As a Librarian myself, I really appreciate your comments to the library hater. It’s pretty interesting what people do and don’t associate with environmentalism. I noticed that that person said they’ve been an environmentalist for 30 years so environmentalism’s really changed over time but it’s possible that they’re kind of stuck in their view of environmentalism. Anyway, thank you for defending libraries. We are The one free thing that continues to be available to all kinds of people both physically and virtually. Kudos to you!

Deeply appreciative of you speaking out about the military. It’s so clear how so little people think about context and how much they love to talk instead of understand lol. The library comment sent me lmfao, and all of the “degrees” everyone seems to have 🤣
As someone who absolutely considered themselves an environmentalist and dyes their hair regularly, I just want to say I love the blue hair on you and hope you will keep it for as long as you want it! I think self expression in an aesthetic way is really cool and a huge part of my own identity. Of course there’s a way to do so unsustainably and with a consumerist mindset, but there are totally ways to be intentional about it. (P.s. my personal fav brand of hair dye is Lunar Tides. They are a small women owned brand with an incredible color selection and staying power. Their jars are plastic but it is number 1 PET, so pretty widely recyclable.)

Emma, let me say I am so sorry about my Instagram comment. The "out of sight out of mind" was dumb of me to say and I am truly sorry. As a positive, the whole thing helped me realize the digital footprint and data storage use we all have (probably on a big machine at a tech corp somewhere). And if we all did the small action it would make a big difference, emails included. I was inspired and really went to work on my inbox. Again, I apologize and I have learned from my mistake.

Great video! I worked for THAT famous billionaires company for almost 5 years... I had been vegan for 8 years at that point, already an environmentalist, but still kind of blind to the corporate nature of our destruction. After my time there, I can say definitively, EVs will not save the planet. I watched tons of waste leave our facility every day, just a stepping stone in the path of those vehicles' production. Many coworkers were often placed in dangerous and cancerous conditons. We cannot buy our way to a better environment, that's just not how this works.
This is so interesting to me because, I feel that while we talk a lot about EVs for single family/sometimes single person cars we often miss the bigger picture for including more public/shared transportation/walkable areas. That being said while EVS will not save the planet, the evidence still points to driving an EV car to be better than a gasoline one. (Source EPA.GOV)

Wow, that library comment stream was epic. Someone had a bad experience in a library, lol. I love libraries! When I was raising my kids, we were so poor we couldn't afford many amenities so libraries gave us free movie nights. And before streaming music services were available, was a great source of cd's to listen to music. And the golf comment, sounds like he touched too much golf course chemical laden grass.
As a middle schooler who didn't want to shell out $10-$15 each for CD's, I would borrow albums from the library, copy the tracks to my family's computer, then add them to my MP3 player. I think I even burned some of the albums to blank discs so I could play them on my CD player. (This would have been ~2011-2013, so after digital music got popular but before streaming took off). I was so proud of myself at the time for figuring out such a huge life hack. Still kind of am tbh. The only annoying part was that some of the albums were the censored versions, but that was kinda whatever.

So those videos I think are totally necessary and we totallllllly need more of them.

The library comment REALLY made me roll my eyes. I don't get to the library very often but do you know what gets me going there?? the 3D print service they have! i've replaced so many little knobs and dials with 3D printed ones when they break because the alternative time and time again has been to just rebuy the whole, otherwise functioning, thing. $1 per 30 minutes of print time to recoup filament costs, and since I have to pick the thing up in person I get to shop for a new book or movie while I'm there.
The library hater is utterly mindboggling! I can't understand why they took that approach with you. Just odd. I totally agree with you in the importance of highlighting these sorts of comments to prevent people from becoming discouraged. The narrative that unless someone is eco-perfect in everything they do, they are just a hypocrite who can safely be ignored, is quite a common one in the offline world not just the online one and really needs to be challenged. I think what fuels that argument is on some level guilt, guilt that they know they aren't doing as much as they feel they should, so it bothers them when they see people who are making an effort to live in a more sustainable and ecological way, so then their response is to discredit those making an effort, as being hypocritical, that way they can ignore them and no longer feel that pang of guilt that they aren't doing what they sort of feel they should be.

