Photoablative iridoplasty is not new technology. We have been doing it for years with argon to treat angle related glaucoma. The major concerns around cosmetic photoablative iridoplasty using ND: Yag are 2 fold: 1. The effects of severe laser induced uveitis with pigment dispersion resulting in hypotony from chronicity. 2. Glaucoma in all its nuances The studies you may have referenced are on the effect of ND: Yag on iris stroma and the rate of absorption by the the epithelium are all sound theoretically. What we have not defined clearly is the exclusion criteria and the workup behind it. All studies suggest that it should be a safe and revolutionary procedure but the rules have not yet been clearly defined for a safe, predictable cosmetic procedure with the emphasis on cosmetic and the litigation attached to this word. I would hate to be on the receiving end of a rare scenario of an undiagnosed autoimmune patient that happened to be in the hunt for a new look...

This is the kind of informational video I needed to watch. Unfortunately it's not as popular as the videos that sell this procedure. People are being deceived and companies are getting so rich that they are silencing the consequences. Thanks a lot, Doc. 🙏
I enjoy having my brown eyes, and brown skin - it's there for a reason. The only procedure aside from a FUE hair transplant I had done from a Norwood 3, is possibly Lasik eye correction. This whole change your eye color with lasers - is a big BIG pass for me.
I just love how science keeps giving us options for things we considered impossible in the past, I can't wait to see how this whole thing evolves in the future, maybe we'll be able to even change skin colors or the colors of special segments of our bodies.
Who will people have left to hate if they change skin colors? Those medical records will be a stockpile of gold. I'm sure that would be highly controversial, changing people's skin color.
I'm waiting until they can reduce the amount of pigment removed per session, precisely because of the risks you're describing. I want bluer eyes, but I don't think I'm ugly or suffer from lower self-esteem, so I intend to be patient and go forward cautiously.
@@NafZ if other people wanted to make their skin more white or more brown, they should be free to do so, but I personally have little desire to change my skin tone
why people play around with their eyes boggles my mind. I won't even do corrective laser eye surgery to correct my vision because even though it has shown to be safe the risk is too high for me. I will wear glasses for the rest of my life and I really love having my brown eyes. My sight means a lot to me and as I get older I am going to have enough troubles as my eyes change and I just don't feel adding to the problem of aging eyes is worth it.
I'm sure there is a parallel universe where the majority of the population has blue eyes, and they are paying mega bucks for Melanin eye injections to turn their eyes chocolate brown. 😂
@@zahararay5611 Yeah I was just dating this girl from South Africa and she told me a couple times how she loved my brown eyes because everyone has blue eyes where she lived.
Many blue eyed people (from an area where blue/light eyes are more common) have told me that they found my really big brown eyes attractive, I also have full lashes and I love my eyes. Please don't hate yourselves for not being able to confirm to European standards of beauty diversity is what makes humans beautiful.
Thank you so much Dr Ripa for your informational video. I heard about medically changing your eye color but, what popped into my head immediately was permanent blindness. I know someone that was a diabetic but; went ahead with the laser surgery anyway and one of her eyes ended up being permanently damaged by it. She said that the damage was irreversible but, her eye was extremely cloudy and blurry.
Everyone has blue eyes underneath. Blue eyes aren’t actually blue they’re transparent but the Raleigh scattering makes them appear blue from light like the same effect as the sky and the sea. That’s why if you remove melanin, they’ll be blue underneath. Sometimes green as well depending if you also have phenomelanin in your eyes. 👍🏾
@@kij7412 you know what I meant. It was a typo, which happens to everyone. Light brown has eumelanin actually but less than dark brown. Unless they’re hazel or have green in them then they also have PHEOMELANIN as well as eumelanin. The darker the brown eyes the thicker the eumelanin. The lighter the brown eyes the thinner the layer of eumelanin. Light brown has a thinner layer of it.
I have a rare brain disease called IIH. Along with it causing our bodies to act as though we have a brain tumor we also experience a lot of high pressure in our eye's...I can assure EVERYONE who is thinking about that procedure that if you knew how it feels to have high pressure to the point you can't lay down...Your eyes feel like they're pulsating...I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, you wouldn't do it if you knew.
