You are the best reviewer for bags
Thanks!
Great video. Your use of packing peanuts is awesome. I always figured the bag manufacturers exaggerated a bit, nice to see an actual demonstration of bag volume.
I agree about the peanuts - would be nice to do this for every bag and create a database of listed vs measured. But I understand that is a tall order, especially since "what can it fit" is more important in the end. I really appreciate that you do so many packing videos since it's sometimes difficult to imagine how my stuff would fit in a given bag seeing how there are so many variations between manufacturers on pocket layout, opening style, etc. (think Pakt vs Minaal)
@@lanceklein2746 Creating a database would be a tall order. Probably what I'll do is measure bags when I review them and include actual volume in the specs
Thanks for the in-depth review, haven't seen this kind of detail anywhere else. Much appreciated
Glad it was helpful!
THANKS for the spreadsheets on your site!! It's something this nerdy gal had planned to do for myself, so you saved me a LOT of research time. 🙂 The more I see over-stuffed soft luggage, the more I think I'm going to do a hard sided carry-on to prevent the bulges. At least I'll have no issues with a personal item backpack since I'm a hiker and used to organizing one of those! Pretty new to your channel and really enjoying all the fact-based, logical presentation!
Great, glad you like the spreadsheet and the channel =) No shame in using hard-sided luggage and personal item.
Excellently presented informative video. Thanks mate👍
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Love this channel! Very well done! I just purchased a Allpa 28 for my personal item bag after one of your reviews. I just do weekend trips so a few days worth of clothes is all I need.
Awesome, glad you find my channel helpful =)
Did you get TPU or del dia? How’s it going a year later?

This is so informative and answers my latest travel-pack question. I just returned from a 5-week, 8-country Balkans tour, with only a carry-on backpack (the much-reviewed and much-praised Cotopaxi Allpa 35L travel backpack) which made it so much easier (compared to using a standard carryon-size rolling luggage or heavier (40-50L) backpack) to handle flying/airport connections, same-country and border-crossing on trains and buses and of course a lot of 30min-to-hourlong walks on urban cobblestone alleys and hilly streets. Made a huge difference in mobility and allowed me to be flexible and opportunistic. Now I am ready for the next step in downsizing (for an even more comfortable trip) - a similar-length budget trip with an even stricter personal item-only backpack. I was not sure if I needed to buy a new backpack small enough to be personal item-sized but large enough to carry more than 20L, since my other regular backpacks are all a shade larger than the 18-14-10inch (or tighter) personal item limits. I am so glad that you demonstrated that it is easy to use a small-ish but still somewhat regular-sized frameless backpack (with 24-28L capacity) that (if not fully cramped) can be "squooshed" down to meet the 18-14-10inch (or tighter) limit. I would add that there is a benefit to using a slightly larger but squooshable backpack - assuming the personal item-only traveller would be wearing some of the heavier/thicker clothing items and stuffing pockets with some gear to make the pack fit for boarding purposes (as I plan to), the "excess" on-body stuff can be shoved into the not-completely-packed bag after boarding.
Sounds like a great trip! I do like the strategy of taking a larger bag and squishing it, rather than too small of a bag and overstuffing.
Such a good video! I'm attempting my first one-bag trip in a few weeks, to Savannah. If all goes well, I plan to one-bag travel to Boston and a few other places this summer - all with a personal item only.
Nice, sounds like an awesome trip!
Thanks! Before I found you here I only saw carry-ons with wheels! I really like the shot of you with the carry-on and personal item bag. I'll go back to see the brand. Thanks!
Give me a screen time and I can tell you what bag it is.

Wow! Best review ever. This popped up on my TV feed and I rushed to my phone to like and subscribe and read the other comments.
I have several 40-45 Lt backpacks but I just got the G4Free (Amazon $40) Mountaineer 35L pack for upcoming Europe trip.
Trying to go personal item only in case I want to fly on budget airlines.
It has an incorporated pack cover in a bottom pocket and there is extra space there.
It also has under straps like hiking backpacks for tent/closed cell mat etc. I ordered a 3-pack of round bottom silnylon (Wise Owl) dry bags. I have stored the 5 and 10 L bags in that pocket. The plan is to be able to pack stuff (I always shop) in a dry bag and strap it to the underside and return with a carryon size and a personal item.
I’m a 5’, female, senior so the smaller pack size makes sense. I have small wheeled cases but with be staying at hostels and need to navigate cobblestones and stairs.
Looking forward to finding more of your videos.
Sounds like a good plan, I haven't tried that bag but it looks good. Thanks for sharing =)
You are the best. As a full-time traveller, I am always looking to pare down. We are not packbackers but do a lot of train travel. Thanks to you I bought a 35L Cotopaxi and am still in search of the perfect personal item bag.
