The audiotrack version. The voice actor is kind of annoying with her portrayal. She speaks in chopped sentences and high and low tones that sound out of place. Like they chopped together each word and it was coming from a robot

The Outsider was a good book. Read it liked it. Stephen King is the greatest American writer of the last 60-70 years. Yes he gets a little graphic with his descriptions yes he overwrites certain aspects and tends to really stress descriptive backgrounds/characters. His endings are normally a let down to readers because that is his view on life. The journey is more important than the destination in his opinion. His “monsters” and story arcs are unparalleled in my opinion. If you want a good quick story read Dean Koontz. If you want an experience read Stephen King. He said the reason his monsters die so easily is because the hard part in life isn’t usually doing something. The hard part is building the courage to act. Which is what imo Stephen King is so great at. Giving us an average flawed human and making us believe they found the courage to confront “evil”

We need more endings like The Running Man. A good solid, "Wow I loved that ending" ending. Sometimes it seems like he just doesn't know how to end a story but knows he has to so he wings it.

This was my first Stephen King book. There’s a certain part that was spoiled for me online, and that kinda sucked, but other than that, liked the building tension throughout the story.
And yeah, the ending was pretty anti-climactic in my opinion.

It is an all-time favorite and, having just read The Outsider last month, it's definitely competing for the slot of favorite Stephen King. I got strong It vibes from the story, but I thought the book was maybe better done, given all the practice King has had since publishing It. I also really enjoyed Gerald's Game by King, if you haven't read that one yet. I'm fairly new to Stephen King as well, and I've only read half a dozen or so of his books, but I'm enjoying his work a lot.

  • @Akemaste
    @Akemaste 5 років тому +16

I was tempted to get the Outsider (mostly because of that amazing cover) But I've gotten mired in two too many of his books. My biggest issue with King is that he gives waaay too much information. Backstory for main characters is great. Sidecharacters. Sure. But do we really need their ENTIRE life's arc? Especially at the cost of pausing plot progression each time. It gets tedious. VERY tedious. This coupled with his fondness for a wide array of (imo) tonally similar characters is why I probably won't buy another book till I finish The Stand. That said, Salem's Lot was fantastic and scared the daylight out of me when I read it a year or two back. Skeleton Crew also has some standout stories (like the raft). When he does scary, he does it masterfully.

    • @pieboi100
      @pieboi100 4 роки тому

I can agree with this to an extent. Salems Lot was my first, and I remember the first time I tried to read it I thought the same way. At first it seemed like there was so much backstory and character development and I just wanted to hop into the scary parts. Put it down before even getting a quarter through it. When I picked it up and read it again I really appreciated the character development. It made the names hard to forget as I was reading through the book, and actually made me care about everyone. Thats actually become the main reason I like Kings books now, the way he describes and outlines all his characters, while it can be tedious, just helps me appreciate them more in the long run

Just finished that audiobook myself and really liked it. It was great to see him bring back the psuedo-detective from the "Mr. Mercedes" books. Those ones are worth checking out, but I would really reccomend "Desperation". It's in my top 3 of his works for sure and he also used the same characters, or at least their names, in a parallel universe for Bachman's "The Regulators".
But definitely check out "Desperation" its worth a credit on audible and King narrates it himself too, which I always like the ones he does.

It is definitely pretty good. I was quite engrossed until three quarters of the way through, and then the tension really started to fall. The supernatural part to the story somehow didn't really have the same grip as the more human element. It was hard to have the same connection to the characters once certain parts of the plot were resolved - and that was fairly early on. I wouldn't call this horror I must say. It was more a crime novel with a paranormal theme towards the end. Personally the fantastic/supernatural ideas didn't work for me.

I’m kind of confused about something
    (Involving spoilers)
    .
At some point, Holly mentions “The shining” movie which sort of confirms that the book isn’t part of the S.K universe but in the boss fight when they talk to the outsider and he mentions the word “Ka”, which leaves me asking what does it mean having the shining as a movie in the book and the word Ka in the same universe?

