I always wear an apron when I cook and clean the kitchen. As you said, it protects the clothes, and it also helps get into the mindset of the task at hand. I sew, crochet, knit, and cook mostly from scratch. I have done canning and gardening. I have also been a stay at home mother for the last 21 years! I have worked part-time for just a few of those years, but for the majority of the time we have been a one income family. I know that this is not an option for many people, but we have made it work with many sacrifices over the years: driving older vehicles, no vacations, buying second-hand, etc. I honestly don't know how others manage having a career, raising children and keeping a home! Being a homemaker is a full-time job in and of itself!!
We use cloth napkins, cloth diapers, cleaning rags, we sit at the table to eat, I use vinegar and baking soda and sals suds and castile soap, I make my own toothpaste and body butter and chapstick, I wash my wool by hand, use a hanky, knit, write with a fountain pen, I can hand sew. I'm sure there's a few other things I do that are considered old fashioned. I occasionally cook or bake from scratch. I've only ever had 1 boyfriend and now we're married with a toddler so that's usually unheard of nowadays. We also don't have a microwave.
We don’t have a microwave either. Coffee is made in our 1968 percolator. So delicious! I’m a seamstress and teach sewing. Just taught 7 gals how to make aprons vintage 1950! I have vintage tablecloths, My husband and I say Good Morning to each other and sit at the table.
I relate to this so much! Almost everything in our home is vintage or antique and I use it all, I don't really have time to maintain collections. I love finding antiques in working order that I can actually use in my daily life. I cook all our meals, bake, can and preserve from our garden. Like you, I love to study history, especially how folks lived their day to day lives. I also sew and quilt and always try to reuse, fix or repurpose items before buying new. Meals at table with linens and candles. When I don't have flowers growing in the garden, I will gather winter greens and make arrangements with them. I might have a problem with the amount of beautiful dish sets I have 😬
I love that you preserve things from your garden, what a great way to have delicious goodies all year.
To continue, I use rags. Have vintage dish towels. I have a collection of vintage hankerchiefs! Rain bonnet! Forgot about those. I do a lot of handwork. I sew vintage refashioned clothes. How can I share some of my recreations? I always write cards and get them for 10 cents each at the thrift shop. We must be long lost sisters!
I love that you discuss the overlap of vintage and sustainability. I sort of drifted over to vintage From trying to be more environmentally friendly. "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without," is what I strive for. We've eliminated single use paper (except toilet paper!) and plastic. I use rags for cleaning, dish cloths for washing dishes. We use a clothes line. I mend, sew, and repair. The big "old fashioned" thing that we do is food production and preservation. I keep a garden, chickens, and a milk cow!

I always cook from scratch using herbs and veges I've grown. Recently I started making herb salts, and syrup from Rosemary and Mint. It's a pity the majority of people forget how tasty homegrown and homemade is compared to processed crap!
Wow. So nice to find like minded folk. I do nearly everything you mentioned. Always have used stove kettle. No microwave, clothes dryer. Most nights a sit down dinner, use aprons, tablecloths, cook meals mostly from scratch. Got back into embroidery and cross stitch last year and I've always mended clothes where I can. And I use my vintage and antique items. It all just nice and simple. But I do so miss letter writing, I used to love it so much.

I, too, relate so much to this. I am not a "collector", especially of things that I just have to dust. I have inherited so many wonderful things from my grandmothers. I have an iron skillet that belonged to my great, great, great grandmother. It is almost 200 years old and I use it every day.

I can relate so much to what you’re saying! While I am grateful for the perks we have for living in a modern age (freedom, getting closer to equality, science, medicine, etc) I do feel younger generations are loosing traditional values. When I look back at footage from both ww eras I am amazed by how strong people were then. Even when having close to nothing people still dressed up, constantly came up with creative ways to stretch all resources, people worked with their hands, children weren’t attached to screens and created games, people created beautiful items as hobbies. I don’t ignore the fact that racism misogyny was high and people were cruel to those they thought were less and that is something that should never come back. However general values of then are good for the soul, and that’s why I love vintage and starting to make the leap into it then ❤

I live in a really tiny apartment so my vintage-ness consists of knitting, hand sewing and pin curling my hair, but I day dream about one day having a garden where I can grow vegetables... And I would love to wash and dry my clothes like an Edwardian, I think that would be fun!
Even small things can make a difference.
I knit and use a fountain pen to write my journal. No microwave either x
We churn butter, have a percolator coffee pot, do not have a microwave or a television in the house, I love slowing down even though friends think we are crazy!!!
Want to get a stove percolator for my dorm but not sure if it's safe or allowed. Probs will get one when I move in with boyfriend, who doesn't drink a lot of coffee
I have a polyester scarf tied to my purse that I could use to protect my hair from rain BUT I usually use it in the summer to sit on park benches and restaurant patios in shorts because we live in Arkansas and 100 degree days with 70% humidity are not uncommon.

