Overture to Tannhäuser
Willem Mengelberg, conductor
Concertgebouw Orchestra
Recorded Live on October 27, 1940
at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
When restoring a recording like this it is usually a good idea to do as little as possible and resist the effort to make it what it is not. Considering that this is Dutch radio, the mics were great and the quality for the period is already very good. The only real effort here is to remove prior efforts to make it sound more modern and offer it at original levels.
Some surface hiss is present, it has been left alone to preserve quality.
Field acoustic restoration (2024): Paul Howard - The Yucaipa Studio
NOTE
This is not stereo. A mono recording preserves field information in a different way than stereo, but it is still there. This restoration uses a process which makes it possible for this acoustic information to reproduce in the same manner it occurred in the original studio itself. In engineering terms this is known as the "field characteristic". That is what we are listening to.

A typically strong performance from Mengelberg and his orchestra. Thanks for the polishing.
Every time im surprised with the amount of room ambiance i get from your restoration compared to the usual versions here on UA-cam. I should probably stop being so surprised you’re doing an awe inspiring job.
P.S. what’s your dream restoration project?
Actually, the closest thing to it would be a full restoration of Furtwangler's Complete Ring Cycle. But I honestly never thought about that. But the biggest dream project would be to actually get paid for what I do by the industry. But that is a pipe dream and I know it. My experiences with the industry were not good, which is why I post here instead of trying to work with them.
@@RS3DArchive I think I speak for most of your subscribers in expressing my great appreciation for your work on the channel. It's always a pleasure to listen to a new upload, as well as revisiting them in your large catalog of past restorations. You provide a valuable resource for those who enjoy the great recordings of earlier times. Thanks, as always.