Nice! Cotopaxi is a great bag, glad you found my channel helpful =)
You have really sold me on the Cabin Zero 28 Military... Thanks!
It's a good bag =)
@@OneBagTravels Based on two weeks of reading, watching videos, and stumbling onto your channel, I purchased the Cabin Zero Military 28L last night. Now I wait for delivery. What packing cubes would you say?
@@ryanmcdougall22 I like Eagle Creek Compression cubes, I've had them for years, lightweight and still holding up good. That pack you can fit one medium in the bottom and a small cube on top.

Love this video and especially the volume tests. I would love to see the true volumes of lots of bags. I’ve found out the hard way that companies shoot from the hip with stated volume. I have the north face’s 31 base camp duffel in xs and I love it. I’m curious if it’s worth getting a Osprey 40l transporter duffel for trips that I need a couple more things. When I look at pictures and videos they look really close in size but when I take their measurements online and do the calculations for volume there’s a big gap. Ultimately I want a travel duffel style bag and I like Osprey.
Haha, "shoot from the hip" is exactly what they do. I like the Transporter, its a big duffel with a ton of room, even if it's not exactly 40L
Great bag sizes comparison and explanation. One bag travel is my favorite traveling style in most of my travels on my channel 😀. The only time I got to use more than one bag is at the Himalayas in Nepal.
One bag traveling is the best!
One challenge with getting the right "personal item" fit for underseat stowage is that in many cabin configurations that space is not exactly the same size and shape for aisle/center/window seats and further gets partly occupied with equipment boxes for entertainment systems or power ports.
This is true, aisle seats are often the smallest. My strategy is to pack as small as possible, if it won't fit under the seat I just store it in the overhead
Not to forget, your feet also have to fit under there somewhere
@@kurachan101 ideally 😆
I've been designing, manufacturing and selling backpacks for 20 years. We don't rely on bag measurements for calculating pack volume. I do use a method similar to yours. Except that we use dry beans for fill. They are smallrr and fill the voids better. When calculating volume we don't add in the volume of external pockets. This includes water bottle, shoulder harness and hip belt pockets. Taken together, they can add several additional liters of storage.
I've seen other companies using 10mm plastic balls to estimate volume, which is probably similar to beans. Probably more accurate than packing peanuts.
I just booked a flight and had no idea I could take a free personal item with so now I'm shopping. I like that Cabin Zero. I'm also looking at tons of others that size like the king kong 23, Motherlode EVD, Northface Day pack, etc. I'm so confused on which to buy lol.
Love your reviews - you are the best in the biz! For one bag travel, domestic, 4-5 days, would you recommend a Patagonia MLC 30L (maybe need to be strategic in packing)? Also thinking of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L…
They're both good, Mini MLC holds more than you think because it's just a big duffel style compartment.
You are right, weight is really the killer at that ~40L size. For myself, past 30L I use wheels.
Yeah, unless you're just going to your hotel, it's not worth carrying around a huge bag all day
Thanks!
Double coffee today! Thanks =)
@@OneBagTravels :)) You are so very welcome!
Great idea for a video! The packing peanuts were a great visual.
I’m looking at one bag travel. I’m okay with paying the fee for a carryon bag if I have to because some airlines such as Ryanair are too restrictive with the size of their free personal item (40x25x20 cm or 16x10x8 in.)
But I still want my carryon bag to be able to fit under the seat ahead in case the overhead bins are full. Is the size of your wooden box (18x14x8”) a good parameter for this?
I think 18x14x8 is a good starting point, it's a common size for US airlines. If you're flying on a more restrictive airline you could underpack so it fits in the spacer, or just pay the extra fee and use this as your 2nd bag
you a nice job i like your one bag travel, I went to cabin zero website and they sell 28liter for r;yan air and easy jet and all other discount airlines thx for what you do
Nice, Cabin Zero has a lot of great packs that fit budget airline dimensions.
Love the capacity test. I'm curious of the bellroy transit workpack as a personal item. Would be awesome if you do the volume test on that one. Many thanks in advance
I don't have the Workpack right now unfortunately
@@OneBagTravels That's okay, still love that test. Trying to test myself with that pack and not bring too much with me 😅
Just the personal item is the way to go! I keep inside my 25L backpack personal item a back up personal item (a sling) in which I have the absolute necessities (non-clothing, mostly). My nightmare is to have my 25L personal item bag checked at the gate.
Gate check is the worst. What personal item bag do you use?

My Osprey Farpoint 40 has been excellent for over 10 years. But now I want to be more minimal and since I want to travel more I plan to try out these budget airlines so I can save some money. Looking for the perfect personal item bag that will work for Spirit, Frontier, etc. i definitely prefer a backpack so that I can jump on a motorbike taxi with it and be nimble. Any recommendations?
