    Script:
You love capitalism. Really - you do.
And you can't stand big government. Really - you can't.
Don't believe me? Then I'll just have to prove it to you.
Do you use an iPhone? Android? Macbook? PC?
    Read on a Kindle?
Watch TV and movies on Netflix? Videos on UA-cam?
    Shop on Amazon?
    Listen to Spotify?
    Search on Google?
    Send money on Venmo?
    Grab a ride with Uber?
    Drive with Waze?
    Book a room with Airbnb?
Are you on Facebook? Or Instagram? Or Snapchat?
You probably use many, if not all, of these things, and, if you're like me, you love them. In today's world, they're practically necessities.
Where do you think they came from?
From entrepreneurs with great ideas and the freedom to test them in the marketplace. That is what is known as . . . capitalism.
Now consider some other things you probably use:
Have you been to the DMV?
    Gone through airport security?
Mailed a package at the Post Office?
Called the IRS customer service line?
Or called any government office, for that matter?
    What's different?
Why is going to the Apple Store so fun, but going to the DMV so painful? Because one has nothing to do with the government, and one is the government. One needs to satisfy its customers to survive and grow. One doesn't.
The purpose of government is not to create products. And we don't expect it to. But if you thought about it for a few moments, you'd realize you don't want the government involved in just about anything private business can do. That's because profit-motivated individuals have to work to please their customers. You. Government agencies don't have to please anyone.
Call that IRS service line, if you doubt me.
Can you imagine if Steve Jobs had to seek government approval for every new design of the iPhone? We'd have been lucky to get to iPhone 3G.
Look at Uber. Just a few years ago, summoning a private driver in a few minutes who would take you where you wanted to go was truly a service available only to the wealthiest people. But now, thanks to capitalism, private rides are an affordable option for ordinary people all over the world. Until Uber came around, if it started to rain in, say, Manhattan and you wanted a grab a cab, good luck. Too many rain-drenched people and too few cabs. Uber had a better idea. Rain falls. Demand for rides spikes. Raise prices to incentivize more Uber drivers to hit the road. Ride-in-the-rain problem solved.

Its never the wrong video to point out forgotten knowledge. So simple yet how could we be so blind. Its like the lost art of home cooking or the ancient tales of something called sandwiches which are said to have been made in kitchens; how this could possibly be and who would make such things are still questions that elude us.

Charles: With capitalism, the *"rich"* also run the same risk of crashing and burning as any first time start up entrepreneur. Wealth has little to do with capitalism other than to slow the rate of fall. Bill Gates started with nothing other than a good idea and a lot of determination. Wealth had nothing to do with his success. Capitalism is about making a trade. I will give you one of my MS DOS CDs for one of your $5.00 bills. We will both be happy at the end.

Ocean: I am trying to grasp your argument. I am having some problems though. Inflation is distributed to all parties proportionally. How can you measure the significance in damage done to a large company with hundreds of employees against the damage to a small mom and pop shop? While one may require massive lay offs to compensate, the other may, in the same time frame, have to shut its doors forever. This; I think, would only validate my theory that wealth will only slow the ultimate decline to the bottom. .

+Charles Finley , I'm assuming you're being serious, but that is simply not how money works. If we have a set amount of money in a given economy, it just trades hands. It can never create more of itself. Therefore, if someone (rich or poor) is getting richer, someone else is getting poorer. Now, if you introduce more money into the system and give everybody some, then they all get "richer" but due to the inflation all the money is worth less and everybody has the same amount of purchasing power and is therefore the same amount of rich as they were before new money was introduced.

It's trying to make you want Anarchism because it's clearly trying to make you hate all forms of government and love the idea of companies running everything and not having to answer to anyone. And if you read the other comments here you would see that almost nobody who disliked this video is a socialist and instead are smart Capitalist who understand that a healthy society needs a strong government to provide us with certain things that businesses can't be trusted to provide us with.

