you are so pretty, well spoken, and explain things in a clear voice! you've got yourself a subscriber :)
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching! :)
Thanks for the review. I appreciate hearing your opinions on the mic.
I would like to point out though that studio environments with little movement (like the talking head studio shots in this video) provide a perfect opportunity for boom mics.
Good audio is all about positioning. There are few places worse for the microphone than on the camera (we only put it there out of necessity when you are a solo shooter). The Rode Mic Pro Plus would sound WAY better than that lav if you were able to mount it just above frame and in front of you, pointed at a 45 degree angle down at your chest. Lavs are only used when better directional mics can't be placed close enough to the talent or the talent moves too much for a boom to be practical.
You said in your video the lav was better at cancelling out the noise of the room while the Video Pro Plus would pick up everything... again its all positioning. The lav is only "all about the voice an only the voice" because it is literally 6in away from the source. While you are right, in that the Video Pro is much more sensitive, you are comparing a lav in it's best position to a shotgun in it's worst positioning. Placing the Video Pro far away from the talent at a highly reflective wall... it's gonna give you an echoing room. Place it close and point it downward at the talking person's chest and it will give you MUCH cleaner vocal tones, way less room tone, and no muffling effects of clothing.
I'm sure you are aware of this and were only showing the wide shot in the studio to show on example, but it would have been nice to hear the the Video Pro in its optimal position (as the boom).
Also, lavs are notorious for sounding "muffled" or "tin-y" and this video is no exception. I think you could drastically improve your studio audio if you started using the Video Pro as a boom. Not trying to argue, just thought I'd share some tips that have helped me out.
thanks again, and keep up the great content!
Yay for SL2!
Is there a way to explain the difference between the 150 and 75 settings on the High Pass Filter. Is the 150 filtering twice as much???? Same for Output Gain Control, what is the difference in +20dB and -10dB???? Any particular situation that each mentioned setting would be more preferable??
Out of all the videos I watched this was the most informative!! It cleared my confusion. However I'm using a GoPro and am wondering if the video pro+ would look really big on it.
Wouldn't a lav still be the better choice? It'd be closer to the source and it'd give you more options to deal with higher winds, and allow you to travel more discreetly.
What about how they pro plus sticks out more at the back so it’s hard to use the view finder?
I wonder how the rode didn’t pick up the zooming sound of the camera ?
I use the video micro with a dead cat for semi close stuff and really like it. Its even better when wind isnt an issue cause its so compact.
Great video. when speaking on VLOGGING I don't believe external mics are a necessity, besides the dead cat factor on board mics these days are fully capable of picking up vocals clearly. The problem i find lay with the edit. If more youtubers learned how to compress and limit properly then they wouldnt need an esternal mic. I vlog with the M6, In my recent videos anyways lol, and whilst I do own an external I have found I never use it when vlogging. I mean im talking directly to the camera and when its compressed right it sounds fine. But hey every one has an opinion. great vlog. I subbed. :-)
I really loved your review. The one problem I am having is a very odd one and I am hoping you might be able to offer a possible explanation. I have bought, used, and returned every Rode mic I can find - including the Pro+ - and I swear I could not tell you the difference between the audio quality I capture with just my iPhone versus the audio I get with any of the Rode mics if you put a gun to my head and forced me to tell the difference. Every review I watch - including yours - showcases these amazing differences in audio quality but that is just not my experience. Why do you think I am getting absolutely nothing out of all the Rode mics I have bought and used? For reference...I am using them on my iPhone...in case that matters. Thank you for your time :)
is a deadcat necessary with light air? (2 or 3 mph=the is even lower than light breeze which is 4 or 7mph) Or the foam on my Rode Videomic Pro+ will be enough? I'll have it tomorrow but no time to test it before I use it (an outdoor event where there will be ony some light air as I mentioned)
hi i buy new one rode vid mic pro plus but i see in your video the light for power is blue and for me is green why and the mic no auto off and on will i turn off the camera i have camera sony 6500
Looks like a good fit for my T5i. Thanks for sharing.
Your sound doesn’t sound crisp or like your near the camera... maybe you’ll sound better in your studio using the rode plus you’re reviewing?
Good demo! Thanks from Sweden.
I LOVE YOUR LENS! IT GIVES BLURY THING ON THE BACK
Ahh, yes, that's known as Bokeh (pronouced BOH-KAY). Very cool and sought after among content creators, including myself.
At 2:25 you mentioned dead cat and wind protection; at the moment there is no dead cat, no wind protection available for the VMP+, unfortunately. The VMPR deadcat is too small.
The original Rode Video Mic Pro's deadcat works on the plus. I have it on mine and it works great!!
This sounds great. I have watched your recent video. Could you show ho did you manage to pull that deadcat onto the VMP+? The original VMP is significantly smaller than the Plus, so the deadcat for the original VMP is too small for the Plus. What is the trick? I'd really appreciate your help.
Maybe it wasn't the original deadcat for the pro but I asked for the deadcat for the pro and that's what they gave me!! I don't have the original packaging so I don't know exactly what size it was. I'll go back through my receipts and see if I can find out.
Sounds good.
I am definitely impressed with it!
very nice mic~! and good review as well Thx,
Thanks!
DAMN
THANKS
I am not an expert on audio at all, but wouldn't you get better sound using a nice recorder with a mic with an XLR connection?
XLR seems to bring additional size and weight... and expense. I do have the RØDE Reporter XLR mic, but you're carrying more things around and then spending more time mixing audio after the fact. Quality on my XLR based equipment is superb, however.
TheSnapChick Yeah, you do have to carry extra stuff and mix at the end, so more hassle.
When using the VMP, the quality is supposedly way better via zoom/recorder than via the DSLR body. Due to some technical things You could do some research on it :)
Nice.... studio ;
it catches a lot of wind
I definitely recommend a dead cat wind screen for windy environments. For the high amount of wind there was, it performed very well.
Great review Snap Chick! Really enjoyed it, just found the channel! You’ve got a new subscriber!
I actually find the Rode mic's audio quality to be on par with the $30 Takstar. But what the Rode mic does that I really love is auto-on when you put the camera on. That's VERY useful. Several time's I've done run-and-gone film making and missed the audio because I forgot to put the audio on. I don't think the feature is worth paying over $300 more for, though. It's only a matter of a little time til everyone is doing that.
you're comparing cheap Chinese crap to solid Australian company with 50+ years of experience. If you're serious about your sound, it's worth investing. I got my RVM+ on sale for 250 EUR and I'm glad I did it. Also Black Friday is coming soon) time to gear up)
more compact ????
Do you use the plus at a wedding? What other mics are you using in a wedding? Thank you Snap Chick
Great to hear your infield tests. Thanks for sharing.
I recently got one. Have not used it in the field yet. So your Review was timely, comprehensive and very good. Thanks
Hi Snapchick - we have a UA-cam channel and sound is an area of quality that we want to improve. We have lavalier mics and a RODE Me-L directional. I find it picks up a little too much ambience on the iphone. I'm disappointed with the audio quality of our lavalier mics, which one do you recommend?.
I've been using the Sony ECM-44B in the studio but I still occasionally use the RODE SmartLav Plus in the field. I also use Audacity to process the audio to minimize background noise.
Awesome video and so informative, love it.
I came for the rode review...but oh my god...you are gorgeous! !!
are you still doing videos???:)
As always great review ....
Thanks for the review! What camera lens combo did you use for this video? Looks great!
