I went to Nanny Day Care Center and Jamaica House Basic School. This is one of the gifts that my father blessed me with. Thank you so much, Honorable Beverly Manley. The mindset influenced my dad so much and it also changed the trajectory for a generation of women in my family.
I did not feel inferior being of a darker hue, and very early in life, my father taught me to love my natural hair.
I was empowered!

wow, what was it like being a part of that? it seems so interesting, and something that could be brought back for my generation.
They bridged the gap between "uptown" and "downtown", a movement needed at the time when Jamaica was defining itself after centuries of colonialism and inequality. She's truly a Queen. A wonderful history, indeed.
As a child was enthralled by Michael Manley budget speeches, to this day no one has been able to engage my attention. Messianic leader was correct, no wonder they called him Joshua. Thank you Bev for being & providing the grounding & influence that galvanized so many ordinary Jamaicans during a period when we truly believed "WE CAN". I am so fortunate how that period, with the great visionary leadership, as shaped my mindset.

I thank God that the history of Michael and Beverley Manley is been documented so that future generation will learn about our history and the enormous contribution they have made to Jamaica development.
I'm just enjoying this documentary. My love for this couple has never wavered. These two individuals loved Jamaicans.

So eloquently narrated. I enjoyed listening to every word, every phrase and every sentence.
I cannot describe how proud I felt as a young , black girl when Beverly Manley wore her afro instead of the usual false drop curls to her wedding. So many exciting changes were taking place in Jamaica and the world and her confidence and leadership was so encouraging! I remember her coming to my school ( Knox College) to speak and we all just sat there in awe of not just what she was saying but also her captivating smile !
The realness are genuineness of this giant of a woman are beyond mere words. There were many important policies that were advanced and implemented that I had no idea she played such an integral part. Jamaica salutes you Mrs Beverly Manley- Duncan on this day, our 60th year of political independence! Long live Jamaica and all those who played a pivotal role in shaping our national identity!
So glad you got to watch it on Independence Day 😁 bev is 80 and jamaica is 60, their stories intertwine as she is a child of the soil that was formed by the experiences of an average person in jamaica before jamaica lead herself. But 8 short years after jamaica was made independent bev made here way to the top to be able to influence the direction of the nation. Specifically seen here with the difference of Insight on the bus Raise and the understanding the effect of 1 cent reprice difference. We all impact each other and the country based off experiences.What a joy to share and talk about a story about one of us on a day like this 😁 maybe it will impact some future leaders later on

Cannot believe that Beverley Manley Duncan is still so very beautiful ! I have been away from Jamaica for forty odd years but still remember my always wanting to be like her. She is truly a Jamaican legend, may God continue to keep her heart pure !
This documentary has really impressed upon me the realness of a national consciousness and, how individual lives ripple out into the collective. And to see Beverley, a poised, conscious, black, Jamaican woman who's left such a legacy for my generation, gives me great inspiration. And to learn too that she was born only a day after me. A true Scorpio woman! It all makes sense. A timely trove for Jamaica 60. Well done!

Let me preface by thanking the esteemed Mrs. Beverly Anderson Manley Duncan and all who have made this documentary possible. Also let state that Mrs. Beverly Anderson Manley Duncan is categorically a queen, our Jamaican queen and not a queen by way of qualification. If anything, others are white, Asian, et al queens.
What would the esteemed Michael Manley’s impression and legacy have been without Beverly Manley, by his side-functioning as his intellectual equivalent and muse?
As a [First Lady] Beverly Manley stands nonpareil, hitherto, even when compared to our contemporary [First Lady], who herself is in active politics. No other Jamaican [First Lady] has managed, without seemingly trying, to champion and represent interests that not only mattered to me, by we’re requisite for a fledgling [independent] nation.
Though Beverly is, not was, a crusader and champion for women’s rights, one would be remiss to think that she did not function in a greater capacity to inform a plethora of other faucets of the Jamaican society-Beverly Anderson Manley Duncan is Jamaica’s mother-queen and our Winnie Mandela.
It is safe to say that the extremely beautiful and necessary Beverly Anderson Manley of her youth has evolved into to today’s more beautiful and graceful Beverly Anderson Manley Duncan. Her cerebral faculty’s capacity and function are remarkable.
We don't have 'First Ladies' in Jamaica. It is he wife of the Prime Minister!

