"I know most of you hardcore johnnies are probably screaming at me or clicked off because I haven't talked about the secret meaning of James' left bollock or whatever" This line made me laugh out loud omg, pure gold. Really refreshing to watch someone talk about Silent Hill in a light-hearted and comedic way, as usually videos discussing these games are pretty somber (as I'm sure you're painfully aware) Looking forward to hearing you cover the others one day and eventually... hopefully... maybe even the remake???
I'd forgotten just how hard Maria goes in on James when he finds her in the hospital. He's all half-ass genuine after he realizes she isn't Mary, so he's all like, "Oh....Maria. It's you....Thought you were..... someone else. Anyway, really cool you're still alive." His tone is one of a man telling someone in passing that they have a cool shirt lol. I've always loved how Maria just fucking explodes on him, that voice actress really kills it throughout the game!
Said it in another vid Mary + Laura, is well yeah… perhaps. But James response, imo, shows he tried his best ta just have eyes for Mary even in tha last days
The cutscene with Angela at the top of the stairs always hit an emotional soft spot for me. The music framing the scene, the weird warmth of the flames that feels more spiritual than physical, it makes everything feel that much more tragic. Angela is my favorite character, so much so that I named a World of Darkness character after her. Fantastic video as usual, and I do like the fact that you pointed out how a lot of interpretations/reviews of SH2 turn into very personal experiences. I’m curious to see what you’ll work on next!
I full on fucking belly laughed when you were talking about how Silent Hill would be made in today’s gaming landscape from 42:16 - 42:45. I also had never seen Born from a Wish and was pretty taken aback by the extra context given. I adore SH2, lovely video as always Scott!
Really glad you picked up on the genius that the Historical Society level was where the game reaches its peak (or trough i suppose); every descending staircase and every empty hole the player jumps down... It's like a direct link into James' unravelling psyche. The difference from movies being that you the player get to experience it first hand with him. Masterful really.
@@ScottsGameAsylum Kudos to you as well for using so much Killer7 music in your videos, another rare psychological masterpiece that will always stay with me
Coming back to this to say the remake looks far better than most would think (Aside the frothy mouths who hate anything that isn't specifically tailored to them) But we'll really find out in a week If they succeeded or not, looking good from some folks who got to play it early, praising the sound design, the VA work, the slightly improved but not quite overhauled combat, and the sheer dread and oppressive atmosphere. As a diehard fan, I think they at least deserve a chance.
One thing you brought up, that being how relatable the game is to others, is coming from an actual place. As depressing and how heavy a couple of the topics are in the game, it's comforting to dwell in the game just by the setting and sound by itself, almost as if the game is expressing feelings for you as it paints out those emotions. 'glad to hear a critical review of sh2 👍
Mate I'm super glad to see you weighing in on this one. It would be easy to say "it's been done", but there's every chance this will be someone's first SH2 video! Cracking watch, didn't expect to see my name is shining Comic Sans at the end 😅
Silent Hill 2 is one of those games like Deus Ex that people smarter/cooler than me have been, I do think it's probably time to give it a go. Appreciate the self-awareness and the earnestness in here. It's not easy to talk about a game that seemingly everyone has talked about but I definitely think you added your own vibe to the pile in a good way.
Thanks for another great video! Silent Hill 2 is one of those games that I've liked and respected for what it was trying to do but also thought maybe it's been a bit overblown as to what it really is and seeing so many people approach it with almost a religious respect that it can do no wrong and every moment is perfectly crafted and executed when there are parts that are very much just "just throw a boss fight here because we're making a video game in the early 2000s," I started to grow a bit of an annoyance for it (and I felt guilty about it). Watching this video made me remember that it IS a good game, but not a PERFECT game and that's why I like it. It feels very human in the way it's flawed but also the way it really makes you feel a strange sickness and uneasiness and sadness and well, all sorts of gross feelings some games really fail to do. Also, thanks for covering the Maria side story because I've only played it once and I forgot how much I adored the atmosphere of the Baldwin house and the whole back and forth between Maria and Ernest. Wondering if it will be included in the remake is providing me with a morbid curiosity and dread all at once.
Perfect games are boring, If we had a world where every piece of art was unmatched it would be boring. Flaws is what makes an unforgettable experience.
All signs point to very bad things coming to this franchise, between the remake and its the upcoming movie adaptation. And I fear too few will be smart enough to see it.

Yeah it was fun to finally talk about it. And yeah I'll get to the others sooner rather than later.

It's easily the best "level" in any horror game

I mean Townfall is being done by No Code, who has made some interesting games and that trailer for F looks fun.
Still, the best way to experience this game is on PS2 original hardware, possibly on a CRT screen.
Nah HD collection while suffering a concussion is best
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
