I learned the reason Soyeon named the song "Nxde" is because so when some "korean men" search "aideul nxde" which means "women or child on nxde" then g-idle would show up instead.
the fact that they had to do this is so scary. eternally at awe at how they used their artistry and position as a famous idol to at least cover some of those results by showing this song with That lyrics and meaning.

I think one of the most impactful lines for me in the song is "I'm born nude" cause it really is just like... why is it sexual? Everyone is born this way, why make it sexual?
And I also think Shuhua's line right after saying "The pervert is you" really solidifies that meaning. Shuhua's delivery is also really good there because it gives off the judgemental, almost disgusted vibe as if she is looking down upon you for thinking that way.
The line is actually meant to be "you’re the pervert" and was mistranslated as "you’ve got a dirty mind."
@@almendriaflorentino I would translate it (변태는 너야) as "The pervert is you" with the verbal emphasis on "you". Not just because it is close literally, but because it matches the structure. Given the premise that someone is ascribing a negative sexual connotation to the speaker's body, they reply "I'm born nude / The pervert is *you*", or my body is in its natural state, the mental experience you have with regard to it is yours and your responsibility. Non-native though.

Yuqi’s “speak out” at the end with her deep voice really hit me

Feel like Minnie’s opening line sums up what they were trying to say. She says “slightly dumb in the way I talk, but I have a sexy figure” notice she says the way she talks is dumb, but she’s NOT dumb and she’s putting on character that she knows is expected on her.
Plus "yeppi yeppi" means something akin to "pretty pretty" or "cutie cutie", based on the word "yeppeo" or 예뻐
Yuqi has one of the most unique voices in the industry. It is so rich, and full. I love it soooo much. And I love that they use that contrast with the other, lighter timbres in the group.
Yeah!!! Me too. Her voice is so powerful and meets very well with the other members.
It's not just about how unique her voice is. She knows how to use it, soyeon knows how to use it. Something I stick to and keep repeating is that a unique voice is shit if you don't know how to use it. Minnie and yuqi have very unique voices and it's safe to say that they belong in G Idle, I can't imagine them in any other setting. Soyeon is truly a genius

something i find really interesting is how soyeon used classical instruments (or samples of said instruments lol) to enhance the natural tones in the member's voices. the croony yet warm string instrument (can't tell if it's a viola or violin) behind miyeon and shuhua's voice during the prechorus, how the instrumentation is light behind minnie's intro since she has the lightest timbre, the muted trumpet highlighting and not hiding the natural brassiness in soyeon's voice (and the unmuted brass instrument extended her note 'nude' before the last chorus was so fun), and the low brass hits in tandem with yuqi's 'puk'. i always loved how gidle's music always highlights their vocal tones and works it into the perfect parts.
an advantage of writing for themselves while other groups just get what the composers did thinking in "generic" vocals
I really love how you guys explained the purpose of using Carmen's habanera & that distorted violin sound are deliberate & adds on to the meaning of the whole song. Because it was not obvious like the Marilyn Monroe & Banksy references, atleast not to me. It makes me appreciate the song & Soyeon more than I already did.
Also I love how you guys praised the contrasting vocal timbres of the members, especially Miyeon cause she doesn't get enough compliments for her beautiful voice.

Her voice is wonderful, but since she shares the track with Yuqi and Minnie which have unique voices in kpop, plus Soyeon's rapping and singing abilities and now ShuHua chameleonic skill, she gets the shortest part of the praise. Also lets not forget Soojin has a great characteristical voice, All Star Cast

IIRC it was also the theme that can be heard when they're introduced before one of their stages. They made it clear the song was a reference/nod to it.

One of the reasons why IDLE sampling Habanera for Nxde is more meaningful than other songs is because there is reason. Habanera is a song about a woman who wants to claim autonomy on her own sexuality, and the choice to choose who she wants rather than being a bargaining chip. Nxde being a song that rejects oversexualisation of women correlates with the message of Habanera.
I know this sounds pretentious, but other songs that sampled classical pieces like this don't nearly give as much homage to the original compositions as IDLE did 🤷♀️
They actually got an opera singer to sing Habanera for one of their performance. It also correlates to the message of their songs too.
I think Soyeon is taking the group in a rising artist path that I don't see in many girlgroups nowadays. She was able to give (G)I-DLE a control over their artistic perspective so early in their career and I'm super proud to see them being able to do something like this (I follow Soyeon since she was just a young little rapper on Produce 101). One of my fave songs/comebacks of the year for sure

can we appreciate the fact that just by choosing "Nxde" as the title track name (G)Idle was able to single-handedly cover the results for both CP search results and "n*de idol" search results in korea, as the way those searches get worder and spelled in korean inevitably lead them to Nxde the song by (G)Idle the group insteadh