@@raeshunmeadows1999 Yeah it sucks but I've found thing's that have brought my pressure down a lot... A-C Carbamide & Bilberry. They tested me a week apart the 1st time my eye pressure was 30... A week later they tested again and it was 24.
I have seen a video with a girl that change her eye colour in a Turkish city, and her eyes become from dark hazel to a beautiful green-blue colour, after they took out the melanin. The have shown the procedure gradually, and the doctor said that he is letting a very small circle of melanin around the pupil, that he will not touch it with the laser, to not affect the vision, and it was seen in the eyes of the girl to, but from very close. Than is true? This will help that will not be any complications at all in the future? Because I really wanted to do it. The surgery was 4k euros, that is not such a big price.
When you mention colored contact lenses make sure you stress the fact that they're breathable. The cheap ones people use for cosplay or Halloween can be made from polymacon and you can't wear them for long w/o risking serious injury.
We have a surgery available in the US now. The lasers are approved by the FDA and they’ve been practicing for 15 years without any patient having serious complications and much less going blind.
@@0bs1n65 it’s called keratopigmentation. The company that does it is in New York City. They go by keratonyc. They have UA-cam videos, a website and Instagram. There’s testimony of real people tht I’ve gotten replies from. I’ve done A LOT of research and couldn’t find anything about anyone having serious complications about eye sight. The worst thing I found was that sometimes older patients experience dry eyes for a couple of months after the surgery but then go back to normal.
I'm scared to have surgery to correct my eyesight (and I know that it has been around for decades now and it is very safe), imagine how I feel about having laser for cosmetic purposes. I certainly wish I could sport the same beautiful green eyes as my beautiful sister but I wish to safeguard my eyes more.
Similar for me but… If beautiful green eyes were a common side effect of LASIK I would at least be thinking about it. I’m not saying I would for do it but that would be like getting two procedures for the price of one.
I saw one of these companies online a few years ago. I don't remember the name but I do remember it was based in Mexico. I sent them an email requesting more information just out of curiosity and they said pretty much the same thing you said here, that it was just a 'low powered laser' that broke down the melanin, it may take more than one session depending on your starting shade and desired shade and mentioned that additional treatments may be required in the future. I was never serious about changing my eye color, but then seeing that it wasn't permanent really turned me off it. Even if the first session is fine, you could end up with problems after a second or third.
@@Sarah.G_2 that's the thing, they never explained any of that to me. I don't know what they're doing or not doing that would make their procedure less effective. Their response was all very vague and was more 'showy' than informative. I'm willing to get it was all a scam or at least a quack.
Never in a million years would I risk my vision or eye health. I have perfect vision aside from being light sensitive, but my focus is extremely clear. As I look around me, here in the US, most people can't say that. Most people require glasses or contact lenses and it makes me appreciate my vision.
That is awesome you have great vision! Congrats. Here is a video I have done on light sensitivity if interested - ua-cam.com/video/188f45ID-kI/v-deo.html
I already have pigment detachment in my irises, and I go to the eye doctor a few times a year to check my eye pressure. I also have crazy light sensitivity.
As I ran across this online the first thought was poag, as I read on I came across a Dr in NY ,Dr. Kevin Niksarli and from what I read it seems like they actually put a type of ink into the “superficial “ part of the cornea their words not mine. I would like an in depth answer of what is the superficial part of the cornea for as we are aware that all parts of the cornea have their each individual purpose. If the pigment is removed not only are you taking the chance of pigment induced poag. But also the muscle fiber of the iris are sticky so I don’t see how that can be done and if you add pigment you lose space somewhere in the eye, wherever it may be. Your video was made I see five months ago but I was like how in the world is this done in NYC 😲 with FDA approval?
Having very light eyes is actually not as fun as people think it lets a lot of light in causing you to squint all the tine and have problems seeing correctly in bright lighting. These procedures are so risky you could go blind by doing something like this or in the least really mess up your vision. Is it really worth it to have blue eyes?
I mean... blue eyes evolved in cold climates where there isn't much sun. It's just that the white race has spread its seed far and wide... so now white people are outside of the types of environments they evolved in. Plus globalism of course. Your eyes are perfectly adapted to the environment your ancestors evolved in. Although honestly, blue eyes probably became common among white people due to sexual selection, as opposed to some practical advantage that it confers. Blue eyes are undoubtedly beautiful. If they were not, these operations would not exist.
