- United had just been relegated, the dressing room had to be exorcised and the Doc needed some fresh blood to rejuvenate his waining side and keep his promise, to get United back up where they belong at the first attempt - so what to do...?
From a tip off from a footballing great, he went to Tranmere and bought an unknown Scouser... Not really a United story but that Scouser was Steve Coppell and he showed himself to be the most hardworking and talented of The Doc's exciting young team.
Check out the story of a United legend who made 5 Cup finals in generally mediocre sides and whose wing play won him England recognition and a World Cup Final appearance, before having to retire early due to injury - Discover or simply reminisce about Steve Coppell!

It is shamefull that Coppell is not included in the list of Uniteds great #7's. A scandal. Still on the right-wing of my alltime United 11 of the players I have seen play. Arguably the most underrated player in our history.
Spot on but I see him in the conversation more than not. deserves his place, thats for sure!
Mr 8 out of 10!!! An absolute legend. Its the fans that decide and anybody that saw him was a privileged fan.
What an absolute standard bearer for what players should be like.
An icon.
@@podgerthefirst couldn't agree more, the model pro. Just one tackle and all over in his prime, tragic.
Loved him my first hero
My first UTD hero. Loved the man, wing wizard.
Me too. Great days under the Doc. If he could only keep it in his pants. Bit unfair but what a post Cup side that couldve been
First rate number 7, worthy of the number.
Brilliant player, one of my heroes, always put in 100%
Steve Coppell & Gordon Hill where the great wingers of the swashbuckling Tommy Docherty era of the 70s.
Before my time but Reds around in that era love these two, and the likes of Pancho and Buchan. Must've been something else.
My favourite player as a united-daft child. I always wanted to play right-wing and always wore no7 until he started wearing 11 in 1981
Yeah, cover the number change in the video :). My older best mate loved Coppell but I missed out on him by a year or so.
Keraia ⚡️⚡️ ⚡️❤️
What a finisher! Everyone goes on about his wing play, which is obvious, but he had 2 great feet. What a servant and professional, so unlcuky.
Another one before I were born but looked like a crackign little player. Great workrate, something the current crop severely miss... Another great vid mate.
Cheers mate. Yep, great professional.
Well said .. makes Antony look like a conference player
Not even that mate...
Definitely, brilliant player that never stopped running. Could have been down to him being an early adopter of energy bars. According to funny story told by Norman Whiteside.
Steve Coppell was my hero fantasy player loved your summary of how he played. Hope you don’t mind but I’ve used part of your clip in a video of mine we’ve just started our own United channel ‘United With Dave’ take a look I’d love to know your thoughts 👍
Sure, good luck, a mention in the description is all I ask. I'll check it out.
Wow forgot coppell retired at 28 proper wing wizard he was special to me cause the older guys use to call me steve coppell cause I used to roast guys lol
Mr reliable, could've been part of Fergie's plans had things had been different...
My dad always used too talk about Coppell, thought he was really smart because he had degree. Cant believe hes a Scouser and a United legend. I no we have Roo too but he's a blu e at least. Some cracking goals there, thans for making this.
Thanks mate, really enjoyed putting this together; alovely, determined, no-nonsense player.
If I'd to choose between Rooney and Coppell, against all fans from the nineties I'd pick Coppell every single time.
@@podgerthefirst I find it hard to go against Rooney in his prime, he was something else. Plus, Coppell was slightly before my time, you had the fortune to see him play. Can't argue with the video footage though, the winger was an amazing talent.
@@podgerthefirst Roo for me but not a bad chocie whoever.
Just thought I'd have another look, shit that you've had to cut bits due to copywright I;m guessin
Yep, I was very surprised as usually, if you have 'pre-Premier League/Champions League' era footage, there isn't much of an issue with copyright. Got me on a couple of obscure pieces of '70's footage unfortunately.
