Your idea at the end of the video of looping the cable and putting a bit of heatshrink on it and around the connector is fantastic. Ive just done it and the whole assembly feels a lot more beefy, I salute you good sir.
Just a heads up everyone, avoid the headache of doing what he did to take that plastic piece over the rectangle. I tried for quite a while and it was stuck on. you can just pry open the white square charger housing where all the cords run to. You can get the cord for around $3 on ebay including shipping. I had a charger stop working on me and got a new one (a few years ago) and same thing. except I kept both chargers. I have been becoming a DIY kind of person the last two years and as the second charger began to have this issue I was looking how to fix it. Just buying the cords and soldering the wires together then heat shrinking as the square box was probably a time saver and less of a headache. Still sucked if you are new to soldering like I was, but definitely easier than this. i do appreciate this guy taking the time out to show us how he did it, but I think this was is better that I mentioned.
managed it eventually, it was welded firmly in though. I mashed up all of the white surround to the pins too. BUT it works, so thanks for this helpful and informative video. You might just have saved many people a lot of money and the needless waste of the worlds resources.
yessss this worked for my my kneedles where pushed in guess over time and constant moving , but i took off that silver piece ! took off the little plastic piece with the holes thats in the silver piece and put the silver piece back for magnetic support since the kneedles dont have that plastic piece to support it no more and walla it worked my hearted jumped havnt got to use this laptop in months cause of that problem THANK YOU MAN !
Thanks for the video! My charger lasted a year and a half and I am not paying a new one with these prices. At least not before I try everything else possible.
if you guys are having problems with the light not turning on at all, I've had this problem as well. what i did was unplugged the cord from the wall outlet for 2 days ( i just forgot about it for 2 days.. might not take as long ) and plugged it back in and it worked..
Wish I watched this before dissecting the aluminum barrel with my dremmel! Haha But it was a kind of an emergency situation to get mr macky powered up so any unshorted port in a storm! ;) I mainly needed to double check my polarity as the wire was already pulled out of the end. I did notice one contact had the fibers from the inner cord sticking out so was gonna go with that as pos. Hate to find out hard way I was wrong without a quick youtube visit. Haha Thanks for the vid!
Hello I ended up chopping about 2 inches of cable off, so as to get into undamaged cable, I then carefully striped off the outer plastic sheath for about 1 inch. Then you can see the outer wire screen which you then have to tease out without breaking the strands and then twist them together on one side of the inner cable. You have to tin that with solder being careful not to overheat and melt the inner wire's insulation. Then copy the video, all the best. Hope you do it ok.
Totally agree. Trillion $$$ company, with high school level product design engineers !!! Extremely bad engineering. Fire all involved in allowing crap component in trillion $$$$$ company..
I agree, these macs are not cheap, we deserve a more long lasting design. The new ones out as of Nov 2012 look just as fragile. I guess we all have to be very careful with the power adapter and unplug it from the laptop by holding the plug its self. It is not easy if you have a young child or pet who yank it out. Also now mac have dropped internal CD drives and dropped the 17" MBP it seems to make them less desirable to me.
Polarity : With the prongs facing you the right connection is the inner most wire. The left connection is the wire wrapped around the other that resembles shielding. That is on a 60W charger. Be careful separating the head of the charger. Remove the magnet ring with pliers. It will need to be glued back in. The plastic is soft use an X-acto knife and take your time. Start on the sides and then move to the tip. Don't push it too far in or you will strike the PCB.
Drayton Kittel thanks for explaining polarity. I did got of the magnet but sadly the main kept stuck. When trying to pop it out with tweezers I took of the led I think :) apple crappie cable annoyance
One of the leds with the controller on it broke off when trying to get it out. I did check a different video and they where pulling it out from the side, which is bad cause the leds are there. Do you know if it will give power to the mac if the led, middle pin doesnt work?
My battery DIED after that fluctuating light situation. Now it is poking me to get it to the service... Nice video. By the way you could use transparent shrinking pipe.
Blimey your lucky. I had this exact same problem but the mag safe connector on mine did not come apart in the same way. To be fair the connector just fell straight off after making a clean break on the inside aluminium. i couldn't push it through like you did and i was really surprised to see how you dismantled it coz mine was solid as a rock. No amount of pushing or pulling is going to get the rest of the insides out of mine. Wish i could have done this coz now i have an old white connector.
I assume you are talking about the small gold pins in the magsafe. They are very delicate and I think have a spring inside. Sometimes they can get jammed and get stuck, you could try a switch cleaning lubricant or even a drop of WD40 on each pin and gently push each one with matchstick to see if each pin goes in and out OK.
I would get some self amalgamating rubber tape, it is like insulation tape but it is not sticky and when stretched and wrapped around the cable will fuse its self together to form one piece of rubber. hope this helps.
Thanks...With this video I knew that the problem is the magsafe, I was thinking that my problem is the battery...thanks for your help...but I think that some steps in your video doesn't appear and that are necessary if I want to repair my Magsafe.