@@anarki777you're very wrong in saying "white people spread their seeds so far and wide" saying the non-white communities that might have coloured eyes must have to do with them being with white people? that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Can we naturally lighten our eyes? My eyes were bright for 25 years but after I had my daughter they got darker. I just miss my brown eyes lol. They are so dark now
FYI to anyone curious, I've had this procedure done. And I'm laughing my ass off every time a doctor threatens with these "huge chunks of melanin that will clog the drainage of the eye". Buddy, I'd love to see some huge chunks of melanin actually go anywhere. Because the process is so incredibly slow and the difference is so tiny you won't see the difference with your own eyes for years! Also, I don't know whether it's true, I've not tested it with a microscope myself, but people doing this procedure claim the melanin isn't just dislodged and left to float. It's mildly damaged so that your immune system goes in and eats it. No clogging anywhere. Inflamation and light sensitivity do rock up right after the sessions, but the doctor gives you pills for it. I've been dealing with this for 3 years now. Never did I feel my vision remotely threatened, but I do feel bummed out for spending nearly 6K just to have my brown eyes just a tad-bit ashier.
@@jutguandaphsty5058 I've been having sessions since 2020. I've had 4 phases, each containing 4 appointments, so in total I've been under the laser 16 times. I'll go back to the doctor to complain and hope he throws in a freebie clean up but I worry he'll make me pay 900 euro for an extra session :/ This has been WAAAAY more expensive than I expected.
This procedure is inducing another condition called Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS) which leads to Pigment Dispersion Glaucoma (PDG). They are giving you a new disease and you are paying for it.
Can you make a video on keratopigmentation in particular? The procedure makes an incision into the cornea and displaces pigment gel inside there. It's been gaining in popularity and I'd really appreciate a video about it
I had it done in April 2022 and so far no issues at all. Apparently it's the safest way to change eye color, it has natural ingredients in the dye. As well they use it normally for medical reasons and now for cosmetic reasons as well.
@@novahman1077 that’s great to hear. I’ve been wanting to get it done but there are mixed opinions and I’d rather wait until there are more studies on the procedure. Though, so far, everyone I’ve talked to who has had it done is happy with the results
My eyes are almost completely grey ecept for a tiny bit of brown which blocks the grey abit. I thought of doing just one of my eyes as its only a very tiny bit of brown in the center i would like to remove.
It will be another decade or two, before this procedure is fully perfected and tested for long term effects both good and bad. The laser although impressive, has yet to "Wow Me" with the results of a dramatic color change that more appealing then the beautiful brown color they just zapped away. I do see that the laser technicians are getting more creative with the laser and creating a limbal ring around the irise for more definition and enlargement of the eye and also a star blast of the original eye color around the pupil to create contrast, depth/dimension and a blending effect as the pupil retracts. Will be very interesting to see before & after pictures of patients many years from now!...

I never knew this was a thing until I saw singer, Tameka "Tiny" Harris, with icy blue eyes. She is an African American woman from the 90s R&B group Xscape. Tiny used Brightocular, not a company mentioned in this video, to get iris implants. This procedure is somehow reversible and has no down time. The thing that upset me the most is she was encouraging her oldest daughter to get it done. She did and regretted it and I understand she got her procedure reversed. @@DovahQueen1994 in reality is the opposite, dark eyes are much more resilient and don’t have the same problems of light ones, and also I find them much more mysterious and magnetic, but yeah I mean dark brown like when you can’t see clearly the difference from the pupil 😍
Question, what about people with very dark eyes who are still photosensitive? Even a bright clouds have them squinting in pain and needing sunglasses. People always declared that it's the bright coloured eyes who suffer and the lack of melanin for light distribution makes sense but I never seen anyone talk about a fully melanin-ed eyed person suffering the same fate. ^^'' Is this some kind of phenomenon or exception to the rule and if it is, whats causing that?
Melanin in the eyes is not only the coloring pigment; it is also a natural substance to prevent photosensitivity. The more melanin you have the less photosensitive your eyes are.