Do you love tetris? If you do by that logic you love communism because it was made in communist Russia. All of those services you listed are great, but just because they were made in a capitalist world in which you dont have much choice than to chase profit doesn't mean it wouldn't work in a different system. There is a airbnb-like site called couch surfing that is free and not ruled by the supply demand profit driven system you glorify. It could exist outside capitalism, but it was made in a capital system like everything these days.
Counterpoint: do you hate samey pop music thats aggressively promoted and overplayed on the radio? Thats also a thing that capitalism made. If you hate it then you hate capitalism by proxy.
Thats a over simplistic way of thinking, isn't it? But this is the argument you're making.

And the thing with samey pop music on the radio, yes it was made because of capitalism, but the thing about that, as terrible as the music is, it's what people want. Luckily we have the internet to find music that we do like and so on. Capitalism gives you options.

Some of this video is very iffy. AirBNB has to be regulated because you have people who are kicking out the people who are renting their places, putting it up on AirBNB for a lot more, and the previous renter gets screwed over from the landlord lying or kicking them out only to put it on AirBNB.
Uber has their own problems with their drivers.
I think if both companies follow the rules provided or pushed for changes in given areas. I think both companies can be very much useful. But the problem is it's being abused left and right, and there is real world problems that come out of it.

it’s just a nasty secondary effect that makes ripples in local communities.
airbnb is cool but there needs to be balance

    • @vicenteyanez671
      @vicenteyanez671 6 років тому

kurikuraconkuritas is it wrong to seek the most benefit? If you take a coffee from someone who paid 10 dollars to get it and give it to someone willing to pay at most 90 cents is it something efficient to do? Or even moral? Of course not. Do you find unfair that someone has other priorities and is willing to pay accordingly to his priorities? When you charge more you are really distributing efficiently escarce resources to the individuals who value it the most, which is in all accounts the fairer option, the other methods you have are purely arbitrary, rely on luck or just to whomever came first. Which is by all definitions stupid methods while not being fair to the priority of the person. If i am willing to pay 1.000.000 dollars for a home but there is another bid for 2.000.000 then its only fair for the other person to get the house.
And above all that families being evicted will find another house eventually if they are willing to pay something whatsoever. But even if they are not willing to pay a dime, that family one has what it wants, and you cant morally deny them their right to be happily homeless.

  • @VasilijM
    @VasilijM 7 років тому +6

Yes, but capitalism must be regulated. We - consumers - are always after something that we NEED or get PLEASURE from. For example, we like to eat chips. Is it a necessity to eat chips??
No, we eat it for pleasure. If there are no regulations, you can put any chemical in your product for a better taste, which will make us sick after 10 years. We consumers will buy chips, because we love the taste. We will not know, that there is any problem with it.
Another example - you have a country-side. Not many people live there. Not many consumers for internet. Companies are not interested to provide internet there (cheap enough to efford it). These areas will become depopulated, because quality of life will be worse there (not only because of internet).
Sometimes we need government subsidies, in order to stimulate economic growth.

I have an objection, the smart phone was not an invention that can be attributed to free market capitalism, this is because the vast majority of technology used in them was originally developed by the government for use in the military. I largely agree with this, capitalism is the way to go, so long as it's not crony capitalism. However, I do believe there are some areas where government regulation is necessary. Most especially when it comes to safeguarding the environment and worker's rights. Big business would piss of both of these in a heartbeat if they did not have any form of regulation. Don't believes me, look at China, where corruption is rife and regulations in both these domains are hardly enforced.

Because that's really what it comes down to. Capitalism with limited government means lower taxes because the free market is allowed to thrive creating competition. Adam Smith, often described as a supporter of capitalism, described the desire for governments to ensure freedoms of a market. I don't remember all of them but basically the freedoms are what allows any person to have a chance to succeed. While I agree that some government agencies strive away from this goal, many that are criticized as "Big Government" are attempting to secure your freedom to participate in a free market system. Private organizations don't necessarily have the same goal because they were never meant to.