do you strip the wire back so you have better access to the 2 separate wires in the cable? thanks for the video im going to try this when i get home and can use proper tools
thanks a lot. i managed to successfully re-solder the 2 wires and i tested it out but the power isnt hot enough to charge my computer, the lights turn on but theyre not that bright and my computer wont turn back on yet
the ground braided conductor brakes i open the body of the charger a rewired it nice video you cut it open nicely….to reveal what i said.. mine was at the charger
Hello it was very difficult to video and do at the same time. You have to carefully grip the magsafe with a pair of pliers or similar with a piece of paper to protect the metal sandwiched in between. Be sure to grip the outer parts of the magsafe so as not to squash it in the middle. Now with the magsafe gripped firmly use pair of pincers or wire cutters and position between the metal tube and the magsafe and gently pry apart. Remember to protect the metal with paper where the pincers touch.
Ni siquiera he logrado sacar el cable del cilindro, la pieza metalica salió facilmente, pero la pieza blanca con los pines al parecer tiene bastante pegamento.
i had one of these adapters, it sucked. it lasted about 5 months and the cables broke right where you said it would. Not to mention that the design blocks off the ethernet port. the T model ones are better but still crap.
My outer wire screen has been completely dismembered ( ear the power brick) and the inner cable (the white inner cable) is beginning to break. Is it possible to completely cut off 2-3inches of the frayed wires and then use the 'good' wires further down to solder the two pieces together?
This might be too difficult for a non-skilled ordinary person. There is a product called ''Quickfix DC Plugs''. The product works like a replacement dc connector and no soldering is required at all. Technically very simple, easy and just takes 2 mints to fix the dc cord. The kit available for all brand computers in different plug sizes included Apple MagSafe. There is also a video on you tube if u search the name and there will be link of their e-shop in case u wanted to buy.
I really hope I don't have this problem, even though it's on a desk, my brother SOMEHOW repeatedly trips over the charger almost on a daily basis and the metal tips are bent almost to the point where I can't even fit them in the outlet any more.
how would you fix the little metal heads? my problem is that my commuter won't charge and i looked it over, and it seems the problem is the metal heads are not connecting
I totally agree. But since the power brick is not a serviceable part, it will never happen. I was disappointed that I could not find the proper cord, and that I probably would have to spend around $150 on a new power brick (yes, its that expensive around here), so I decided I'll give a shot and send an e-mail to Tim Cook (yes, I know...). And you know what? An Apple employee replyed, called me and is working on it to get a replacement for me. Let's see what happens.
The biggest issue I have is the fragility of the rubber around the wire itself. Every apple cable I have disintegrates within a year or two. Why is that? I've been putting tape on the thing as a temporary fix. Don't know what else to do. Heat shrink tubing won't fit around the tip.
My problem is that the charger gets connected and shows green light only and not the red light which actually says it's charging....could you please help me here...!
@MrCoolArtizan I have to buy that same heat shrink tube. Can you tell me what size it was and what the shrink ratio was? I need both sizes if you can. Please let me know ASAP so I can repair my power cord too. Thanks
my charger is only 6 months old and its decided to stop charging the macbook :( i get no light come on the charger even when moving the wires , what could be wrong with it ??? my old charger is still kind of working so i know its not macbook problem
I have a lot of open parts on my cable, where you can see the shield. So i tryed to get an meter of heatsink on it, but the end is to thick. So i have to get the Cap off and desolder it. But i cant get this cap off... any advise how you get this thing off finaly?
The black cover he used is called heat shrink tubing and it is available in various sizes at any decent electronics supply store. Radio shack and harbor freight even carry it. Good luck with your repair..
Can someone please help me out? I got a macbook pro 13 inches A1278 but it won't come up or charge. It all happen while I was trying to charge it and it blow
Fantastic DIY spirit, however he makes it look easy pulling/prying the white plastic pin holder within the barrel. Don't do it, pushing it will do nothing...you will mangle the barrel, mine was glued in and I trashed it. Buy the whole L-cord, and solder that, unless of course you can handle buying the entire apparatus.
Apple should do these as spares, maybe if enough of us complain about these, they will. For now all we can do is fix or buy a whole power supply. If the plug is OK and its just the wire your looking for try searching for single core screened cable. I have found - rs-online dot c o m /web/p/single-core-microphone-cable/0513294/ - it should do the job although it is microphone cable. The outer diameter needs to be about 3.6mm. Hope this helps.
Your idea at the end of the video of looping the cable and putting a bit of heatshrink on it and around the connector is fantastic. Ive just done it and the whole assembly feels a lot more beefy, I salute you good sir.
I wobbled my magnet out with pliers.
Thanks for being the one to let me know how it comes out. Fixed the wiring inside and it works again!
Worked fine until the wires frayed loose. Would need to re solder them to get it to work again. Flimsy design by apple.
You saved a struggling student, thank you so much
Thanks for this video. It gave me the idea to simply press and hold the magsafe onto the charging port to get the charging started.
Thank you sir for this great repair guide. After watching your video I was able to successfully repair my girlfriend's charger.

