    I've been researching earthbag homes for the last several weeks, and this is hands down the nicest earthbag home I've seen! Was this an economical build? Was it much less expensive than what a standard home would have cost? I hope to build my own earthbag home one day, and would appreciate very much any pointers from one who obviously knows their stuff! Excellent job!

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  7 років тому

      Hi and thanks. Outlay cost was about $125/sq ft, but that doesn't include my sweat equity, labor of love. To begin, find handsome doors and windows (salvaged if possible), design with them in mind, study house orientation (I like southern exposure), find alternative building books you like, read them, take notes, draw sketches/make models, mark out on ground to get feel (if you have property) and think about roof, i.e., what kind, shape and material. Open design or walled rooms? I really like open kitchen to living area and I'm big on a view out kitchen sink window. How will you heat/cool? High ceilings? Make sure to integrate plumbing when building, not after fact. Solar or on grid only? Small is good, but with room to not get cabin fever. Nice to have a place for guests. And, probably biggest besides roof is what material to build with. Go with what feels good to you viscerally. It has to come from the soul to make it worth a lot of hard work. Good luck!

    • @RollerPigg
      @RollerPigg 7 років тому

      Wow - thanks so much! That's really good info. Do you have any kind of a rough breakdown of costs? Like what the most expensive part was? (I'm thinking Kitchens and Bathrooms) Thanks again!

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  7 років тому +1

      For me, it was the numerous brand new windows (that's why I say search for used ones if possible), my beautiful mahogany doors (I love nice doors!), 2Kw off-grid solar system with batteries, etc (purchased in 2005, cheaper now), and my very unconventional roof from drywall to lid. Overall, two highest were solar and roof. Labor for two guys to help me with a lot of the initial building was part of it too. Bathrooms and kitchen weren't as high a cost, though did purchase nice tub and kitchen cabinets (both important to me). I did all my own tiling and could now do my own plumbing. My county does not require building permit, but does require septic, elec and plumbing inspection another layer of cost and work.

    • @RollerPigg
      @RollerPigg 7 років тому +1

      Well, that's good to hear... Yes, windows are expensive. My situation is I have a very large family, and thus need a very large house, so I'm hoping to do this on the cheap (if I do end up doing it - we're still in the research phase). The problem will be finding the time, and I worry about sun and waterproofing during the construction phase, as the Kansas sun can be brutal.
      Although I can't afford beautiful mahogany doors, I certainly hope I can duplicate what you've done with your walls, with earth and lime plaster. They are so elegant! You really hit a home run there! Awesome job!

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  5 років тому +1

      Built in Paonia, CO. No building codes in Delta County so that helped. Make presentation of your building design to local building enforcement having done your homework. They mostly care about load bearing and fire resistance. It's just a matter of educating. See if anyone has built alternatively before you paving the way. Straw bale is popular. Good luck.

      Hi. I don't think the company I ordered from exists any longer. I used 50lb plain (no label), red, mesh, polypropylene bags made for onions. turnips, carrots, etc. I just found them on the website Globe Bag Co, though I'm sure they're sold elsewhere. Keep in mind, I doubled up on the bags and then turned them inside out for smooth seams.

    • @criticalnurse-ready8705
      @criticalnurse-ready8705 Рік тому

      Hi there!! Thank you for responding. I checked and they are still around. Do you remember how many bags you used for your build? Did you do a rubble trench or concrete footers? What’s the temp difference in your home on a hot sunny day? Did you put any air vents in the walls or you say not needed or wish you thought of them? Did you use lime for a stabilizer? Are there still no build requirements in your area? Thanks so much in advance.!!! Fellow future first-time builder

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  Рік тому +1

      @@criticalnurse-ready8705 Hard to say how many bags exactly. I remember I ordered by the bale and had a few hundred left over at the end. I believe I ordered two bales, so close to 4,000 bags. Doubling up made for more. You could figure it out mathematically according to square footage of house design. Filled, the bags were around 15"D X 21"L X 4"H. I did rubble trench foundation in the front of the house. Used single bags to hold the stone which worked great as a temporary form. Video shows that. Polystyrene block with concrete was used in the rear of house because there was a slope and I wanted the stability. If windows are closed in the morning and shades drawn against sun, temp remains very comfortable inside on a hot day. Mass is really the only way to go with hot, dry climates. Of course the type of roof and insulation used is key to keeping a house cool too. Swamp coolers are a nice addition if vented directly down from roof to save in necessary duct work. No air vents in walls and haven't missed them. Windows work well for any needed air circulation. Did not use lime as stabilizer in the bags. My dirt with sand and scoria was a perfect combo for hardness. The earth finish on the outside has been the only challenge. Probably would have been good to use a lime plaster finish or stucco, at least on the exposed walls. Elements have kinda done a number on these places and those areas have needed attention. No building codes yet in Delta County, other than septic, plumbing and elec. Land use regs are coming into play which is the County's way of trying to control building. People are fighting it though. A freedom thing. Good luck, future first time builder!

