There's real passion coming through from Chris here. He might be known for thrashing supercars, but there's just as much love for the humble 2CV. PROPER petrolhead 👍

YES he is the reason old Top Gear is doing well IMO. The future is in this trio, not the old, washed up Clarkson and his team

LG Work, i know you are being facetious, but the Multipla pretended to be this revolutionary vehicle, while the 2CV became a revolutionary vehicle on its own. Many people lovingly look back on the 2CV, even my parents here in Holland. Multipla, not so much.

The old Top Gear say you must have owned an Alfa to be a proper petrolhead.
The new Top Gear seems to say otherwise. :)

The 2CV was basically designed in the late 30's and went into production later because of WW2, so it was a bit outdated. But Citroen never designed it to compete with Rolls Royce, Jaguar or Ford. The 2CV was built for rural areas with very little infrastructure from the start where there were few paved roads and even less service stations. To compensate for this they made the car as rugged as possible, gave it a very simple engine and installed everything with nuts and bolts. You can literally take this entire car apart with one or two tools. And the suspension is superb. I think it's almost impossible to tip over because the suspension has so much give.

  • @thezanzibarbarian5729

One of the main points about the design of the 2CV, Chris Harris has not even mentioned.
The wheel track of the 2CV is the same as the wheel track of the horse drawn carts in France. So the average French farmer could swap his horse drawn cart, get a 2CV and not have any problems about driving it on any tracks in his fields, where he had previously driven his horse drawn cart. The 2CV's tyre's would fit perfectly.

The Zanzibarbarian The ingeneers of Citröen were realy thinking 'out of the box'. The engine was designed by a sport car engines designer from the Talbot racing team. That's why its block is made of aluminium, flat synhronous boxer, has not water cooling, and has onboard brakes (not attached to the wheels). Front wheel propulsion of course (in a 1939 design!) when most 'cheap' car are rear propulsion ones until today.
That model came with inertial shock absorbers called 'battants' attached to each wheel. A device never seen on any other car : It's a mass (a hammer) in a can floating in oil and hold down by a spring. When the road is bumpy, the hammer creates a delay in the motion of the wheel and keeps the wheel on the road. The way doors are attached to the car is very unique too.

I first encountered the 2cv on the roads and streets of France in the early 1960s, when I was on active duty in Northern France. I never tired of watching them happily bounding along, sounding like sewing machines scurrying from one place to another.

I have really fond memories of collecting the christmas tree with my dad and brother in his 2CV, roll the roof off, put the tree in the front seat resting on the bar in the middle of the roof. Wrapped up warm it was the start of christmas every year.

The old man had a 2CV and when I got my license I use to drive it to the skate parks in Melbourne, Aus and down the Great Ocean Road surfing. Looked very funny with 4, 18 year olds driving this into a skate parks or surfboards sticking out of the roof... Such a fun car to drive

2cv will always be one of my favourite cars, they sound wonderful, so raspy, and they look superb, even more so now that most modern family cars look alike these days, and Chris's 2cv is such a classy looking car, aged to perfection, i might have to buy one one day, who knows!

    • @Munkenba
      @Munkenba 6 років тому +2

As an owner of one, they're even fun in traffic jams, it's so damn narrow you can really piss off big bmw and mercedes owners by threading it through gaps that no one else can. 0-60 sucks but 0-30 is surprisingly fast, if you need to get ahead of someone at the lights or join an oncoming lane in town, it's perfectly capable. Great fun in the countryside too obviously, but really great in cities.

So true. MORE SMILES PER MILE.
Like having a cute puppy dog. Everyone's friend.
Totally Citroen 2CV6 addicted since I bought my first new 2CV6 RHD when working for a year in the UK.
As I was bringing a new RR SS II back to Australia tax free (93% after 15 months), I could not get a second import license. 2 English friends helped me pull it apart to ship as second-hand spare parts and 2 Aussie Citroen Car Club friends helped me reassemble it in Sydney.
People quite incredulous to see it pull up at a boat launching ramp in Sydney in the bright blue 2CV towing a bright yellow 8 ft long 2 cylinder 50hp Dynafoil - miniature hydrofoil and trailer behind.
Pre jet ski days in 1981 the Californian Dynafoil had 21 hp more than the 29hp 2CV6.
I then got a new 1982 RHD 2CV6 Charleston which I drove for 15 months around Europe, UK, Ireland, Canada and USA before shipping home to Australia..
Never selling my final RHD 1990 2CV6 Charleston which I had in Europe for 3 months to get an import license. Now done 185,000 miles and have a Big Bore 652 cc Burton 2CV engine fitted.
2023 is the 75th Anniversary of the first 2CV.

Most people don't know that this is one of the most iconic cars ever, as it is a popular french family car and can have its entire body removed with one wrench and about 30 minutes. It also has a very long production run and is used to this day as a cheap rental car.

