One of the, if not best videos for anyone servicing this or similar machine. Ours is 15+ years old. My wife is an avid baker, uses it 4-5x/week. Last week I ground up a 15lb brisket. By the end, noticed a nasty burning smell and mixer top cover was too hot to touch. The unit has never been serviced! Figured it was time before it died. Looked at numerous videos and yours by far was the most thorough and complete. Very logical and sequential. As easy as it looks or seems for most of us DIYers, these one off projects can easily go bad. With your help, it was in fact quite easy. Dear Sir, would you have any thoughts about which ‘grease’ to use on the mixer when the mixer is used by an another avid baker? I would not want the mixer to smell like a Ferrari post-race whilst mixing dough.😂Thank you!
@@jkadams63 I used a “food grade” grease product found on Amazon. It included replacement gaskets. I attempted to cut and paste the actual link but it appears the seller is no longer selling the product? But there are several others listed on Amazon. Be sure to read reviews to help you select the most compatible product. Obviously food grade is critical and imo, so are the gaskets. I serviced ours 2 years ago and have had zero issues and certainly no odours. Good luck!
Thank you SO much. I was given a kitchenaid pro that worked, but made an annoying sound. Got it open and that planetary gear was dry as a bone. I changed all the grease and my mixer sounds nice and smooth now!
Super Lube Synthetic Grease is food safe graded and you can find it at The Home Depot or most auto parts stores. It's dielectric grease and works great in mixers. Good to 500 degrees F. and doesn't separate. Regreased my lift bowl K5-A mixer a year ago with it and have had no problems.

Great video. One question: noticed there’s a gasket at the bottom of the transmission housing. Did you replace this with a new one or simply reuse the original?
This is a wonderfully detailed video with so many great tips and clear explanations. I didn't even know this was a thing!!! My mixer is only a little over a year old and I use it constantly. I did have grease leak once, landing on the platform under the bowl, but that was months ago and never happened again. Am I okay to leave it or should I be doing this maintenance now? Anyone?
You should be fine. The oil does not separate from the grease for five or ten years. If you do not overload the bowl and strain the mixer with things like bread dough over and over again, then the mixer should keep making cake batter far beyond the day you remodel the kitchen and decide a new color is needed. I hope yours lasts and don't worry about it unless you just want to do some preventive maintenance.

This was great. Wish I'd seen it before I greased mine. I used too much of the wrong type of grease, and it eventually wept down the beater shaft and lubricated the friction fit spline which drives the planetary gear. I'm off to buy some white lithium and red loctite now! Many thanks.
I took most of it apart but I could not get the little clip or pin off, that allows for the gears to disassemble. Greased it up and got it back together. It works but has a grinding clunking noise. But your instructions were excellent
I have seen the bottom where the mixer blades attach come loose. At least that is what the issue could be as all other parts have gravity in their favor with respect to being loose or noisy.
How'd you clean the grass out? Didn't show that. My mixer lost oil while in a box packed up when moving and stayed on its side a long time. Where do I need to replace the great at? Thanks.