I'm so happy that Beverley has finally come out to reveal her truths from her own perspective. This is what understanding and balancing the different forces that participated in history is all about. Very clear, very intelligently done, very informative and most of all very insightful.
This is a valuable look inside a very important decade of Jamaican history. Many have told the tale, but it's good to hear it in Beverly's own words.
In 1970 I migrated to the US to reside and attend college. Although I had no great knowledge of Michael Manley, during that period, nevertheless I was quite familiar with the name Beverly Anderson, due to her connection with Teenage Dance Party. Like most teenage boys, in my neck of the woods in Ja., we all had a crush on Beverly Anderson due to her connection with TADP. Beverly was tall, stately and gorgeous with a warm endearing smile. Beverly traveled all over Jamaica with her show and was always well received. On one occasion I saw her in Mandeville, when she brought her show there, and it was love at first sight. Subsequent to 1972 when Beverly and Michael became an item by then I had completed my junior year at Brooklyn College and was deeply entrenched in the study of Marxian Economics and Political Economy. Fidel and Michael, both of whom espoused socialism, became my role models. Unfortunately Ja. was not ready for socialism because the J'can people lacked the discipline and commitment necessary to build a socialist society and the experiment eventually failed miserably. Subsequently in 2000 I read Rachael Manley's book Slipstream and loved the story of how Rachael attempted to play matchmaker between Beverly and Michael. In her own words Rachael describes how her efforts to unite the two became an obsession, and how in spite of inviting Beverly several times to take tea with herself and her father, Beverly never accepted. Naturally this was a reflection of Beverly's character for as we would say in Ja., Beverly was certainly not cumu cumu or licki licki. Rachael further describes how Beverly and Michael appeared to have an uncomplicated relationship and Beverly never nagged or quarreled incessantly. I enjoyed both of the videos that have been aired and can say without reservation that my teenage crush on the ageless Mrs. Manley Duncan is alive and well. Mrs. Manley Duncan I pray that you continue to live a happy and fulfilling life filled with the joy of sex as you have certainly earned it.

I greatly admired Michael Manley beginning in my teenage years in the early 70's growing up in New York. I was enthusiastic about sociology, world politics and culture and became accustomed to visiting the home of my Jamaican best friend and looking for the Jamaican Gleaner to read about the goings-on in Jamaica and would absurd myself in the subject of Democratic Socialism, Marcus Garvey, and Michael Manley. At 14ys of age my plans were to move to Jamaica when I became older, give-up my U.S citizenship and obtain the education I needed to get in with the Jamaican goverment to work under the leadership of Michael Manley and the PNP. I really strongly admire Michael Manley and believe if he him and the PNP party would've continued in victory Jamaica andbits people would have been in much better circumstances than which they are today. Back then, some outside forces saw Jamaica's potential to rise as a shining star in the Western Hemisphere and acted with rivals against the PNP to cause caos, and turmoil and division in Jamaica as they also have done in Grenada.

I started to become interested in politics when Michael ran for office. Manley brought Jamaica from the clenched fists of Colonialism. Jamaica stands proud today because of Michael Manley. I recalled he said. “Educate the Nation”Under Michael regime, thousands of Jamaicans learned to read…He taught Jamaicans to believe in themselves. He will always be loved .
I congratulate the young people who did the hard work to preserve such a rich history of our country.

Real shame those JBC tapes of that era were obliterated. BMD is one of those influential Jamaican women whose work transcended generations. The memoirs of Beverley, Barbara Blake Hannah, Leonie Forbes and Yvonne Brewster are all essential reading for Jamaicans keen to learn how this fantastic 4 impacted black culture both here and in the UK and where their respective career paths crossed each other along the way.
Lots of work to get what we used in the film. It wasn’t as easy to store film as digital! Luckily this film will be here forever 😁 hopefully the story of bev will be told by others ? Is there anyone you think we should do next?
Merlene Ottey would be a good one as little is still known (in her own words) about her journey and the sacrifices, challenges and impact on others along the way. Probably been overseas may things tricky to interview her.

I will never forget i was 5 years old when Michael Manley campaign in my community when i was a little girl living in Jamaica and he shook my hand and smile that was over 50 years ago, that was one of the best days of my life that i will never forget. His power & influence was phenomenal. He was one of the greatest priminister and leaders of all times.

I remember Beverly Manley as a little girl when she came to Toll Gate square in Clarendon with her husband Michael for rally. I remember going with my Grand mother who was a die hearted PNP.She is sounding the same.

As a child growing up in the 70’s in Jamaica i was aware of the PNP party as my grandparents were staunch PNP’s. I remember a beautiful childhood until I migrated to Canada at 12 years old ; however I’ve always wanted to return to my sweet sweet Jamaica to contribute to the country that gave me so much.
so many gaps and cracks in the society, i say all of that to say “thank you Beverly and the team” for this wonderful documentary. This Documentary has reignited my passion and renewed my faith in making a difference in our beautiful little Island. Loved every minute of this documentary and cant wait to see the other 2 parts. Beverly you are soo beautiful and regal not to mention intelligent and an absolute firecracker.

This comment is exactly everything and more! The whole reason why this story needed to be told and from the lens of young Jamaicand looking back. We need our own icons we need heroes to latch on to. We went there during the idea part when we were forming this identity. So important for these things to be retold in the format that captures the young persons mind and in the format that respects those who were there! Have you shown your children yet?
