Awesome job with the interview. I'm one of those people Colin says don't exist because, in the sense that I've started buying more games literally after getting Game Pass. The reason is simple: playing a bunch of different games on the service I normally wouldn't play made me start looking into more obscure titles that aren't in the service, good deals, or even games that are in the service but I want to have anyway. Over the past 3 years I have bought over 200 games, and that was largely due to how using GP has changed my gamer profile. The difference is that I don't buy games on release anymore, so my experience with 'same year' releases is normally limited to the service. I've been listening to Colin for a while now. I generally like his delivery but he honestly seems to struggle to understand why people would do different things for different reasons in the gaming space. Which is a bit shortsighted for someone in his line of work.

I disagree with both of your takes on music in games. I think it’s something more subconscious. It sets mood, creates tension, fear, happiness. I don’t think you can compare it to gameplay and say one is more important to the other. I would are argue music can augment gameplay. I remember playing SSX tricky back in the day, and the music playing while you are rocketing down the mountain, but when you take a huge jump in the air, the music would go silent and all you could hear was the ambient air swishing by your ears, amazing.
I apologize for the VGM essay... I really don’t think you can have a blanket answer to the music question. It depends on your values and interests in gaming, consequently, the games you gravitate towards, and at times on a case-by-case basis depending on the game you’re playing and what you expect and want from it. Shooters and puzzle games will probably differ in music direction and implementation from rhythm games and RPGs. But I wouldn’t necessarily put music above all other facets of all games. For fun, a blanket answer imo would be they’re all equal because we don’t have a specific game or genre as the subject. For most games on PlayStation, you could probably put graphics, gameplay, story, etc. over the score, sure. Usually though, and somewhat to your guys' points, a game's gameplay and graphics have to be decent enough for me to even consider playing it but that’s because it is usually somewhat indicative of the overall experience on all production fronts, including music, as they are arguably the aspects of the game you interact with first and foremost as Colin mentioned. I think how I feel is I wouldn’t have a great OST at the expense of everything else, but this usually doesn't happen, at least for what I play. However, since I’m fine with playing retro games and Switch, that isn’t a super high bar for me. Again, it’s case-by-case. I’ll have higher hopes for graphics from Guerilla or Santa Monica than a Switch game, but unless you botch them terribly to the point of serious distraction or giving problems playing the game, I’m not gonna care too much. An example of music having high weight for me is Xenoblade 2. The game's gameplay is decent and the graphics aren't great for the hardware. The music though, is 11/10. It's best tracks imo (and there are many) rival, if not surpass, a lot of the best music from the golden age of JRPGs. The score and world design are why I like the game as much as I do. The graphics and gameplay still work well enough for me. I would say this is a game that doesn't deserve its soundtrack lol; it carries. A counter-example is the new set of Pokémon games, Scarlet and Violet. I somewhat value music in this series, but the gameplay is truly king for it… and that foundation was botched via performance and bugs, and some poor production in other areas. So I skipped the game.

1:01:30 I've had game pass for 4 years now and I absolutely buy more games than I did before. What I (and I'm sure many others) do is this: Find and play a game on game pass that I really enjoy > wait for a sale > buy the game. Why would I buy more games than before? Because I'm finding a lot more games that I like (that I otherwise would've never played) due to game pass. It's not as crazy a concept as Colin makes it seem, many people also treat game pass as essentially a replacement for renting a game before buying it up later.
Sorry but Colin is wrong on the whole profitability thing. He's ignoring quite a few factors, and essentially arguing that games on Gamepass don't sell at all other than their GP downloads, but that's not true. Gamepass is only about 20% of their revenue, their games still sell directly to lots of players who don't have Gamepass.
Great show, but I have to disagree one million percent on the music segment. As with movies, a well-done score can add to the mood of a game. It can add tension, adrenaline, etc. It is essential to a complete experience, IMO.
Music is integral to the world that's being built. I don't think it's something to be ranked over or under what it contributes to the overall game. I like to listen to podcasts with certain games but it would be foolish to say it's irrevelant. That's not to say all games are firing on all cylinders when it comes to its music or sound design but like the best of music in any medium, it can elevate the experience. I work out to uncharted 4 music and I still like discovering new licensed music through other games. Stray was the last game where I thought the scored music really popped.
the thing with making the getaway/ another gta clone in modern day is that r* spends hella money and time on these games(8 years) and they are packed to the brim with detail not sure your publisher trusts you that much to give you that same time and money(gta 6 rumred to be like 400 mil without advertising)to make one gamr great interview btw!

