17:56 sentence looks like this when written: She, who felt she saw so clearly that it hurt, had felt that the truth, crystalline, was, with Murray, granted her (though not through his help, or anything he did: but just by his presence; as though, indeed, he were but a part of her that had been lost, a magnificent platonic epiphany repeated, and daily repeated: this, surely, was love!), felt, now, that the weight of emotion lay like a veil, a fine mist. I think I just had an aneurysm.
I don't get where they were going with this. You're supposed to write sentences so that they make sense and are easy to read, not to show how a stroke feels like.
I, a voracious reader, cannot fathom, understand, comprehend, your dedication to this: this task that (without proper motivation and dedication to the immense task of critical review, which you seem to possess) proves impossible for the majority of people; people who devour literature and, yet, cannot complete four of the most horrific books from this Goodreads list that you painstakingly analyzed- analyzed with the precision of a scientist- for us viewers. Okay, so now that I've written that awful sentence, when do I get my degree from Brown? 😂
I was gonna say that you took one for the team, but actually you took four for the team, so fucking kudos, lady. Lord, there really are some trash books out there. And thank you because I had the Messud book on my master TBR list and ............ DELETED. As an editor, that sentence you read aloud made my brain cry.
I think the term you were struggling for was "sample size" meaning that you needed to increase the size of the population reading said book to justify the rating, rather than having an average rating based on 2 people.
Amor Desdémona yes! I got tripped up by a series with totally fine reviews, plenty of 4s and 5s and it was awful. I just kept going because I thought the ratings meant it had to get better 😂😂 and soon I was too far in. And it was awful.
That’s why I’d recommend reading some the one star reviews aswell, the way people write their comments can give you a pretty good impression of whether you would agree with them and if they have the same taste :) Still had a few disappointments because I relied on goodreads, though 😩
She, who had felt she saw so clearly that it hurt, had felt that the truth, crystalline, was, with Murray, granted her (though not through his help, or anything he did: but just by his presence; as though, indeed, he were but a part of her that had been lost, a magnificent platonic epiphany repeated, and daily repeated: this, surely, was love!), felt, now, that the weight of emotion lay like a veil, a fine mist. THIS IS A GARBAGE SENTENCE. I literally don't even know what it means... All of these books sound awful!
I felt my brain trying to run away reading that sentence. I had to reread it 3 times to try to accurately count how many commas there are. What in the fuckshit. This is abysmal.
I follow you on Goodreads and saw how you kept reading all these books that you didn't really like and was wondering WTF was going on, but now I see WTF *was* going on!
Ellie Adele reading the commas out loud made it sound messy. I would have liked to hear it read in the rhythm that comes from using commas and half dots. Long sentences are a thing, so this reading didn't do justice to the style. Though of course we all have opinions, and I haven't read that novel (and don't think I will). Just would have liked to judge that sentence myself.
This was such a fresh take on the 'book rants' type of videos that I usually watch. You gave constructive criticism from multiple directions for each 'badread' (as well as some much appreciated sass). Well done!
I'm so...baffled by Palahniuk. When I was in high school I used to worship the guy -- Invisible Monsters was the first book I read that had a trans character in it, and the whole book seemed so fresh and exciting and cruel and I adored the structure and the narration style. And I kept reading his books and noticed that they're... all the fucking same. First person narrator makes themselves hit rock bottom to be able to understand that consumerism = Bad and the USA = not that great. Shocking stuff gets thrown in along the way. And then I realised that what I thought to be trans representation was just... part of the Shocking Stuff. An oddity. A *freakshow* element. And got so disgusted by the realisation that I never read anything by him again. Don't even get me started on how he treats every single female character ever. I don't know about authorial intent or whatever. He's a gay guy. I hear he's super nice to fans. Down-to-earth. Whatever. But his books are... gross. Not shocking, or edgy, just gross. As if he just wrote everything down he knows he shouldn't. But we have some taboos for a reason. It just feels like he's disrespecting his readers and want to see how much we can take, and then mock us for having empathy and a degree of decency?? Idk.
