The Abandoned Tulip House Down South in Virginia Left Forgotten Since the 90’s

  • This stunning old house originally sat about 30 miles away on the Main Street of the nearby town. Sometime in the 1980’s the house was deconstructed and moved to the field it currently sits in now slowly crumbling away. Sadly the house has been empty for around 20-30 years now and it’s unclear whether anyone moved back in after it was moved, as the newel post seems to have never been fully put on and sat on the porch for years. Strange and sad fate for this beautiful old house built in the early 20th century around 1900. Glad to document it one last time! With the large holes in the roof above the stairs it won’t be long sadly for this old house before the roof caves in. Thank you for watching and hope you enjoy this revisit!
    The original video will be linked here.

    You are so caring and respectful of these old places. This is a beautiful house. Why would they go thru the expense of moving it just to let it rot? Makes no sense to me. Thank you Kappy.

      Sadly the elderly man who went through the trouble of moving the house in the 1980’s had just about finished everything on the house when his wife passed away and then shortly after he did as well. Sad place, been sitting for a few decades. Seems too late now sadly. Thank you for watching!! :)

    The style of the door and trim is earlier than 1900. Wish we could have seen the staircase. The locks are much earlier as well. My guess would be in the 1880's. Sometimes when realtors are lazy they automatically fill the date of construction of old homes as 1900 instead of doing the research.

    It is such a pity that something that was so well built to survive this long even after being removed, will cease to exist in time… it’s homes like this that make me wish I was skilled at renovation and revival! I guarantee homes built today will never live half as long as these old homes.

    This home is beautiful. With it having been moved to this location in the 80's or 90's, the foundation is much newer and appears to be in good condition. With a good foundation, this house could still be saved...but it needs to be soon. Wish I had the funds.. I would love to tackle a restoration like this. Thank you for doing this video.

    What a stately old home on the land. Beautiful, soft colors in the rooms and simple, elegant fireplaces. It's surprising how deteriorated the roof and thus some of the rooms and floors are. A shame.

  • @brokenglass849
    @brokenglass849 Рік тому +12

    This house appears to me to be much older then 1900, this may be a remodel date. I believe this started out as an Italianate house that they turned into a four square. Notice the brackets under the eaves, they are decidedly Italianate. The front doors and staircase parts on the porch (balusters & newel post) are older, as are the rim locks with white porcelain knobs. Locks from 1900 would have been mortised into the doors, with metal knobs. It also appears the attic dormer was added by breaking through the existing roof as seen at minute 11:04. The dormer wood even appears newer and cleaner. Someone lost their shirt with this one.

    • @annabelleb.8096
      @annabelleb.8096 Рік тому +1

      I agree with you, but why would someone add a dormer? I think it would have looked better without it.

    • @brokenglass849
      @brokenglass849 Рік тому +3

      @@annabelleb.8096 I think the reason might be that when they made the conversion, they were trying to be true to the four square style they were changing to. If you search pics of four square houses on the internet, I think you'll find that the majority have dormers.

    Our driveway to our old brick house is almost a 1/2 mile long. Never used to be. From what I've been told, when they put in the main gravel road, they made the driveway longer. While walking the fields and pulling weeds, I found a big green marble. Folks tell me it probably fell off a wagon that kids were riding back in the day. How cool is that? :)

    What a shame is right. Today's homes are so boring. I would call them lifeless. This house ,as many old homes, has so much character and beauty, and yes life. It's true they don't make them like that anymore. Even though this house is near its end, it's still a treasure to my eyes.

  • @ittybittykittymama7582

    Hey Kappy! I thought this one looked familiar...can't fool a photographic memory! It's still a pretty old house, and I still love the front porch treatment, as it's so delicate and frames the front door so well. Too bad that modern architects aren't looking to the past for inspiration.
    Man, I can hardly fathom how many teams of mules or oxen we're needed to move this house! Maybe it was done later, with trucks, though.
    My great grandmother's house was built and given to her by her father, as a wedding gift. Not many years later, the State of Florida decided to build a road running right through the house! My two times great grandfather was not having that, so he hired men and mules and they literally jacked the house up, placed wagons under it, hitched up mule teams and moved the house a hundred feet back from the proposed road! Nobody was gonna tear down that house!
    It's still local legend how Josey Crabtree moved his daughter's house! Of course, without plumbing or wiring to worry about, it was probably easier to move that house than this one...
    Anyway, thanks for the return visit! Love to you and hope that you'll take care of yourself. Give my love to Ruby!

