What a great artist John Curry was! He skates to the music with such grace, harmony and perfection! HE IS THE BEST SKATER EVER! We miss you so much John!

People often forget just how good John was at school figures. He was not just a great artist and free skater - a true all round skater.

I pretty much stopped watching competitive skating when they cut out the judging on figures .
To me it was an incredibly interesting part of seeing how the craft was built

This piece is quintessential John, and sums all all he wanted to do to making skating an art form. Here to me he achieved that goal. Others have commented on John's 'simple edges and basic skills': I saw a good example of that when John was filming a show for the BBC. During a lull while the technicians were moving the lights around, he came over to the barrier and amused us by spelling out 'j-o-h-n' on the ice, on one foot, without putting his free foot down.
Now *that's* control of your edges!

Actual figure skating--a real pleasure to watch. It's nice to see a program devoted to skating without the intrusion of jumps every few seconds.

He probably had the best loop footwork of any skater in history. You don't see loops that good now days.

This Curry-Tharp collaboration is so complicated and rich in technique and artistry. So beautiful. Exquisite glide at end.
    Heaven.

This was beautiful! Some of it was literally school figures skated to music. Brought a whole new meaning to school figures, helped to make them beautiful. I think that Mr. Curry was skating on a relatively small ice surface too which is more difficult.

School figures set to music, performed by the balletic John Curry. Tracings, edgings, lines and flow. Curry, the calliope of the blade. John Curry, the epitome of beauty!

There was a chunk of time in figure skating that belonged to John Curry. This period of time was his and his alone. There was, and never will be, an intruder.

Exquisite. I don't see Twyla Thorp's name as choreographer although I think it is her work. This performance for me is ice skating as good as it gets, not showing off acrobatics that become dull after awhile because there is no there there! iIt's my all time favorite piece, which I saw him skate in NYC in the 70s. thank you for posting it.

    Ah, so great!! Excuisite!!!
This is a form of artistic expression, absolutely fine craft.
I love the axel jump sequence and one-foot sliding.
Somehow people nowadays misunderstand "artistry" in figure skating as posing or acting.
I think annual compulsory examination in order to participate international competition might be good discipline for the young skaters.

It's Albinoni's Trumpet concerto in B flat major.
Now if anyone can tell me if it's available now on cd I will be eternally grateful. I used to have it on an LP recorded by Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the fields but that is long since lost.

    Try watching "After All" without
the music to see how well Curry
    achieved the work he commissioned
from Twyla Tharp (1976) while still
    retaining all ice skating
    technique including basic
    figures no longer in Olympics.
But keep your eye (and camera) out
for David Liu who brings similar
skills and ambition to ice skating
and dance. He may achieve Curry's dream
of elevating ice skating to an art form.
