What I think happened in this song visually:
"What did you think might happen?" She asked, her voice hoarse and rumbling in her throat. She took a step toward Abuela's still, stiff looming frame. "What did you think I might say?" She shook her head, her curls bouncing as she took another prowling step toward her prey. "Did you expect me to.." She growled, her eyes scanning her family, under a scrutinizing gaze. "...Just forgive you?" She folded her arms across her chest, which heaved in heavy breaths. Her shoes clacked on the tiled floor as she began to pace, her steps falling in time with the cracks that crept along her footfall. "Well I’d say sorry, but I don’t feel like I should be.."
"For years I’ve all kept your little secrets" She continued her pace, raising a hand to silence her Abuela, who opened her mouth to bark a retort. "And for years I’ve kept all of mine" She continued, throwing her arms out in annoyence, before pushing her glasses up her slim nose. "But secrets are no fun

"And tonight I’d got a couple things to get off of my chest" She growled, not noticing another pair of eyes watching her. Through the walls..
Bruno dashed through the passageway of the walls, shivering as he passed a few cracks. He gave a shakey breath, listening to the pure anger escape his daughter's voice. "Where were you when I needed you to be on my side?" He glanced through a crack, eyeing his lovely Mira yell at her family, cracks following in her wake, circling around the floors.
"I will never be strong enough but at least I don’t patronize!" He let out a few gasps of breath, skidding around a corner, dodging a low hanging beam.
"Can’t make the flowers grow but even so I showed you all respect!" He leapt over a gaping hole, swinging across another with the assistance of a steel metal pole that hung out of the crumbling wall.
"No more lies!" He landed on the creeking wooden planks of flooring, balencing on the balls of his feet before continuing his sprint..
"Open your eyes!"
Mirabel hung her head, her shoulders shaking. "I have believed for my whole life that the problems with this family were me." Her voice was low as she breathed heavily, her arms shaking at her sides.
"Don’t you see what we all are?" She asked aloud in a light bark. "A collection of stars" She answered for the family, flicking her eyes up to Abuela, her brows furrowed in distaste. "Just waiting for their turn to burn away..."
She snapped her head up, slapping off Julieta's hand, that rested on her shoulder. "Don’t touch me!"
"Do you really think this is the life he sought?" She waved her hands toward the walls in which her father hid. "Five years was all we ever got."
"Instead of dancing through the halls" She twirled around, clasping her hands together mockingly.
"he became a ghost inside these walls" She growled, slamming her foot downward, taking a step toward the family, the candle shaking, its flame flickering.
"You thought he was the monster except you forgot about me!"
Bruno, slammed open the painting, dashing out into the second floor hallway. His eyes landed on his daughter, his eyes widening. "Where were you when I needed you to be on my side?" Mirabel was shaking, tear brimming in her eyes..
"I will never be strong enough but at least I don’t patronize!" He dashed down the stairs, stumbling toward his daughter from behind.
"Can’t make the flowers grow but even so I showed you all respect!" She raised her voice, stomping toward the others, waving her hands wildly. "No more lies!" In a quick bound, he wrapped his arms around her frame, holding her back. "Open your eyes!"
"And instead of telling me of my mother!" She fought with her binds of her fathers arms, not registuring it was him. "You decided to hand me over to another!" She gestured with her head to Julieta, her lips drawn tight. "And I mean with disrespect

"Do you think he’d be proud of who you are now?!" She shouted, her voice ending in a menacing growl.
Her shoulders shook in exaustion as she slumped forward in Bruno's grasp. Bruno, held on tight, bending his knees to keep his balence, nearly stumbling forward as well.
"You say we can’t talk about Bruno no no.." Her voice was now hoarse and tiresome, spoked lower than usual.
"Is love something I’ll never get to know? No no no.." Bruno let out a breathless gasp at his daughter's words. Is this what she had been dealing with without him around..?
"Where were you when I needed you?" Her voice got stronger, her frame shaking powerfully in his grip, her knees suddenly buckling.
"Where were you when I needed you?" She crumpled up, tears springing in her eyes.
"No more lies." She shouted, slamming her fists on the ground.
"No more lies..!"
"No more lies!"
Bruno bent over, holding onto his crying daughter, his breath catching in his throat.
"Open your eyes!"
"Open your eyes!"
The last thing Bruno restered was his daughter's cries and screams, deep rumbling cracks, the falling of brick and concrete, and the cold wind on his back, and his own tears falling.

