SHOW DESIGN 101: Wonderful, spirited performance. From a professional production design standpoint, this show lacks merit, and Cavaliers' designers opted for a lazy "variety show" format. The show features disparate musical selections haphazardly joined by the common word, "rose" for the corps's hometown, Rosemont. (One of the tunes is from American Beauty, a newsworthy film about pedophilia, in front of the camera and behind it. Why choose it?) Top-level drum corps shows feature a cohesive concept with a through-line, point of focus and depth, all lacking here. Typically in a "variety show" format like this, one act doesn't "boo" or shoo away another act in the show (the barbershop quartet). That results in the devaluing of an act that the audience may have liked, and raises the spectre of infighting and ugly competition among the featured cast members. The selected tunes lack cohesion and logic, and make for clunky transitions like 0:50 and 7:31. Avoid making the audience ask, "Where is this thing going?" The show ends with Sing, Sing, Sing, usually performed as a bawdy, no-holds-barred couples dance. It was last performed in Cavies' show almost 40 years ago, during a strained time for the corps.
I understand what you're saying. I just feel like this year contained no real rules and it was made to just have fun. And I think that's all this is.
