  • Mike demonstrates how to wood turn a change bowl or mens valet bowl - a small, thick walled change bowl on a wood lathe. This project would make a good gift for a man to put his pocket change and keys in. This bowl gets textured with the Sorby spiraling and texturing tool.

Great instructional video Mike. Learned heaps - your one of the best on the Web - thanks. I love your common sence proffessionalism, your moveable tail stock, adjustable vacuum and above all the excellent camera work. I'm 3 years late but this will endure.

Hey Mike! Great video. I haven't done any bowl work, but this motivates me to try. Is there a simple way to remove the tenon and finish the bottom without having a vacuum chuck?

Great video Mike. I have never made a bowl. A small one like this might be a good place for me to start. Take care of those special SHOP FAIRIES!!!

This is a great place to start with bowls. Smaller bowls takes less wood and are faster to turn. Mess up and try again with another blank. You don't need to be concerned with thick walls. We are taking the Shop Fairies to the beach for a week soon which should be fun. Since their Dad passed away a year ago, they are even more special.

Hi Mike, Thanks for sharing this project. Dogwood is one of those woods that I love to find and turn. It's an easy turn and produces a great looking product. I loved the cameo with Poet, so nice to see the little ones in the shop. All the best, Charlie

will you be able to turn the wood with the frostner bit drilled and mounted at the beginning step?

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning

Sorry, but I do not understand your question. Are asking about drilling a hole for pin jaws? I do not use a forstner bit in my turning process.

Always enjoy watching your realistic process, Mike! Hey, what do you have blocking chips from getting into your socks/shoes? Are those something you made or bought? I turn in shorts too (Texas). Always got a "chip limp".

I think they are called gaiters. My wife made them from some slick clothe with velcro strips. I believe you could use an old baby bib by adding velcro. When I wear shorts and forget to put them on, my right sock gets trashed and I get shavings in the shoe.

Right on, thanks! I think I have some old nylon BSA pants zip-off leg parts that could be hacked up for this. I'm glad you mentioned "slick". Good idea.

Great help to me Mike. I have my eye on the Sorby texture tool kit but expense is out of range. I see that the wheel is sold separately. Is it possible to make a tool handle holder for this. I was looking at your setup, did you make it?

I have the large and small spiraling and texturing tools. I made a separate handle/tool holder for the large spiraling wheel. Best buy on the testuring wheel I have found here www.hartvilletool.com/product/3572/spiralling-and-texturing

So it is possible! thanks and that is a good buy and I think no shipping where I live. So If I get this it looks like a bearing and can made a holder for it. Thank You. We are saving for swap. Hope to see you there.

The large wheels have a built in bearing. Not sure what screw I used but it matched the one that came with the Sorby and I picked up at Ace hardware. The bar is 5/8" and the shoulder bolt is about 5/16" but might have been metric. I believe it is called a shoulder bolt and uses an Allan wrench. You may need some small washers that fit against the bearing on each side. You did see this video right? ua-cam.com/video/GJ5xgEHSuJU/v-deo.html
