Cheap TIG Welder

- Not too many years ago you had to spend over $1,000 to get a decent TIG machine. Now you can get an acceptable one for less than a few hundred bucks! In this video I put a $215 (shipped!) Yes Welder though its paces, and see how it compares to my professional Miller TIG machine. If you're a Patreon supporter of mine, you'll have a chance to win this Yes Welder when I give it away!
Mark is a true gentleman. He's willing to give a reach around to make the video better for the viewer.
Nice to see you still posting videos, and those were some fine dimes
Primeweld 225x ac/dc tig for around $800..is a beast and has USA customer service with 3 yr warranty.. Lotos welders are good too but no real customer service or great warranty but the prices are great and machines are actually good..
I have one myself . I’ve welded .043 aluminum and have fusion welded razor blades together with my prime weld . The pulse settings are very nice too
You would be surprised at how many you tube videos of welders stacking dimes are really using a pulse welder and never mentioning it. It definitely can be done without the pulse. Retired welder here. I love your videos!!!!
220,221 whatever it takes. Mr. mom
All I know about welding is from watching YT videos, but that doesn't stop me from calling pigeon shit out when I see it out and about. Good to see you Mark!
I enjoyed the Idiocracy clip at the end, it's basically where we are at this point
Those are actually a good welder for light duty.
But how many of us weld 3 ft of weld at a time at max amperage
At 160 amp, I would.
My preferred method is to set current so I can go about as fast as I can with the pedal floored. With an on/off pedal I would have to start at that speed, not roll in to it, I'm not sure if i could do that.
I've never used a pulser, never needed it.
These days any serious machine is going to have lots of gimics because it's just a little programming on the digital controls.
My advice to anyone buying is make sure you get pre/post flow, HF start, variable current pedal and watch reviews. There is a lot of junk out there, a lot of good stuff and a lot in between. If you are trying to go in between to save money, be very careful.
Mark, with the YesWelder, if you haven't already done it... have someone set the amps while you are welding. The stick out looked a little too much. It looks like it's almost a 1/2 inch. Cut it back to no not than 3/8 inch. With that gas on that thickness and tungsten size, Argon or 75/25 AR/HE mix @ about 12-20cfh max... with 75/25 the helium will make it burn a little hotter. Not sure if you already know this info, just putting it out there for those wanting to learn more as well.
Say what ya like, that was still better welding than I can do with my sh1tty 20-year-old "pre-owned" MIG setup...
Excellent content as always ya big-old Pew-Pew Designer/Pew-Pew Nut 😎👍
This is really nice to know that you don’t need a big expensive machine to weld on guns. Thanks for the video mark
23:40 Hahahahahahahahahaaaaaa!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 This jus' made my night! Yeah, I have heard this stupid@$$ expression xD
Singer sewing machines make a variable speed foot pedal switch for their machines and look almost identical to the one featured here. Perhaps something to look into. I would tend to believe it would require a slight modification but hey, if it works and doesn't burn your shop down you're good to go.
You would have to "read" the resistance on the control inside the welder After you disconnect all three wires to it ( remembering where the wires go) next you need to read the resistance of the resister block in the pedal. More than likely it will be a mismatch.
There might be some UA-cam videos as to how to make a variable foot switch.
If I remember right those smaller ones are 200 amps and I haven't had any problem with them almost every so-called cheap welding machine comes with those
Hey Mark, I have a SyncroWave but I bought the 250amp YesWelder on sale a couple of months ago (Memorial Day Sale) for $599 and it kicks ass. I was very pleasantly surprised. I TIG welded some 1/4" 6061 and it worked great. However, keep in mind that it's only rated at something like 200 or 210amps when using SMAW (tried it with some 5P/6010) and it worked just fine.
Have you tried welding with it plugged into 220 volt?
Probably fine as a farm welder. But for high end stuff like your firearms, no way!
The pulse sound is pretty awesome, sounds like a techno rave
I knew this thing sounded like my electric toothbrush!
All these guys with there bfg-50 and me still sitting here dreaming of having one wellbi guess life gives some of us 50's and some of us lemons guess I will go make my lemonade
I have been looking to upgrade from my little Lincoln Handy MIG. Maybe one of these will fit the bill.
They sell a $400 and $500 mig welder. I have the cheaper one and it works just fine for body work and fixing my mower deck. My only complaint is the always on fan.
But hey Mark does that welder identify as a he metal glue rod or a she puddles squirter?
Which one is more trendy today?
Sweet
Nice vid.
