I love these classic EP episodes. It was such a major avenue of game discovery for me back in the day. I'll never forget Vic & Tommy's review of GTA III in 2001. Bless you, Vic, for keeping the memories alive in 2023, and much love from Calgary!

Carmack taking a question about what new stuff the game is doing in general to brag about the engine's very technical lighting capabilities is so awesome lol. Then he calls himself the final filter for anything, "obnoxious." Even the bit about the animation and interpolation goes back to John. ID and their game design was so wildly tech-driven. How they haven't gotten around to making that Masters of DOOM movie yet is beyond me!
This is such a good look at how everything was in 1997 hehehe. HD was just a glimmer in our eyes, and freaking Quake 2 was new! And EPN was making our lives happy via TV :). Also John Carmark...was and still is a massive freaking geek xD.
back when character and models were still animated vertex by vertex by hand (that means each individual point of a polygon) thats why the models in Quake 1/2 warbled so much
I love these old interviews. But I’m really glad you have these Victor and are releasing them because it’s very important to the preservation of the game. You need all this for the whole story and I’m so happy u have these. Thank you.!!!!!!
I love this, really big influence in my PC gaming. I got into PC gaming after moving over from Sega consoles in 1995 and my first FPS was Doom II. Then moved on to Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Redneck Rampage, Outlaw, Dark Forces, Quake II, Kingpin and Half-Life. This was the golden age of PC gaming. Quake and Quake Ii are the games that I have instaleld the most since then and I have got back into them following the remaster. I am even making levels for them again.
Shoooot I wasn’t on the cutting edge of cable tv, I didn’t have access to stuff like this. I was a magazine kid, reading every line written two, three times over. Going over photos with a literal magnifying glass to glean something, anything, about my anticipated games coming out. That I can go back and look at this stuff some twenty years later is just a nice perk of current times isn’t it!?!
You can tell Carmack loves Quake 2 just from a technical standpoint. I don't know if Romero was responsible for Quake 1's atmosphere or if it was a happy accident. NIN really helped set the tone as well. Quake 1 to me is an intriguing masterpiece. 2 sorta feels like "hey check this out, it looks better!" and it did. But, looking back I feel like 1 really has heart. 2 just seems to be missing something.
Yes! Q1 was groundbreaking in many ways, just in multiplayer I think it did like 5 never before unimaginable things, Q2 didn't innovate as much but it got the "higher level" stuff like visuals, sound, enemies, weapons etc to a different level. Here is just one anecdote from way back: There was a big website called FilePlanet and it would host all files that you could download freely for games, back then you didnt have 20 other websites that did the same thing, so this was THE place to put your game stuff. So all user made content like skins, models, new maps, campaigns, mods was there, and we would constantly check it for new stuff. Q2 for many years had the largest amount of files by far, no other game came close. Going into a game for the first time and having to fight someone that's actually a Smurf with a railgun or a Teletubby or just a Llama or a bear, people made skins and models for Q2 for everything you could want. You wanted to be a giant peanut? go to fileplanet and download the model. Those two games brought me so much joy with friends, I am forever in debt to Carmack and co.
Yes these old episodes are amazing. Been watching since the mid 90s, had to catch the show on Much Music (I think?) after school before I jumped into gaming. Please do more of these; I’m sure you have the catalogue to release an episode a day!
Wow so he said interpolation creates a frame of animation between the animation like key frames. So it’s like DLSS 3 only it’s focus is on creating extra animation to look smoother rather than extra refresh rate frames on screen.
This is awesome. Thank you!. I still think the quake lore should have been tighter / more focused instead of spread across two totally different concepts. I just played through the whole Q2 campaign. It's a little clunky with all the backtracking but still super fun. So glad the rerelease had a compass added to it.
Tim Sweeney, founder of Epic Games and creator of Unreal engine, is the same age! It's a weird but cool coincidence that two gaming legends were born in the same year and both founded their respective companies in 1991.
This is one of my favorite old PC games. It was awesome in every way. And this is really cool to see a bts from bitd. And some kid that looks like Vic!

Man, love the old feel of game studios when they were smaller making games for the fun of it. And they didn't have unrealistic ginormous expectations.
ID were definitely also making games for money, being successful as fuck.

The game has crossplay just like with the remastered version of the first game, which means that the PC veterans would crush the console noobies.

Such an awesome video! I love those days and miss them dearly. Thank you Vic for keeping this incredible footage and sharing it with us!
quake 2 was my jam as a kid, a quake movie could work if done right
It would probably turn out like the Doom movie. Instead of The Rock, it would be some other Hollyweird specimen
It couldn’t. Because there’s 2 stories in quake. The quake 1 and 3 story.
And quake 2 and 4 story.
They’re completely seperate.
