    So in order to decant a wine, the principle is just to expose it to as much air as possible? Is that why traditional decanters are so wide at the base? I'm thinking of using a bunch of water carafes to do the same thing

      so the decanter really serves two jobs: one is to let the wine breathe and the other is to remove any sediment if it's there. If we just want to let the wine breathe then any container with a wide base does the same thing...we're just giving the wine more contact with the air. thanks for the question!