i still love Invisible Monsters for some of the quotes, but i re-read it recently and had a lot of issues with the trans representation myself. it's really really making me rethink whether or not the book is worth holding up as an example of good writing. i'm nonbinary, but i'm not a trans woman so i can't speak on the representation REALLY, and i would never argue with a trans woman's opinion on it. still, i got the same vibe you did. a lot. in a way, given when it was written, transgressive authors would really be the only people writing about trans issues. i appreciate that it was and is a taboo subject for many. that being said, i really think it wasn't....... great...... and i think people deserve better than to be written about solely as a punch line or "gotcha"
I haven't read any of this books...but gross people exist in real life... Lol The fact that it made people uncomfortable and disgusted was probably the goal.
I haven’t watched a booktube video over 7 minutes long in a long while. I watched this entire video because it was super interesting and a fresh idea for booktube. Thanks for being original!! (Sorry it was not the best experience..... 😬)
you're so brave and committed. i could never read books like this, they would be in the trash within seconds if i read anything like what you described
I can't stand writers who use million dollar words multiple times in every single sentence. I like Hemingway writers, who can write simply but somehow paint pictures in your head.
That sentence from the Claire Messud book! I laughed so hard, why is it so complicated and long? I read a book by Claire Messud called The Woman Upstairs randomly because I saw it at the library. Absolutely nothing happened in it. When I finished it, I was left wondering why anyone felt it necessary to write that book. It had no point whatsoever. I love this video! So much willpower to get through all of these books...
the way youre describing the emperors children seems to be like the point tho. everyones life is uneventful and i cant imagine what it would be like for something similar to 9/11 to suddenly happen out of no where. but it happened. and it shocked people. it scared people. it made people realize things. i think the author went for that.
The Emperor's Children sounds like a book my college creative writing class would hail as the best book ever written; literally everyone's stories in that class were written with a similar tone.
I ADORED this video -it's the first that I've seen of yours- because I only have patience for negative reviews if there is constructive criticism and legit reasons for why someone didn't like a book and you speak very well about all of these. 😊
As soon as you said that it sounded like you were making this shit up about Pygmy I started to laugh out loud because I was thinking exactly that. It sounded so ridiculous that it I couldn’t believe it was published. Crazy.
y'know i'm a writer right and sometimes i feel really insecure about my novels and my works and then i watch this video and feel a lot better about my work
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THAT SENTENCE YOU READ...!!!!!! Whaaaat in the actual hell. I read Almost Moon awhile ago & couldn’t remember much about it other than I really didn’t like it at all. Oh god I tried reading 4 Blondes and for sure dnf-ed VERY quickly. Alllll the nope!! I can’t believe you did this - freaking kudos to you!
I was listening to you talk about all the body shaming in 4 blondes and I was like wow that could be so triggering to a lot of people, and then you said you had quotes but didn't want to read them because they were triggering and I was like yes girl she understands
For the author of The Emperor's Children, run-on sentences are actually really frowned upon. I know, I'm an English major, it's a big faux-pas and will land you with a shit ton of points taken off on your essay by your English professor.
Catie Witt if it has 35.000 ratings, it looks like many people bought it.... I guess it's a name thing. If an author had success with a book before, publishers would gamble & publish even a really bad book from them, betting that many people who liked the previous book will buy it.
You did an excellent job researching and reviewing. I'd be interested in seeing a video about less known books, such as those that have little to no reviews. Maybe you could find some and give your thoughts on them.
17:58 - 18:40 That was *comma* by far *comma* the most excruciating experience of my life *semi-colon* I will surely *comma* indubitably *comma* never recover from this pain *exclamation point*
I would love to see you make this video again. I really enjoy seeing you rip books apart....is that normal? I also think you should make a video where you read the highest rated books on GR. That way you don't have to read only bad books
I feel like Goodreads eviews usually skew too high--books that I think are trash get 4/5 stars. So maybe you could pick the highest rated books and see if they are as good as the ratings suggest? Just an idea!
