If you start the engine while in this mode you can still ride the bike (i did) and it will shift for you, but you can not change drive modes or go into manual. Its basically stuck in automatic (probably D mode). Probably not the best idea to ride it while it is trying to reset/calibrate though. 3 Yes, the bike *REALLY* needs to be at the correct temperature else the operation will not finish and it got stuck like that for 30 minutes for me. 4. Using the key to turn off ignition did not seem to be a problem and was even needed after trying to do this at 2 degrees celsius for the above mentioned 30 minutes. Turning the ignition back on starts it up directly into the DCT maintenance mode (or whatever you want to call it) and after starting the engine (at the correct temperature) the mode was exited properly after only a couple of seconds. 5. A full turn off with the key was needed after the operation was finished. Result: A lot smoother shifting and especially the D mode feels much better. I still feel that D mode shifts up too soon leaving you with a bike that feels powerless and it even has a slight stuttering as if you are at the very bottom of the gear in use (fuel economy really isnt THAT important. Honda, add a third mode if thats the case). As for S1 it also shifts smoothly but, also feels the exact opposite in the way that it feels like you are a gear (sometimes two) too low. Sure, you got amazing power but once you let off the throttle, it really should shift up to match the speed you are traveling at.
Your bike sounds just like my 2020 Africa Twin! In drive it hits 6th gear at 36 MPH and it actually shakes if you try to accellerate too much. If your brand new 1100 has trouble accellerating from less than 40 MPH something was misconfigured from the factory.

An update on the reset i did two weeks ago: the fuel econsumption has reduced by almost 25%!! That is spectacular. This is another argument why you should reset the transmission regularly! The "normal" consumption has risen through the years i rode this bike to 6l/100km and sometimes (if i was in a hurry) more. After the reset, the consumption, believe it or not i don't care, has gone down to under 4.5l/100km! Exeter rider has saved me money! Really! But i will not pay a share in the profit... :-)

My NC went in for it's first service at the local Honda Main Dealer however when I went to collect it they technician couldn't get the gearbox working. Turns out he didn't know how to perform a DCT reset, I meet him out the back of the workshop and showed him how to do it. This is a Honda Main Dealer in 2019, to say I was disappointed was an understatement.
@@exeterrider It wasn't his fault, he's the apprentice! The Honda Master Tech wasn't in that day, I did suggest all they has to do was call me and ask to keep it another day. I sent an email to the service manager a few days later explaining all this then sold the bike! The dealer in question does have a mixed reputation here, I wasn't prepared to take anymore chances with service like that. They did manage to fix the faulty DCT system on my NC but that was a long drawn out process.
@@TheDervMan ahh apprentice well thats fair enough then... Faulty dct! What happened? What was wrong, I've done loads of digging and dct seem to have a great record.
@@exeterrider The fault on mine was intermittent, or so I thought! It seems riding in heavy traffic on a hot day would cause the bike to stick in gear. The local dealer wasn't sure and it seems like Honda are control freaks when it comes to problems like this. They replaced a few mechanical parts related to the gear change but that didn't help. The next step was to strip the gearbox and have a closer look. The Master Tech who was looking into it took the bike home one evening and this is where experience kicks in, he noticed the upshift was very sluggish leading up to the failure. He had a hunch it was actually the electronic shifter motor so borrowed on off the showroom model. Turns out it was the shifter motor! He said these things are _really_ expensive (he didn't say how much). Was fine up until the day I sold it. The DCT system is fantastic but I won't buy another as it's such a nightmare to troubleshoot should something fail. Let me grab a video of it in the failed state.