I'm sure someone has already brought it to your attention in case you didn't already know but this is somewhat of a sequel to the mr. Mercedes series. That is where the character Holly comes from and I highly recommended as it is a very different take on detective stories with Supernatural elements.

eric gen rogues Yeah I was actually. I'm not a fan of horror books in general, so I never really tried him out. The only reason I did was because the description of the Outsider was that it was a mystery novel that has a supernatural twist....which got my interest. And because I enjoyed it, I'm gonna give his more loved books a shot.
Also, another reason I never picked King books up is because every friend I have that has read him (not to mention Reddit and other msg boards) say that he is amazing with the buildup, but is crappy with endings. And endings to me are what make the book worthwhile. Not saying it has to be a happy ending, but it has to be a satisfying ending at the very least. And apparently King has had an issue with that.
But he's 1/1 so far in my eyes, so I'll keep rollin

It is funny that I am seeing this Outsider review when I am three quarters of the way through my next fave writer Dean Koontz called What The Night Knows and I would say that it is quite an evil read with a supernatural twist and the character developments are written solidly by the author also. If it is just a well-written thriller you are in the mood for anytime I highly recommend Jefferey Deaver who wrote the Bone Collector series amongst many other of that psychopath chasing or crime scene investigation -type genre.

I liked the ending confrontation in CONCEPT, but it wasn’t actually explored nearly to its potential. The characters having a conversation with this strange, bizarre monster, and it seemingly having these insecurities, was interesting, but then they just kill it immediately. Weird, considering that there is then like 50 pages of useless “what comes after” boring filler

I've muscled my way through so many SK novels bc when he gets it right, it's oh so very right. But I have complaints which make me hesitate. 1) Many times a fantastic, strong premise fizzles upon completion. Violin crescendo ending in a squeak indeed! 2) He over describes. Sometimes I love it, sometimes it's tedious, but there's no doubt he gets away with long digressions and wordy tangents. Much like I'm doing right here in my comment LOL 3) Sexual violence. Like seriously, what is his damage???? I can think of many many times when it was simply gratuitous, maybe even a lazy shortcut to demonstrate "evil person" or "evil influence". IMO, he is welcome to wax poetic about body fluids, and I will tolerate it just fine, in the context of CONSENSUAL situations. I would very much welcome recommendations that take that final complaint into consideration :)
My fave SK books? As a teenager I was wrecked by The Stand, made everyone I knew read it so we could all be paranoid about people sneezing together LOL
The Dark Tower, but really only the first 3 books have my heart and soul.
And... Insomnia. I never hear people praise it! Weird and awesome, I freaking loved it. And extra special bc my FIL gave it to me, the only book he ever bought me. My husband & I both read and loved it, and got to rant about it together 💓

You know the scene in "Misery" were Annie Wilks talks about these cinema-screenings were every episode ended with a our hero in a situation that seems impossible to escape from? She realised there was no clever twist, that they went round the problem to continue like nothing happened, that they cheated. "He didnt get of of the cookadoodie car!" Well, thats how I felt when realising whats behind it all in the Outsider. There is no clever twist, no bright explenation or mindboggeling realisation. He didnt get out of the cookadoodle car, indeed.

    Daniel,
If you are like me and like to follow up dark or difficult reads with light or funny reads, you should try Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series. He’s a little out there... imagine a cocktail of Douglas Adams, Kurt Vonnegut and Monty Python. Set in a dystopian alternate reality based in England where literary figures are held in higher regard than movie or tv stars, Britain has been fighting the Crimean War for 130 years, Wales is a communist country and the public is obsessed with who really wrote Shakespeare’s plays. The Eyre Affair is the first in the series, and follows literary detective Thursday Next as she delves into a case in which characters are being stolen out of famous books. It sounds literary and lofty. It’s really not. It’s absurd and funny. Some familiarity with Jane Eyre would be good, if only by reading a plot summary somewhere... but I think you mentioned you like Hitchhiker’s Guide... if so, you will like Jasper Fforde.

Starting a Stephen king is boring, there is usually a lot of descriptions, post mortem of characters but finally when you get the grip it's a very enjoyable journey. That's why people like the movies more based on his novels..He is genius..Look at some movies like the Shawshank redemption,Misery,Green mile. They are just masterpieces . That means the core story is really mindfucking awesome but the lot of descriptions kind of kills the enjoyment..I remember I was reading 'The outsider' by Stephen King . The thrill was really good but suddenly when Terry Maitland( the center character of this book) dies things became crazy, supernatural stuffs entered where it wasn't needed. The thing is his books needs a lot of trim's, that's it. Then they will surely become more enjoyable. I left The outsider at halfway..Should I finish it?

