Dipole vs Vertical using SG Antenna's CG-3000 Auto ATU
*** I mistakenly refer to this as an SGC CG-3000 in the video. This is incorrect. The CG-3000 is manufactured by CG Antenna (Shanghai Cang Geng Electro Co. Ltd) - Not SGC ***
This video is both a review of the CG-3000 and a comparison of a vertical vs horizontal dipole.
Signals were comparable between horizontal dipole and vertical (generally marginally lower on vertical) but the main difference was in noise floor (~S3 on vertical, ~S1 on dipole) where a ~9dB difference was observed.

Antennas: Shortened 20m Dipole by Trial and Error
Переглядів 8633 роки тому
Proof that even a loaded dipole can be constructed through simple trial and error; no complicated calculations or construction required. I also appear to have discovered that what I thought was a coincidence 20 years ago, was perhaps not a coincidence at all - but rather a side effect of having a heap of inductance on an electrically short antenna.
How to NOT Work JS8Call Portable
Переглядів 2 тис.3 роки тому
How many things can go wrong in one portable exercise? In fairness, the weather forecast today was poor so I hadn't prepared in advance; this was very much a spur of the moment 'throw things in bag and go' exercise. However:- 1. Batteries were not fully charged, which added SLA weight to backpack. 2. Laptop was not properly configured, which wasted both power and time when portable. 3. Unexpect...

How To Diagnose and Repair an IR Remote Control
Переглядів 4,4 тис.3 роки тому
Not specifically amateur radio related but perhaps still of interest. Most existing 'howto' videos seem to either a) only clean the contacts or b) totally butcher both the cases and the PCBs with little thought regarding actual failure modes or diagnosis. In summary: Check for IR LED illumination (most mobile phone cameras are IR sensitive) Does LED illuminate? Yes - clean key contacts and inve...

The End Fed Dipole; A Contradiction in Terms?
Переглядів 7513 роки тому
An accidental mix-up of terms online led to an interesting discussion about end-fed dipoles. - Is this a contradiction in terms? - How can we end-feed an antenna that is by definition, two elements? - What would an end fed dipole look like? I'm still unsure of the practical benefits of such an arrangement, but here I present: The End Fed Dipole. Do you use such an antenna? If so - what practica...

The Importance of Filters
Переглядів 2523 роки тому
Questions/comments I regularly see online:- 1) I've fitted a filter, it sounds the same. There's no difference! 2) An upgraded filter has increased my noise floor! 3) Are additional filters required for VHF/UHF? Here I present a little background to filters - how they operate, why they're important - and in doing so answer these questions.
IC7300 Configuration for Data Modes (WSJTX, JS8CALL, FLDIGI etc)

A response to continued questions on the online groups regarding configuration of IC7300 for data modes. I forgot to mention that it's also important to ensure the correct sound device is configured for both audio input and output in the software (for example WSJTX) or operating system (if software lacks these options). Some operating systems (for example Windows) also require specific ICOM dri...

We often see comments stating:- - JS8CALL is full of vacant/snoozing operators - It's just automated heartbeats - The mode is dying due to lack of interactive QSOs However, this is really missing the point (and power!) of the mode. Hear I explain why the 24x7 'vacant operator' nodes and heartbeats are essential to the survival of the JS8 network and fundamental to the operation of the more adva...