The plot twist in "the emperor's children" that you describe, about the sudden pop up of 9/11, reminds me of that movie with Robert Pattinson, "remember me". When I watched it, I was like... uhhhh what? K.. that came out of no where. * sigh *
My mom and I saw that in the theater the day it came out. I was probably about 14 and deeply in my Twilight feelings and we sat through the whole movie, which we honestly enjoyed up until the last 5 minutes when we noticed the date on the blackboard in the classroom and realized it was 9/11. Cue the entire theater errupting in screams of outrage. Someone threw their popcorn at the screen. It was great and we still talk about this in the rare occurrence we come across 'Remember Me' on cable.
LOL you've started with Palahniuk on a bad note 😂😂😂 Now you might try to read the best rated books and see if they're really that great (I dnfed 'The Nightingale' by Kristin Hannah recently and it has quite a high rating on goodreads 😕)
an alternative to the almost moon, for family dynamics and mental illness is The Girl In Between. It's drastically different from the almost moon, but its incredibly good and shows off mental illness and mother daughter relationships.
This is such a cool idea! I get sucked into Goodreads lists and rant reviews for books I didn’t like! Also you’re killing it in the pole videos! You go girl!! 💕
ive seen Fight Club and read Guts, so other than your review thats all i have to go on. I think, maybe in some cases a lot of his work is like...cringegore. Or whatever the name for overly disgusting and purposely uncomfortable would be. I felt like Fight Club and Guts had some purpose to them. Like hey...practice safe masturbation methods, check your curiousity. That book sounds like...it was just a dump for every horrible thing he thought he could some up with. Like A Series of Unfortunate Events, but for adults. theres no happy ending or redemption. Bad things happen, bad people exist, the end.
Ya know what, I'm late af to this video and all, but the first entry alone is quite reassuring, because as an aspiring writer myself, it's nice to see that even an author who has written something people ADORE can miss sometimes. People (it's me, I'm people) can get in their own heads a lot about writing, thinking they have to be perfect or it's not good enough. Fact is, even people who are KNOWN for their writing being good and life-changing can miss the mark.
This is honestly the most creative video idea I've seen on booktube in a long time. I can't believe you had the discipline to read all those terrible books! I'm super impressed that you were able to intelligently discuss the reasons why you didn't like them because whenever I have to read a book I don't like I say something like "I didn't like it cause it was stupid". Mad respect & I'll definitely be down for a second video! xx
Cool video. You just got a sub. Funny as you say "WTF did I just read" just made me laugh bc What Did I Just Read is a really good book that I just read 😂
Palahniuk may or may not be part of a white supremacy neo pagan group in Virginia so... there's that. (There's a Daily Beast article that mentions that he at least is on good terms with one of the creators, so take that for what you will.)
Kudos to you girl!! Lol I would’ve DNF’d every one of these! I have ZERO patience for terrible writing. But strangely enough, after watching this I’m kinda tempted to do this challenge...lol
This is literally such an amazing concept, I would just....never be able to sit through all of this! I'm so glad I watch your videos, you're so funny and kind and just wow.
17:57 "the emperor's children" sentence written out: 'She, who had felt she saw so clearly that it hurt, had felt that the truth, crystalline, was, with murrary, granted her (though not through his help, or anything he did: but just by his presence; as though, indeed, he were but a part of her that had been lost, a magnificent platonic epiphany repeated, daily repeated: this, surely, was love!), felt, now, that the weight of emotion lay like a veil, a fine mist.' thanks, claire, 14 y/os write better anime fanfiction that i'd rather read.
More like "badreads", amirite guys!?
I just snorted so hard it hurt 🤣
i wanted to comment the EXACT same thing, like same phrasing and all....this is weird
Woah that's a great name for a shelf
*throws tomato*
Peace Maker s
you have so much willpower i could never sit through all of this
@Emmmabooks I could see you getting VERY angry, VERY quickly haha
I could perhaps read one of these awful books a month, but 4 in a row?? That’s def rough
That example sentence sounded like something I’d do to make my essay’s word count higher
17:56 sentence looks like this when written:
She, who felt she saw so clearly that it hurt, had felt that the truth, crystalline, was, with Murray, granted her (though not through his help, or anything he did: but just by his presence; as though, indeed, he were but a part of her that had been lost, a magnificent platonic epiphany repeated, and daily repeated: this, surely, was love!), felt, now, that the weight of emotion lay like a veil, a fine mist.