@@DrRupaWong you’re very welcome ma’am there’s a guy from Argentina who went thru it and described the risks on the release form on UA-cam a long time ago. I’ve also one friend who’s gone thru it and he’s very dissatisfied because the pigment gradually came back and then it was left with a dull color
but is also viable to assume that if you don’t overdo sessions your system will be able to expel the melanin because that’s a normal physiological reaction!! I wouldn’t worry about the laser but on excessive sessions. I good parameter is the tattoo laser removal; the pigment is destroyed and your system needs one month to expel the pigment before another session.

Hi Dr. Rupa. Thanks for the eye-opening video, haha. So, since light-colored eyes reflect low pigmentation, is this characteristic related to the skin tone also? For example, this black girl has a skin darker than mine, and most black people like me have dark brown eyes, but she has ice blue eyes instead. What does this mean?
hi so, i know that there are people who put bright blue implants in their eyes. i read about this operation five years ago, and as far as i know, it involves certain risks. i don't remember the name of the company, but if i find it, i'll add it here. also, some people with black skin tone are born with bright blue or green eyes, but this is really rare
I hate that we’ve pretty much unanimously agreed the light colored eyes are most beautiful, and white people are pretty much the only people with a large number of these colored eyes. Every romance novel is about staring into “his piercing blue eyes” or “her eyes of hazel green.” They’re meant to make someone “beautiful inside out” and “truly unique” rather than just yet another inherited trait from their privileged parents, and every other race or brown eyed person is just bland and flavourless. Or, if someone’s being nice, “approachable”. And then, when eye color changing surgery comes out, they all act so surprised when people risk being blind to do it. “I think eye lightening is ridiculous” yeah, and I bet you’ve gotten at least 1 compliment about your eyes in your life. The ugliest blue eyed dude gets laid. When your eyes are brown you feel invisible and left out.
You seriously don't believe that, do you? Sure, in general, light colored eyes are considered more beautiful than dark eyes, but everything else you said about being only "approachable" if you have brown eyes or "the ugliest blue eyed dude gets laid while a brown eyed person is invisible" is really reaching. Quite frankly, an ugly blue eyes dude has less of a chance of getting laid than an attractive brown eyed dude. Honest question. Who do you think has a better chance at getting laid, people with brown eyes like Ryan Reynolds, Kit Harington (Jon Snow from GOT), Jamie Dornan (from 50 Shades), Johnny Depp, Dave Franco, or a dude with blue eyes but chubby cheeks, pimples, and messed up teeth? Or let's look at females with brown eyes. Selena Gomez, Jessica Alba, J Lo, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Keira Knightley, Penelope Cruz, Hailee Steinfeld. Do you truly believe the people I mentioned above are just "approachable" or "invisible"?
Years ago I met someone who used contacts to regularly change their eye color. I felt that this constant hiding of who they are made them untrustworthy and simply avoided them. It was a visceral response. Later a woman I worked with played the same game with contacts for two or three weeks and it wasn’t fun, she didn’t like people’s response to her.I wonder if there will be a similar gut response to people who do this.
It's like why can't people just accept what they were born with. How is one able to look at their childhood photographs, looking at the baby them flaunting their natural features, after they get all these permanent dangerous procedures done on them and not burst out crying? And people are allowed to do what they want with their bodies but everyone just wants Blue eyes and blonde hair and light skin. It's so tiring. People who have them naturally are fine but why do you gotta change yourselves bro. This obsession with certain features just instills the idea that brown hair/eyes and dark skin is ugly and only white people with blonde hair and blue eyes are pretty.
I think in the future with crisper and the way the mayo clinic did it on already existing people they will probably be able to just genetically modify people to have whatever eye color they want and whatever gender they want. The plastic surgery industry will probably invest in that technology to incorporate it into their business catering model.
What makes me sad is just that you kind of know intuitively that it’s not blue eyed people who want brown eyes, it’s the opposite. Status always controls what we perceive as beautiful: there are so many historic examples of that. The fact that people will literally risk hurting their completely healthy bodies by removing pigment from their freaking eyes, just to look like the kind of person who has status, because that’s what this is really about. Blue eyes certainly are not inherently more beautiful than brown eyes, but they do symbolize status. Not blue eyes alone, but blue eyes in combination with pale skin, a healthy smile and expensive clothes will do the trick. I have read about dark skinned people trying to bleach their skin and ending up with third degree burns, and this is the same category in my mind. I understand why people do it, I just think it’s so sad that they feel the need to.