Seen this same tip on another site tried it on my nc700 2012 then i had no drive at all, retried a couple more times still no drive had a panic and a cup of tea tried again after 10 minutes and now works fine so before you start put the kettle on.
Thank you ER, tried same process on my 700D but cannot get it to do anything - have you heard if there is a different process on earlier bikes? Bye-the-way, has SB been in touch, have sent invite to both of you offering very good B&B rates for TT? All you have to do is book your boats and leave rest to me! Use private email if interested please? DD
Thats really kind of you , I can't tell you what that means to me for such a kind offer. Thing is that that will be right in the middle of a busy time getting the loan bikes and I often have a bit of time off to do so but also juggle keeping the misses happy , so with that and going away it could be too much for me to take on . Saddle did mention it and he is much keener than I am but I can't Thank you enough for the offer. Your a Star!! With the older models I have heard that you have to open the throttle at some point and keep it open. It's worth a search on the net to see what the score is there because it makes such a difference! Thanks again : )
Hi, you only need to do that on the older models they phased out in 2016. Your 2017 should be fine without that unless you have a bike that's late registered.
Thank You, after reseting my 2016 Africa Twin DCT it sure picks up gears more smoother and nimbly. Even up a small hill I daily commute it now shifts into 3rd without getting jerky / without power lack. When earlierly it started to shake already in 2nd gear. My question is where did You took the 1500km to 2000km for a new reset, it seems too soon , yet for these benefits I dont mind doing it that soon, if needed
Great vid. Just got my 750s yesterday with 5000 miles on the clock. I would guess it's probably never had a reset. Haven't had a chance to ride it yet, but there is a pronounced 'clonk' when drive is engaged. I'm hoping that this reset will help. Thanks 👍
hello. I'm Julian. Do you know where the Crosstourer's ignition fuse is? I had a short circuit and the motp doesn't turn on!! Or do you know where I can get the technical service manual? I would appreciate your help
Hi Micheal. I believe on 700 models that the throttle has to be opened. So. I advise you to have a look round youtube to find how that works. Sorry I can't be much help on that but this video gives you a good idea.
Gi, great video, I just bought a 2019 Nc750x Dct, how would i know if my bike could do with a reset, and keep up the good work, your videos are very informative
Im not experiencing jerky shifting, what my main issue on the VFR1200x is- when decelerating or close throttle approaching a corner, it wants to stay in 5th or 6th gear and I always have to over ride with the paddle shift to down shift in the correct gear. Will this reset help in that situation?
I've a slightly different switch gear lay out also when the ignition system is switched on there is no yellow engine management light on the 2018 model, so sadly no it doesn't seem to work, l'll have make further enquiries. Kind regards
Makes me wonder if its a recalibration thing or a reset thing. If it is a reset then it would seem to me that all the "learning" is actually making things worse/bad and the bikes would be better with just not learning and having the "correct" factory settings be used all the time.
Is hard to comment without seeing it. Honda tech say its the same process all the way through the ranges. Try again, if not its then it's a 2 minute fix at the dealers unless there is other issues 👍
I've implement this succesfully on my previous DCT (ctx700) But now on my new VFR1200 it goes as the video but only to step 7, and the lights D/S doesnt go out. No issues , no blinking errors, smooth changing etc Was curious if this is still applicable to VFRs
Id be interested in knowing too. Although it may be worth giving it a few trys and maybe do it all a bit faster....sometimes the D/S stage takes a few trys for it to happen...I had the same issue a few times when I have done it so I just repeat and i get there in the end.
@@exeterrider I will definitely try to leave the process for a longer time. I’ve watch the video again and you mention that it could take up to 5minutes and I only tried for a 1 or 2. Another thing with that DDNDN method on my CTX when I got it it was changing the gears kind a rough and wanted to move while idling and had to hold the brake which was a evidence calibration is needed. I was so worried to ride it that I warm it only idling and after 20+ attempts it couldn’t successfully go through. Finally, I had enough and rode it like I stole it. Go through all the gears, changing was smoother and smoother and when I stop it didn’t want to move like before. And then when I’ve tried ddndn it goes through the process within 10 seconds and lights where off.
@@exeterrider Think you might have it the wrong way round for the newer and older models, both the nc forum and in the nc750 pdf online manual for post 2016 bikes you have to hold the throttle open.
www.nc700.co.uk/index.php?/topic/15640-ddndn-clutch-initialisation/ if you can view that link then it says about the procedure where you hold the throttle open for the later 2016-on models.(youtube might block the link tho).