I think I just had an aneurysm.
Hope Williams I don't even get what this means
ASLESHA SHARMA Me neither, dude
oh gosh i didn't realize it was that bad
I get what she's going for but she's doing it really, really badly.
I don't get where they were going with this. You're supposed to write sentences so that they make sense and are easy to read, not to show how a stroke feels like.
science side of youtube thank u
itsdivya hmmm shouldn't you be making us a new video?😂😂 🐸☕
Cherished Books true
omg, hi divya, hi! hi! hello!
arabella-grace brown HI!
itsdivya Oh yes you know me that I love science!
Your sacrifice for science will not go unacknowledged.
i gave this an automatic thumbs up because the planning and effort that went into this.... i could never.
thank u bb
1. Wtf why have people rated Pygmy higher than 1 star?
2. "I don't know why she had a vibrator just chilling up there." 😂😂
It’s just up there. Having a good time. Living its life. But seriously what the fuck and why the fuck
honeyytree congratulations your sentence makes more sense than the one in that god awful book.
you didnt do it right! your sentence still makes sense!
That sentence was one of the most tortured things I’ve ever heard...or maybe it was just plain torture.
Also, ‘receptacle for his seed’?! 🤢🤢
I was gonna say that you took one for the team, but actually you took four for the team, so fucking kudos, lady. Lord, there really are some trash books out there. And thank you because I had the Messud book on my master TBR list and ............ DELETED. As an editor, that sentence you read aloud made my brain cry.
I’m glad I could save u
Doing the Lord's work.
Alison Rose omg I was clenching my jaw so hard through that awful sentence 😂
I think the term you were struggling for was "sample size" meaning that you needed to increase the size of the population reading said book to justify the rating, rather than having an average rating based on 2 people.
Goodreads is more unreliable in terms of positive ratings. Many terrible books have over four stars. Although mostly they’re very popular ones.
Amor Desdémona yes! I got tripped up by a series with totally fine reviews, plenty of 4s and 5s and it was awful. I just kept going because I thought the ratings meant it had to get better 😂😂 and soon I was too far in. And it was awful.
That’s why I’d recommend reading some the one star reviews aswell, the way people write their comments can give you a pretty good impression of whether you would agree with them and if they have the same taste :)
Still had a few disappointments because I relied on goodreads, though 😩
to be honest, the best books usually have 3-4 star ratings.
Kira Peters it makes absolutely no sense. It doesn't seem to have point at all.
I think it basically means that it isn't so bad, and Murray helped her see that.
I felt my brain trying to run away reading that sentence. I had to reread it 3 times to try to accurately count how many commas there are.
What in the fuckshit. This is abysmal.
Who, spilled, the: commas?
am I having a stroke? this sentence made me feel like I'm having a stroke.
I CAN’T BREATHE THE COMMAS. HONESTLY ME WRITING AN ESSAY.
If I wrote an essay like that for an assignment, I'd probably fail
I get nervous when math is mention.
So these terrible books are being published, and some really good books are overseen by publishers.....
This was so creative! I'm sorry it went so poorly...
I follow you on Goodreads and saw how you kept reading all these books that you didn't really like and was wondering WTF was going on, but now I see WTF *was* going on!
Hahah I was wondering if anyone noticed!
I couldn’t focus on half of what you were saying because I was so mesmerized by your eyeshadow.
Understandable. Stila glitter shadows are from the lord
LaynaLovesBooks for me it was the yellow fingernail polish and the deep red lipstick.
Honestly when you read that excerpt from The Emperor's Children I got lost. Like...what where was that sentence even going?
Ellie Adele reading the commas out loud made it sound messy. I would have liked to hear it read in the rhythm that comes from using commas and half dots. Long sentences are a thing, so this reading didn't do justice to the style. Though of course we all have opinions, and I haven't read that novel (and don't think I will). Just would have liked to judge that sentence myself.