I’m currently fascinated by the “smelly hippie” hate. I had been trying natural deodorants on and off for years with no success-I just sweat straight through my clothes and thought I needed an antiperspirant. A few months ago, I decided to try again. Immediate failure, but I decided to give it a little time. It started working, and then stopped again-and then I made the connection. Whenever I shaved my armpits, my sweatiness got worse/smellier/more noticeable. I’ve stopped shaving and now use natural deodorant with no problems, and actually get way more “ooh, you smell great, what is that?” comments. The smelly hippie trope has become interesting to me because I think in many cases, we’re being sold both the problem and the solution by corporations, and the only way for corporations to protect profits is to pretend the problem is inherent-people who don’t buy their products must smell, because their product prevents smell. They create this in-group out-group dynamic to reinforce the need for their products, and hate you receive about being “smelly” is really about trying to shame you back into this corporation created in-group, not about smell at all.
People need to chill about her blue hair once and for all 😭 like she said, environmentalism isn’t about being perfect at all. In fact it’s better and more impactful to have a lot of imperfect environmentalists rather than just a few perfect ones. That being said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing hobbies you love (even if not eco friendly) while doing better in other aspects of your life. That’s the beauty of imperfection and simplicity that showcase the true intentions of the zero-waste movement, and its the small and collective actions add up!
You’re doing amazing work. No one is perfect, why does that word even exist! It’s heartbreaking to see how hateful people are online, just like in traffic, hiding away behind a shield. I just try to convince myself there’s more intrinsic good than bad in people 😔
I, too, am flabbergasted by the library-hater. 😲Moving along...I compost my kitchen waste (I'm a gardener). so the bulk of the trash is unavoidable food packaging and junk mail. Any suggestions to minimize/eliminate either of those waste streams. My garden is a whopping 12' x 10', so while I can supplement my food supply, I can't entirely wean myself off the grocery store! Any tips will help.
Here is my eco grocery video, hopefully this helps! ua-cam.com/video/GBHuv9cXGr4/v-deo.html As for junk mail, I think there are some services you can try to unsubscribe from them...try this :) consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-stop-junk-mail
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist Thank you! BTW - I think blue hair is super-cute with brown eyes, J'adore! But more fundamentally, if we are required to become all-natty,, orthopaedic shoe wearing, organic hippies to save the planet - Earth is doomed. Businessmen can choose to instigate intelligent waste management and recycling in small Main Street businesses. Sleek condo-living big-city lady lawyers can choose all-natural fabrics, a microplastics filter on the washing machine, and earth-friendly cosmetics. Billionnaires can (and have) donated millions of acres to the public land trust to establish wild life sanctuaries. Good grief, we need people of every stripe and persuasion to reach the tipping point and save the planet! (Maybe an idea for a future video?) Thanks again - very helpful.
To the best of my knowledge there is no perfect environmentalist out there. I've been dying my hair for over 30 years, buy things in plastic, I'm not vegetarian/vegan, and purchase from Amazon. I do my best to offset many of these choices by buying in bulk, buying second hand, eating plant based, and using terracycle when i can. Until there is systemic change, none of us are going to be perfect with our choices all of the time.
Libraries. Omg. They're the ABSOLUTE BEST. I adore my library, just everything about it. It has a seed library, screens free movies, hosts conversations with local authors and supports writing groups. During the WA Tree Festival*, they held a yoga session outside underneath the huge oak tree, and they have poetry evenings and book launches and also provide free information evenings/afternoons on everything from making a will to knowing your rights as a renter to navigating social media for seniors. There are so many things the library does and they're such an important third space for everyone (even those people who don't think they need it or never want to use it) *Yes, my state has a tree festival every year, which is honestly so amazing. We do a lot of things wrong in terms of the environment (hello, massive dependency on mining and a fairly cosy and uncritical relationship between said miners and the government) but we have a month every year where we celebrate trees and I love it
I live in Washington State near the border of Oregon, where the mighty Columbia River serves as the East-west border of these states. If you were to go on a drive along the Columbia River… you would see MASSIVE MASSIVE buildings that are built for cloud storage. The ‘cloud’ isn’t a fairy village in the sky…it is huge computing/ digital storage facilities. These buildings are located along the river for two good reasons. We have cheap power. The river water can be used for cooling these huge systems. Out- of-sight out-of-mind as far as digital content is denial. Also related: crypto currency, especially ‘bitcoin mining’ use incredible amounts of energy. Ditto for NTF’s. I don’t think we ever really think about these things because it is invisible to us.
ohhh I imagine that's popular up there due to the big tech presence and the abundance of water. Wild! I just filmed a video about AI where I talk about this topic. It's wild!