    That was a Jim Dandy new cinder block basement they built for it. Why would someone go through the expense of moving this structure, fitting it onto its nice new basement, reconstruct the interior brick fireplaces, then walk away to leave it to rot like a broken dream? But broken dreams is the kind of world we live in today. It's a sad, sad world as we watch the seasons turn all around us.

    Something I noticed, this place has a Smart Metre, with an underground service.
    I wish you would have showed the face of the metre, we could have determined if the power was still on.
    I would assume it is, most Power Company's, don't normally leave them behind, when disconnecting a service.
    With this place having a Smart Metre, somebody must have been living or working on this place no more than 15 years ago, it wouldn't have been installed on an abandoned house.
    The far side of the basement was open.

    If it was moved in the 80s there were several rough economic times then. They spent money on the new foundation and on moving it. Then maybe the funds ran out and they held on thinking more money would be available later or the person died before the project was completed. Lovely old place. Such a shame it is being left to die. I believe this style of architecture would be called “Italianite”. I used to live behind a large old home with a very similar look. I hate to say it, but moving it probably did more harm than good. I have seen this kind of thing before, where people with good intentions want to revive a grand old beauty like this, but then they run out of money and the work they did and left incomplete only contributed to the rapid decline of the structure. Probably should’ve been left where it was originally built. Great video, as always.

    There was a bedframe on the 2nd floor that if it had been full size and square instead of round would have looked like my grandmother's old bed. In fact I thought it was until I realized it was a twin and curved.

    That’s a beautiful house, Kappy. Thank You for showing it. But it sure seems strange to move a house and then abandon it again. Hmm. Makes Me suspicious. Was someone hiding something at its original location? Another mystery.

      Depends on when it was moved. Could have been lived in for many years after it was moved, and then left to rot. A fire would be a purifying, cleaner end to its exstence, like cremation. No years of a long disgraceful decomposition.

    Question is why did they move this old beauty? What a shame. I love these old houses. The fireplaces and staircases are really beautiful and well made. Sad.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    Kappy, you Sir are a brave man, seriously that place scared the hell out of me. I am shocked you didn't fall through the floor at some point in you exploration of that house. When you mentioned the house was in its final days you weren't kidding, man. But I gotta tell you that home had so many beautiful elements still standing amidst unstoppable decay and rot. You and I both share a love of these old places, but please be careful friend, I know you are but damn. Thanks Kappy, and by the way thank you for all the research you do into these places, it adds a special layer of insight, depth, and care into your excellent videos.

    Even if the structures can’t be saved they should at least save the antiques inside! (If they’re not too far gone or moldy)

    Our 2 story brick home where I grew up was built by the first banker of our tiny home town in the 1850's. Wish we had the $ to do repairs... some day... we are getting there! Blessed with almost 200 acres

    What a beautiful old house. So glad it wasn’t spoiled with graffiti. I’m curious, the green grass around the outside of the house seemed well kept or mowed. Was that the case? It sure looked mowed. Not an overgrown mess like with many abandoned houses. Thanks for the vid! 😊

    At 11:57 love the matching toilet and sink. Nice bathtub and cool to see a niche in the wall for the hand soap at the sink. Makes me wonder if there was one reachable from the tub.

    There was a wall they torn down where 2 fireplaces appeared as if they were both in the same room. One would have been a formal dining room.
    In spite of decay, some lovely details are still visible. Very sad.

    Why on earth would anyone pay to move a house only to abandon it? Sounds to me like something went haywire towards the end of the move. Sadly, I don't think this one will be standing much longer. I'd love to have one of those mantlepieces. It truly is a shame that this house has met this end.😢

    Thankyou for sharing. This is a beautiful house. Maybe they moved it for someone who wanted to live out there but then the persons health took a turn for the worse?