The commitment! I would not have the patience for this.
Tess Avery Books same!!!
This was such a fresh take on the 'book rants' type of videos that I usually watch. You gave constructive criticism from multiple directions for each 'badread' (as well as some much appreciated sass). Well done!
Loved this video! You could do a video reading the “best” books on goodreads and see if you like them.
daniel yesss, i would love that! 😍
Idk.
I think I might stay away from his book entirely
i still love Invisible Monsters for some of the quotes, but i re-read it recently and had a lot of issues with the trans representation myself. it's really really making me rethink whether or not the book is worth holding up as an example of good writing. i'm nonbinary, but i'm not a trans woman so i can't speak on the representation REALLY, and i would never argue with a trans woman's opinion on it. still, i got the same vibe you did. a lot.

I love his books... Finally not some femnazi author who thinks men are worthless
I haven't read any of this books...but gross people exist in real life... Lol
The fact that it made people uncomfortable and disgusted was probably the goal.
Diary & Rant aren't about either of those things?
I haven’t watched a booktube video over 7 minutes long in a long while. I watched this entire video because it was super interesting and a fresh idea for booktube. Thanks for being original!! (Sorry it was not the best experience..... 😬)
Aw thanks! This might be the longest video I’ve ever posted
you're so brave and committed. i could never read books like this, they would be in the trash within seconds if i read anything like what you described
that sentence KILLED ME OHMYGOD
JUST HAD A VIBRATOR CHILLING UP THERE AJSJDHXHS IM -
I can't stand writers who use million dollar words multiple times in every single sentence. I like Hemingway writers, who can write simply but somehow paint pictures in your head.
this is so funny i cant believe you committed that much time to trash lol
the emperor’s children audiobook was almost 19 hours..... rip me
bless u
Thanks for taking 4 for the team. And that burp at 8:01 deserves a solid 10/10

The Emperor's Children sounds like a book my college creative writing class would hail as the best book ever written; literally everyone's stories in that class were written with a similar tone.
I literally haven’t even heard of these 😂

You kind of look like Kirsten Dunst in my opinion.
Way to go for making actual FRESH CONTENT on book tube which often feels like formula after formula after formula. THANK YOU. New subscriber here!!!
As soon as you said that it sounded like you were making this shit up about Pygmy I started to laugh out loud because I was thinking exactly that. It sounded so ridiculous that it I couldn’t believe it was published. Crazy.
“I don’t really know math.” - me every single day in math class.
Your makeup looks awesome, what eyeshadow did use for this video
I used the stila liquid glitter eyeshadow! :)
Oh God how much determination you had read these books! I feel like I wouldn't get past 50 pages of any of these...
y'know
i'm a writer right
and sometimes i feel really insecure about my novels and my works
and then i watch this video and feel a lot better about my work
This was really fun and interesting. You should make this into a sort of series!
HAHAHA wowowow! so much respect for you... you put so much effort into this. THANK YOU FOR DOING WHAT WE ALL NOW DO NOT HAVE TO DO!
There are at least 3 copies of The Almost Moon at every thrift shop in my town... makes sense. Also, Pygmy... why?
This video is EVERYTHING! Please, make a part two. Because this was hilarious and amazing!
I think we all needed this video. For science.
Thank god for audio books lol u can control them speeds tho otherwise DNF
This was so great!!! It's like whyyyyy did a publisher let these books get published?? Those publishers definitely lost money.
Catie Witt if it has 35.000 ratings, it looks like many people bought it.... I guess it's a name thing. If an author had success with a book before, publishers would gamble & publish even a really bad book from them, betting that many people who liked the previous book will buy it.

Great way to point out someone was late and had just been running.
Probably not intended here tho
Do best books on goodreads!
YOU ARE INCREDIBLE, honestly all of those books?! Also thank you for not mentioning any numbers or specifics, means the world
That run on sentence was glorious omg. I’m still laughing 😂 great video!
