I am so glad to see another ham that prepares EXACTLY like I do! Last field I did a MAJOR update to my js8call and Pi system! Had nothing working all day! Sorry for you but at least one ham feels your pain! 73
Pity the sockets at back of ft 817 are so close to the antenna socket with your antenna right there too. I run .5 m cables between rig and pc/interface think it helps keep rf down.
Why don't you just make an Endfed 1/2 wave antenna? Those short whips are just rubbish. Also, this type of antenna only needs a short counterpoise, so it might help with your soundcard issues. I plan on buying the LAB599 or an IC705 and this is the antenna I'll be building for field operations.
Why is the antenna right by the tree? That is a reradiator, all into the roots full of water molecules, under the lappy. Mount the radio and antenna to the bike. If you wanna get real crafty, go on the pier, and drop a ground wire or 2 into the "counterpoise" lake. I did that with a cb with the Gulf of Mexico, and had an 8ft whip clamped to my Huffy, in 1997, not recently, I swear.
@@oh3spnfinland718 Still counts as a field day, all that equipment and the antenna not so much. Those lil Yeasu's have great reputations, with 160m to 70cm, but the first gen. has discontinued final transistors. There are lots of options, but a bike mount antenna review is rare. All these antennas encouraging hammering a spike into the ground seems kinda sketch.
sorry for you, but it is not your QRP status that is the problem here... your antenna is big garbage. i have a cheap chinese QRP radio (uSDX+) that TX@1.5W and i make contact all over the world everyday even when the band are at the worst. if you hear plenty of people, but you cannot even make 1QSO it is proof that something is very wrong with your setup.
I had to insert a ferrite into the USB connection cable to the IC-705

Yes, very good point - far from ideal but seemed a comfortable spot at the time. In hindsight, perhaps comfortable but not very effective :)

GET A EFHW FOR 40M/15M AND HAVE THAT INSTALLED ON A REAL DISTANCE FROM YOUR LAPTOP!