  • @TheyCallMeVic

    Hi Nelly! One more question for you:
    I really love the way you put windows in between wood beams. How far apart are those beams? and how high are the small earthbag walls in between the beams?
    I am planning to do a similar design in my home.
    Thank you so much! :)

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  7 років тому +1

      Hi Victor. There's the posts and then the beams. Not sure exactly what you are asking. Beams are roughly 6"-8" each stacked under roof (top of walls) to keep even pitch all the way around. Mine's a low pitched roof, between a 3/12-4/12. I wouldn't go any swallower if possible. My posts and beams are all local aspen. Then there are the posts which are roughly 6" with the 8 uniform 4'X5' windows in between. My window size was basically the determining factor to post placement. Earth bag fill-in (walls) vary according to design and what's necessary to accommodate space in between beams, posts and windows. Start by designing around required foundation height, size of windows you'll use, and the wall height necessary to achieve pitch of roof you need. Everything else is more-or-less the fill-in. Post and beam construction is the skeleton to whatever foot print you want. Hope that answers your question.

    @cbmst1 This sounds great but I may be forced to build a monolithic dome or rammed earth home to accommodate. I've got two boys, a girlfriend and her son that will be moving in with me. That's three boys. I would have to build several pods or find another option to build an entire second floor. I'm going to do an internship with calearth next year so we'll see what they recommend. :)

    OMG, how do I contact the builders!?

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  3 роки тому

      There were mainly only three of us, the homeowner, me, the builder, who still lives in Paonia, CO and our right hand man who now lives elsewhere.

    Did you need to get permits?

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  2 роки тому

      Yes, probably permits are required elsewhere than Delta County, CO where currently there's only elec, plumbing and septic permits required. It was/is nice to build an unconventional home with no building permits necessary. It is what draws me to build cool homes in this area, though it can always change.

    what's the life expediency on earthbag domes?

    • @nelhig333
      @nelhig333  8 років тому +4

      Think of an earth bag structure like building with adobe. The bags or tubes are in essence "loose forms" for the adobe material itself. Therefore, the mix is important for strength and resistance and why it's important to test prior. Then climate, foundation, finish over the adobe bags and roof protection (if there is one) all play integral parts as in any construction. I do know when I'm inside my earth bag house on a super windy day, I hardly feel of hear the force of the wind, so this tells me something about the solidness and hopefully durability of my structure. If you travel the Southwest, you'll see many exposed Pueblos and adobe homes that are still standing and are well over a 100 years old. Personally, I don't think I'll ever go back to building stick frame homes.

    This is AWESOME. I am still struggling with mine. Got the structure and inside pist and beam finished. The cob inside has been slow going. Got electrical runs made, have workable Rocket Stove/mass heater bit not sure if it is gonna be enough due to the size of the place. It's buit into the mountain side behind a huge boulder I call Moby because he looks like a whale. Having trouble with the roof. I built a steel Domed roof not sure how to finish it out with insullation.
    Trying different methods.
    Anyway, thanks for sharing. The place looks like heaven to me.
    God bless,

      Thanks for the comment! Good luck with finishing your place! Always a learning process. The roof was the tricky one for me too.

      @@nelhig333 I'm hoping that those who lost their homes to fire are open to learn this way of building. Over 250 structures on the other side of Lake Isabella.
      Not that anything is a guarantee, but this build is far less likely to suffer fire or earthquake damage.
      I really love the way you designed your floor plan!
      All the best to you, Nelly !!

    why the clay and sand formula???

  • @JWnFlorida
    @JWnFlorida 12 років тому

    I am sorry I do not follow why the clay and sand formula?
    to my understanding.. with strawbale, it is clay and mix it into a burrito! LOL!
    and then Lime after for water barrier protection. Or linsead oil? dont quote me on the oil type.
    as for the beams.. I like the idea of using the strawbale as infill, instead of as a structural element.
    I hope I helped! more than I hurt!
    Good Luck!

      winter cold -30 with spring and autumn rains, few sunny days, even in summer. we build houses of brick, wood or gas concrete frame, old houses all of wood 1945-1990. if you're interested here is my city en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staraya_Russa or UA-cam in search of Staraya Russa.
