How to Get Neckties Ready for Sewing

  • There are lots of fun and colorful projects to make with neckties, and it’s easy to get started. This quick little video demonstrates how to take apart a necktie using a seam ripper (a sharp little pair of sewing snips may be used instead).
    The end result is a long piece of necktie fabric, a long skinny soft interlining (and sometimes a silky one, too), a long piece of thread, a manufacturer label, and sometimes a fabric loop. All of those pieces are useful in a whole wealth of creative projects (even the thread!), so save everything if you have the storage space. I’ll share plenty of ideas with you in future videos.
    Do be sure to wash your red neckties separately from the others - that dye seems especially prone to bleeding and may discolor other fabrics.

    You mention using the lining fabric to make rugs. Could you share more info on that?

      Did I really? It sounds like an interesting idea, but one I haven't tried.

    I have a favorite tie I would like to appliqué onto a scarf or T-shirt. Any suggestions? Like should I wash it first, use wonder under, zig zag the edges, etc? Any ideas would be appreciated 😊

      Hi! This is an interesting idea. I would definitely wash the necktie first before using it as an applique. This will allow the necktie to shrink (if it's going to) and let you see if the color will bleed. It's always easiest to match fabric types, so most neckties will work better sewn to something similar (like a soft woven scarf, as opposed to a stretchy knit t-shirt). The edge finish is your preference. Fold under the necktie edges for a cleaner look, or zig zag to let them soften and fray. Good luck and have fun! I'd love to hear how your project turns out. Nancy

      Hi Dyann, How exciting! This sounds like a lovely project. I've never made a duvet cover myself, and look forward to hearing more about your project. I encourage you to trust your own artistic eye and sewing experience, relax and enjoy the process. It truly sounds stunning. Nancy

      Oh Evie, you caught me. It completely slipped my mind that I was going to make videos about that, and I went off in another direction! I made myself a note to let you know when more necktie videos are ready. (Heads up that it will probably be awhile.) Thanks for the reminder! Nancy

      Hi Evie, I just remembered that I do have one video for a project that makes use of the necktie linings and labels. It's "How to Make a Necktie Label Bracelet" ua-cam.com/video/xBEAAxbcqyg/v-deo.html Nancy

    I'm planning on making a duvet cover from 100% silk ties. Everything I have ever known or found on the internet says NOT to wash silk in water. Are the ties you are prepping 100% silk?

    • @NancyGamon
      @NancyGamon  Рік тому

      hi Elizabeth, that's a great question. I think the best rule of thumb is to clean the neckties (or any fabric) the same way you would clean the finished product. I want to be able to throw my creations in the washing machine, so I do prewash neckties (including 100% silk ones) in water before sewing with them.
      How are you planning to clean your duvet cover? If you want to be able to wash it, then you might care to test wash one necktie, and see if you care for the results, before making a decision about the whole lot. If you're planning to take it to the dry cleaners, then you may be able to get away with not cleaning the ties before you use them. Hope that helps. Nancy

    What is the best way to get some ties made?

    • @NancyGamon
      @NancyGamon  Рік тому

      Most major pattern companies sell instructions for making neckties or bowties. You might try asking for help at your local fabric store. If you're looking for someone to make ties for you, a local sewing guild may be able to connect you with a person who does custom sewing.