I LIVE for Jason's cultural commentary moments. He just nails it, every time! (There were so many insightful comments from everyone in this video, but I just feel like Jason gets it SO often I wanted to highlight it ^^)
I still think it's so sad they didn't translate the second to last lyric of the song correctly in the subtitles.
In the subs it says "You've got a dirty mind" but "byeontaeneun neoya" actually directly translates to "The pervert is you"
The fact that sooyeon wrote this song to overlaps the browsing word for child p*rn (in korean aideru n*de) where child in korean is aideru which is the same pronunciation of their group (G)idle = aideru. So that whenever there is someone browse child p*rn / aideru n*de the one who will pops up is their song this song (G)idle n*de. That’s sooooo GENIUS and so thoughtful. Love her sooooo much

GIDLE is one of the best kpop group in the history of the industry and people are not ready for this conversation yet. What Soyeon does and the power she's gathering on being free to creat what she wants gives to kpop a new autenc colors that we've being dying to see more. Can't wait to see what they'll be doing next time.

I love how purposeful the instrumentation is. Everything evokes a peepshow style burlesque performance, from the Carmen sample (I feel like it’s used a lot in movie scenes with burlesque dancing, or at least my brain associates it with that for some reason) to the styling. But then the sample is distorted, almost as a way to show that the desire to turn everything into a peepshow is distorted? I still dislike the nasal tone Soyeon takes and would have preferred backing off a tiny bit, but the entire song isgenius. I also super appreciate that Shuhua’s vocals seem to be getting appreciated more in their songs recently. She’s capable, and she really seems to be the much needed bridge between Yuqi and Minnie/Miyeon color wise.
(G)I-Dle are just unique because they themself are deeply involved in their music 💜.

I think during MAMA 2022, they paid tribute to carmen as well by letting a professional opera singer sing the lyrics of the habanera before they started the song nude
Yuqi's voice is something I'll never be able to get over it, she always gives me goosebumps, such an amazing voice! What I liked about Nxde apart of the amazing message (nude doesn't mean sexual, that association between being nude and sex it's in the mind of people) it's that every voice is so unique and they really knew how to deliver the song in the best way thanks to their different colors, tones and textures

one of the things i love about (g)i-dle is how every layer of what they create and present always has a purpose, whether it's visually or auditorily. and that creates such a beautiful & symbolic picture for us, the audience, to enjoy. a message that we'll always remember.

Soyeon most definitely composed the song to sound '"in your face" to ironically contrast the meaning of the song. A song titled nude would normally use a minimal, stripped back instrumental to convey the idea of being nude, however Soyeon flipped this on its head to prove how female nudity has become a provocative, flashy means to satisfy men (strip shows, burlesque shows, p*rn etc). Nudity for women is not just our bodies that we exist in, it's a commodity, a profit, a show etc.
This comeback was such a slay. The song had to grow on me a bit, but now, I just LOVE it. And the concept… amazing. It’s so so good.
And once again, this channel proves that G-Idle deserves the compliments for nailing this era. Antis on Twitter can say whatever, but if actual professionals, who don’t have a bias, and who KNOW what they are talking about are full of praise… well, then, we know the deal 🌚

I've been wanting to write an essay on all of the symbolism in Nxde, with the use of Carmen, addressing *someone* (the audience? A character in the song? Some third party?) in the second person, the obvious messaging of the oversexualization of idols. There's so much thematic analysis that could be made.

'Quel scandal' hahaha I did not realize he spoke french until I watch the video a second time. I really loved the message of the song, women should be able to have any type of body and not be judged for it. Which is very ironic when you think of the world they live in - of plastic surgery, crazy diets, etc. Not easy to be a public figure in K-pop.
Another reference that wasn't mentioned was Soyeon's intro;

Ngl, I was really hoping you'd do that song...cause I'm a huge Idle fan (and I can tell Umu really liked the song too!). I'm surprised no one mentioned electro swing, because that's what I felt the instrumentation was based on. These sorts of violon sounds can be heard a lot in electro swing music (even if Nxde isn't electro swing). Also, some people say that Soyeon at the beginning was meant to sound like Betty Bop!
