Barbara Mandrell is known for songs like “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” “Sleeping Single In a Double Bed,” “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want To Be Right” and more. She won back-to-back CMA Awards for Entertainer of the Year and remained a dominant woman in country music into the 1990s.
    Why did she disappear?
The answer doesn’t have as much to do with a deadly car accident as it does what happened immediately afterward. Mandrell and her husband are no longer active in country music, but they’re still active. This Secret History of Country Music video explores what happened to Barbara Mandrell.

Cyd Kriletich When I met Barbara Mandrell in the 1970's Country was enjoying a surge, but she complained about being passed by newer female artists. I joked that she was Country before it was cool. I met her in a small bar/sandwich shop where she was singing by herself. Someone was heckling her. I told the guy to shut up. She talked to me later and told me the heckler was her husband and he wanted to go leave. :)

I had the great pleasure of being in an opening act with my band for a couple of her shows in 1973. We actually backed her up on one of the shows. As mentioned in this video, her act included playing every instrument on stage including mine - the bass. Since I'm 6' 4" and she's about 5' 2" or shorter, there was a problem of getting the bass to fit without it touching the floor. She said that when it was her time to solo on the bass, for me to keep it on and she would stand behind me and reach around and play my bass while my hands were up in the air. That got a huge response from the audience and after the show we talked backstage for a while. She was so down to earth and super talented!

This woman had some really good songs back in the 70's and 80's. She suffered a very bad car accident back in 1984 and that kind of changed her. She went through a very dark period with recovery after the accident and her husband and kids were there for her and that is what helped her recover. I remember her mentioning in old interview years back that she said it is a blessing to wake up everyday not be in any kind of physical pain because after the accident she suffered for quite a while and when she got better she was very thankful. As this woman got older she just withdrew from the industry because she had her time and knew it.