I won a H.F.Tools TIG welder as a door prize, and it sat in the box for about 6 months, and finally one day, what the heck, lets open this bucket of bolts up and see how disappointed I will be.. It is a Dinky little thing, scratch start, no variable throttle peddle... Never even plugged it in to play with it, as it would have hurt my high end equipment's feelings...lol... One day, a buddy was hanging out in the shop, and asked what is was and why I have it.. He started to bounce ideas on me of what to do with it.. "Mount it in the rock crawler"... nah, I already have a stick welder system installed on the rig.... Do this, do that... etc.... Then, he said something that intrigued me.... "Take it apart, re-engineer the F out of it, and make this junk rock and roll".... I remember smiling.... YES.... as I twisted my handle bar mustache.. (I don't have a mustache) but you get the point... I turned a free to me, ($399 MSRP) into a rock and roll welding monster, granted, it only has about 10 minutes of cook time, before it must be allowed to cool itself off, but, I made it into a dual feature, I can pulse bomb the weld points or wave weld the joints... I have an additional torch lead, that is from a micro pulse spot welder company, and I can micro weld with that piece of junk.. LOL.. It has a max of 225 amp as the shop has a 400 amp service... Yes, it is retarded and a wast of about $700 bucks on high end electronics, but, I actually really enjoyed that build.. It is kinda fun to use, but, dang, if my ESAB 301i units are now looking at me with a glare, saying with a Greta voice... "HOW DARE YOU"... LOL.. Oh well, add that to the list of stupid crap I have done, and I am sure, many more stupid things yet to do... I kinda wish, I did try using that junk buzz box just to see what and how it performed or lack there of.. I speculate, the home hobbyist would be just fine for using these dinky bizzer boxes an have a great time doing so... And not break the bank in doing so.. But, if welding is something you desire to do, i would say, save your money, and just buy something higher end, as it will save you time, and irritation, and welds will be sure.
Sometimes, when tweakers cut a piece off your exhaust, it's cheaper to buy a Chinese welder and fix it yourself. It could easily be a few thousand dollars worth of damage, if you take it to a shop. These cheap welders don't have to be good, or last a long time. They simply have to get a job done for very little money, and people will keep buying them.
I really like it ... "This is a crappy welder ... This bead is crap ... that is crap ... Let me take my pro-welder out ..." And turns out the dude just has 0 welding skill. :D :D :D haha
Turn up the light! It's impossible to see the welder result!
Mark, you're a funny guy.
But looks aren't everything.
Unfortionatley beingon its a disability pension and not being able to work. I could only afford a 2nd $100 au machine. Unless you have money ipeople like myself cannot affoed a gpod machine even a oldet good mschine is lick $500 tp $1000
What hope do we / I have.
Regards Andy Perth Australia
Clean the metal your welding.
the waffle house has found its new host
I bought a similar machine for my dad here in germany, his assessment, not even close to professional ones but good enough for the usual household welding and way cheaper.
Yep, a few hundred bucks and bang, you're a welder.
if this is my final UA-cam comment it means I burned my shop down learning how to weld
LGBT inverter? I think thats the name of that Christian summer camp in Montana
might be monkeypox on it

ROFLMFAO !
My local FFL just received a big ol wood crate full of BFG-50 goodness with my name on it. Gotta say worth the wait. So glad you started offering the nitride barrel coating, along with the practical side it just looks good. Thanks for putting out a rock solid rifle and thanks to the office people for making everything smooth and easy.
@rusty schackelford Thanks for buying one of my "babies"!
So is LGBT the new way of saying your welder is AC/DC?🤣
i don't know about that lgbt welder, may switch polarity without warning
I just wanted to let you know. I enjoy watching crafting videos of all kinds. Plus I have epilepsy. Usually I have to watch welding through a filter. That was the first time I didn't. Thank you! I always wanted to get into machining and welding but it wasn't in the cards for me.
Welding 40 + years.
A Very Rewarding Endeavor.
so... isn't polartec fleece kinda flammable?
@WA Ivan Yeah, but I actually found that out while shooting fireworks in the shop, not while welding. ;-)

So far I like your video man and you're the first person I've seen that took a yes welder take 205 DS and put it up next to a professional Miller especially the syncrowave 200 apples for apples but love that you know you tell the truth that you're able to do professional welds with a cheap machine I got a cheap machine I started with a susemse mig-215 and I still have it today.
Well I’m no welder but TIG welding over mill scale will always give horrible results the tungsten stick out was too long for that small cup and the tungsten was contaminated. My experience is grind any material to shiny metal then clean it with solvent if your going to TIG weld it.
LGBT welder. I worked with a few of those over the years lol
Knowledge is power brother
So thank you
Have a great day
Just saying
Gotta clean the mill scale...
I own the yeswelder pulse tig with HF start and that machine has been a solid performer. I would take a look at their higher end offerings.
Sup 50cal Val, hope all is well 👊👍👍🇺🇸🐍

Mr. Mom. I'm an electrician and my boss has a big "220/221 whatever it takes" neon sign in the shop. The 165 amps is probably from using 120V.
