I give you to consider that it might be better for you to get corona in Germany than in the USA. During your stay in Germany you should have a health insurance that covers almost all costs for a hospital stay. In the USA the financial burden for your family would probably be much higher.

TheManWithTheHat im in her same program. A lot of the kids don’t have insurance in the US, but we’ve all received insurance for our year abroad. Many kids really really don’t wanna get sent back since if they catch it in the US, they won’t be able to afford medical costs (if they get sick enough which is unlikely, but a valid concern)

Additionally, children/youth are at very low risk and Germany has more specialized hospital beds.

Hopefully, the people in the US will finally realise how important a public health insurance system is and that it has nothing to do with lack of freedom. Not having a health insurance is just gambling that you don't get ill. The German health insurance system was introduced by Bismarck who was known to be a communist...

    • @juliadiers1927

Nikioko you are right and i agree with you BUT there are also a lot of other factors to consider here. American culture is very different, people are on average way more unhealthy, way more obese so it would cost a lot more to have free healthcare for everybody. That said, i definitely think that the US should drastically change their healthcare system and do it more like the German system. I just wanted to point out that's it's not so simple to just say "do it like Germany" because the US doesn't have the same circumstances. The American economy works in a very different way and unfortunately it's not that easy. But i really do believe that American politicians should really do something and realize that not everything (especially health care) is not about money but about caring for your citizens

Also there are people like Rick Santelli on mainstream television telling people that everybody should get infected just to get this over with and prevent the economy of taking a hit. I've never heard anybody saying that shit out loud in Europe.
So yeah, I'm willing to double down on my original statement.
      BTW, I said this:
      1) the healthcare system of the US sucks, that is a fact, millions of people are uninsured or can't afford their co-payments or deductibles if they are.
      2) the dude in charge (Trump put VP Mike Pence in charge for this issue) does not believe in science and is a vaccine denier, that is also a fact, he is on the record saying these things.
      3) I said I'd feel much safer... What do you know about my feelings, that I don't?

Wow, I'm always impressed by how intelligent you handle the real questions in life and that at the age of 17. To sit down and talk about a question that did cause a headage for all of us and not a single one did have a real answer is the halfway to handle it. As I said no one did have right now the ultimate answer, but as a father, I could imagine what your parents are going through right now, so maybe one fact that the Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" did teach me yesterday could be helpful for your family. The minister/secretary for healthcare in Israel had ordered that any visitor who comes to Israel had to go to quarantine, to protect the citizens of Israel, but after that, the Prime Minister did except US visitors from that rule with the argument that the US did have so little corona cases that a quarantine is far above the top. As "Haaretz" is a more liberal newspaper and in 9 out of 10 cases against Prime Minister Netanjahu, they checked directly Bibi's claim and did found out that the ratio between population and tested folks in the US is the lowest on globe, why (for example) Isreal did have the 3rd highest on globe. Or read the comment from Alexander Nordic here in the comment section. Even if I would recommend the website of the John Hopkins University because this topic is too complicated to trust any media outlet qz.com/1814380/interactive-map-from-johns-hopkins-shows-coronavirus-in-real-time/ it is not the way that I would call them fake news but I have witnessed so many false interpretations from any sort of media that I have started to do my own research.

I think the most important thing is safety and there should not be any compromises on that! So which country is safer? Here is the data: Germany has 2 Coronavirus deaths with 1,317 cases = 0.2% fatality rate. The US has 732 cases and 27 deaths = 3.7% death rate. Based on this data it seems to be much safer to be in Germany.

    • @huawafabe
      @huawafabe 4 роки тому +14

The problem with those numbers is: The US isn't testing as much as Germany. So there are more people with the virus but aren't confirmed cases. Of course that causes a higher death rate.

    • @oneukum
      @oneukum 4 роки тому +1

Those numbers are based on different approaches to testing. They are not comparable. Only the growth in the numbers within an area that uses the same methos of testing counts. There is not much of a difference in these rates between the countries.