Also a GoT PSVR2 game is the next game Firesprite should make. They have most of the work already done with Call Of The Mountain. Add swordplay/shrines/better climbing.
I love you both but music is super important in video games especially now more than ever. The Witcher 3, red dead redemption 2, final fantasy 7 remake soundtracks are quality music up there with Mozart or any classical composers.
I agree but with the original FF7, not so much the remake. I feel part of thr reason music means less in games these days is that it is of lower quality. Can anyone remember a single track from FF13/15 or even 16? Take Dark Souls for example (A game I love). The music isn't too bad per se but is otherwise forgetful generic orchestrals

I think it would be a waste of talent to have Sony's best studios stuck supporting the same live service game for several years while doing nothing else.
Elden Rings platinum rate stat is sus enough to dismiss it's legitimacy entitely, i know a dozen plus people who bought ER for the hype and dropped off after 10 hours of gameplay, I genuinely just refuse to believe that 40% of all players have the platinum which is at minimum 80 hours plus of content. There are 6 hour games with lower rates.
@@BrokenGamezHDR yeah but we don't know how those stats are being compiled, Steam reports global achievements for anyone who has launched the game on their account and it's only got a 20% platinum rate despite the much more hardcore player base. I think playstation is only counting people who have 1 or more trophy or something because 40% on psn is borderline impossible.
The thing is, if you’re going to be a journalist, there’s a certain thing called professionalism. You’re expected to have a certain decorum when you present an argument if you were a journalist presenting for a publication. You should put in an argument. You should be back by some sort of fax or some evidence. You know journalism. Now in video games, journalism, things have changed somewhat because you have entities on UA-cam, who are journalistic but not behaving like a traditional journalist would. We even have some entities that know that the shock and all factor exists. If you come out in brutally trash, something you get more likes, you get more clicks. Ask any politician saying something is good doesn’t get to clicks if you’re in politics, but trash in the opponent that’s how you make the money that’s how you get the votes. This is also true for any social media environment. That’s why you see so many who do a private podcast on the Internet coming down harder on something using tough words if you will. Not that their opinion isn’t true, but those tough words that harsh criticism, it draws a bigger crowd. If you say this game sucks, this game is trash. You get a much bigger crowd than actually writing three paragraphs critiquing why the game is bad in a more journalistic fashion. For instance, what mini review website started to see is people go straight to the score don’t even read the review. Someone to write pay discipline page is reviewing the game explaining why a game that’s a 7.0 is actually good and should be purchased someone sees at 7.0 score they don’t even read the rest of It. No, I do take criticism of one thing. Call In said he said adversary I don’t think he’s a view himself as an adversary to game, developers or publishers. He’s just the person who should critique them. He’s not their adversary he’s more like the referee you know it’s developer versus gamer and it’s developers job to beat the gamer to win if you win to win over the gamer it has a referee it’s his job to say hey this is bad this is good etc.. I hope the example makes sense. What we hope as readers of his material is that his reputation precedes itself so we know when we come to him and he says something it has meaning to it.
So ridiculous to say Fromsoft don't have the writing chops of Naughty Dog, when Naughty Dog are literally just doing tried and true writing tropes and themes from tv and movies or in the case of The last of Us largely stolen from Cormac Mccarthys The Road. Also irks me that Colin insists on using TLOU2 as the barometer for quality when he himself knows the first one is universally praised but the second extremely contentious.

