  • World's Wildest White Water Rafting in Zambezi River amongst long and violent rapids created by millions of cubic meters of water thundering down the 100 m Victoria Falls. Nineteen huge rapids with the largest number of Grade 5's, some biggest in the world.
    The adventure starts right at the foot of the Victoria Falls. During the day you charge down big drops, massive waves, devilish whirpools and adrenaline joyrides in the 100-200 m deep Batoka Gorge. The names of the rapids say it all: Stairway to Heaven (and Highway to Hell), Overland Truck Eater, Commercial Suicide (grade 6 rapid not safe to raft throug bu being portered around), Devil's Toilet Bowl, The Mother, The Muncher. But, the most famous of all is the notorious rapid #18 "Oblivion" with a massive wave flipping the rafts like toys. That was our fate, too, just watch what happenned in the end of the video!

    so many great rafting videos online but theyall have loud annoying music that drowns out the roar of the river which is what makes it so exciting

    Can someone tell me. If you do happen to fall off what are your chances for survival? Would you almost certainly die?

    • @TimoHeinaro
      @TimoHeinaro  7 років тому +8

      99+ % survival but you can swallow a lot of water and at worst spend quite a bit of time underwater (called downtime). The activity is definitely extreme and not meant for fainthearted but as long as healthy and fit you don't need any prior experience to join the action. Fitness is actually required more for going down to the gorge and especially climbing back. Gorge is more than 100 m deep and the climb steep.
      You can choose a more demanding paddle version or join along an easier version where raftmaster is piloting through the rapids by rowing the raft. Even in the latter alternative you are not just a mere passenger but you must participate actively in distributing the weight inside the raft - which is great fun, too.
      Although Zambezi is probably world's wildest commercially run rapids the high water volume makes it a lot safer than many other rivers in same category. One may quickly think that high amount of water makes it unsafe but the truth is that the water flow keeps you better off the obstacles.
      The operators are very experienced and raft masters have to practise for years before they can even think of getting such a responsible job. Safety kayaks always accompany the rafts. You must wear lifejackets which have double buouancy to requirements elsewhere plus helmets of course. See more details in my comment below.

      Zambezi rafting guides must go through a very long and strenuous training before piloting crews. They know the river - and how to hold on to the safety lines;-) As you can see from the video I was holding on in the front until the violent whirpool simply sucked me in to a tumble. Watch my sandal appearing from the whitewater before the current sucks me quite a distance downstream. Can't remember how much downtime I got but luckily remembered to take a good breath before falling to the river;-)

      We shot through total 18 rapids. Six of them are Grade 5, one even 5/6 (which means porterage). Grading has been done by British Canoe Society.