I have some very simular values. Although I'm by myself now. My daughter made me some place mats. Im in to cottage style or grandma style. Ive made some cleaning stuff and have old rags. My grandma always had handkerchiefs. My daughter bought my a cloud umbrella. Im 60 and want to criss stitch, I had at one time knew how to knit, but forgotten. 😢 but hey their still time. Yes, handwriting is till in style! And old quilts from grandma's. How about those hanging wooden quilting in the livingroom growing up. I have done making laundry soap. My hair is in rollers as I type and listening to you. I have some dishes in 1970 china cabinet. Loving it!!

I love the eco-friendliness of some of these things. I've been looking into getting a reusable coffee filter myself.
I highly recommend it (or at least my husband does). It's so great when you can find "vintage" ways of doing things that have the added bonus of being eco-friendly and economical!
This video was a delight. I have been implementing all that has been shared here for 30 yrs now and am nearing 70, I will continue. One thing we did was got rid of the t.v. about 25 yrs. ago. Although we have a dvd player and watch movies from time to time, we bought a victrola player several years ago and some mornings and evenings we will sit in our parlour and listen to the records of the 1920's for 30 min. or so. All these 'old fashioned' ways of living are theraputic if one will try and incorporate one or two ways and will see that other ideas will begin to flow and soon you will not want to go back. I cook from scratch, include handwritten notes to my Ko-Fi supporters, sew costumes by hand up to the 1920s then I switch to my 1920s treadle machine for things up to the 1950s. Then I switch to a 1955 Monarch machine, I have a goal to make more me-made vintage style clothing, I crochet, design, and create my holiday decorations. I think that is about all the old-fashioned things I do on a regular.
I always have a handkerchief. Liberty handkerchiefs are my big splurge.
They are so useful and I love finding pretty ones.

I so agree the modern lifestyle is so disjointed as far as family, free time, pace and just enjoying the moment. I love vintage things for their story and continuing that story in a new way. I still iron, use rollers, have an- up to-date address book, paper calendar and even balance my bank accounts manually with a paper register. Im very tactile. (And OCD.) I enjoy doing it. I also love to send cards with handwritten notes. I love vintage inspired and things. Aprons are great for saving your clothes! I’m super neat and organized but somehow, I cannot stay clean while baking or cooking. 😂
I like using a clothesline when weather permits. It just slows me down and relaxes me. I have chickens in my backyard. Cleaning out the coop and collecting eggs, as gross as it might sound, is so fun for me and brings me back to nature. I live in a big city, so a peaceful backyard is a blessing! One of my dearest friends who recently past would always mail out letters and now I have them to remember her. Her letters are such a treasure!
Drying on a clothesline is wonderful, especially on those crisp sunny days. I envy you that you have chickens, I've told my husband that when we retire in France I want chickens. I watch coop clean out videos on TikTok and it's just so soothing.

I love chickens! We do not have a clothesline but I have a cotton white dress that when washed, I do lay out on the grass on a towel at times.
I haven't had a microwave in 20 years ... Don't miss it ! I use an electric kettle and a French press to make coffee .. no filters needed.. No toaster of any kind.. I just don't like kitchen clutter...
Watching this video allowed me reminisce about my journey. Though mine started a LONG time before you. I started embroidery at the age of 9. It has come in handy throughout my life. I have collected vintage/antique clothing since I was 6, still own items I collected at 10 years old. I am currently turning 65 in May. So this has been a life long passion. But my biggest passion is paper ephemera and Purses prior to 1930. thanks for the journey

I garden both vegetables and flowers. I cook, can, dry or freeze what I grow. I compost. When I work outdoors I always wear a scarf over my hair and carry a handkerchief (allergies!). I often wear bib overalls for messy work. I knit and crochet. When able, I like to bike to the store.

Vinyl records! Somehow as soon as I play them my phone addiction is cured, I'm productive as heck, and I picked up sewing/altering for the absolute first time in life - all because of the vinyls 😄 Also, reading. It's not old-fashioned per se, but these days there's so much more focus on reading self-development and personal growth books, whereas my go-to is always fiction. Playing an old-timey instrument (I play blues harmonica, and, of course, collect vintage harmonicas).
Yes, listening to vinyl records is awesome. They sound so much better, I think.

