  • What’s up adventurer. Today we’re taking some castings of vintage and newer Joe heads and modifying them to accept a modern style body! It was a fun project, cheers! #skunkworksstudios #axisofawesome #gijoe #gijoeadventureteam

Heck yeah! That’s quite the process hopefully we can simplify it a bit. I hope to eventually get a video out on the heads you sent me. Great work!

This is kinda funny for me. I went through a similar process making my 6 inch heads this week. Now, I have it dialed in on the cad to print my heads without drilling and shaping it out now.

I got pretty close to the MX-02 European body color with Smooth-On's Medium Flesh colorant and some alcohol inks. I think it was 3 drops Medium Flesh and 2 drops of orange per 50 ml of resin. Since the alcohol ink colors are not standardized like Smooth-On's pigments, I expect it would need some tweaking.
Neck Joint Adapters for Hot Toys are pretty easy to find on eBay. Phicen heads, I think, use the straight hole with a keyed notch at the front of the head, but most of the neck joint adapters don't seem to bother with the key. I don't know what the width and depth would need need to be to match that.
Another very useful video! Thanks for sharing all that information and keep making the world a better place!

@skunkworksstudios I checked my notes and test pieces from last summer: it was 2 drops each of Medium Flesh and Orange alcohol ink for the MX02-A. The Soldier Story body I got from Cody last month has some extra orange so maybe 2 drops Medium Flesh and 3 drops orange per 50 ml to start. I sent an image via Instagram.

I can see the cup in the bag to the left of the picture when you are showing the body. The cup goes on the ball in the body, and then the flat side goes into the bottom of the neck. Et voila, no electrical tape.

I think you will find this video interesting: ua-cam.com/video/LCFzbhYcmPM/v-deo.html Crafsman is always coming up with great projects, and has corresponded and collaborated with other You Tube creators, and I'm sure he would be more than willing to chat and share tips if you are so inclined.
The part I think is of most relevance to head sculpting begins at the 14:20 mark and shows the basics of rotocasting for making hollow pieces, and earlier in the video a variety of resins that can be used for casting soft pieces that are quite durable and flexible are discussed. I'm heading to Lowe's today to get some materials to make my own casting rig.
All that aside, your heads came out looking like higher quality versions of the Hasbro originals. You have a master's touch with the painting and flocking, and all of your customs are miles ahead of the stuff you see on the pegs in brick and mortar stores.
Excellent video, and thanks for sharing your talent with us. As always, Keep Living the Adventure!

@Kneon_Knight The SmoothCast 45D is also a good recommendation for the material (GI Joe heads are 50-55D hardness), but since it is amber clear it needs white pigment to make it opaque (Crafsman points it out in the video). Keep on Steady Craftin! #Crafnation