Great show, but I have to disagree one million percent on the music segment. As with movies, a well-done score can add to the mood of a game. It can add tension, adrenaline, etc. It is essential to a complete experience, IMO.

Music is integral to the world that's being built. I don't think it's something to be ranked over or under what it contributes to the overall game. I like to listen to podcasts with certain games but it would be foolish to say it's irrevelant. That's not to say all games are firing on all cylinders when it comes to its music or sound design but like the best of music in any medium, it can elevate the experience. I work out to uncharted 4 music and I still like discovering new licensed music through other games. Stray was the last game where I thought the scored music really popped.
the thing with making the getaway/ another gta clone in modern day is that r* spends hella money and time on these games(8 years) and they are packed to the brim with detail
not sure your publisher trusts you that much to give you that same time and money(gta 6 rumred to be like 400 mil without advertising)to make one gamr

Surprised neither mentioned when talking about Killzone/Resistance how good either would be in VR for PSVR2. These IP are just wasting away at the minute.
Also a GoT PSVR2 game is the next game Firesprite should make. They have most of the work already done with Call Of The Mountain. Add swordplay/shrines/better climbing.
I love you both but music is super important in video games especially now more than ever. The Witcher 3, red dead redemption 2, final fantasy 7 remake soundtracks are quality music up there with Mozart or any classical composers.
I agree but with the original FF7, not so much the remake. I feel part of thr reason music means less in games these days is that it is of lower quality. Can anyone remember a single track from FF13/15 or even 16?
Take Dark Souls for example (A game I love). The music isn't too bad per se but is otherwise forgetful generic orchestrals

Elden Rings platinum rate stat is sus enough to dismiss it's legitimacy entitely, i know a dozen plus people who bought ER for the hype and dropped off after 10 hours of gameplay, I genuinely just refuse to believe that 40% of all players have the platinum which is at minimum 80 hours plus of content. There are 6 hour games with lower rates.

The thing is, if you’re going to be a journalist, there’s a certain thing called professionalism. You’re expected to have a certain decorum when you present an argument if you were a journalist presenting for a publication. You should put in an argument. You should be back by some sort of fax or some evidence. You know journalism. Now in video games, journalism, things have changed somewhat because you have entities on UA-cam, who are journalistic but not behaving like a traditional journalist would. We even have some entities that know that the shock and all factor exists. If you come out in brutally trash, something you get more likes, you get more clicks. Ask any politician saying something is good doesn’t get to clicks if you’re in politics, but trash in the opponent that’s how you make the money that’s how you get the votes. This is also true for any social media environment. That’s why you see so many who do a private podcast on the Internet coming down harder on something using tough words if you will. Not that their opinion isn’t true, but those tough words that harsh criticism, it draws a bigger crowd. If you say this game sucks, this game is trash. You get a much bigger crowd than actually writing three paragraphs critiquing why the game is bad in a more journalistic fashion. For instance, what mini review website started to see is people go straight to the score don’t even read the review. Someone to write pay discipline page is reviewing the game explaining why a game that’s a 7.0 is actually good and should be purchased someone sees at 7.0 score they don’t even read the rest of It.
No, I do take criticism of one thing. Call In said he said adversary I don’t think he’s a view himself as an adversary to game, developers or publishers. He’s just the person who should critique them. He’s not their adversary he’s more like the referee you know it’s developer versus gamer and it’s developers job to beat the gamer to win if you win to win over the gamer it has a referee it’s his job to say hey this is bad this is good etc.. I hope the example makes sense. What we hope as readers of his material is that his reputation precedes itself so we know when we come to him and he says something it has meaning to it.
So ridiculous to say Fromsoft don't have the writing chops of Naughty Dog, when Naughty Dog are literally just doing tried and true writing tropes and themes from tv and movies or in the case of The last of Us largely stolen from Cormac Mccarthys The Road.
Also irks me that Colin insists on using TLOU2 as the barometer for quality when he himself knows the first one is universally praised but the second extremely contentious.