10:00 they are also just wrong. For example: Having a shared printer is better for the environment. Like instead of let's say 100 people all buying their own, then in a few years throwing away, and buying a new printer. And even if the majority recycle their old printers that's still a lot of waste. *Versus One central printer,* that you just use when you need it.
Yes. In addition to that, it's not always about being able to afford a printer. I could, and I have one, but I don't remember the last time I needed it. And I should check if it's still supported because it's a Laserjet from the 1990s 😂🎉🎉
I love that you’re out here making content on sustainability and environmentalism! Thank you for continuing your work because it’s necessary. It’s past due that people started to change their lifestyle to be more sustainable buts a movement that’s growing .
I love your videos and really appreciate your humor and the way you share actions that are implementable! I've been watching your videos since you lived in Japan, I love your current hair and think it looks awesome! Had to share that I smiled and was so happy to see your first segment be about deleting (and unsubbing from) unnecessary emails, right before I played this vid I spent about 10 minutes deleting too many marketing emails. Thank you for reminding us that it all matters!
When I first became an environmentalist, I was working for a defense contractor (first job outside of college). I didn’t know any better at the time, I had to learn and grow and then find an exit plan when I realized my job wasn’t aligned with my values. I often wonder if people discredit me because of this - but we all learn and grown and change throughout life. It’s weird when people don’t acknowledge this. Thanks for sharing!
precisely! It's unfair to expect everyone to know everything. It's okay to take time to learn. There's such a stigma too around changing your mind, but it's okay to change your mind!
For the record, Your videos make other people better at realizing what they’re doing wrong, But sometimes those people get mad because they’re being corrected, And they unfortunately have really big egos- when their balloon gets popped they’re like the little kid screaming at the circus- you get the point. (Also, with this, it’s better to not be political on this platform.) Also, men are weird. About libraries… 9:00 Why, thank you! I *do* live within walking distance to a library! In fact, I’ll go tomorrow. (She’s jealous)
Don’t be embarrassed of being in the military. Thank you for your service 🙏🏼 It’s very brave to be in a space that doesn’t align with your values and still practice and hold them. I know you inspired some people during your service just like you inspire us!
thank you!! it's a rough thing to tackle in my mind. I sympathize with veterans who came back from the Viet Nam war. Not nearly to that level, but they were HATED by the public. Of course, being a part of that system is not good but I was not the problem as a bottom tier worker. The broader problem is the military as a whole and its leaders. I am glad to have learned about it and don't regret it...but it does make me feel icky sometimes
I absolutely LOVE your channel, and I'm so very thankful for all the helpful information you share! Your videos are relevant, and doable, which I appreciate. 🥰 I would love to see a video on all your tattoos! I love your nature ones on your arm. 💕☺️ Thanks for all you do! This video was funny; thanks for not taking any of those comments seriously.
Don't let the haters get you down or make you quit. If they don't want to hear the message regarding sustainability and environmentalism, they should just not watch the videos. I love your content and would hate for you to stop posting because trolls think they can bully others because no one knows who they are. Love your replies to their nasty messages :-) Wishing you the best!
Please do a favourite video every year with hate comments, _as long as you have the energy._ EDIT: libraries and librarians are worth gold, diamonds and tax money.
Hii, not necessarily relevant to the video. But I have been looking into composting to be more environmentally friendly, but I live in a flat so I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to how I would go about composting.
I will never understand the concept of a library hater. How can you hate something that is inherently good. As a very broke college student libraries were my saving grace! Any book I needed for school I would try to source it in the library and many of the times it worked! Also, I found it funny how you said many people can't afford a printer because it's that pesky ink that is so expensive. 😂 You are so right libraries aren't just for books they are a meeting place for friends, tutoring peers, and finding resources in the community! Libraries are a win and that person is not.