Honestly, the video is so manipulative. You could just as easily say
"You love Big Government. Really - you do.
And you can't stand Capitalism. Really - you can't.
Don't believe me? Then I'll just have to prove it to you.
Do you use Medicare? Social Security? Medicaid? Unemployment?
    Do you like roads?
Go to public school? Can't afford private school?
    Have police officers protect you?
    Firefighters rescue you?
    Enjoy safe and regulated food?
    Clean Water?
Are you kept safe by our soldiers and our military?
You probably use many, if not all, of these things, especially if you're poor, and, if you're like me, you love them. In today's world, they're practically necessities.
Where do you think they came from?
From regulators with great ideas and the ability to create these programs. That is what is known as . . . Government.
    Now consider some other things
Have you been denied health insurance?
Do you like big corporations crashing the economy?
    Do you like monopolies?
Called the Walmart customer service line?
Or called any company service line, for that matter?
    What's different?
Why is social security so helpful, but dealing with private health insurance so painful? Because one has nothing to do with the government, and one is the government. One is only motivated by greed. One isn't
The purpose of capitalism is not to help people. And we don't expect it to. But if you thought about it for a few moments, you'd realize you don't want the market involved in just about anything we absolutely need. That's because Government agencies and politicians have to appease the voter. You. Private companies don't have to help anyone.
Compare the the CEO and the secretary, if you doubt me.
Can you imagine if private businesses were responsible for regulating themselves? We would be lucky to get safe and inspected food.
Look at Roads. Just a hundred years ago, traveling across the country could only be done by train, even then it was reserved for the wealthy. But thanks to Government people could use all the public roads to get where they were going"
Don't take what I said as an endorsement of socialism. Understand that a lot of what i wrote was tongue and cheek. The point was that the video just cherry picks examples and I wanted to demonstrate how that would look coming from the other side, in order show that this is a poorly structured argument.

This is such a sneaky argument. There's a point here; Markets are often better at providing goods and services than bureaucratised government agencies. However, that point is used to support capitalism using a false dichotomy; Capitalism is conflated with any market economy, while non-capitalism is conflated with a command economy. In reality, capitalism is just a kind of market economy where businesses are predominantly owned by private interests, and non-capitalist markets economies are quite possible. Also, economies and either market or command; There's a spectrum, and most exist somewhere in the middle. But of course, most people's understanding of economics is limited to this false dichotomy, so this kind of argument argument ends up being quite effective.

Nathaniel Bixby it's a truly valid concern. That s why there are laws against collusion and price fixing. Problem is these days with such huge government overreach the misuse of power is often found with companies currying favor of elected representatives. The irony is, it is so often big business that asks for or at least benefits from more onerous regulations. After all, they have the resources like legal teams to work through the morass. Small businesses are at a huge disadvantage. I see that as a more pressing concern today.

Actually, the free market does this quite well on its own. If a company does terrible things then workers and costumers would seek other places to spend their money or work at, because the market would see what was happening and another company would pop up that didn't do all the exploitative things. At least this is how it works if people would get informed. With capitalism, all that is required is responsible consumers and if you're not, that's on you and thus you are at fault for contributing to the future exploits of a terrible company.

Maintaining the wealth is also difficult, especially when socialists try to chip it down for "equity". Hell, maintaining the wealth is even harder if you buy super expensive cars and live in really highly taxed areas.
The others were just very, very lucky. But they still had to keep it running or their luck would run out. The socialist types tend to act like they think a somewhat more upper class citizen (not me) is the exact same thing as a multi-trillionairre with many, many yachts.