I did go back and repack the transmission to quite the assembly down. The amount put in was still in place but, since I had so much left over I decided to use it up instead of just letting it sit there for another 10 years. Thank you for asking.
Thanks for filming this. What tool did you use to remove/replace the top clip? Also is there any danger of electric shock when you open the top case (not plugged in the socket, of course)? (Asking bcs I remember my father was careful when opening old tvs...maybe he needed to unplug a while before or something...it is many years ago can’t remember anymore)
There are no capasitors on the control board to shock you when removing the cover. You will need snap ring pliers to remove the clips for disassembly. You can take digital pics or lable the wires if you choose to disconnect from the circuit board but, that is not necessary. Oil dripped after 3 or 4 uses when it was kept tilted. After that it stopped leaking. I have already opened it up and planning to replace the grease. Do you think it is necessary to replace the O-ring on the spindle to prevent oil leak or just replace the grease with new grease? Thanks again for an excellent video!!! By the way the O-ring available may not fit my 7-yr old discontinued Kenmore Elite model.
The o-rings should be ok. If not harbor freight or an equivalent store should carry pack of o-rings. Amazon might have some but the might be listed as auotmotive.
@@A_Renaissance_Man Thanks, I took my O-ring as sample to Home Depot and found an equivalent (packet of) o-rings. First set was too thick. So within half an hour, I went and exchanged for a correct match. I replaced the O-rings along with new grease replacement in my Kenmore Stand Mixer - worked pretty good.
(Hop you are still monitoring this thread.) Thank you for the detail instruction. My unit stopped spinning (died with some pretty bad grinding noise.) I disassembled everything as you described and tried to diagnose. What I found out was that at you 14:18 when you re-assemble the planetary part back, the only gear there was spinning quite freely, but on my unit it was frozen. I didn't have any way to loosen it up. I guess I will need to order a planetary unit and see if that fixes the problem. If you are reading this thread, I appreciate any comment. Thank you.
Thank you for your question. Replacement of the entire unit is about $65 + S&H but color matching is the issue because of availability. Your are saying that the Shaft Agitator, Part Number:WP9708191 ($15) is not turning in the planetary unit. With the snap ring off the top of the gear, removal of the gear is a matter of time and patients. Wiggling, pushing and pulling to unjam the gear or shaft is time consuming. The shaft is stainless steel so only use a wooden or brass hammer to tap both ends to start the shaft removal process. Once you get the shaft wiggling around, then it is only a matter of time and patients before the shaft agitator is removed from the planetary base unit. Good luck with your repair. Try not to throw parts at it but you can go to places like partswarehouse, ereplacementparts, or whatever website you choose to look a diagrams and order parts.

Color matching is not an issue as long as I can get it working for my "boss" again. Funny to notice the replacement part is almost 1/4 of the original purchasing price! Thanks again.
Hi, David, just to close this subject. I ordered the whole planetary assembly and the replacement part works fine. When I removed the old planetary assembly and examined it, the "gear" was stuck and not spinning at all, top of the gear was shiny. I also noticed the scraping mark (metal dust) on the bottom of the lower gearcase where the planetary assembly was attached to. I think over time the agitator was pushed out of position ("up") and caused the gear to scrape the bottom of the gearcase, the accumulated metal particle eventually jammed the gear and the agitator which I was not able to remove from the planetary assembly anymore. I followed the steps and put everything together again and all is working now. Just for reference if useful for other viewers...the planetary part came in White/Black/EmpireRed. My mixer is in red color where the part was backordered. I waited for 2 weeks and decided to get the White one (actually cheaper). Perfect match. Thanks again.
Was coming to ask the same question. My mixer is old and noisy and the greasy is gummy and black. I was just planning on wiping and brushing the grease off. What is the benefit of using a solvent?
@@haley-annemiller8641 the benefit of using a solvent is that you have a chance of getting rid of the old broken grease that is stuck to the gear surface. Just wiping it off will only remove the excess grease that wasn't contributing anyway
Very informative and nice video. I'am reparing a 40+ years old hand mixer that won't run at full speed and when turning has a burn smell to it. Probably needs some grease. You where talking about grease being a mixture of oil and farafine. What kind of grease did you actually use or can I use? I was even thinking of using sowing machine oil but that is probably not greasy enough. What do you think?
Thank you for asking. Probably the fastest way to get food grade grease is to go to Amazon and search. For about $5 you can get more than enough for any size mixer. The longest part of the process is cleaning up the old used grease. Take pictures before and during disassembly so you will know how the mixer was originally assembled. What I was saying about the grease is that grease is a semisolid lubricant formed in a dispersion of thickening agents in a liquid lubricant. For example food grade would consist of lubricants used in food-processing environments where there is the possibility of incidental food contact. Good Luck and I hope that works out ok for you.
No you do not have to remove the circuit board or unplug any of the connections. The one screw near the board may be a little hard to reach but do-able. I just took everything apart for the video and so I could clean the greased up areas with some cleaning liquids.
My mom gifted me her 18 year old KitchenAid Professional 600 that she bought and NEVER USED NOT ONE TIME! While I'm enthusiastic about trying new things with it, I'm wondering if because it just SAT, for so many years, if a grease change is a good idea before I start abusing this thing? Also, did you replace the housing gasket or reuse the existing one? Thanks
I think you will enjoy your mixer. The grease is good as long as the grease/oil does not drip out. That is when you should change it. I did not change the gasket as it was glued to the housing and was in excellent condition. The gasket is about 5 or 6 dollars if a new one is desired. Enjoy the mixer.

