The intro music and the cutscenes in general scared the shit out of me was a kid! It took some months before I could find courage to play it on my own!
Karateka, a classic! I used to play it with friends, usually at night to give it ambiance and mystery 🥲 And to think that such simple games made us so happy and today's kids are not satisfied with hyper-realistic games, mein Gott! 🤔 It's the same with movies. If only we had a time machine!
I remember getting a pirated version of this game for my 130XE on a floppy from a kid in my junior high cafeteria. The flip side of the disk had strip poker lol
Never knew this game was released on the Atari. I think this is about the time I started transitioning to the PC world, and I played this on my IBM PC Jr... LOL Remember that? And I thought it was so amazing with the fluid body movement. Unlike anything you would have seen back in the day.
I used to play the hell out of this, Bruce Lee, and the Last Ninja. My brother is a huge Commodore 64 collector. I think he owns almost every game and bunch of 64 hardware. Sucks he lives in Texas. So we can't get together and get our game on.
At the time, this was really something special. Today, the extreme lag on controls will frustrate all but the most stubborn gamers. If the speed was a little faster and the buttons more immediate, I would still highly praise Karateka.
se attaccavi la principessa anche con 1 solo pugno, dopo aver sconfitto l'armata delle tenebre, BOSS compreso, ccu un timbuluni t'arramazzava 'nterra murtu! :D
I had a pirate version vor the ATAI800XL, and the fight with Akuma didn't work. The game was corrupted or something. I could play that final fight in 2001, when i got the emulator.
Prologue: "High atop a craggy cliff, guarded by an army of fierce warriors stands the fortress of the evil warlord Akuma. Deep in the darkest dungeon of the castle Akuma gloats over his lovely captive, the princess Mariko. You are one trained in the way of karate: a Karateka. Alone and unarmed, you must defeat Akuma to rescue the beautiful Mariko. Put fear and self-concern behind you. Focus on your will and objective, accepting death as a possibility. This is the way of the Karateka." Epilogue: "And so this adventure ends. The evil Akuma lies vanquished, the beautiful Mariko safe in your arms. For the first time in memory, the village basks in the sunlight of peace. But beware: for the true Karateka, there is always a next time..."
I don't remember well, the game is 40 years old. To the best of my memory if you run into her, she'll kick you in the groin and you'll die. The player probably slowed down at the very least moment.
This was the easiest game in the entire universe to beat. The worst of all beat-em-games. Played it once on my Atari 600XL, beat it the on the first play, then put it away to never play again.

This was the best version.
Yep, a little faster than c64 version.
This game took one whole side of a cassette to load but hearing those first two notes at 0:12 was pure magic.
Played this for hours in the day 👌👌👌
I had this game back in the day!
So I expected a playthrough of a very familiar game but it turns out I never actually played Karateka because this is all new to me!

Strip poker the prohibited game at that time. Cool !

first time i played this game, i forgot to take myself out of fighting stance when moving towards the princess. . . .
Wow! It reminds me Prince of Persia!!! 😍
It's the same creator
The moves are much sharper than the other versions.
Which version does the Karateka does that "Yee-ah!" sound before striking his opponent?

I had this in the old days, but found it way too laggy/unresponsive to play :( But the animations were impressive these days.
Yes, it played very laggy. A few more MHz for the CPU would have been good.
It was laggy for me using the joystick, but with the keyboard it was way more responsive.
Laggy for me too but somehow I just accepted it and considered it poetic license.

How do you kick that fast?
Holding the kicks keys.

I remember when I could back off takuma one step close to Mariko.

Biggest surprise of this amazing game was what happened if you approached the Princess like you were about to fight her...
She is kicking of punching you.
Are kind of weird the kind of hats and masks does that Karate dojo use for their disciples. Seems like some kind of egyptian thing.
Que nostalgia xd
i never finished this game, i tried so hard, but....

3 kicks in a row? how you do that?
Yep, it´s possible. Even I got Akuma retreat near to Mariko in my best playing times ago.
I only played this game on nes.
DUNNA DUNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I wonder what would happen if you try to fight your girlfriend at the end...
If you approach her in fighting stance, she delivers a fatal kick. It was maddening after all that effort, yet hilarious!
