Nothing is common sense for uncoached beginners like myself. Thanks for these insights because I find breathing comfortably a big challenge at the moment.

I'm trying to be more bilateral!! Good info here, and good to know that my breath every two strokes is a common thing. I have a half ironman coming up, so I'll try to work on switching breathing sides during my training so that I can use that in my race!

Primarily a bilateral breather, but will change it up according to what l am doing. For open water bilateral helps with keeping in a straight line and sighting.

Thank you so much. Ironically as a newbie to front crawl, I never thought I could change my breathing pattern from every 2. after turning and then maybe every 3. or/and 70%/30% right/left. Always thought it HAD to be every third. Great insight. I think it will be much easier next time in the pool. Instead of fitting in the -every third time - I'll now try a pattern that fits me. Thanks again, mate :) All best Peter

I breathe every two regardless because I find that beyond 100yd I crash from exhaustion. However, if I am only doing a 50 yd sprint then its every 4-5. I honestly believe it is "Whatever works for you". Look at Caeleb Dressel; he breathes every two I believe.

I'm a runner doing swimming for cross training. I have a tendency to want to breath every 4. That way if I don't want to do 2 I could still breath on my right side. Is that a bad thing?

After 3 years of freestyle swimming I am going to change my breating pattern from 1:2 to 2:3. By coincidence I noticed I was going faster with the same effort. I could allready breath bilateral every 3 strokes but never incorporated it during my triathlon races because of oxygen depletion. So like I said during some training laps I noticed a time gain with a 2:3 stroke. This will I hope give my rolling, pulling and lateral muscles a better balance. With less drag as a result.

Hey Brenton, like you I prefer breathing to my left side in a 1.5-2km race but my most recent one that meant I copped several mouthfuls of water because of the direction of the waves and current. I tried to keep my pace while breathing the other way but slowed down. Felt like a choice between swallowing water one side or swimming slower by breathing to weaker side. Any advice?

I really struggle to swim straight in open water. Breathing only to one side might be the cause. But I am quite unflexible to turn my head to the right side. Do you have ideas how to make the head more flexible in the neck region to make breathing to both sides easy?

Thanks, this is useful to know. What about the amount of air to breathe in? Been swimming 5 years now but think in the past I may have tried to gasp in too much air. Recently I breathed in less air every two strokes while sprinting and felt much less out of breath. Is that just me? Would appreciate some advice or a video on this topic. Thanks for all the great content

    • @brothedude8759

C H Its much better to take in less air each breath because if you take too big of air the next time you go up for a breath there is still left over air from your last breath, its carbon dioxide build up that never gets flushed. But the quick breaths flushes all the carbon dioxide completely out for the next breaths which in result, you’ll be less tired and less fatigued

Great videos…. Extremely useful tips! I need a clarification.. when we bring our face up to breathe it’s too small a window for the ‘diapharagmatic breath’… so how exactly is it done??

    • @goodyoneloves
      @goodyoneloves 2 роки тому

Not sure you got breathing correct but you dont need to bring your face up or lift it. Instead just rotate as your body turns side to side. As soon you rotate there will be enough gap to sip quick air and proceed with normal stroke further. Blow thru noe4 and mouth and when breathing in use mouth only

  • @jeenjeanjeen

It's easier and more natural for me to breathe to the right side but I'm faster and get more distance per stroke breathing to the left side 🤔
It also feels like my left arm catch is nonexistent when I breathe to the right but comes out when I breathe to the left. So in an effort to become a faster swimmer, I'm forcing myself to breathe to the left and it sucks.

I like this video, showing the swimmer for a good length of time, under water, and above. Really gives a good view of what is preached to be the "proper" way to perform freestyle. Showing the modern catch, and glide technique. However, this swimmer who appears to be practicing, isn't following the advice of this video. In that he's breathing on one side, and every stroke. But we understand the intent being advised. :) Thanks for posting.

    • @EffortlessSwimming
