Fun fact, the actress who plays Gi-Hun’s daughter also does the voice for the creepy huge mechanised doll…
a fun side note, for those that don't know-- the scene where gi-hun falls and tries to put the straw back in the girls cup, was not scripted(the straw part). It was apparently so funny that the actress actually starts laughing, but they liked the scene so much they kept it in. you can't even tell if you're not looking for it--
You can see her holding in her laughter, and the next scene is edited perfectly so that she's bent over as though just concerned about her coffee. I really WOULDN'T have noticed if no one told me.
"people are starting to get more used to sub titles" me as a non native english speaking European :" I've been reading subtitles half my life, it's how I learned english"
Yeah but Americans don't for the most part. It used to be that the very few non-English shows would be poorly dubbed or American tv producers would just remake shows in English. You had to go out of your way to find arthouse films if you were willing to watch subtitles. Streaming really changed things.
As an English speaker I always watch subtitles when available because the “Americanized” voice overs often lose the emotional weight of the original acting.
16:10 Haha this take is actually spot on. The actor said he spoke with the director and asked him to include a scene like this, to feed the kitty, because he felt his character was otherwise TOO unlikeable, lol. Felt he needed at least one redeeming factor.
If y'all can't wait for this to debut, go subscribe to their Patreon! I fell in love watching their reactions when I came across their GOT reactions, have loved watching them react to everything else ever since!
@TheJoeGreene This is a logically flawed, painfully entitled position to take. You don't have to pay to see their content. It's all available on youtube. Patreon is not a traditional client/employee contract. You are more or less donating money to them because you like their content and want to gain access to early and uncut versions of their reactions, that's it. You are not paying them to provide you with a service. They are not obligated, contractually or morally, to react to the shows that you want them to. Do you only watch them for their What If? reactions? They have a lot of great content. You should check it out instead of stomping your foot and giving off major Karen vibes. Who knows, if you ask nicely they might pick it back up.
@TheJoeGreene we’re finishing it. Just dropped ep 6 as I’m sure you know. But ALL of S1 is available on Patreon. But until I rename our channel The What If Reaction Factory you should calm your tits with the thievery comments.
So glad y'all are doing this. 👍🏼 If you think that UA-cam rant about Joker losing to Parasite was over the top you should see the one he did when he found out Superman's son has a boyfriend. 😄😄😄
One thing that’s never stated definitively is whether our lead gambled and got himself into debt because of it, or whether he got deep into debt first. I bring it up because it’s actually common for people who have gotten themselves so deep into debt that they don’t see any way out to start gambling, because they see it as the last desperate means to maybe get themselves out. In a sense, that’s what the squid games are. One last Hail Mary gamble for the players to maybe have a chance to get out from the financial hell they’re stuck in.
looking forward to more of this! there's definitely a lot of discussion that's gonna come out of this show, and knowing you guys from your other reactions of series', I look forward to hearing your takes.
Morgan citing The Long Walk makes my day. i LOVE that story & it's very similar when the first kid is killed (due to having slowed down or stopped). the dawning realisation of not just the players but the reader, or in this case viewer, is superb.
Love the reference to The Long Walk, because the parallels are definitely there. In The Long Walk anyone who fell back to walking too slow was shot, it was all showed with enthusiastic spectators, and the winner was generally so traumatised that they rarely got to enjoy the winnings.
I’m glad you guys are enjoying this show! This K-drama deserves all the love it’s getting! If you guys want to check out other K-dramas, I think Kingdom is a show that I think you guys will really love! That show has completely changed the way I look at what is the ideal zombie show!
Lol!! I can't believe that THIS is what I'm focusing on in the mania of Squid Game reactions, but the movie Morgan is thinking of in the beginning is Minari which was an American film with Korean being the predominant language and people were being shits like "Ah it's a foreign film because they ain't speakin the English."
There’s an interesting thing in Korean society where the father is preferred for child custody, not the mother as it is here. In train to Busan, the father has custody, which is accepted norm. My nieces were in their fathers custody but he didn’t want them (business man like Busan guy). Instead of going to their mother, they were put in custody of the fathers parents. Their mom was only able to fight for custody after she remarried. So what the guys mother said was true. If he could prove he was financially able, he would have gotten custody over his daughter.
11:09 about disclaimer of physical rights... It is true that a disclaimer of physical rights was used by some gangs in about 1980s to 1990s in South Korea, but it is not widely used in status quo. And, even in 1980s and 1990s, they were just for threat, not for real organ trafficking. Gangsters in South Korea were mostly cracked down in 1980s with the 'war against the crime' of military regime. After such policy, those who used disclaimers were usually small-sized loan sharks and they made people to sign those simply in order to threat them. Loan sharks are usually fully aware those disclaimers are just for threat, and they cannot force those poor people to really give up on their bodies. Thanks to above-mentioned 'war against the crime' and highly negative image on gangsters in South Korea, police are especially merciless on gangster crime. If the victims of loan sharks like Gi-hun report on police, they can easily get help from police and such disclaimers of rights are completely useless. About organ trafficking, organ trade is strictly regulated in South Korea. Organ trade for financial reason is restricted. If you want to do organ trade illegally, you need doctors and hospitals that cooperate with you, but South Korea has universal health care system that government oversees, it is difficult for doctors and hospitals to engage in such illegal activities. Even many South Koreans believe that illegal organ trafficking widely take place in Korea, but there are just many urban legends, not really true news stories. Besides, signing such disclaimer of physical rights and organ trafficking in South Korean TV shows are cliche to illustrate that a protagonist is financially desperate. I guess the director of the Squid Game just used the cliche. (South Korean TV viewers will easily get it)
Oohhh interesting choice to add - I know you all are busy, but if you get to do more in-bar reactions with the more of the crowd I recommend to you all some Ted Lassooooo!
Quick tips for the Americans who's going to watch Squid Game: 1. Other countries (including South Korea) have strict gun laws. So when we see a gun in a vending machine, it must be fake. 2. To convert the currency from won to USD, simply remove three 0s. So when they said Gi-hun has 160,000,000 in debt, it means his debt is $160,000.
OMFG the chipmunk-cheeks thing killed me hahahahahahaha 😂 Nearly spit out my coffee, hahahahah Oh and - although you'd never know it from this show - Lee Jung-jae (Seong Gi-hun) is fookin' RIPPED. Look up some images.