IC 7300 is crap when it comes to HOT SWITCHING an external amp. ICOM insists there is NO problem which is total rubbish!
817ND with BHI DSP is one of the most understated, underrated QRP in the second hand market, bar none. The versatility of this little gem are appreciated by hams world wide! Couple it with a Tokyo HyPower 45B amp (out of production) and you have a formidable HF rig that is about the size of a hard cover book.
You should save money for a Mercury Lux for the Hermes. I already owned the 7300 and all these Yaesu's then i learned about the Hermes Lite 2 and decided to give it a try and omg I can't go back to the other radios comfortably I'm hooked probably be liquidating most of the knobs !! 73
It's so sad that they're actually people who think that this is a good antenna comparison, what this actually is is a perfect example of subjective personal opinion by someone who does not understand the characteristics of different antennas. AB testing of antennas is about the most worthless way of testing an antenna. You're actually trying to compare a horizontally polarized dipole with a vertically polarized antenna using on the air signals with no idea where they're at. This is really the end result of the dumbing down of amateur radio. I suggest you look up L.B. cebik WRRNL sk and do a bit of studying. Because that's what this is lacking it is lacking a basic understanding of antenna fundamentals. Of course the vertical is going to have a higher noise floor, man-made noises almost always vertically polarized. The one thing you're ignoring is that verticals have a very low angle of radiation. That means that the signals is picking up are very low on the horizon where everything man kind makes is. This is good not bad because for DX what you want is low angle radiation. A vertical antenna is not going to be very good for domestic local Communications on HF because it has a low angle of radiation. For local Communications you want a dipole because it has high angles of radiation. Anyhow I can't believe I'm explaining basic antenna Ferry on a UA-cam video that purportedly demonstrates antenna performance. Do us a favor redo this experiment with a DX station that requires a takeoff angle of somewhere between 10 and 12° and compare the vertical to the dipole on signals arriving at that angle.
I truly appreciate your effort, BUT... Height makes ALL the difference. Get that antenna as HIGH as possible, but ANY antenna in the air is 120 db better than one on the "shelf" not hooked up.hihi 73 K2WW
Try this distro: "Andy KB1OIQ HAM radio Linux" based on Xubuntu. It has EVERYTHING you need for Amateur Radio Linux.
I have an issue like the IR blaster stays on all the time and if a button is pressed the IR turns off...this has happened after a incident of battery leak, and now I'm not able to operate the SONY home theatre DVD. Can anyone shed light on this issue.
Wish I would have seen this when I started. Also, my AGC doesn't have an off option when I toggle.
Thank You for this Info. I am just starting with JS8Call 73 W4DES
Thank you for this video! I am looking on running it on an real Amiga. I got a MFJ TNC modem and an Amiga 1200 with a pistorm. I'm in the process of getting a licence for permanent bbs like operation you gave me even more inspiration to do this on my Amiga! :)
Fantastic vid. You are really good at explaining the whole deal. thx
I am going to have to try that socat trick as it looks handy as all get out. It would probably work for a real TNC hooked up to a real serial port as well. That would be to allow access to a serial port on another machine. 73 de Chris KQ6UP

Hello Steve, may be you can help me to solve a Problem with my IC-7300 using the CG-3000 with the matching Remote Control Box for iCOM...? Here is my Story: Here is a funny Story which is actually not funny. On my IC-7 2 0 0 the CG3000 with the Control Box works fine. On the IC-7300 the Tuner makes energizing Noises but cannot find a Match. And the Green OK Lamp on the Remote Control never flashes because the Tune Proicess does not stopp. I checked all Tuner Settings in the Menu of the IC-7300. I cannot find the Problem. I am sue this has worked before with the IC-7300. when i bought the CG3000 2 Years ago. I was just not using the Combination IC-7300 + CG-3000 CTU for a while. May be you have the Answer what I am doing wrong...? 73 de Your Friend Günter 💯🙋♂
Hi, probably IC-7300 has got buit-in its own antenna box, maybe it's conflicting somehow with CG-3000, try to switch it off with settings in ICOM , maybe it helps, good luck.
Thanks I will be putting up a horizontal dipole this week! You have a beautiful home and lot. I wish I was on a lake! WB9VVH in TN. USA
Great video! Thanks for sharing
I bought an Apache Labs Hermes late 2023 production run and run it with Thetis and a 500 w amp. Head and shoulders above the IC7300. The biggest advantage is the in depth capability of the software frankly and playing around with dozens of settings won't suit everyone. However you have menus and multifunction knobs etc to work with on all modern radios
New to this and was thinking about getting a hermes lite 2+, what kind of amp are you running and how did you set it up?
I have a cheap GoPro knockoff that I’ve removed the IR filter from the sensor. It displays IR signals nice and bright on the lcd display
man.. I wish my noise floor was an S5... Most of the time on all HF bands it's 10-15 over 9. Haven't been able to REALLY test if its coming from my own home or not, despite having turned off the mains breaker in the panel, but that doesn't completely kill everything in my hosue as I've got several UPS devices (which are probably also responsible for noise) on a server rack in my basement, my main tele, office PC, my 3d printer..... UGH. Maybe sometime this winter the power will go out and I'll break out my FT817 before bringing everything back up.
Can you not shut off the UPS's also? They can usually be turned off. I turned mine off when hunting noise.
Not on the google play store
Try running those Mics thru a “Studio V3” preamp.
habe heraus gefunden das die antenne ihre wirkung zeigt wenn man sie auszieht . und dann geht was 73 Tom DG1XT
Thank you for that explanation! I will start to leave my own node up 24/7 as soon as possible. I'm trying to get my family set up in another state. I'm not sure I will be able to reach them directly but it's nice to know that this is an option.
The TX audio on the 7300 is fantastic. I just ordered an HL2, and my plan is TX 7300, RX HL2/Thetis. That should be incredible.
I have a 15 year old laptop from my brother in law given to me for free. I put linux mint on it, got SDR++ and im on my way. Definitely easy to install and get up and running for receiving.
It's possible to do Star with 7300 ?
It's probably the heating system next door. Some sort of faulty circuit. Could be dangerous. His house could catch fire and burn to the ground. You never know. BTW, I know a guy who knows a guy that might could help you out. ua-cam.com/video/ZPtjyqgZAUk/v-deo.html :)
Decided to give Quisk a go after watching, compiled it ok on Debian 12, had trouble getting Cat to work but found Quisk not only sets up 2 virtual digital audio but also a temporary Cat /tmp/QuiskTTY0 Now running WSPR etc from WSJTx 73 VK2NP
Wonderful work. Hope you're well and in good health!! ;-)
Sorry to hear matey. Your videos are hands down the best I have found as a new HAM... I hope you are OK and all is good. 73
Brilliant video matey!! Thankyou 🙂
My friend let me tell you one thing , nothing destroyed hf more than LED lights ! I have no hf signal since 2015 here in my city in Iraq ! I can say RIP hf