I do believe that you have to open the throttle at some point during the process on older models so I don't think it will. Have a search on UA-cam with that one is best but it's a very similar procedure.
@@exeterrider On post 2016 models you need to hold the throttle open, pre 2016 you don't. Check out page 12-75 on the PDF manual for post 2016 models it tells you the step by step procedure. Open throttle at start, shut off throttle just before the end when you start the engine.
@@exeterrider Lol you may well be right! Tho it's possibly something i don't think Honda want people to know about! Haha. They are great bikes tho, and the DCT just makes them that much better!
Either you missed out a small detail or mine is not resetting properly. When the D and S disappear after about 15 seconds the bike will do nothing. I cannot put it into drive, or manual. I have to turn off , restart the engine again and its fine. Is this the same with everyone? on the vid it resets and you are away.
Hi will this processes work on a NC750x dct 2015? Want to make sure before I try it. I’ve clocked 20000. So I would be very very interesting how the bike will feel. I am currently getting 70 to 80 mtg. Only cos I’m not a speed freak 🤭 thank you in advance Mark.
Hi, yes I have heard it does work for pre 2016 however the process is slightly different I believe. Run a search on youtube for older models. The thtyle has to be pinned I think. Well worth doing!
Wow wow wow wow wow!!!! I have got to say that my bike has done 20491 miles on a 2015 bike (5000 when I had it) and it runs very smoothy up and down the gears. So it runs as I bought it. So not ten minutes ago I did the procedure and went straight back out to see any difference. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC, it works a dream, it’s even more smoother than I could ever anticipate. What a fabby trick. Thank you very very much, glad I stumbled on your site today, all the best. Ps the difference between 2015 backwards and 2016 forwards is that in 2015 you DO NOT hold open the throttle when you engage and hold the Drive rocker switch. But with 2016 models forwards, you DO hold the throttle open just before you engage and hold the drive rocker switch. 😁

Hi all, I’m having trouble with my 2015 750x dct, it keeps dropping out of gear as I’m riding, then getting stuck in gear, and I can’t start the bike until I push the bike to release the gears...then it happens all over again. Anyone else had this problem???
Good trick but you would think that after 13 years of Honda making DCT bikes they would have found a way to make this unnecessary. Maybe on the new bikes it is. 🤷
After about 1000 miles the gear change gets a bit clunky, also pulling away in 1st gear the clutch gets too bitey. The reset sorts all that out. It's not essential but it makes for a better ride.
Please note the bike also has to be OFF the side stand as well when doing this.

😂Tightass 🤣👍good news and thanks for letting me know. Actually I have seen a massive saving in fuel too but was sure if it was just me. I'm getting 20 miles more on motorway runs so your right there. Thanks for letting me know👍🍻
My NC went in for it's first service at the local Honda Main Dealer however when I went to collect it they technician couldn't get the gearbox working. Turns out he didn't know how to perform a DCT reset, I meet him out the back of the workshop and showed him how to do it. This is a Honda Main Dealer in 2019, to say I was disappointed was an understatement.
Not good Derv! Not rocket science and standard procedure on a dct motorbike. He needs some training!
Here you go, I am now quite the expert at 'fixing' DCT's at the roadside ;-)

😂I should have said but any workshop job should start with a cup of tea surely. Bit like saying I'm going to put my pants on before filming this 😂
Nice !!! Done on 6100 km 👍👍👍
Great 👍
Thank you ER, tried same process on my 700D but cannot get it to do anything - have you heard if there is a different process on earlier bikes?

Thats really kind of you , I can't tell you what that means to me for such a kind offer. Thing is that that will be right in the middle of a busy time getting the loan bikes and I often have a bit of time off to do so but also juggle keeping the misses happy , so with that and going away it could be too much for me to take on .
Saddle did mention it and he is much keener than I am but I can't Thank you enough for the offer.
Your a Star!!
With the older models I have heard that you have to open the throttle at some point and keep it open. It's worth a search on the net to see what the score is there because it makes such a difference!
Thanks again : )
Great tip, worked a treat. Thanks heaps.