Does changing the grease reduce the noise it make? My mixer is about 7 years old without any maintenance and sounds squeaky and loud. Not sure if it’s like that when new. Otherwise it still works great.
It helped with mine - it probably depends on the source of the noise. The motor is still louder than I’d like but it sounds so much smoother . (My planetary gear was dry and gunky.)
Well ... I deliberately did not say how because I did not want to show the use of non food grade chemicals that a viewer could use and have them find their way into their food. Having said that, I used Purple Power and a dish soap wash and rinse. Next time, I plan on using Simple Green which is gentler to the skin with a dish soap wash and rinse.

For me, this is not a time issue. When I see the oil separating out of the grease, it is time to clean up the inside and start fresh. Thank you for asking.
I would love to help. I completely understand your dilemma. I too have things I cannot or do not want to do. As far as a shop. Small appliance shops are pretty rare now a days. Also to changing the grease does not mean doing the whole thing like I did.
Thank you for asking as I have thought about those exact same things. You do not need to replace the grease unless it is dripping out but, you could replace the grease as preventive maintenance. The food grade grease that I have found is white when new and turns a light brown or tan when the gearing exercises the lubricant. Second, the noise. I have been unable to dampen the volume of the motor and gears as the motor is open on the end to allow for cooling air to circulate and the gearing noise is actually coming more from the planetary gear where the attachments are, rather than the transmission case where the grease and gears reside. I found that out by packing the transmission case full of grease which is not shown in the video.

Thank you for asking. In my opinion, replacing the board would be your best option. The board is available from Amazon and some parts places that you can find with a search. Good Luck with your repair. The last board repair I did was on a cold solder joint on an LED display board in a 15 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee.
PLEASE HELP ME. I CAN'T GET THE PIN OUT TO REMOVE THE PLANETARY. I've used a punch and hammer, and then a bit from a screw driver, to better cover the overall size of the surface of the pin, and a hammer. I have even sprayed it with WD40 in hopes that some would leak between the pin and it's chamber. I wiggled the whole planetary in hopes of getting the WD40 in better. I've tried putting the mixer at every angle.... upright, upside down and on it's side. I've tried both sides of the pin. I've even had 2 other people try it ... but nothing is working! And the end of the pin, and area around the pin is taking a beating. 😢
Sorry if I repeat something you have already done. Remove the snap ring. Remove the bevel gear. Push up on the plantary gear plate and ... Push the pin out. Both pins were very loose so your comments surprise me. Good luck and ask more questions if you need to.
Good to know. I used H1 food grade grease. This actually a tough subject as they can be petroleum based but are classified as food based because when it accidentally contacts food being produced, following a leak, this is totally safe for the food produced. Note that the specifications state that the grease is food safe but the human safe is just implied. I will look into the Benalene 930-2 grease for its contents.

Yes I did. I used Super Clean. I used to use Purple Power but I do not like that any more because breathing it is irritating.

i got a kitchen aid mixer grease the came with the cover or housing gasket. how often would that get replaced?
The transmission housing gasket sould not need to be replaced. They are only 5 or 6 dollars if you just want to start fresh.

While I'm enthusiastic about trying new things with it, I'm wondering if because it just SAT, for so many years, if a grease change is a good idea before I start abusing this thing?
Also, did you replace the housing gasket or reuse the existing one?

