- Dave Matthews and Friends, this time the Trombone section of the MJO take on the Hoagy Carmichael favourite arranged by Dave. Jim Pugh, Larry Farrel, Dave Taylor and special guest Conrad Herwig are the Trombones. With Chip Jackson Bass, Terry Silverlight Drums and Dave at the Piano
Now!!!!! Thats what a trombone section should be. Jim Pugh - you are the best.
That first soloist has a palpable Frank Rosolino influence.
Some mean Bass Trombone, there Dave.
I love this classic tune and played it in jazz band in high school and listen to it all the time. It’s a surreal and proud feeling to watch my dad (Conrad) in his element here. Shameless plug for his new Latin Side of McCoy Tyner album coming out in May!
Playing the piano solo with his left-hand...very cool.
That was absolutely fantastic. Sounds like some of the old arrangements from the mid fifties with Kai and J.J. I was a brass player (trumpet) but my heart was always with the trombone. It just doesn't get any better than this.
+Gutpile Charlie Amen dude!!
+Bob Cat Glad you made the comment. I came back and listened to this wonderful recording again. It really is as good as it gets.
@@GutpileCharlie facts
Both solos show magnificent technique, but Conrad stands out for musicality. His solo keeps coming back and subtly reminding you of the melody- keeps it interesting.
Trombone players always have the spiciest licks!
And the prettiest chicks 😀
@@WarrenMautereras a trombonist, I’ve never had any chicks. Ever. 😅
Wonderful chord arranging. Good musicianship. All moods satisfied.
There is nothing like the sound of a beautiful bone section. Thank you for the upload!
Go the bones. Nice work gents. Beautiful, lyrical playing. Great inflections and style. 4 amazing players with the very solid rhythm section. Doesn't get any better. Love your playing.
Beautiful, congratulations of me here in Aracaju City - Brazil.
This just made my day. Being a jazz trombonist has never felt better.
Try being a lead jazz trumpeter. Now that's on top of the world. LOL!
This makes me wish I’d chosen trombone as my ax in grade school. One of my favorite tunes and instruments!
David Taylor...so solid on that bass trombone!
Trombone sounds way cooler played in Georgia on my Mind
Wow again! I like this even better than "Paper Moon!" These men are all tops in their fields. Jim Pugh: Jazz, symphony work ---none better. Conrad: Great jazz trombonist. Larry Farrel: Long-time popular NY artist. Dave Taylor: Arguably best and most sought after bass trombonist around today. What a quartet!
They make it look so easy! The laid back trombone sound! Wagner said that the trombone section is the voice of God! He was not so far off!
Great Tone, Pitch and style............
❤great trombone artistry! Thanks guys😅
As a trombonist myself, I'm very in love with this work. So lovely :3 Wish I could play with them someday. I wonder if I could find the sheet music to this in my lifetime.
Does anyone know of a way to purchase this arrangement?
Trombone and jazz orchestra wonderful
What make and model is Jim playing on? Looks like a King 2B silver sonic. Can someone verify/ correct me if I’m wrong?
Ima female bone player n I csnt get enough of thus video!!
SHELLZ591 Same here :)
even at my old age I would LOVE to play this music
Patrick William did a record with Urbie Green some years back called "Senior Blues" featuring Grover Washington Jr. (tenor saxophone) and Urbie Green (on the trombone of course)
I don't think I couldn't enjoy this
Probably the fifth time I’ve watched this video. Great trombone work!
Jim Pugh, my near favorite trombonist, second only to Bill Watrous.
All of the Manhattan Jazz Orchestra and related videos were made by Panasonic of Japan as general interest tv shows. They were subsequently released as Panasonic Sound Essay DVDs volumes 1 thru 10 and released only in Japan. You may be able to fine them on line.
So much soul! God damn!
This is dedicated to the late trombonist Roger fox from nz rip Roger.
Superb playing really enjoyed this first rate :-)C
Love the arrangement, solos, rhythm section and that bass trombone!
no subtlety on that pedal C gotta love Dave T
It was solid, no doubt.
I'd love to purchase this arrangement.. It doesn't look like the David Mathews web site is functional- the links in the store are blank. If anyone has any information on obtaining the arrangement, please let me know!

Melvin Nimtz I know it’s found in Charlie Parker’s “Yardbird Suite” solo
I know it’s found in Charlie Parker’s “Yardbird Suite” solo
great! yeah Conrad!
I love Dave Taylor, but in this particular instance he should have played out more. Maybe it's just a crappy recording.
Aaron Garcia Yea, I think his mic messed up somewhere in the middle.
He is definitely filling up the horn. Has to be the mic or equalizer.
When is this ???
...very smooth! great!
I need this arrangement!
vacations hahaaha
I love Jim Pugh's playing, but on this his mic is too hot.
What does “too hot” mean in this context?