good man, not done this yet as not many miles on the clock, but will help me in the future, cheers..
Thank you so much ... will be doing it this weekend
Glad it helped, thanks for watching 📺👍
Mine is also 2017 model need to fully open the throttle while pressing DDNDN for this to be succesful thanks for the info
Thanks, yes the, I find around 1500 is where it becomes clunky again. I'm glad it's worked for you 👍
Great vid. Just got my 750s yesterday with 5000 miles on the clock. I would guess it's probably never had a reset. Haven't had a chance to ride it yet, but there is a pronounced 'clonk' when drive is engaged. I'm hoping that this reset will help. Thanks 👍
Welcome to the club, yes the clumps can be clunky. It will help 👍🍻
I can't find this procedure anywhere but here. How did you, Mr. Rider, come to know about this?
I can't remember now...I'm so glad I found out though!
hello. I'm Julian. Do you know where the Crosstourer's ignition fuse is? I had a short circuit and the motp doesn't turn on!! Or do you know where I can get the technical service manual? I would appreciate your help
Hi, I am sorry but I can only guess the fuse is under the seat? I'm not up to speed on the crosstourer.
thanks for the info ... always learning
No probs mate, all part of the service 👍🍻
Excellent video, thanks. Can I do this on my *2013 NC700X* ?
Hi Micheal. I believe on 700 models that the throttle has to be opened. So. I advise you to have a look round youtube to find how that works. Sorry I can't be much help on that but this video gives you a good idea.

Hi, does this work on the new Honda X-ADV 2021/2022 as well?
Should do but not sure, check out my other video for the 2022 nc reset 👍
Im not experiencing jerky shifting, what my main issue on the VFR1200x is- when decelerating or close throttle approaching a corner, it wants to stay in 5th or 6th gear and I always have to over ride with the paddle shift to down shift in the correct gear. Will this reset help in that situation?
Not sure Brian. It could do. 🤷
Did what you recommended. Things went well but won't shift out of neutral. Any ideas. My girl is a 2017 Africa.
Turn it off for an hour then try again. But again it must be to full working temperature.
Can u do this on twin Africa 1000 model cheers

Makes me wonder if its a recalibration thing or a reset thing. If it is a reset then it would seem to me that all the "learning" is actually making things worse/bad and the bikes would be better with just not learning and having the "correct" factory settings be used all the time.
I think it's a good thing that it adjusts and resets it's a good thing I think.
Amazing. I wonder if this also works on 2021 Rebel 1100.
Don't know but I expect they would have kept it the same 👍🍻
Hello. I have xadv 750, I can't do a reset, the S/D lights up but the orange engine light is on all the time, no text reset.
Is hard to comment without seeing it. Honda tech say its the same process all the way through the ranges. Try again, if not its then it's a 2 minute fix at the dealers unless there is other issues 👍
I've implement this succesfully on my previous DCT (ctx700)
But now on my new VFR1200 it goes as the video but only to step 7, and the lights D/S doesnt go out.
No issues , no blinking errors, smooth changing etc
Was curious if this is still applicable to VFRs
Is this the same proses for a 2020 model
Yes
Brilliant!!!

Hello bro, one question, I Have NC750X DCT 2014 model, is this the same way to reset it? PLEASE answer me ! Thanks
I answer everyone. You will have to open the throttle on a 2014 I believe. Search online for more info on that is best 👍🍻
I have seen another video were you need to open your throttle?
No that's on older models not the new ones. Pre 2015 models I believe.this is only for 2016 onwards new shape ncs 👍

@@exeterrider Think you might have it the wrong way round for the newer and older models, both the nc forum and in the nc750 pdf online manual for post 2016 bikes you have to hold the throttle open.

No problem, try opening the throttle fully when you turn ignition on. Hold it open throughout the process and see if that is any different. Side stand or centre stand should be fine.

What a fabby trick. Thank you very very much, glad I stumbled on your site today, all the best. Ps the difference between 2015 backwards and 2016 forwards is that in 2015 you DO NOT hold open the throttle when you engage and hold the Drive rocker switch. @@exeterrider Thanks! When on side stand the horizontal line (inside the gear indicator) was blinking irregular (2 times slow, then few times faster).
Good trick but you would think that after 13 years of Honda making DCT bikes they would have found a way to make this unnecessary. Maybe on the new bikes it is. 🤷
What's happening that the system is degrading over time? Doesn't inspire confidence.
After about 1000 miles the gear change gets a bit clunky, also pulling away in 1st gear the clutch gets too bitey. The reset sorts all that out. It's not essential but it makes for a better ride.
It's not degrading..... Its just fine tuning for a better ride.