Perfect, easy fix, thanks for the vid!. Glad someone decided to take the chance and break apart to see if it can be re-assembled.
Had the same problem, followed your instructions and works like a charm.
This video inspired me to simply scratch the surface of the connectors lightly and that was actually the problem for me!
yessss this worked for my my kneedles where pushed in guess over time and constant moving , but i took off that silver piece ! took off the little plastic piece with the holes thats in the silver piece and put the silver piece back for magnetic support since the kneedles dont have that plastic piece to support it no more and walla it worked my hearted jumped havnt got to use this laptop in months cause of that problem THANK YOU MAN !
Great informational. Who ever decides to do it, be careful.
thanks for the helpful video, i had my charger fixed immediately.
Agreed, in my case as well, it was not pull or bending metal fatigue, but rather twisting, that caused the wire to eventually break and just fall off.
Thanks for the video! My charger lasted a year and a half and I am not paying a new one with these prices. At least not before I try everything else possible.
this is just awesome.. i tried the first cable moving part and it worked.. thank you MrCoolArtizan... u just saved my few thousands.. :)
Aha, I just posted this same question in the thread right above. Didn't notice you had already answered. Thank you.
Thanks for uploading. Simple fix (once I saw how you got the connector apart).
if you guys are having problems with the light not turning on at all, I've had this problem as well. what i did was unplugged the cord from the wall outlet for 2 days ( i just forgot about it for 2 days.. might not take as long ) and plugged it back in and it worked..