@@AnyaFitel Omg thats awesome. But for me, i imagine the same just then instead of the end where she's crying on the floor, she got her powers and then became a villian and destroyed that casita. But yours, oh boy that is one of the best things ive read.

Why do I imagine this song takes place immediately after Mirabel tries to get Isabela to hug her? But like instead of the whole "I never wanted to marry him, I was doing it for the family!" thing, Isa says "Why are you even trying to make me like you?! You're not even my actual sister!"

Jesus, the possibilities of how all of this would look if it was in the movie are blowing me away. The best and main idea to me would be as Mirabel sings, the Casita starts to crumble worse and worse, only for Casita to not care. While keeping the Madrigals out of harm's way, it would use the last of its power to constantly give Mirabel a stage above her family, allowing for her to fully explain without a shadow of a doubt why the Miracle was dying and finally get them to hear her.

Her anger towards her family lying to her is so apparent in this. Its a beautifully written song

That line hit hard, welp I'm gonna go cry now
In each "open your eyes" the candle's fire flickers and grows, melting down the more the fire grows, until it blows off.
In the part where she asks "do you think he'd be proud of who you became?" Pedro's portrait falls behind her and his eyes are burned because of the fire, Abuela's face is full of tears.
Bruno looks fearful and concerned and keeps trying to climb to where Mirabel stands alone, Julieta and Agustín trying their best to help him - they all love her, after all.
When the fire goes out the house crumbles completely, leaving only Mirabel standing next to the spot the candle had been just seconds ago, the whole spot completely untouched. Mirabel then crumbles and wails. (Allegory: the spot in wich she stands remains the same, but Mirabel crumbles just like the rest of Casita. Allegory 2: she still gave more important to the candle than to herself, seeing as she crumbles, but the Candle's spot doesn't).
1:45 the “stars” thing was actually genius tho (to parallel with “A perfect constellation, so full of stars and everybody gets to shine” and “but the stars don’t shine they burn”
Is it wrong if I think this Au’s Mirabel unlocks her connection to the candle here? Each of the height in emotion making her empowered through the successor of the candle’s power with manipulating the sparks to show them her emotions and as the casita fades, the magic is flowing into Mirabel

So im going to take a guess here. Mirabel finds out her whole life has essentially been a lie, screams at the entire family, and casita crashes down.

If Encanto ever gets a Broadway musical (it definitely will), then they 100% MUST put this in during the scene where Mirabel tells off Alma in front of the whole family
This is my take on what this would look like
[This is the scene where Abuela and Mirabel were arguing, but this time Abuela drops the bomb about Bruno being her true parent, Abuela tries to apologize]

[Mirabel is standing on the second floor of the house just near the candle, she refuses the apology, Abuela gets angry]

I'm kind of picturing she's singing it to the whole family as a group? The only lines that make me doubt that are "you handed me off to another" which makes me think she's singing it to Bruno, which is odd when she's referring to him in 3rd person in the rest of the song.

I have an idea for what could happen next in the next part of this AU!
After Casita crumbles, Mirabel, sick of her family, breaks free of Bruno’s arms and runs away. Bruno, Abuela, Julieta, and Agustín chase after her. But Mirabel, having a head start and being younger, outruns them and they lose her in the forest around the village.
Mirabel keeps running until a voice tells her to stop. She turns around, and the ghosts of a man and a woman are standing behind her. The man is her abuelo, Pedro. The woman explains she’s Mirabel’s mother.
Mirabel bursts into tears and collapses, and the ghosts try to comfort and reason with her. They start singing a reprise of “She’ll Never Know”.
Here’s the lyrics I’ve come up so far:

Oh my god the EMOTION put into this. A powerful mix of sadness, betrayal, frustration, anger I-
this def sounds like she was talking to the whole family for neglecting her or treating her and Bruno like the black sheep of the family. This is the song that happens when Abula Alma and Mirabel are arguing with each other and since the whole family is there in the background might as well call all of them out for the verbal abuse she got from everyone Esipcally Alma. Except for Antonio he's 5, doesn't know the whole story about Bruno leaving, he actually helps Mirabel & Bruno to hide from Abuela and treats her like a big sibling more than his other siblings in the film.
Definitely worth the wait. I was just wondering what the context for the song is? It sounds like Mirabel is going at her family while also going at Bruno for leaving her.

@@LadyRenaissanceUA-cam Oh, cool. Can't imagine how she feels. She probably feels like she has no one to turn to in this situation. The family who neglected and lied to her all these years on one side, the father who left her alone on the other. I think a lot of people can relate to this feeling. And this song captures that brilliantly.
I feel like she sings to every family member one by one like:
"Where you were when I needed you to be on my side?" might be for Camilo who she was (probably) close to but who became to busy bc of work and another friends.
"I will never be strong enough but at least I don't patronize!" - maybe to Luisa (maybe they have some conflicts also bere Idk) or to Abuella
"Can't make the flowers grow but so I showed you all respect!" could be for Isabella (remember her mocking Mirabele).
"And instead of telling me of my mother you desided to hang me other to another!" - for Bruno for leaving her.
Some words she might tell to Pepa, Juliette, Alma or for them all bc of all things they made Bruno come through.
In the end, she's done bc of everything the whole her family did to her. Her pain and rage made Casita get ruined.

I know the emotions in this song way too well, my family kinda did the same with me. Lied to me about who my own biological father was, and I never allowed myself to feel that betrayal when I found out, and now this helps me deal with it, about almost 10 years later.
My mother lied about the same thing, all my life I had grown thinking this man who was in my life only during my childhood was my father, I had even had the same name as him. But turns out he wasn’t, rather another man who also was never in my life was, I didn’t find out till I was around 12

Ahhh I knew she would react like this!! Ughhh this is why the last song made me so sad, because even though I knew where Julieta was coming from, something like this was inevitable…. Ahhhh I’m super invested in this story!! This one was just as emotional as “Stay Away” but in a completely different way… Agghh it’s so good! It really explores how Mirabel feels. I’m kind of glad she doesn’t blame Bruno, and sees how the family were the ones to push him away… Hopefully the rest of the family opens their eyes to the truth… Ha! “Opens their eyes”…

I love how the song title is "Open Your Eyes, the same line from "Waiting on a Miracle" and "All of You." The songs were written by Lin Manuel Miranda, and usually he includes small parts from other songs, this can be seen in Hamilton; the Broadway musical

this is a really good song for a Villain!Mirabel AU! an i honestly want to read a FanFic about it.
I feel like this song would’ve been Maribel’s villain song after her grandmother banishes her once everyone saw Bruñó’s prediction and Alma is forced to banish her to save face from the villagers.
I think this could've been another ending for the Encanto movie - or probably could make it into the 2nd movie. When Mirabel finds out that Bruno's her biological father and the family never told her.

The background has all of each of the respective colors for each side of the family, the main is a blue-Ish color that might represent how [in the AU, I haven't read much on it or anything so don't scream at me if I'm wrong] Julieta and Agustin had been only 'portrayed' as her parents, and the green-Ish tint could be to show how Bruno was actually her parent?
And then the lights being Yellow, red, Orange, and slightly green, well come on, that just speaks for itself!

DUDEEEE, I love the new original songs that various artists are creating, but with all the respect in the world, I think they are leaving Mirabel aside.
I know, I know, she is the protagonist, but she is still ignored and overlooked even by the fandom itself. In fact, It's really funny and sad at the same time.
This is why I appreciate this piece of art so much, it is a wonder.

The way her life turned out, it's a miracle she (or Bruno) didn't become a villain. However, a protagonist turned antagonist really would have been something different for Disney. Maybe it could have made the movie more interesting.