I would love to see you make this video again. I really enjoy seeing you rip books apart....is that normal? I also think you should make a video where you read the highest rated books on GR. That way you don't have to read only bad books

LOL you've started with Palahniuk on a bad note 😂😂😂
Now you might try to read the best rated books and see if they're really that great (I dnfed 'The Nightingale' by Kristin Hannah recently and it has quite a high rating on goodreads 😕)
Laima I almost put the Nightingale down when I read it, but I am happy I finished it. I ended up loving the book.
maybe I'll finish it some other time...glad you enjoyed it though ☺
“All I can say to this book is what the literal fuck did I just read.” AAAAAAAAAND subscribed.
Can you do the highest rated books on goodreads??
I am just so thankful to this video that led me to find your channel
This video is AWESOME! Subscribed 👍👍 also, I really like your personality, you're so funny 😍

I love this video with a passion! You put so much work into it but you also review each book super honestly and really fairly and it’s great
This is honestly the most creative video idea I've seen on booktube in a long time. I can't believe you had the discipline to read all those terrible books! I'm super impressed that you were able to intelligently discuss the reasons why you didn't like them because whenever I have to read a book I don't like I say something like "I didn't like it cause it was stupid". Mad respect & I'll definitely be down for a second video! xx
How did these books even get published?!
I love that you’re calmly and somehow gracefully trashing on these books.
Btw you have really pretty blue eyes and you look like Kirsten Dunst. ✨
Cool video. You just got a sub. Funny as you say "WTF did I just read" just made me laugh bc What Did I Just Read is a really good book that I just read 😂
The Lovely Bones is one of those books where you read it and think "wow! the movie WAS better than the book!"
Palahniuk may or may not be part of a white supremacy neo pagan group in Virginia so... there's that.
(There's a Daily Beast article that mentions that he at least is on good terms with one of the creators, so take that for what you will.)
This was fun; super enjoyable.
I'll be avoiding those books.
If you do this again I'll be back.
Kudos to you girl!! Lol I would’ve DNF’d every one of these! I have ZERO patience for terrible writing. But strangely enough, after watching this I’m kinda tempted to do this challenge...lol
That crazy long sentence left me dead omg
YIKES! I would have never been able to push through these books!! THIS WAS SUCH A COOL IDEA THO YAY
My goodreads conclusion is that a high rating doesnt mean the book is good, but a low rating definitely means the book is bad.
Instead of '"the almost moon" read "the glass castle"!! Just as dark family matters but so good
OML that sentence!! What did it even mean?? So many commas!!
HOLY MOSES JUMP SCARE AT 8:01 FOR HEADPHONE USERS WTF EXCUSE YOU RUdeEE
I don’t think a burp counts as a jump scare
sarawithoutanH I HAD HEADPHONES ON FULL BLAST
sarawithoutanH When your burp is that loud, its a jump scare. Give a burp warning
ya dude that shit is gross, why didnt u just cut it out.
Rami Renno Leave the burps in, just warn us
queen of making videos on booktube
I find that sometimes low rating book are worth reading coz there is a lot of books I fell in love with. underrated book also deserve love
Maybe I’ll find an underrated one next time!
This is such a cool concept!! I really want to do this now.
I love the lovely bones! But I have never tried the almost moon,I would highly recommend lovely bones to get a better view of sebolds writing!!
This is the first video of yours I have come by. Instantly subscribed. Fantastic research and explanation of each book.
This is literally such an amazing concept, I would just....never be able to sit through all of this! I'm so glad I watch your videos, you're so funny and kind and just wow.
I love this take on this trend. I would love to see you do a part 2 to this experiment. Great video ;D
17:57 "the emperor's children" sentence written out:
'She, who had felt she saw so clearly that it hurt, had felt that the truth, crystalline, was, with murrary, granted her (though not through his help, or anything he did: but just by his presence; as though, indeed, he were but a part of her that had been lost, a magnificent platonic epiphany repeated, daily repeated: this, surely, was love!), felt, now, that the weight of emotion lay like a veil, a fine mist.'
thanks, claire, 14 y/os write better anime fanfiction that i'd rather read.
You reading that sentence with the punctuation was EVERYTHING!
