I suspect that the gear that's binding with the housing is in the wrong place. The previous owners may have taken the gear box apart and put them back in incorrectly. I have a 4900 Clausing lathe at work and they are very good machines provided they are well cared for. It's unfortunate to see many Clausing lathes on Ebay in terrible shape. The one you have needs a lot of TLC and If I had it, I'd rather invest in its restoration than buy a Chinese made lathe.
I'd say the gear is in the wrong place is my guess ,I've just stripped down my Clausing/Stedal which is very similar to yours . And it's definitely a good lathe, and well made, well worth restoring . The nut that the feedscrew goes through on your carriage is probably worn ,the can be quite hard to source .
looking forward to more video of this project,i have a Clausing derived Fortis lathe which is very similar to yours . what size is the vee belts on this lathe .
At 12:25, with the caption visable converning your reviewing the manual there is a small gear in the frame. Its behind the large gear thats not meshing correctly and the small gear im referring to is above and behind this large gear your puzzled by. It seems to be stuck on the top of the gearbox casting. Is it supposed to be there ?
The play is called back last. 90% of the time it is the nut that the screw rides through and so.e adjustment. 0 back lash is the goal. Common is about a half of thou to one thou. A half turn is off the charts. I would start with adjustments if you can't achieve the parameters above. I would get into the nut and acme screw
Shim the gear with a washer. I just restores my mk3. I had the same issue. If you remove the gear end cap cover on the left side of the gear shaft that's grinding. There is a factory shim washer that goes there. Just swap it out with a thicker washer.

Restored it yet?
If these gears run in grease instead of oil they'll be more quiet grease cushion the gear hitting each other.
Ibput a thin coat of grease on mine
I have a similar model Clausing and they are a dandy. It's can be hard to get parts but one you get it going good your going to love the ol gal.
If possible can you do a video of the inner working of the clutch
For the price and it's age, I think the free play(slop) looks fine. Does the manual mention anything about adjusting the gibs?
look at all the oil on that clutch......... hose it off with some b12 chemtool and brake cleaner

A question. I know newer model (clausing) have hardened ways. Did hardening ways start with models this early?
I don't know for sure but it probably did because it's in the advertisements. I still wouldn't leave stuff on the ways though.

Hey Garage Geek, I am looking at same model lathe as yours. Do you like it? What is the spindle size of the lathe? Thanks Ron
putting one of these back together that i took apart over 20 years ago sure glad i have a manual
I been restoring a early model of those. Too bad you are not around anymore to see the progress on the lathe

Even new lathes have some free play they have too,,but you need to tighten up yours a bit and preload it
Shoot Abom79 a message, he might be able to explain some of the things you're looking for
Anybody notice the spindle turning backwards?
It's because it was in reverse
Awesome deal for 250 bucks!
I saw belt slip not clutch
Where is part 2