The hair comments... weird. Mine is dyed brown... I probably wouldn't get the same comment but I don't think different colours of dye have a vastly different impact? You look awesome in blue and purple. I think it's insecurity... people might feel like they're not doing enough themselves and don't like feeling bad about it, so if they see the least little thing that is not eco friendly they try and bring you down to "their level" as though there's no real difference - but there is. I don't see many genuine eco conscious people doing that - at least not the evidence based science oriented ones (there are always a few 'ban plastics/toxics' people... I tend to not get on well with them as they're often unnecessarily alarmist in a way not supported by scientific evidence). If your whole life is eco conscious, the little waste you generate with your few "wasteful things I still do" doesn't make a big impact. I colour my hair brown - went grey 20 years ago in my early 20s and I'm not ready to look heaps older yet :) I LOVE brightly coloured and glittery eye shadow (mention that you like any kind of glitter and the eco community jumps on you :P)... thing is, I probably don't get through 0.5 grams a year of it... meanwhile, they're flying overseas on holidays, buying junk on Shein and Temu, and have an absolutely enormous carbon footprint. Gittemary likes nail polish :) It's fine. If we are already doing loads, we are allowed to have little "vices" we love. Life without art and personality is boring :) People are weird. Know what is and isn't in your control. Make conscious choices when you can, stay evidence based, do it in a way you love and can maintain - that's all that's needed :)
right! no one can tell when someone dyes their hair a natural color, mine is just very obvious it's dyed but so many of my eco friends have dyed hair! People are for sure insecure and feel guilty so they want someone to take it out on unfortunately
Honestly forget about people's hate messages. I myself have made allot of sustainable swaps, but I hate to cook so pretty much all my food has plastic packaging. I don't really like it, but I recycle what I can. Sure, that might make me a bad environmentalist, but I do use allot sustainable things and I pick up trash whenever I see it. That's what I am willing to do. I'm not perfect, but at least I'm going something. The same goes for you.

They create this in-group out-group dynamic to reinforce the need for their products, and hate you receive about being “smelly” is really about trying to shame you back into this corporation created in-group, not about smell at all.
haha you're so right!
That’s the beauty of imperfection and simplicity that showcase the true intentions of the zero-waste movement, and its the small and collective actions add up!
yes! I may dye my hair but I take many steps in other areas of my life to be MORE eco!
You’re doing amazing work. No one is perfect, why does that word even exist! It’s heartbreaking to see how hateful people are online, just like in traffic, hiding away behind a shield. I just try to convince myself there’s more intrinsic good than bad in people 😔
yes!! there is simply no need to be mean in this world!
Here is my eco grocery video, hopefully this helps! ua-cam.com/video/GBHuv9cXGr4/v-deo.html
As for junk mail, I think there are some services you can try to unsubscribe from them...try this :) consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-stop-junk-mail
Until there is systemic change, none of us are going to be perfect with our choices all of the time.
so true! no one is perfect and it's so weird that some viewers hold the movement to that standard...
Libraries. There are so many things the library does and they're such an important third space for everyone (even those people who don't think they need it or never want to use it)
*Yes, my state has a tree festival every year, which is honestly so amazing. We do a lot of things wrong in terms of the environment (hello, massive dependency on mining and a fairly cosy and uncritical relationship between said miners and the government) but we have a month every year where we celebrate trees and I love it
THE BEST!!
I live hate comments, because it’s always people that aren’t actually doing anything themselves
ugh right!
It's wild!
Thank you for your service to the country AND the planet!!
thanks!
YES!! It's wild that someone who is an "environmentalist for 30 years" suggests we all need our own brand new tech. Wild claim
precisely! And I could afford one but I simply don't have space for a device I would use twice a year!
@@TheSimpleEnvironmentalist I think it's a general problem to notice that sometimes, something is not for you (or me) but still works in some cases.
@@jochenkraus7016 for sure!