I write letters, read books, crochet doilies, knit socks and sweaters, play classical music on my acoustic piano, set the dinner table most evenings with real silver(plate 😉) and cloth napkins, utilize a dressing table, can tomatoes and broth, wear dresses most of the time, plus aprons when doing housework, don't allow tv screens in the public areas of my home, throw cocktail parties and dinner parties, play records (mostly big band swing and jazz), make our bread, put photos in photo albums, use cloth handkerchiefs, and look at my husband funny if he tries to wear a t-shirt to church. Do all those things make me vintage?? I thought I was just old-fashioned 😂

I knit, crochet, and sew my own clothes. I dabble in embroidery, soap making, and shuttle tatting. I also cook and bake from scratch and mix everything by hand. Because I make my own clothes, I also take the time to mend them if needed, because I spent a lot of time making them and money on quality fabric with which to make them.
I don’t wear much makeup, but if I do (usually lipstick and/or eye makeup), I use ponds cold cream to remove it. Sometimes I use it to cleanse my face even without needing to remove makeup, because my face gets really dry in the winter if I don’t diligently moisturize it. I don’t know how old fashioned it is to stay out of the sun and wear lots of sun hats, but I have a hard time remembering to wear sunscreen and it usually just makes my face feel hot and sweaty, but I’m also very fair skinned and get sunburned easily, so hats and shade it is!
I wear skirts year round no matter the occasion or weather, so I’m developing a collection of petticoats to wear under my winter skirts when it’s cold, so I stay nice and warm - warmer, in fact, than when I was still wearing modern clothing and freezing my ass off no matter how many layers I put on.
One of my favorite “old fashioned” things that I use is my working vintage iron. I use it to, well, iron my garments as needed as well as for all my sewing needs. A spray bottle with water is used if steam is needed. As long as I’m not in a hurry, it’s kind of fun to take a garment that’s a huge wrinkled mess - my cotton summer skirts are the WORST offenders for this - and turn it into something smooth and crisp looking.
Oh I bet that vintage iron is amazing! I've seen a few really nice ones in vintage shops and the surface is always so nice. And they are heavy!

Hello, I love vintage knitting and sewing. I also smock children clothing or knit baby sweaters for gifts to moms who appreciate it and realize how much time and love goes into each garment. I also have furniture that was passed down or vintage pieces of quality. I have my great grandmother's tea cart and other pieces from my grandmother and mother. Growing up we always had dinner at the dining room table along with Sunday dinner after we got home from church. I also like to keep things simple, no crock pots, air fryers or other appliances. I do like my dishwasher and microwave. I am firmly in 2023 but enjoy the 40s style of clothes. There tailored style and details are so appealing to me. people dont understand me and say I'm old fashioned. I listen to tapes in the car, use a landline, use typewriters, use a player piano, use a flip phone, dont use internet on my cell, like to write letters. I don't know how to explain to people why I choose to do these things. they don't get it.
Facebook Marketplace has been my furniture fairy godmother since the pandemic started, delivering pieces I could never afford new. After I sign off I'm going to go make a cushion for a MCM Lane cedar chest I just got to use as a bench - it still has the tags inside, looks like it has never been used. Then I'll be tacking the mending pile...also, I spy an adorable apron my mother made in your collection! It was so great to see one of those again. :D
Listening to records is my absolute favourite way to listen to music. It’s move expense and limiting in some ways too, but it just makes my heart sing each time I put one on 😍 Also, I love sewing with my vintage sewing machines, even though they don’t have all the bells and whistles like my modern one. It’s just special to make 1940s clothes on a period appropriate machine 🧵

Hi Christine! Great video. I do most of the things you mentioned. In addition, I sit down every afternoon with a cup of tea in a nice china cup and saucer.
Recently got some little white teacups(?) at a secondhand market and I love to use them for evening tea. They are so cute, the gold edge on the rim unfortunately has largely worn off..
I love that. Eating and drinking from beautiful cups and plates is so uplifting.
I do use a microwave due to having adhd and being a student and I want to enjoy a hot chocolate milk sometimes. For tea, I do use a kettle, I handwrite notes for some classes but use laptop due to executive dysfunction and not wanting to lose notes. I do air dry a lot of clothes because they are delicate. I also prefer using vinegar to clean both countertops and my watercooker/kettle. When it comes to media, I use UA-cam but also would like to watch dvd's more and use my vinyl player more often. I like the aesthetic of analogue clocks more but find digital easier due to dyscalculia. I would want to hand-wash more and not use a microwave but due to my disabilities, I want to make life easier for myself. So I draw with UA-cam on, but it's usually long form and interesting, slow content.
I enjoy more analogue/mechanical ways to live, sure and sometimes feel guilty for not doing more but I feel cooking from scratch, gardening, canning etc. requires a lot of focus and energy that I do not always have, so I do what I can, which is mostly buying secondhand, going to a seamstress or ask a family member to repair things, use my bike and walk.
I did recently buy a plastic rainbonnet and maybe I look like a grandma, but at least my hair isn't getting wet! I also love writing letters and making art and cards for loved ones.
Another "old fashioned" thing I enjoy doing Is boardgames and puzzles.
I enjoy printed photographs too and want to learn how to sew. I am however only 26 and still live with parents, so I do not have full autonomy yet, which makes things harder. I also really love buying my fruit at the local grocer and use loose leaf tea when I can.
I think it's fine to be proud when you can do more than this, but I get annoyed and dislike it when people act morally superior because of it.
We all do what is going to make us feel good and what works best for us. And that is different for everyone. I love that you've figured out the things that help you the best way possible. That is what is important. There is no need to feel guilty for doing things differently than others, it's wonderful that you have your routine that is comfortable and functional for you. Little things matter and as we evolve and grow, hopefully those routines can evolve and grow with us.