I understand all the legitimate points that you have mentioned and I totally get that it must be a stressful situation. But I really think you had the best conclusion by saying to be going through this with a positive outlook, trying to stay healthy and not to panic. The authorities are just trying to protect who is more in danger and to contain the virus so that there will always be enough capacities in the hospitals for the vulnerable cases. Too many infected persons at the same time are just harder to deal with.
I'm not really sure if anyone would be better off in the U.S. right now. The virus seems to spread in most countries anyway in our globalized world. So the U.S authoritie could place a travel ban on Germany but it's more likely that they will be dealing with the same problems on U.S. territory anyway.

Dear Montana, you are not overreacting at all.
I can understand how stressful this decision is.
There is a strong likelihood that you will not get sick of this virus because of your age.
Unfortunately there is a strong likelihood that many people of old age will be affected by COVID-19
if the public life is not limited in big dimensions right now.
Italy did not do this and the health system right now is collapsing.
Considering that the rest of your exchange here will also be limited in many ways
    - no museum, cinema, theatre, travelling - makes the decision even harder.
How ever. You were lucky enough that your parents came to visit you just before the crisis.
What ever you will decide, all the best to you.
With your GERMAN knowledge you can even consider going back now
and coming back to study here when we are through this.
    Take care!

    Dear Montana,
whatever you do, best wishes to you. Hopefully you won't catch it. Yet even so you have a very very high chance to survive as a healthy young woman.
I believe you are immediately health insured here in Germany as an exchange student. So, even in the unlikely chance that you caught the bug, you'd have a very low hospital bill compared to the USA.
Sure, I completely understand that you are feeling a bit unsure about your loved ones at home.
I admire your rational approach to this topic. Panic won't help.
Restricting yourself concerning large crowds is probably reasonable advice currently. So traveling among other passengers in a crowded airport and plane might not be the best idea.
But then again, the chances are still very low to catch it in any case.
So, whatever happens, hopefully you will still have a great time here.

There are some thoughts about that that every student has to ask themselves and both decisions are understandable.
Staying in germany you'd profit of a very modern healthcare system and since as a student you had to get health ensurance, your treatment wouldn't cost you much, if infected. The chance of an infection probably is as high here as it would be in the US. BUT: If infected, it might get complicated to travel back to your family for quite a while, meaning you'd spend your time alone abroard. Even if not infected there is the risk of borders to close down completly and airtravel between countries to stop, so you might get stuck in Germany for a while.
Also the thought of someone in your family getting infected and you being half a world away is something that might be hard to handle for some people. I can understand everyone who wants to be close to their family in this situation, although there would be nothing you could do, if infection stroke.

  • @chunye215
    @chunye215 4 роки тому +1

The US is doing very little testing. People get denied testing even with strong symptoms as long as they don't have any links to other infected people (in some states). Up until now, most people even were charged hundreds of dollars for their test, although that hopefully changes in the near future. But the number of unreported cases is most likely pretty high over there. Consider folks with low paying jobs barely making ends meet. They sure as hell won't wanna pay for getting tested, and can't afford taking a pay cut while staying at home stick either. Iirc only twelve states have laws that make sure you still get payed when you're sick at home.
Weigh this against your desire to be with your family during this time, which I can totally understand.

  • @dnocturn84

I think traveling is one of the worst options right now. In my opinion, as much people as possible should be staying away from public places were larger numbers of people come together. This goes especially for train stations, trains, airports, planes, etc.
I hope they won't force you to leave early. You are safe in Germany, our health system does work, in case you get hit by that virus. There is a possibillity, that hard times are waiting for it and for all of us, but still. And of course this will hit the USA just as well. So "hiding" back home in the US isn't really a thing, but I guess staying with your family whould be beneficial in other ways.
But this virus crisis might affect your options to get anything out of your program during the next months. I cross my fingers for you, that it won't!
Possibly beeing forced to stay away from school is actually a sad thing. It's a shame that no school ever prepared for such a situation. Taking class by using the internet is technically possible. This way everyone could still get something out of it during times of isolation from each other.