I love that you’re out here making content on sustainability and environmentalism! Thank you for continuing your work because it’s necessary. It’s past due that people started to change their lifestyle to be more sustainable buts a movement that’s growing .
thanks for being here!
Thank you for reminding us that it all matters!
woohoo! love that :)
You are definitely one of my favorite environmentalists! Keep making awesome fun content! 😊 The world needs more people like you!
aww thanks so much!
For the record,
Your videos make other people better at realizing what they’re doing wrong,
But sometimes those people get mad because they’re being corrected,
And they unfortunately have really big egos- when their balloon gets popped they’re like the little kid screaming at the circus- you get the point.
(Also, with this, it’s better to not be political on this platform.)
Also, men are weird.
About libraries… 9:00
Why, thank you! I *do* live within walking distance to a library! In fact, I’ll go tomorrow.
(She’s jealous)
you're so right!
Love the blue hair! The idea someone has to be perfect to have something to say - that’s ridiculous.
hey thanks! Right? weird that people who are imperfect hold me to a perfect standard
I would love to hear more about the military
two videos on it already on the channel!
I don’t like when people overuse the word “slander”. Like…. That word has a definition and people use it wrong who use it
are you saying I used it wrong? I'm confused...I'm quite confident in the definition personally! but perhaps one of the comments said it?
Thank you for all you do emma, every time I see rude comments I get so annoyed. I've got to learn to be more like you!
thank you so so much for your continued kindness :)
This video was funny; thanks for not taking any of those comments seriously.
thank you so much!! Maybe I'll make a tattoo tour soon :)
Don't let the haters get you down or make you quit. If they don't want to hear the message regarding sustainability and environmentalism, they should just not watch the videos. I love your content and would hate for you to stop posting because trolls think they can bully others because no one knows who they are. Love your replies to their nasty messages :-) Wishing you the best!
as I said, I don't take what they say to heart :) thanks for the support!
Please do a favourite video every year with hate comments, _as long as you have the energy._
EDIT: libraries and librarians are worth gold, diamonds and tax money.
omg yes!! I should highlight the love, too :) lemme see what I can do!
Why do people feel they have to comment! Move on! They are miserable people! Oh and I love libraries and the Libby app.
right!
Sending positive vibes, thank you for what you do 😊
thank you so much!
You put more thought into all of these nitpicks than the majority of your haters probably ever have in their life.
i knowwww hahaha I think way too much hahaha
You and your channel have greatly inspired me ❤ Thank you for sharing
thank you so much!
Hii, not necessarily relevant to the video. But I have been looking into composting to be more environmentally friendly, but I live in a flat so I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to how I would go about composting.
No worries! Here is my beginner composting video, I hope it helps :) ua-cam.com/video/rDz2F4xQ18U/v-deo.html
Love the sweatshirt! What brand is it?
I wish I knew, I thrifted it!
Libraries are a win and that person is not.
right! it's one thing to be like "yeah doesn't work for me" and another to go on a dull tirade about them!
*full lol
Perfect is the enemy of good.
PRECISELY
🤘✌️ Luv n respect , Hwyl, Taffy Nige 🫶🏴
thanks!
Life without art and personality is boring :)
People are weird.
You honestly rock the blue hair. It has been looking so good on you~
So many “keyboard warriors “ Emma. Most of us are under the “system” and therefore have to adapt cause of it. Progress not perfection. ❤ take CaRe
yes thank you!
" Went to school for sustainability"? What does that even mean LOL! You should put all hater comments into a book. They are hilarious!
hahaha i should!
did they graduate that school???
Honestly forget about people's hate messages. I myself have made allot of sustainable swaps, but I hate to cook so pretty much all my food has plastic packaging. I don't really like it, but I recycle what I can. Sure, that might make me a bad environmentalist, but I do use allot sustainable things and I pick up trash whenever I see it. That's what I am willing to do. I'm not perfect, but at least I'm going something. The same goes for you.
YES!! At least we're trying!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
thank you!
P.S: I HATE golf!! Hwyl, Taffy Nige 🤘
it's the work!
worst haha
😂 these are so beyond. You should tell some of these people to please unfollow you.
I do! I let them know that if they're unhappy here they do not have to take it out on me, just simply scroll away!
