end of battle you can get a "Enemies were attracted by the noise!" message and another encounter begins right then and there. If you think an encounter every step is bad try 3 encounters every step.
@@kbab5329 yeah i played the ps1 port seeing as that had an english fan translation. I played it earlier this year and i don't remember there being an "enemies were attracted" message but there were definitely consecutive encounters in the ps1 port as well. I'm pretty sure the 3 in a row encounters were mostly in that building too, so yeah 3 in a row, every 3 steps
The incredible thing is how the combat system itself ensures the battles last a long-ass while. In P2 you can at least just do an all-hitting fusion spell on your first turn and be done with it. I had a fairly good time completing the map scouting sidequests in EP because Tidal Wave would just wipe everyone out. And those sidequests require you to fill up every square of the dungeon's map!
On a remake I would like if they removed random encounters entirely and made symbol encounters instead. I like JRPGs but I always hated random encounters, good thing that they are gone for good in the SMT franchise.
This is actually better than the PS1 version where due to a programming bug the number of "safe" steps after an encounter is reduced to 0 as opposed to the intended 10 steps of peace. Couple that with a 20 second long Vishnu loading screen and slow as all hell battle animations and you've got yourself the true revelations experience.
What makes the encounter rate worse is how slow and tedious the battles feel. I tried playing Persona 1 about 2 months ago and after going through like 3 encounters, I just stopped playing and never went back. The only good thing is the battle music (both PS1 and PSP)
@TheRealRenAmamiya To be fair Persona 1 is a PS1 game, and the first game in the series. It's MUCH less clunky than the Shin Megami Tensei games that came before it. I think you have to judge older games on their own merits and not compare them to modern standards.
Currently watching a playthrough of the psp version and I swear I had to skip most of the time because of how many times the person was getting in a fight 💀

I think the psp version is better from what i've heard. I think you couldn't even speed up battles in the ps1 version, plus the localization is pretty trash
@ImDigas But you got into battles less often, and the soundtrack is WAY better. The localization is actually good, it just changes the setting and alters the character designs. But the actual plot and dialogue are solid. Like, go listen to the PS1 P1 OST sometime, it's night and day.
@@Jordan3DSI agree. While I do enjoy the psp soundtrack, I prefer the ps1 better as that soundtrack gives it a better atmosphere that the game has, plus despite the changes made to the characters, like you said, they did lower the encounter rate, To be honestly I found it somehow more tenseful as you never know when a next one could happen rather then having to experience every 5 or less steps.
It isn't bugged, it is different on purpose (kinda a good desicion but also bad), compared to the PS1, in the PSP you need nearly a quarter of the steps to get into a battle, but the enemies have nearly 70% of their original HP, they do less damage and drop half of their original money and exp the original idea was to make every encounter have the importance of a boss or mini-boss, but in the PSP edition it was changed to what we have now to make farming easier, and knowing how the encounter rate is so high they added ways to disable it like the skill estoma that completely disables random encounters for a time
@@reypato1738 How is it different on purpose if the encounter rate algorithm is ported directly from the PSX version? The reason encounters happen more often in the PSP version is that the PSP clock speed is 333MHz, whereas the PSX was 33MHz, which made it run the encounter algorithm faster than it should. Or at least, that's what the guy who made the encounter patch for the PSP version said. Also, where can I find the original stats of enemies for the PSX version?
