I see so many young horn players showing up with no microphone, cord or stand. Have your own quality, functioning equipment. In my market, if you show up expecting to play from books or sheet music you’ll be in trouble. Learn the standards in different keys. When in doubt leave it out. Like you said, be on time, SOBER, prepared’ properly dressed etc. ask if there’s anything you can do during load out. Some people want help some don’t. Great video.

Very good advice about talking to and thanking band leader and band members for the gig, ..I would also add thanking sound crew and wait staff/ venue management to this list..I've gotten countless gigs via sound techs and venue managers because I showed up early and left late! Thanks Jay!!

I left the neckstrap at home on the practice stand. The other sax player had a spare in her case so now I always have a spare, too.

Great content. I told students for years that the most important parts of gigging were... 1) Be dependable. If you say you'll do the gig then do it. Be on time with what you're supposed to have and dressed the way you're supposed to dress. [on time means early. my rule was at least 30 minutes] 2) The man/woman who writes the check gets to pick the tunes. Your job is to play them, not gripe about them. 3) Be/Stay sober. While you should enjoy yourself, it's not your party. 4) Like it or not, the way you play, while it is important, is probably not the reason you'll get a call back. 5)Learn the horn, learn the tunes, just play (paraphrased from Charlie Parker) P.S. I keep 3 neckstraps in all my cases. I keep 2 mouthpieces in all my cases. I keep at least 3 reeds in all my cases even though I use synthetic on most gigs... All of these habits are the result of problems/issues/oopsies over the years.

I’m just hearing this tutorial. I can tell you of some of the most embarrassing things that has happened to me I pray for a church band I’m self taught that means are played by ear I can read music. I’ve listened to all your steps one day I was out to play and forgot my neck strap. I have several horns and then each horn case I have the required things that she should have neck straps I also have Stans I also have reeds mouthpieces etc. as you quoted in the tutorial. But on this particular day for the life of me I didn’t know what happened to my neck So I improvised and used the strap from my saxophone case as a makeshift neck strap . I just want to thank you for the information that you give us each and every time I come and check out your tutorials. By the way I play an alto saxophone.

Great video as always. Great advice. I've learned all of those tips over the years as well as being a band leader.
I've been gigging since 1982 and have played literally thousands of gigs.
Many gigs I have extra keyboard gear, amps, percussion, etc. sometimes a WX5 windsynth. A lot to keep track of.
Only twice have I forgotten something major. Once I was playing a theater gig with alto and doubles. I forgot my tenor and brought a bari instead. In my own band I played alto and bari and was just so used to loading those horns... also had a lot of stress going on in my personal life. My wonderful wife made a very long drive in traffic to bring me my tenor. Good thing I went to the gig early.
Another time at a convention gig I brought an alto and tenor instead of a tenor and bari. I had a long drive to get my bari. Again, it's a good thing that I was there early.
Once my daughter borrowed my bari for a performance when she was in high school. Somehow my neotech harness got swapped with hers (the Jr. size). I'm a larger fellow. Her harness was way too small. The guys on the bandstand got a good laugh when I tried to put it on. Good thing that I had another harness in my alto case.

My one and only professional gig back in college was very similar. Someone called me up and said, show up in a black suit, bow tie, and it was to be the "standard music." I had a blast, but I confess I struggled with a full night of sight reading. The guy I was subbing for was available after that and I never wanted or got a call back, but it was fun!

I’ve now got a check list so I never forget anything but of course it can still happen. go on youtube and check out that band you're supposed to play with. most of ny's wedding bands have demo clips so you get a feel for what you're getting yourself into.
PS: forgot my horn once for a gig overseas....could have sworn that i left my backup there only to find an empty case! luckily the local music store let me borrow a used super action 80 for those 4 weeks. left my mouthpiece once too, same situation....bought a new one and that was the best 'mistake' ever!! still have that amazing mouthpiece, and it's been so many years :D

I'm not even dreaming of arranging on the fly on day... 🙂

The voice mail message from the band leader said all I needed was my sax. I did bring my clarinet only because I had not taken it out of the bag I was carried with me from the gig the night before. That was a hundred years ago.

I somehow managed to forget my mouthpiece for a high school jazz band concert and it was the most terrifying moment of my life when I realized especially because the jazz band director was a complete perfectionist. Miraculously, one of the other saxophonists had an extra mouthpiece and my director never knew what happened. He would have absolutely killed me. Definitely never made that mistake again...

  • @DaytonaRockledgeSpeedway

Great tips, and they work the other way around too... If you find yourself involved with a group that always has stragglers who show up late, or the leader is unprepared and everything's disorganized, or the gig never seems to match up to what was described... gravitate away from those players. Their antics will drag you down and you'll lose your hair and/or develop bad habits. If you act professionally and bring your "A" game to each event, you shouldn't have to suffer fools consistently. Life's too short.

For myself it I was called to do a last minute contemporary rock worship song(and by last minute I meant 3 hrs before it was time) and they wanted me to have a big roaring funky sax solo because the bands leader heard myself noodling over some funk backing tracks. I was all set to go placed next to the drummer when I realized that unlike some of the other smaller roomed jazz gigs I was accustomed to,that this music was going to be loud and that I would need to be mic'd up. Since I had forgotten to inform the group leader that I needed a mic and I myself did not have a mic with me at the time, lets say that big funk solo turned into a faint whisper in comparison to the band.

100% truth. My mind is always blown how this stuff isn't common sense.

I once had to use a shoelace for a make-shift neck strap because i forgot to check the case before leaving for the gig. That won’t happen again. 🥴

A friend asked me to sub for him on Bari, piccolo and tenor for a salsa band. I brought all my sax gear but when the leader asked me "where was my music stand, my stand light and my mic and mic cable" I said I wasn't told to bring them. I said that for my own band I supply all that equipment for my players. He said that without that gear no one would hear me, so I started packing up to leave. He quickly changed his tune and set up all that equipment for me. It seems he had it there all along.

Great advice. I'd add bring a pencil/eraser. And warm up discreetly and let your playing during the gig speak for itself.

Good advice. For a lot of gifs pencil is necessary and you don’t want to be the person asking to borrow.

I remember this one time, I showed up to a gig. I had brought everything I thought I needed and once I went up to perform, I realized I had forgotten something. I'm not a professional musician. I was wondering why those guys were staring at me.

I play with a wireless mic and left my XLR cable for the receiver at home.

I was once on tour and my primary guitar got left at the previous club. I only had my backup, I’d be SOL if something happened

I'm kinda hoping to get in with the community big band where I live. I got to play with them when I was in high school. My school band director put the word in for me. And they actually gave me my first paid gig. (Luckily, they helped out with a tuxedo rental for that particular gig.) Cut to 20 years later.... playing again, and not sure what to do to find spots for a sax player.

Network at jam sessions, take lessons from local gigging musicians. They may pass you gigs that they can’t/don’t want to do.

Blend in with the band your playing with. Don’t try to stand out unless it is a solo. I played with multiple bands for years as a result of the previous comments.

We you say “Jazz musicians: play more appropriately” we here “jazz musicians: play the pentatonic scale”
Also I’ve forgotten a neck strap before. A band mate forgot her flute more than once which is why I now always bring my flute to gigs just incase she forgets hers again. Sax players: don’t forget your HONKing doubles!!!
