It was commissioned by Sir William Jolliffe, an MP from an important local family; he was a big admirer of the monarch as the 'avenger of liberty' and wanted it as a kind of memorial to his own work as an MP and left money for it's erection. It originally stood outside the Jolliffe family mansion elsewhere in the town, but after that was pulled down in the late 18thC, it was moved to the Square. It was originally gilded and, consequently, a nearby pub was named the 'Golden Horse Inn', but I think this building no longer exists and is not one of the three pubs that are/were still around the Square ('The Market' has now been converted to a shop).

Lived there for seven years. Nice little town but was never told why they had a statue of William of Orange in the town center.