True, guilt does not help, social media is rather good at making us compare ourselves. When I wrote this comment, I felt nice listing up ways I slow down and realised... hey, I am doing pretty well for myself as someone who largely grew up with technology and electronics. 😌

What a wonderful episode! You are a genius at creating content! I fully support and agree with your choice. For example, I also do not use a microwave for the same reason that you and always cook and heat food on the stove. I always brew coffee on the stove as well. I support the environment and use only cloth kitchen towels, I think it's nice and cozy, I don't use paper towels at all. I have handkerchiefs that my mother sewed and I love them very much and use them with pleasure. Just like you, I love vintage wood furniture, I do not have many such things, but I love them and cherish them very much. I like to use vintage enamel washbasins, I don't like plastic basins. I do not like plastic jars and use glass. I like to read paper books and I love old editions with good paper and illustrations. And I still write everything in a paper diary.
I agree with using glass or enamel instead of plastic. I also try and do that when I can.

Whenever i order something online, i end up finding myself less modern stuff but Vintage or Retro cause why should you wear a blouse which has no shape, form or makes you look bigger ? (oversized, too wide, the Frustration if something is not available for your size)
Great video. I do a handful of these. Sitting down at the dinner table every night is a must. I too didn't have this growing up and really enjoy the slow pace feeling after a fast paced day. One thing I do is hand washing most of my laundry. I try to buy natural fiber fabric and garments so tossing them in the washing machine and dryer just breaks my heart. So when I have to wash my clothes, I prefer a hand wash and air dry. Takes time but the clothes look much neater... and I iron. People are confused when I tell them I iron my clothes but natural fibers like cotton and linen wrinkle and a good press and steam is much safer to me than taking it to the dry cleaner and using harsh chemicals.
I recently bought a handheld garment steamer. More modern but extremely useful and it's just water anyway. 😌

You can always find vintage aprons online, but I've also bought them at flea markets in Europe. Keep an eye out, I'm sure you'll find some.

I loved this video. So many of these points I do. I am certainly never without a hankie or rain bonnet! My parents had me late in life so they grew up during the eras we all mostly gravitate to. My father could cook, mend and properly darn. My mother made her own clothes. While we have such nice modern conveniences, they do tend to take away time one would use to gain skills. But, I need my phone. 😂

I have vintage cookware and dinnerware and have always believed it should be used, but some of it I've had to sadly not use. I had lead poisoning a handful of years ago and became very sick before discovering what it was (due to prolonged home renovation). Unfortunately, vintage cookware and dinnerware can be dangerous for leaching lead. Please check out LeadSafeMama, a wonderful resource to learn more, and find out if your vintage items have lead or not. I even had a cool vintage ice chest/cooler I was planning to actually use, but found out it was known to leach lead. No food will be going in it. I used to be one of those people who scoffed at this stuff, you know, 'I ate lead paint growing up, rode a bike without a helmet, rode in the back of a pickup...'. But when I got so sick from lead, I changed my tune and try to educate people that it's a REAL thing! Oh, and true story: I had a friend metal detect my 1820s farmstead last summer. He got a strong signal at one point and dug up a piece of broken glazed pottery. He was perplexed: "There's no metal in the hole. I don't get it!" I knew immediately what it was, and told him the pottery was coated in lead. He waved his detector over it again and was in disbelief at the strong signal it gave!

Sorry, it's a silly saying here in the U.S. mostly on social media, which is a swear word. I'll have to censor the actual spelling of it. It stands for "As F#@K" Essentially it just emphasizes the word or saying prior to it. I hope that makes sense.

Please do be careful using some of the vintage and antique glassware for food. Many items contain lead, so do your research, or have it tested before consuming food from it.