I would assume doing international travel would increase your chances of catching the virus right now and if you have already caught it without realizing you would be spreading it further by leaving right now. Germany is probably not the worst place in the world to catch the virus as people in the comments have pointed out and its probably best to just stick to the usual safety measures (wash hands, don't shake hands for greetings, keep a bit of distance to others etc.) and hope for the best.

I and my girlfriend are not at all afraid of the virus at all. I am a mathematician and she is a doctor (of medicine, of course), so I know the odds and she knows the danger. What we are afraid of is the spreading hysteria. And yes, that's basically what it is.
For your situation, I can only say this:
    1. It is highly unlikely the you are going to catch a SARS-CoV-2 infection at all. I know that they are talking about 60-70% of all the people in germany are going to get an infection, but that's meant on a large scale. Even if the spreading would continue on the recent scale it would take months before you are in real danger statistically. (And no, it is not an exponential rate, it is a logistic one. We are only in such an early state that they seem like the same.)
    2. Even if you catch an infection, it is very unlikely that you get badly ill by it. You are young and seem healthy so getting an infection isn't even the worst that could happen to you, because you'll be immune to the virus afterwards at least for a certain time.
    3. Even if you, for some reason, would get seriously ill, our medical system would treat you at least as good as the american one. I don't know if you have an insurance back in the US, but you have one in germany. You'll automatically get the best possible treatment here. The only possibility to get a better treatment in the US would be to really have a lot of money or a very, very good insurance.
    4. If you get an infection, it's maybe even better for your loved ones, especially your grandparents, if you are abroad and can't infect them as well. Being abroad for an exchange means that you are likely having a lot less social interaction then at home, even further reducing the likelyhood of being infected or infecting someone else.
    5. What is the fuss all about anyway? Of course people are going to die, which is a bad thing. Of course it is dangerous and it is a good thing to try to contain the virus as long as possible to slow down the spreading, yes. But panic buying or many other reactions that can be seen recently are absolutely out of place. We will not run out of toilet paper, why should we? Surgical masks don't protect you from beeing infected, they only protect other of being infected by you, if you already are, and they do so only for a very limited time of about 20 minutes before they are trash. They are only for medical staff and for the sick. Same goes for germicides. As the name say (unfortunantaly it doesn't in german language) they are against germs. That's mostly bacteria. They only have a limited efectiveness against viruses. Still, some persons are hoarding them in litres while some clinics are running low? That's plainly stupid.
Two years ago, we had a flu epidemic in germany with around 25.000 deaths. That was really, really bad. Was there any panic? No, there wasn't. And there is absolutely no reason for this now.
Stay calm, stay rational, stay hygienic. And for you, Montana: Just stay where you are.

As a semifinalist for the CBYX program, do you think the corona virus will effect my chance of going to Germany?

The situation is obviously much different for you since you‘re abroad and away from your family, but leaving those super important factors out, I think I’d feel much safer here than I would in the US at least right now. Of course being in the middle of Europe might bite us in the a.. eventually because shutting the country off is probably easier in the US, but right now I think the level of public information is much better and more honest here. I don‘t want to imagine living in a country where you can‘t trust your government on matters like this and unfortunately that‘s the impression I‘m getting from America right now.

The only thing I definitely cannot (under)stand here in Germany are those disgusting people stealing disinfects from hospitals 😠 or those people who literally buy ALL the god damn loo paper 🧻, soap 🧼 and toothbrushes from the supermarkets 😒😠 like wtf honestly?! I’m freaking out!! Two weeks ago you couldn’t even buy any milk anymore in the supermarkets nearby because everything was GONE 😒 ..