very good rambling…makes good sense. i like your antennas. have relatives in the Ålands. 73
That QRM could be coming from either an LED bathroom vanity mirror, or possibly a solar panel installation. I get similar QRM to that on 40, 60 and 80M, and it definitely is an LED bathroom mirror. Obviously a cheap bathroom mirror with the mains filter components missing.
Watched two years after OH3SPN published the video and glad to hear your antenna advice--you have a beautiful garden. 73 from KI7YWO in Tucson, AZ. Get on the air is best advice.
Being new to Js8 I have to say this was the single most complete and informative discussion of the heart beat and its function I have come across. Thank you sir.
Any antenna is better than no antenna.
If you like the Hermes-Lite, you might like the Elad FDM-DUO, which I bought recently, after considering the Icom 7300 for the longest time. I suspect it is still very competitive. I bought a JUMA PA-100D amp to accompany it also. Also, since your video, Yaesu came out with the 710 that sends some vibes around. Hope you will make an update to this video in the future. By the way, the Elad can be run stand alone or run completely on a PC.
I have a 817ND. What a dog crap radio. Do not recommend at all. Too many quirks for it to be usable. It astounds me how many people buy them.
Great radios! 🏆
Thank you. Best wishes from New Zealand.
I ran one of those tuners on a near 10m pole. I helically wound the wire rather than just running it up the side or middle. I also ran random radials all over the place. It was about all I could afford at the time but was great value as I could work all the HF bands. Was also my first experience with HF. I passed the Novice in the 90s we weren't allowed on most of the HF bands back then. So yeah coming back 20 years later and working HF was a magical time for me. John 2E1HEL
sorry for you, but it is not your QRP status that is the problem here... your antenna is big garbage. i have a cheap chinese QRP radio (uSDX+) that TX@1.5W and i make contact all over the world everyday even when the band are at the worst. if you hear plenty of people, but you cannot even make 1QSO it is proof that something is very wrong with your setup.
New mode: Packet IL2P might be interesting for you to play with next :-) Weekend contesters demonstrate poor etiquette behaviour all round on the packet QRGs :-( IL2P is turbo charged RS hardened, and still AFSK300/1200. Its not backwards compatible with AX/FX25. Pop in sometime for a primer. - 73 PE1RRR
Thank you for explaination
Automated? It's not automated. There are a whole series of steps I must take just to send and receive messages through the network. I have to map out the route. This is so frustrating to me. I should be able to send a message to a call sign and have it go through without me having to figure out the route. Perhaps what's missing is system acks? Another problem is that the system is wedded to JS8, which is very slow, unlike fldigi, which supports more than a dozen modes, many of them factors faster than JS8. I wish fldigi supported automatic mesh networking. Where is the system I need?
The dynamic Icom SM-50 microphone with built-in preamp sounds great with the IC-7300.
Thanks for the video and the off topic bits. It’s all good stuff for us newbies. M7MDO