The new Osprey Sojourn 30 is a nice little pack, a wee bit over dimensions for personal item but I think you could get away with it if it's not overpacked. Smaller than the Farpoint, much easier to pack.
@@OneBagTravels Thanks for all the advice. I searched here on UA-cam for "RyanAir Personal Size Item" Since I know they are even more strict than the US Budget airlines. Well someone posted a youtube short of the Cabin Zero 28litre bag fitting nicely into Ryanairs measuring box. I think that will be my go to bag. I will also ensure not to overfill it. :)
Which osprey were you holding when talking about under seat in the beginning?
That small black one? That's the Osprey Daylite
I'm taking a wide-ranging trip to Asia for 8 weeks. I'll be taking a check-in. I only want one carry-on and I don't want to lug around a lot of weight but I also don't want another roller bag. What do you suggest? I was thinking of a 28 liter Cotopaxi? Would you suggest a smaller day pack or maybe sling bag to use like a purse?
Cotopaxi is good, and the Allpa would work for most airlines as a carry on. One thing you need to be more aware of with airlines in Asia is many of them have more strict weight restrictions than US/Europe. It's common to see 7-8 kg (~15-17 lbs) limits for a carry-on for an economy ticket on almost every major airline. So size may not matter here nearly as much as weight. And yes, a small daypack or sling are both great as a daypack.
@@OneBagTravels thank you!
Have you tried the tomtoc 28L travel backpack ?
I have the 40L travel backpack, it's great, I'll be posting a review in the next few days
Awesome job with the packing peanut volume test. That is very helpful and sets your reviews apart from others who only use the stated specs when actual volume may vary significantly from the specs. This is especially important for OBT people like me who try to stay between 15-30L for all travel.
Thanks! Glad you like the 🥜🥜🥜
I'm flying Swiss and Austrian in almost two weeks and on their websites they don't allow backpacks as personal items, but they do accept handbags, laptop bags or shoulder bags (40x30x10 cm), I'm not a hand bag girl so I'm looking for one that will fit under the seat
Are you sure? I've never heard of this rule, I can't find it on their websites. I don't think airlines care what style of bag it is, as long as the dimensions and weight match their requirements. Austrian website states for personal items "This might be a handbag, a travel pouch or a laptop bag, for example." but that doesn't mean you can't take a backpack.
@@OneBagTravels one of the flights is with Helvetic and on their site it says I can bring a laptop bag or a handbag in addition to a carry-on, it doesn't say anything more
@@k.c.3674 You're right, their page says laptop bag or handbag. It doesn't list dimensions but says total weight can't exceed 23kg, which is a lot. I think you'll be fine just taking a small bag of any style as long as you don't go over total weight. If you're concerned about the style then just carry the backpack by the handle.
@@OneBagTravels I already came back and they didn't care if it was a bag or a backpack, it just had to fit underneath the seat
@@k.c.3674 Hazzah! Good to know, thanks for following up
Which are the bags you personally choose to use? (and for which occasion)
I use a different bag almost every time I travel, but I tend to like bags that are ~30L and lightweight with decent organization. Like the ULA Dragonfly, Cabin Zero Military 28, Patagonia Black Hole Pack, Evergoods CPL 24, and Thule Aion 28 are also two of my favorites. I'll go smaller (25L) if I'm traveling somewhere warm where I don't need bulky clothes, and will go larger (35L) if it's winter and I need a jacket, hat etc.
Can i use traveling backpack as personal item ? Will it be a problem if its too long
You can use anything as a personal item as long as it's not too big. Every airline has a different requirement, I'd check their page to make sure it will fit in their sizer box.
For the cabin zero pack, did you exclude the outer zipper compartment in the volume measurement test? By the way, I still think you are the most practical and informative bag reviewer out there.
I filled all the external pockets of these bags as best I could. The outer pocket on the CZ bag is quite thin so when the main compartment is packed you can't fit much in there, I think I had maybe a few handfuls of peanuts in that pocket when I filled it.
@@OneBagTravels That's interesting. I have this pack and had the Cotopaxi 28L and found they both pretty much packed the same amount of stuff. Except the Cabin Zero Military 28L was so much easier to pack.
@@cksiam which one do u like the most?
The Cotopaxi is nicer and was more comfortable. I took it on one trip and while it was nice it just wasn't enough for me to keep it. I realized I don't like how clamshell backpacks pack by splitting the volume in half. I always struggled where to put in a second pair of shoes. I didn't struggle as hard to put the same amount of stuff in the Cabin Zero. I kept the CZ knowing it will pack what I need and still meet personal item size dimensions. Plus it'll make a better day pack being lighter and more compact. I also purchased the Thule Aion 28 which I prefer over the Cotopaxi.