They also incentivize unscrupulous investors to lease large numbers of apartments and condos and run them as illegal hotels with no consumer protection or health and safety standards, and this in turn causes housing shortages. Without capitalism, there would be no reason for anyone to do this, and there would be no poor people to displace. I saw this video in an ad and I was astounded. Am I a fifth grader who has never heard about the thing that every educator since middle-school has hammered into? I'm not? Then why are you insulting my intelligence. Also if you want me to be impressed with capitalism, you may not want to bring up two of the worst, most destructive companies you possibly could have. AirBNB is killing hotels, lowering the number of available apartments, and making traveling less safe (and using highly illegal practices). Uber is destroying the cab industry and replacing it with a service that can only deteriorate due to its high turnover rate.

Durodes Duvo - well many times due to lack of regulation companies exploit their workers which is where this economic system seems to fail. Time and time again it has been observed that corporate entities cannot self regulate. Personally I think a healthy mix of capitalism and democratic socialism is best or what is known as a mixed economy like most countries in the world. Capitalism often leads to cronyism and Socialism often leads to a state run oligarchy, a balance is necessary.

    • @chrisgitt

I looked up fascist economics and found that. also this is one of many cases that show obama as a fascist. the others all have to do with black lives matter similar to the Third Reich or the inner group of hitlers regime.

Many of the current social / economic problems of the West have been caused by Capitalists institutions moving out of the West, in an incredibly poorly managed way. This Import / Export of cheap labour and re-location to the East, to drive down wages, has left the working classes with an uncertain future leading to resentment and dissolutionment.
While the movement has been planned, and not by the left I would like to add, the impact has not. This ongoing re-distribution of wealth away from ordinary people to the top 5% earners is seriously damaging for our society.
The existing Capitalist structures are not addressing the consequences and are doing little to mitigate the impact. Indeed, I believe the situation is likely to get much worse as the state of play continues unabated. We need positive action / change now.

  • @MobinMGreen
    @MobinMGreen 7 років тому +5

Yes, but you need a healthy mix of capitalism and socialism. Everything in the video is only shows the good part of capitalism. The bad part is the anarcho-capitalist corporate side of this mess.
Imagine if we lived in a pure-capitalist nation where billionaires owned, the police, fire-fighters, infrastructure and the military. No social security or medicare, you know all the things that protects 50% of the nation from abject poverty. No environmental protection agency (EPA) or NASA. All the big government, socialist programs that overwhelmingly people love. It would be a horrifying condition to live in. Overlord class of 0.01% and 99.9% peasants. Every city in America would be like flint with poisonous water and massive poor population and tiny minority of billionaire who own everything. Capitalism eventually lead to oligarchy. Be careful what you wish for.

    • @AwesomePossum510
      @AwesomePossum510 7 років тому

Conservatives believe in a government that protects the rights of people in general. That means a military, police force etc. Some regulations are necessary as well. No one owns the air, so you should control how much pollution companies are allowed to expel. We can do without NASA though.

    • @MobinMGreen
      @MobinMGreen 7 років тому

Come on, you don't mean that. The innovation, exploration and straight up national pride that NASA brings for us is priceless. This random hate that NASA gets from the public is shameful. They have done nothing but making Americans proud. Can you imagine a living without GPS? Weather monitoring satellites. Hurricane tracking system; just to name a few. NASA saves lives as well as it makes lives easier.

I 90% agree with the video, just one problem: It's stupid and totally ridiculous to pay more for a taxi, just because it's raining, it's their job to give us that service, Airplanes don't do it, why should a taxi do it? Taxi drivers don't stop because they don't want to bother, not because is particularly bad or hard. Plus, they son't raise they're price because of that, it's because they give other exclusive or luxuries than the normal taxis of the world for just a little more money, well, more or less.

  • @astrahcat1212

There’s more to the free market than telecommunications services. You forget to mention that government employees are taxed on their own salaries to pay themselves, so in reality government is like a big tumor on the free markets prosperity. This prosperity comes with real labor in digging out, mining and manufacturing, shipping and logistics of raw materials into products, IN CONJUNCTION with sound fiscal policy such as trading in silver or gold. Historically, this has been what’s created prosperity, but then government like a tumor grows and like a leach sucks off the teet of this generated prosperity until one day it collapses in on itself.