165 amps on 110v. probably need to plug into 220v to get the full 200 amps.
I’m a welder , I work in boilers and nuclear shutdowns just a couple of tips because I can tell you know how to weld , but your technique is off. 1 clean your metal way better , that’s why the welds looks like horse sh*t , flapper wheel and maybe some sand paper ? 2. Turn your heat down , your welds are burnt out there for shrinking into the metal , yes it’s penetration but the weld is cooking itself out. 3 your not adding enough filler material. Your just dabbing little by little . Use your hand to hold and your finger to feed more metal , it should be good penetration and good support as well, I can tell you have welded a lot so I’m not gonna slam you but , you can do better with a hood or bad machine , have a good day
After welding Hold the tungsten against the work piece and bump the pedal/button every second and you get post flow for how ever long you need. I figured it out on my cheap tig. Also you compared the weight like it was a bad thing why would a inverter welder weigh the same as a large transformer welder? There a different beast entirely ones for light duty stuff clearly the other is an industrial grade machine.
What I usually do is inhale some argon and then exhale it right onto the bead as I let off the pedal.
mark welds can look nice but do you test the depth of penetration? or if they stress the metal around them?
First to add a pedal if you find out what the ohm value for the front amp adjust is, you can get a pedal and match it. Then get a plug to make it a jack in type if pedal and wire it in parallel with a cut off switch.
The pre and post flow can be done easy with a second line off the regulator to where are welding
Mr. Mom! One of my favorite movies!
Where is the link to get it at $215.00 shipped?
Excellent product video informative and interesting thank you for sharing five stars
I liked the "Uzi test". That was one of the times when I was cursing not having a TIG machine, for sure! I wasn't about to use MIG/FCAW or stick, so I ended up using my oxy/acetylene to build my Uzis. Worked great, still would have preferred a TIG.
Great Report .
Thank You .
Mr. Mom would have prepped the parent metal by brushing, or light sanding.
Thanks for the video.
Mr. Mom was the movie, but I believe the line was "210, 220 whatever it takes" Great video as usual.
That machine only does 165 amps at 120V. If you plug into 220V, you get 200 amps.
I bought one similar to this about 2yrs ago when I was opening my shop. Mine does have post flow though, no pedal, and high frequency start. I knew I wouldn't be doing a ton with it so I wasn't looking to spend a ton. I was honestly pretty surprised by it. As an arc welder I would rate it as good as any buzz box I've used and actually welded some pretty heavy steel with great results. The tig mode took me forever to figure out, mine has an extra switch an knob that weren't documented in the instructions, although I couldn't understand half the translations anyways. Once I got it figured out it does run pretty good but only running on 220v. I tried it for about 15 minutes on 110v when I had to go weld up a bracket on my dad's tractor and it just didn't seem to have the same output and was unpredictably heating. I have yet to try it with stainless or aluminum but I would assume it's passable. All in all for someone who just needs a welder for odd jobs I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one, for anyone doing serious or extended work on a daily basis it would probably work but I wouldn't bet on it lasting long under those circumstances.
Well you say you TIG weld I don't think you do you plug that yes welder into 110 volts you're not going to weld that thick of steel that you've been trying to weld with it you got to plug the 220 part of the plug into a 220 to get the full amperage
I want to learn to tig weld so I can do a G3 clone on a few of my kits . Should I spend a bit more money or would this be ok for a few rifle projects and various practice ? I've done some stick welding and oxygen acetylene as well .
Really depends, is this literally JUST for a few small projects? If so, find something used for cheap, something that you'll actually be able to resale when you're done with it.
If it's a little more than that, something you're planning on keeping for future use, look into Harbor Freight's welders, they're much better than these eBay machines without being too expensive. They have a 140 multiprocess for $550, a little more than double the price of this thing - but it's also a much better DC TIG welder than this, while also having MIG functionality too, and includes a stick stinger,. It's an impressive package for the price, can pretty much do everything but AC TIG(for aluminum and such). Spend money on a good quality regulator(don't cheap out there), good consumables, and an auto darkening helmet and call it a day. Can't beat HF's no questions warranty either, you bring anything back and they just give you a new one lol.
Everlast is another great budget brand, they have a 140 DC TIG/stick for $280 and are solid machines. That thing absolutely craps all over this eBay machine lol. Also, a 140 multiprocess MIG/TIG/stick for $600 that's, frankly, probably a step up from the HF unit - but it's hard to beat being able to run down to HF when you need something(especially warranty stuff). Assuming you have an HF near you of course, would be surprised if you don't.
