I love how this soundtrack serves two purposes. One to give you the feeling that you are going to make a last stand by going after the core, and then the other purpose to make you feel like its over for good when you flee.
It's more than that. It's a melancholy reflection on the lives lost on the journey so far, and how things have fallen apart. At the same time, it's hopeful for the people that can still be saved, and that things can still be made right.
I'm not a huge fan of the Wiiware soundtrack. But this. This is the song I always come back to. This specific rendition of the Moonsong really hammers in the somber tone, about how you're at your lowest at the time this plays. This is one of, if not THE highlight of the Wiiware soundtrack, because this song knew its place within the story and it aced the feeling it was going for. It didn't underperform, it didn't overperform. It was done just right.
I know the WiiWare OST is pretty decisive, but *goddamn* did the composers knock it out of the park with this one! I may think the original OST is the best (granted I've only played using the OG soundtrack), but I can definitely say this is my favorite version of what was already one of my favorite tracks
I think this song isn't just meant to be simply pretty, I think it has a lot of meaning in the story, too. (Spoilers below) Upon every death of each character (Curly drowning, Professor booster), you are met with silence. The game sort of leaves you to think about it, by yourself, without any sad music trying to emotion-ize the scene, or tell the player how they should feel. It's a clever design choice, as you aren't very acquainted with many of these characters, and odds are their deaths won't mean much. However, when you revisit a ruined egg corridor, you find Kazuma, who has given up hope. Every effort the heroes of the island have made have been easily thwarted and thrown backwards by Misery and the Doctor. Those who put up a fight have perished. He offers to you, a chance of escape. To abandon all who might still be on the island, but escape with your life. Or, you can choose to stay and continue to fight against overwhelming odds, and to scour the lands for a solution. It is then that this music is heard. It compliments your decision to escape or stay so well, which either way you go. This song is a testament to a battle you're losing. It has a way of allowing the player to mourn everyone who has died in the story, by themself, individually, without the game having you watch a cutscene showing you what to think and feel at this moment. It's a distinct, personal experience and I don't think it could have been done better.
I definitely prefer this song without the drums, me parroting the chorus but it just gives the song such a somber aer to it and it fits into Outer Wall so well, especially story-wise.

And the craziest part is the original song was made by someone with no knowledge of music theory. Yet he nailed the entire score.
This one feels the most calming/peaceful than the other versions. I like it.

I like this version, it's so much more emotional.
I cry whenever I hear this song. This song has so much sentimental value to me. It is the most beautiful song in the world. :'-)
Yeah it is
Same here!

You could have saved them. You could have saved *her.* It's all on you if you let them die.
This is one of the few tracks I say they really hit the nail on the head with in the remixes.
Say what you will about the wii soundtrack, but this is definetly my favorite version of moonsong
God, this is such a beautiful melancholic piece of work.
I absolutely stand by this being the best version of it too, not even a contest.
The definitive version of this song. I swear, I've been looking for this for AGES.
Best version of moonsong, EVER!
Jeremy Er it's good but not the best
every version of moonsong is the best version
And this one is the bestest :p
I can sleep listening to this
Outer wall. Best stage of the game, no contest.
I mean
don't forget the Plantation, the area after the Outer Wall
Brings back memories of the first time I played Cave Story...
This is ten times better than the original
UM no
nah the original is better
I like this better than the other versions
I swear this song gives me a TOME vibe.
Can't unread.
Can't unsee.
Sounds like a wii
I think the ghost cat's projectiles are supposed to be white balls of yarn

@XylitoI i agree. the older version was fitting enough. it just lacked stereo sound is all, i guess.
YEAH!!!
this sounds like a protoman theme .-.
Rockman megaman Jesus you're right.
sometimes he dont miss
Up until 0:04 would make a sweet ringtone. I like it.
one person apparently hates the wii version of the game's music
me
i feel sad and its been so long ago
I guess it didn't really matter whether there was percussion or not on Moonsong's part. 8)
One of the few remastered tracks which aren't _terrible_ ,at least
I was hoping this was going to sound like the website version.
@Evilguy951 I'm in agreement with you!
@BoomyBoom1 Not all ghosts.
@SkaiCyan NO! they're dead nyan cats that left they're rainbows elsewhere. how else could the fly?
@MarioGalaxy243g5 That's internet for you!
@Jesiasan
I thought those were balls of yarn/wool
Yeah, even if this hits weak, I can't dislike this. The whole Wii soundtrack is still my least favorite, but this ties with the original for me.
@MarioGalaxy243g5 Personally, I enjoy it.
o3o yo game company! What's with the spermie cats?
Too slow for being shot at by cat ghosts :/ i liked the original better
i cant beat the game
@heyjo0205 Er...GHOSTS Dude....Heheh. NOT sperm...Heh....Ew...
Who the hell brought in the GXSCC instruments to this, they make this sound horrible.
Take that back
You take that back right now
