- Camp San Carlos 1873 - 1900
Jan 2020 - From Globe to San Carlos Reservoir.
I was surprised to find a memorial, and that it was very nice. Unfortunately there is evidence of alcohol use everywhere.
This stop is part of my 3 day 2 night "fort loop" from Tonto Basin. Through Tonto Basin to Globe and the 70 south into San Carlos. Down the 70 further south to "Red Knolls" and Klondyke Rd. Taking Klondyke SW through a pass north of Mount Graham to Bonita Aravaipa Rd, then connecting with Fort Grant Road into Wilcox. From there to Benson then north on N Casabel Rd to Mammoth. From Mammoth north to Winkelman, up the 77 past Christmas, and finally back to Globe.
My family lived at Coolidge Dam in the early '60s. My dad was an operator at the power house. The little houses above the dam in the mountain are gone now. Our nearest town was Peridot, pronounced "pair-a-dot" and peridot stones really do come from there.
Thank you for sharing that!
I've been 2 that place it was cool 2 c 4 me cuz I'm an Apache but I never thought 2 look back at the old San Carlos. Also did u know when u pass San Carlos dam and then u drive 2 the back of the mountain and turn around u can c a face in the mountain that look like Geronimo if I remember I think he was an Apache chief. Also back then the Apaches used 2 live where the lake is now
It was a total surprise to me there was anything there, because like you said I figured it was all under water. I think I used old pictures and maybe read something that brought me to this location. And I've heard of Geronimo face, or pass, in the white Mountain area by Fort Apache but not around the dam. I planned on seeing the dam sometime so I'll look out for Geronimo's face there. Thanks!
Wow, I never knew they had this area. I really enjoy traveling with you.
We traveled through San Carlos a lot from the 70s to 2003.
While traveling through in the 90s we went to Coolidge Dam.
Is that part of the Coolidge Dam area?
My parents had a ranch in Cliff NM. We always traveled the 70 then taking what used to be the Hwy 666, now the 191, up the 78 through Mule Creek onto the NM 180.
The drive from California to my parents was so beautiful and scenic compared to traveling the 10 East.
I never knew either! Yes this is the area of Coolidge Dam, at the other side of the water where I was at. I don't know any history on the monument, for all I know it could have been built after your visits.

Well we went to the dam itself. I don't remember seeing a glimpse of it where you were. I think we were on pavement the whole time too so I couldn't tell exactly where you were at.
It's really nice that they have those monuments.
@@5wheels521 At some point during the drone footage i will circle in blue the area where old Camp San Carlos was located. That is the dam from where I'm at. I turned off of the (you are correct) paved road that leads to it.
GREAT job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you glad you enjoyed the vid!
Very cool! How do you like your truck camper?
Your name reminds me of the older brother in Weird Science, Chet Donnelly. I saw that movie when it came out and this is the only other time in my life I have heard that name again. So congratulations on that. :)
Anyway, the camper has provided me with everything I could ask for from something that small in the bed of my Tacoma. You don't want be forced to spend all day in one but its good shelter with a large bed and a heater! I defiantly love having it.
@@MikeDonner Yeah. If I had a nickel for every time someone mentioned that movie…:) Do you mind me asking how long is your truck bed and the brand of your camper? Thanks!
@@chetmakowski463 Its a 6' bed and the brand if Four Wheel Camper, Fleet model. They aint cheap. They have a 5' version I think, and they came out with a shell model that gives you the bed over your cab and the same pop up, but inside its just your bare truck bed. The slide in is nice because u can take it off, but the trucks tailgate is off and there are two large brackets on the bed floor.
@@MikeDonner Thanks!