GRACIAS LOS CONSEJOS ME HAN SIDOS MUY UTIL ESTOY INICIANDO UNA TIENDA DE FUENTES Y CARGADORES VENTAS Y REPARACIONES.
SHAME ON APPLE FOR NOT FIXING THESE CRAPPY CABLES - They ALL fray and crack and they have done nothing about it.
thats Apple business model to buy new one.. capitalism at its best
Apple is trash asf
great video. Can you demo on how to separate the magnetic connector with pins and the round cover...that itself is very difficult for me.
People that can work with their hands are inspiring, but I wouldn't have the patience. I would have to buy a new cable.
Thanks for this vid, I don't have a soldering iron so I honk I'll just buy a new oem adapter

Tks so much!

damn... you didn't even show how you removed the magsafe pins out of the slot...smh
Thanks for the video, I just saved some $.
the ground braided conductor brakes i open the body of the charger a rewired it
nice video you cut it open nicely….to reveal what i said.. mine was at the charger
It works Thank you so much you saved my $100
Thank you so much dude! You helped me alot
Great guide! Thank you very much)
I have the same problem and I'm looking for to replace the hole cord, but I'm having a hard time finding a genuine one that is shipped overseas.
Hello it was very difficult to video and do at the same time.
You have to carefully grip the magsafe with a pair of pliers or similar with a piece of paper to protect the metal sandwiched in between. Be sure to grip the outer parts of the magsafe so as not to squash it in the middle.

gracias por la explicacion he podido repara el mio sin problema
gracias nuevamente
Ni siquiera he logrado sacar el cable del cilindro, la pieza metalica salió facilmente, pero la pieza blanca con los pines al parecer tiene bastante pegamento.
I have to fix the L type Mag safe connector wire has come out of the connector. I will now try the local skill to repair the same.
Nice job!

How did you split the cable. I hardly can see 2 cables in there
thank you for the video, but I think the hardest parts are not showed!!, how to remove the conector before welding it?
I could’t loosen it with pliers. Then I’ve fastened the blocky part in a vice and pried loosen the cylindric part easily.
The biggest issue I have is the fragility of the rubber around the wire itself. Every apple cable I have disintegrates within a year or two. Why is that? I've been putting tape on the thing as a temporary fix. Don't know what else to do. Heat shrink tubing won't fit around the tip.

my old charger is still kind of working so i know its not macbook problem
Really helpful!
i have one question ... can u tell me the Watts of the electric soldering gun that u use??
thanks!!
why don't have step disassemble of two element (casing and connector ) ?
im been legit here at around 1 minute into this video my charger fixed its self omg
great video
Hi my 5th pin of connector is little bit go inside how can I fix this
Unless apple have changed the way they make these, the white bit should prize out with a small screwdriver while pushing the cable through the hole.
I have a lot of open parts on my cable, where you can see the shield. So i tryed to get an meter of heatsink on it, but the end is to thick. So i have to get the Cap off and desolder it. But i cant get this cap off... any advise how you get this thing off finaly?
Nice work !!
Thank you ::)
How did you open.
@MrCoolArtizan could you tell me the cable polarity?
Is the screen cable really the negative pole?
Thank you so much for share!
It's called "Cold-Worked"...when the wire breaks inside the the outer coating...
OMG THANK YOU IT WORKED
Good and proper example of a british tinkerer. :)
where did you get the black sleeve cover???
The black cover he used is called heat shrink tubing and it is available in various sizes at any decent electronics supply store. Radio shack and harbor freight even carry it. Good luck with your repair..
hello, how removed the magnetic part of the metal?
how come ur magsafer cable turned into gold cable ?
Good job
Can someone please help me out? I got a macbook pro 13 inches A1278 but it won't come up or charge. It all happen while I was trying to charge it and it blow
It is not a good video.
All the most important steps are not filmed ! ! !
It has a short. I've had too many shorts In chargers don't pull hard put it in safe places also
Fantastic DIY spirit, however he makes it look easy pulling/prying the white plastic pin holder within the barrel. The problem I am having is that the little magnetic bit keeps coming away from the cable and staying on the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix that? :(
It didn't work for me :{ When I tried to pul the magnetic thingy out of that tub - the whole thing fell apart...
good brother
i just got a pencil/pen or something small enough to poke the pins, it worked for a while then i had to send my charger to repairs :P
Mine barely lights up green and just flashes yellow
Thank you so much!!!!
Mine is a Late 2011 and does it.
I FREAKING LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You missed one important step. You didnt film taking the magnet part out???
Good job !! thanks. I love your English pronunciation. From where are you?
The magnet to the charger got stuck to the MacBook can someone please help?
thanks, i have repaired