Anyway, with how good budget level machines are from more legitimate brands(kinda wild that HF can be a more legit brand than eBay brands lol, we've come a long way boys), there's no reason to go with this stuff. I mean, that Everlast for $280 is lightyears better than this, and is an established brand that's actually been around for years now.
edit: I take that back, the Everlast 140STI doesn't have variable control - the $400 160ISTH would be the go to for a real entry level TIG. The 140 is kinda like the eBay machine with its very limited functionality, but a better quality version(you really want variable control though).
Otherwise, I don't think I screwed anything else up lol. Anyway, check out some reviews, a number of welders have machine reviews on YT, and Harbor Freight & Everlast are a good place to start comparing machines(quality/features vs price).
Personally, id use this on projects, but probably not on any pressure sensitive areas. I'd have to have a lot of practice with it before I would trust it that much
When welding that pipe and the surface looked bad it looked like during the actual welding there was wind blowing past that probably blew the gas away. There was smoke so you could see the air moving
Neat trick that... Welding the inside of the tube from the outside.
Hey man! Don't KNOCK the Craftsman AC BuzzBox! I'm still running one to this day! Runs like a champ!
It goes to the 205 after you plug it into a 220 outlet.
That machine is reminiscent of the $140 flux core welder I got from Harbor Freight.
Yes pretty cool stuff!
I am looking at gas welding to make clean welds. It is said that gas welding is used to weld small parts made from plate steel. So it should give some decent results, and i already have the torches, only need to get the cylinders. I think im going to take that a try.
Greetings,
Jeff
Always good to see your content and I learned quite a bit about welding so thank you mark appreciate you
"Can you get gun quality welds..."
What. Gun?
Royal None Such, LOL.
Whether you're welding on a PPS (metal tube where the least amount of welding ability is needed) or a trigger sear all gun welds should be the highest quality you can manage.
I thought the same when the video started on the sharpie box modification. 👍 Otherwise this video really reminds me I need a shop to work in again, at least out of sun and rain.
If some people in the comments get butt hurt watching you weld... they would send death threats after watching me weld.
Immediately smashed the "like" button after clicking on the notification! Good Morning Mark! #NotificationGang
Lmao, not the Abby normal
I find with the low-end plasma cutters their performance improves when they get the best power available. Mine does much better on 220 than 110.

You’ll be glad to know mark uses this method to build all his guns.
Could you do aluminum with this or is it not enough amps? Oh I suppose it would also supposed to have the etching pulse in there too
Continuous ac high frequency is what I’ve always tig welded aluminum with. I’ve heard you can weld with out the high freq but I’ve never tried it. From what I’ve read it’s a really erratic arc with out the high freq and hard to control. But welding amps you could do 1/8 and lower. Anything bigger I bet it would depend on the duty cycle of the machine if you preheat the metal.
Interesting, might have to get one of these.
Would the Yes welder work better if you put a gas lens on it like you have on the Syncrowave?
For tig (Actually GTAW) it's typically called the torch or cup.
For stick welding (SMAW) the clamp that holds the rod is called a stinger.
For MIG (GMAW) it's called a gun.
You can add an external pedal with a variable resistor to mimic the factory pedals. You need to read the resistance of the control, disconnect the wires to it knowing where each on goes back on the control. I have seen some videos where people build their own pedals with the proper resistor in it to replace the internal control of the machine. I have a cheap scratch start machine that I am planning to do the same modification. One will need a triple pole double throw switch and a four conductor connector similar to what is used in CB radio microphones. This will allow one to select which control will be used ( foot control for TIG and internal control for stick). BTW who is watching the baby if .50 cal Val is holding the mike. Was talking with a friend who built up a semi Uzi from a parts kit and receiver section they offered in the past. He told me that he butt welded the pieces together without a filler rod. Is this possible or common and is it strong enough without filler? Would it be advisable to weld from both sides considering there is a micro gap on the back side of your last weld. About eight years ago I found some company in the UK who was selling pulser modules to add to existing welders, there might be some plans out there if your a DIY electronics geek.
Keep these educational videos coming!
Thanks for the education.
Try ER70S6 for junk material. And a #12 cup.
Lets hope UA-cam don't demonetise this one because you mentioned the Uzi 😂
Was that a Mr Mom movie reference?
Yup!
The welds turn out better when you grind the millscale off.
I have one from China that was $210 and that's bigger and nicer made with nice clamps and such. Thing actually does damn good! Bought a nice Miller at auction cheap and it barely does any better tbh, just has more settings and doesnt require as much focus. And allows high frequency too
Why wouldn't Valerie put her smart finger over the Mic? Lol!
Yes some people say stinger!
Looks like a copy of Miller’s Maxstar 150 inverter machine.
Yo, Kevin Murray!
Oh yeah I think I looked at one of those a few years ago I liked that it was the size of a sewing machine you could fit in the back of my apartment closet.
Yes Welder is now "woke". I bet they sent a free machine to Elton John for evaluation.
Dang, you crack me up!!!!🤣🤣👍