What are you even saying. You have light skinned people constantly risking skin cancer for a tan. Just don't go overboard with the generalisations. Brown eyes are found in every skin colour and people from every background can want to change their look. Lighter doesn't have to mean blue either. While I personally love my natural eye colour, some people just want to look different. Your comment comes across as incredibly patronising.
You don’t know that. You believe it, but you don’t know it. I have green eyes. I HATE them. I’ve wanted brown eyes as far back in my life as I can remember and I’m middle aged. I wore brown contacts for years, until I got PRK surgery and my eyes stopped tolerating them. Now I avoids red or purple tones in makeup, clothing and hair colors to avoid highlighting my eyes the color of baby crap.
You're talking total nonsense. I live in a country where people have naturally light skin and light hair and most people want to make it darker. Skin-darkening cosmetics are promoted at every step, people even dye their eyebrows darker. Dark skin is considered healthier and prettier here.
I believe that too. People have preferences and trends do exist, even if they can change over time. Currently, people prefer Taylor Swift to Mireille Mathieu. They prefer football to archery. They prefer jeans with straight legs to jeans with bell-bottoms legs. They prefer MrBeast to youtube channels about ancient Greek philosophers. Etc. Yes, there are some people who love ancient Greek philosophers, and Mireille Mathieu, and archery, etc. And ancient Greek philosophy is fascinating, and Mireille Mathieu was an amazing singer, and archery is a very impressive sport, etc. But still, the vast majority of people have other preferences. It's the same for eye color. Some are more popular than others.

No as laser destroys the melonocytes present in iris so no more melenin production

Photoablative iridoplasty is not new technology. We have been doing it for years with argon to treat angle related glaucoma. The major concerns around cosmetic photoablative iridoplasty using ND: Yag are 2 fold:
1. The effects of severe laser induced uveitis with pigment dispersion resulting in hypotony from chronicity.
2. Glaucoma in all its nuances
The studies you may have referenced are on the effect of ND: Yag on iris stroma and the rate of absorption by the the epithelium are all sound theoretically.

Everyone has blue eyes underneath. Blue eyes aren’t actually blue they’re transparent but the Raleigh scattering makes them appear blue from light like the same effect as the sky and the sea. Its pheomelanin and light brown and green eyes have that

I mean... blue eyes evolved in cold climates where there isn't much sun. It's just that the white race has spread its seed far and wide... so now white people are outside of the types of environments they evolved in. Plus globalism of course.

Hi Dr. Rupa. Thanks for the eye-opening video, haha.
So, since light-colored eyes reflect low pigmentation, is this characteristic related to the skin tone also?
For example, this black girl has a skin darker than mine, and most black people like me have dark brown eyes, but she has ice blue eyes instead.
What does this mean?

so, i know that there are people who put bright blue implants in their eyes. i read about this operation five years ago, and as far as i know, it involves certain risks. i don't remember the name of the company, but if i find it, i'll add it here.
also, some people with black skin tone are born with bright blue or green eyes, but this is really rare
I'm never allowing anyone to touch my eyes until necessary not even lasers idc how safe they may be
I hate that we’ve pretty much unanimously agreed the light colored eyes are most beautiful, and white people are pretty much the only people with a large number of these colored eyes.
Right!?
Everyone acts crazy shocked when eye changing procedures drop but brown eyes are treated like a straight up flaw by most people
My color is brown but our society doesn't accept my eyes so i want to change my i color how to possible it?
Interesting! I can see why it may bother some people.
People regularly change their hair color. Are all of them untrustworthy? What about all the people who wear make up or jewelry?

Hi Dr Rupa - I love all your videos - I live in Australia - I wish you were here - I would definitely attend become a patient - amazing - thank you
Thank you, Jenny! If you ever make it to Hawaii let me know!
Absolutely not I would not risk my eyes for anything….no money, no riches, no fame, nothing. nothing. my eyesight is the most precious thing I own.
Completely agree!
I think in the future with crisper and the way the mayo clinic did it on already existing people they will probably be able to just genetically modify people to have whatever eye color they want and whatever gender they want. The plastic surgery industry will probably invest in that technology to incorporate it into their business catering model.
You never know!
Didn’t know this was even possible! Seems like an utterly stupid risk to take.
Not worth it!
I love all eye colors!