(the complete opposite of Brandon Sanderson, who has probably thought out the story of the book that he will write in the year 2056) SK has other strenghts though, characters for example.
I feel not everyone has the same "favorite" SK book, but he has a lot of very good books. The Long Walk, Misery, Needful Things, Dark Tower 4, The Running Man are my personal favorites.

Someone on amazon whined about the murders of the book. And I'm like well duhh. They were disgusting and disturbing as hell it made me cringe but it was part of the horror. The crime was gross so it made the threat of the outsider even more impactful. Stephen King plays on his own fears obviously and he once said his worst fear if anything happened to his kids. But since hes a writer he gets more elaborate.

Read King's son's book, NOS4A2! Real damn good. I wasn't super happy with the ending but the book as a whole was good, and you can really tell that his son grew up reading his father's work and tried to make something of his own while copying his father's in a way to tell a story.
But yes I read the Outsider a few month's back right after it came out and it was real good. i thought there could have been another element added in to make the story better. It felt like there was something missing. But when I thought about it more, it was one of his more concise and tied up books in decades.

The reviewer seems to be making excuses for King. This COULD have been one his best works to date & that's why The Outsider (isn't that a Lovecraft story) was very disappointing for me. The build-up was very well done but I wanted to hurl the book out the window for the ending. Stephen King knows how to end a horror novel? Sometimes. Not this time. Holly Gibney had no place in this book. The characters were very well developed & could have figured things out for themselves without bringing in a gratuitous character from another book to kill off Pennywise, I mean The Library Policeman, I mean The Outsider with one hit from a sock full of ball bearings. A better ending would have been having the Minotaur from Rose Madder show up & battle The Outsider Dreamcatcher-style, peppered with lots of wisecracking one-liners.

honestly, this book has so many problems, I'm actually disappointed in this review!
the first half of the book is so much worst than the second half! and the second isn't much better! if an author not as famous as King wrote this, people would really tear him a new one!
    - there are so many scenes where King starts to describe his ass off! I mean he gets into so so so many unnecessary details! you can even skip complete paragraphs and you won't miss anything! it's not even to set up a mood or a place or anything it's just there to fill pages! thankfully it gets much better in the second half of the book.
    - so many people don't like catfish cuz they think they're ugly, but add some lemon and they're delicious and . . . . WHY, GOD WHY, why do all the characters in the first half of the book have to have these kinds of stupid things to say?! they're talking about a murder and these characters start to talk about the most stupid page filling crap of all time! WHY? they're background character that we see only once, so why do we need to know these crap about them? again thank god it got much better in the second half of the book!
    - by the way, Holly was the best character in the book, none of the other characters come even close! as much as I thought liked Ralph, after Holly was introduced I just realized how bad his character and every other character is comparing to Holly!
    - one thing I didn't like about Holly was her theories about the outsider, the theories were fine but the fact that ALL OF THEM were spot on was just stupid! in the final fight, the outsider pretty much confirmed every single thing Holly said about him! that was ridiculous!
overall the second half where the supernatural was openly introduced is so much better, it's almost like two different people wrote the two half of the book! I give the first half of the book a score of 5/10 and the second half the score of 7.5/10!
It's a good read but it's not really anything special! 6.5/10

Holly Gibney (among other things) ruined this book for me. I can't stand her. I feel like King wanted to write another Hodges trilogy type story, but since Bill Hodges is dead, he had to come up with another character that somewhat resembled him: Ralph Anderson. A strong start, but went downhill fast. 2.5/5.

WE BROKE GODS LAW. 2000 YEARS AGO, GOD PROVIDED A SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST WHO SUFFERED AND TOOK OUR PUNISHMENT ON THE CROSS. THE BIBLE SAYS IF WE DECLARE WITH OUT MOUTH JESUS IS LORD AND BELIEVE IN OUR HEART GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD YOU SHALL BE SAVED. Romans 10-9. "This is his best novel since IT" How can you make that statement when you said you didn't read all of his books???? Also you couldn't be more wrong, you really don't know King to say that. Revival, Green Mile, 11/22/63 are just a few that are way better than The Out
    sider.

People who are let down with the scene where the outsider dies with what almost seems like he didn’t put up a fight….. people forget what they have read like for the whole investigation when holly finds out that he feeds on children you realise he is weak when he is hiding in the cave THATS WHY HES THERE BECAUSE HES WEAK!!!
so it didn’t even have the velocity of trying to take them down confidently! 😂