I think you will enjoy your mixer. The grease is good as long as the grease/oil does not drip out. That is when you should change it. I did not change the gasket as it was glued to the housing and was in excellent condition. The gasket is about 5 or 6 dollars if a new one is desired. Enjoy the mixer.

I opened the housing, checked the gears and grease, and it's all fine.
And I came to understand that my mom was wrong, her memory not being what it used to be.
The mixer was bought in 06 or 07. Making it 13 or 14 years old. Not 18 as she claimed lol.
What and or how did you clean the gear casing and parts.
I said in the video that I used chemicals but actually I scraped, wiped, and then washed the parts in dawn soap and hot water.
Does changing the grease reduce the noise it make? My mixer is about 7 years old without any maintenance and sounds squeaky and loud. Not sure if it’s like that when new. Otherwise it still works great.
No the noise is not reduced. Even if you pac the transmisdiin full of grease.

It helped with mine - it probably depends on the source of the noise. The motor is still louder than I’d like but it sounds so much smoother . (My planetary gear was dry and gunky.)
How did you clean off the old grease?
Well ... I deliberately did not say how because I did not want to show the use of non food grade chemicals that a viewer could use and have them find their way into their food.
Having said that, I used Purple Power and a dish soap wash and rinse. Next time, I plan on using Simple Green which is gentler to the skin with a dish soap wash and rinse.

Sorry about that.
They are all external snap rings so they are spread open or you can slide them off with the tip of a flat head screw driver.
No worries... For us beginners we don't know how to remove snap rings and don't have the tools. Great video otherwise!

For me, this is not a time issue.

Small appliance shops are pretty rare now a days.
Also to changing the grease does not mean doing the whole thing like I did.
Can you tell me how to get that darned clip ring off?
I use straight nose, snap ring pliers.
If the grease is just amber, not black, should I still replace it? It’s always. Been noisy... will it run more quietly?

You do not need to replace the grease unless it is dripping out but, you could replace the grease as preventive maintenance.
The food grade grease that I have found is white when new and turns a light brown or tan when the gearing exercises the lubricant.
Second, the noise. I have been unable to dampen the volume of the motor and gears as the motor is open on the end to allow for cooling air to circulate and the gearing noise is actually coming more from the planetary gear where the attachments are, rather than the transmission case where the grease and gears reside.
I found that out by packing the transmission case full of grease which is not shown in the video.

Thank you for asking. In my opinion, replacing the board would be your best option. The board is available from Amazon and some parts places that you can find with a search. Good Luck with your repair. The last board repair I did was on a cold solder joint on an LED display board in a 15 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee.
PLEASE HELP ME. I CAN'T GET THE PIN OUT TO REMOVE THE PLANETARY. I've used a punch and hammer, and then a bit from a screw driver, to better cover the overall size of the surface of the pin, and a hammer. I have even sprayed it with WD40 in hopes that some would leak between the pin and it's chamber. I wiggled the whole planetary in hopes of getting the WD40 in better. I've tried putting the mixer at every angle.... upright, upside down and on it's side. I've tried both sides of the pin. I've even had 2 other people try it ... but nothing is working! And the end of the pin, and area around the pin is taking a beating. 😢
Sorry if I repeat something you have already done.
Remove the snap ring.
Remove the bevel gear.
Push up on the plantary gear plate and ...
Push the pin out.
Both pins were very loose so your comments surprise me.

Isn't food grade grease nothing but lard? Kitchenaid mixers use Benalene 930-2 grease. It is not white, and it is not, so called, food grade grease.
Good to know. I used H1 food grade grease.
This actually a tough subject as they can be petroleum based but are classified as food based because when it accidentally contacts food being produced, following a leak, this is totally safe for the food produced. Note that the specifications state that the grease is food safe but the human safe is just implied. I will look into the Benalene 930-2 grease for its contents.