I really thought about this after I came across some inheritance money!! As I was making plans to actually have it done, it just dawned one me....WHAT AM I THINKING???!!! Just accept yourself and be happy and do not look back!!
I feel its so dangerous. Lenses will be good option
For sure!
Actually I've being waiting all of my life for science to figure out how to do this, I always wanted to change my iris color! But if it's not super safe, I'm never going to do it..
Ya, not a great option sadly!
Perfect. I had fear you would sell of the the idea. Personally, I'd never give up my big brown eyes, but I know some people who would give up theirs.
Brown eyes are beautiful too!
Same! I have brown eyes👁👁, and some people told me I'd look better with blue. But I don't care. My brown eyes get better protection from UV than blue or green gets!😇
People change gender, facial structure, eye color, hair color... Why do you say "give up theirs"?
This is unrelated but I'm obsessed with your hair colour 😍
Thank you!!!
Does pigment ever come back after these lasers?
Most likely not!
@@DrRupaWong But if the color is melanin, can't it re-darken from sun exposure? Like sun tanning?
Do light brown eyes turn dark brown when people go outside in the sun? No
If you want lighter eyes just wear contacts. If you do the laser that’s fine too but what about long term potential dangers? Best to prudent with something as precious as eyesight. Buy colored contacts. So much easier
For sure!
❤
I always weared light colored contact lenses.
@@carmenirizarryfeliciano8427Have you ever had problems with the lens?
This makes me wonder if my light eyes would be less sensitive if I had darker eyes
Here is a video I have done on this - ua-cam.com/video/188f45ID-kI/v-deo.html Let me know what you think in the comments!
The dr in the video straightening her hair and dyed it red when you do both together it damage the structure of the hair and she knows but she did it because she liked how she looked no harm with that in majority of the ppl so the eye color and breast implants and etc everything has side effects that can be managed with other treatments
Not the same at all! Hair can grow back and is not essential for basic living needs!
@@NiaA789hair can grow back yes though the chemicals used in bleach or perming can have dangerous side effects for health too
I just read about it on google and searched it directly on youtube until I found this video, I really want my real eye color back they were green until they became brown because of the toxic Roaccutane capsules for acne😢
i am not interested in doing this, but i saw it on tiktok so i wanted to do some “research” in how safe it actually is… all the sites that provide this procedure say it’s 100% safe (obviously) but i really feel that they are just saying this because they wanna keep their costumers (which i understand)
But i wanna know (if you know) do they make you sign anything if you were to do such a procedure, as in we are not responsible if you go blind or anything serious happens. Like do they know the harm that could cause this or are they just like okey let’s do it and get that bag.
Also could this make you go blind? because i feel like the laser must me some sort of trauma on the eyes.
Loved this video and it answered so many questions i had !💗
The procedure itself is safe, now will you lose vision have blurred vision etc is a different story
You sign wavers for ANY type of surgery from appendectomy to heart transplant that there is a risk of death. I cna't see them not having patients sign a wavier stating that you are aware there is a risk, however minimal, of vision loss or whatever accompanying the procedure.
Yes, they make you sign a waiver that they are not responsible for if you have any problems or damage to your vision
Dark brown eyes here and I’m sensitive to light.
Everyone has different sensitivity levels. You might just be extra sensitive :)
Ive been looking back and forth for years for a vid like this, cause i loooove having colored eyes hahahahahaah! Especially a smokey grey color. But finally some answers, i didnt even think that lasers could be real or even bright ocular but they really are and people do really get them! Thanks Dr .Rupa!
So happy I could answer your question! Sorry it isn't what you wanted to hear. Hopefully soon!
Ideas for upcoming video: I would love to see options for adults who still have amblyopia and want to treat it with new interventions.
Thanks so much! Make sure you are subscribed and click the bell so you see when I post it. Be on the look out!
you know, personally whenever I stay a loong time near the sea, lets say a month or two for some reason my honey green eyes look dark green, but after a while it returns back to normal, and its not only me who notices that, my parents do too.
Interesting!!
You’re secretly a mermaid
So I have a skin allergy to the sun and photosensitivity. I do everything possible to sheild from all sun exposure since I was around 12. Over the years my hazel eyes have lightened significantly and now they are a grey green. My question is, should I be concerned about the pigment clogging my eyes even though this happened naturally and gradually?