In many ways the R4 is a newer, updated 2CV. Both are simple, both are very intelligent designs, both are perfectly suited for their respective times as a functional, easily-repairable vehicle that also has a dash of style.

Renault was nationalised in the late 1940s and by the mid to late 50s the success of the 2CV mandated Renault should replace its rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive 4CV with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout for its successor. The quickest, easiest way to get the car to market was to headhunt Citroën engineers who had worked on the 2CV and DS. Those engineers took all of the technical knowledge developed at Citroën over to Renault and the R4 was very quickly brought to market. The then MD of Citroën wrote to his counterpart at Renault to complain and threaten legal action. Renault replied by counter-threat-If you sue Renault then you're effectively suing the French state and the government would ensure that Citroën would be crushed by any means at its disposal. Citroën quietly dropped the claim. The Renault 4 is a Citroën with a diamond badge rather than a double chevron. That's why I love the R4 almost as much as the 2CV.

    What I don't understand.
The Trabant from the GDR had better seats, more power, was more car than that thing...
But still most of the people think that the 2CV is a cool and cute car, but the Trabant is just... ridiculous.

    • @valentinexristov8915
      @valentinexristov8915 6 років тому +2

The Trabant had nothing better. I know this because It's dirty communist car and my country used to be under socialism. Trabant had bad welds, bad shapes,It was mostly dangerous due to no safety features (None in fact). Even seat belts were added after the EU laws restricted it but fit quite well and they were practically useless. Trabant had more power, that's true, but it had a smaller than some bikes by the time,so I wouldn't call it better or more powerful really. You also had to put special mixture of gasoline and something other which I honestly can't remember :D I would suggest You to watch DougDeMuro's video for Trabant to what it's like. But trust Me,Citroen were way way better than this 'car'! :)

I know the trabant... ich don't need to watch a video from him.
I don't say, that the Trabant is a good car... but it is better, than the 2CV. Thats what I'm saying.
The 26BHP weren't really much, but still more than 12,5BHP...
And the 1:50 mixture is no problem for me. I own 3 MZs (and maybe you know, what kind of bikes they are, if you life in a sucialism country)

By all standarts,Trabant can be called one of the worst cars ever made (It has a nice look, but tech part is pretty bad). I guess the Trabby could've been a better car if the GDR economics wasn't that atrocious compared to the FRG. Altought,26HP is twice as the 2CV,It just failed in a lot of situations...It had hard time climbing some hills,Winter times were a challenge and so on and so on. That's not to say the 2CV was much better (I suppose,I haven't seen one) But I'm pretty sure the Frenchies did much better job assuming their economics were running much better at the time being. In terms of cars I would always choose French over German because german cars are pure marketing and hype... They have poor reliability, hard suspension and they are pretty costy to buy and maintain. Just my two cents

The Trabant does not have the movie history, the shapes, the handling. This car is from an animation movie the way it turns. The production has been long and the car had many different iterations. The technology is briliant on it. The suspention work was so good.

Horrendous build quality and poor engineeriñg are not terms normally attached to the 2ĈV but always attached to the Trabby.
Not even in the same league.

Balls man , don’t and won’t believe he likes it . The only reason he says he likes it is because old Topgear heated with a passion and they are giving a dig at the old trio , you watch series 3 of The grand tour and they will say a certain car is brilliant just because new Topgear don’t like it .

Nah, this car has a long lasting cult following.
Chris can be one of those guys, and he seems like one of those guys, as he explained as well, that likes machinery that works. It is primitive, it works, it did what it had to do and people love them for it.

The 2CV is a special car, every true petrol head loves them, and if you ever had the chance to drive one, or even sat in one as a passenger, you'd know how a 2CV will always make you smile from ear to ear and despite all it's imperfections you'd love it...I wish my father who had one in the 80's still had his, i'd gladly take it

If it had been restored to a high standard I'd be impressed. As it is now it's a pile of junk.
So many classics are dying because of owners like this who take no pride in their vehicle and run them into the ground.

The chassis is new and engine is healthy - the rust is surface rust only. This car is healthy.

Ah yes. Owners who leave the car in cooled storage and never drive it are so much better than owners who drive their cars on the road.
Except that's the opposite of the truth.

No pride? Did you listen to Chris? Perfect cars are very cool but this 2cv it's about something different. It has the original paint and it has live a long life. It's like havin battle scars

I guess you're one of those "Mint condition in unopened package" kinda types.
Chris bought this car as a very used car, and keeps it in that condition, not refurbishing it.
He is not giving it a make over, but instead keeps it in a natural state.
He clearly loves the car, so i'm sure he will not let it waste away.

Patina/original paint on classic cars adds values and often makes them more valuable than restored/resprayed cars.
