EDIT: The buzz in this video during some of the playing was due to a lack of a power conditioner.
Hey everyone! Today we're finally reviewing my Schecter Corsair semi-hollow bass. This thing came out of left field and shocked a seemingly stagnant semi-hollow market. Featuring some killer passive EMG pickups and a two band preamp, is this the best semi-hollow out there? Let's find out!
Big thanks to Dom @ ThirdFloorGuitars for setting up my instruments. You can find him at www.thirdfloorguitars.com

Thanks low end lobster, you tipped the scales for me. I just pulled the trigger on a brand new Schecter Corsair bass expecting it in about 5 days. I was comparing the Schecter corsair, the Aria pro tab classic, and the Warwick star bass. I played one of the German made Warwick star bases a few years ago and loved it but can't warm up to the China Warwick's. The Aria tab classic is nice but I can't live with one Volume One tone and a pickup selector, however, would like to see you do a review on one. So thanks again and to one of your commenters who bought a Corsair and backed up everything you said about the bass. Enjoy your vids keep up the great work.
Quick update on my Schecter Corsair Purchase...Lobster was 100% right about everything. And I mean Everything. I love the Bass. It sounds and plays amazing. Probably the most versatile Semi Hollow Bass out there, which is what Lobster said, and thats what caught my eye, and thats why I own the Bass. Thanks Lobster, I never would have thought, but it's bad ass, I'm gonna have years of fun because of your video!!! I owe you a Beer.
So glad to hear it, Ray! My corsair is at a friend's house and he is sharing your sentiments! Enjoy :)
Hi / just wonder if you are facing any hum noises with your bass? Specially with the treble EQ all the way up Thanks !!!
I am getting this on the g string. Could be the strings. I have not put flat wounds on.
Had me at Jazz neck profile😁. The ebony fingerboard, graphite reinforcement rods, and EMG pickups are all awesome features on such an affordable bass. Great review Lobster🤘🤘🤘
Thanks Victor! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Nice grooving. Schecter really does make some gems.
Also, nice jack stratton shorts.
LOL Thank you :)
Because of your review I took a chance and purchased this bass. Thanks for your great honest review.
Awesome! Enjoy it, Ray!
because of your excellent review video on this bass, I am going to buy one of these! Thank you my friend
Thank you for watching :)
I like the more ‘vintage’ tone of the Jack Casady. The Schecter is one helluva instrument mind!
Indeed. The Schecter, though great, isn't a keeper for me. The JC I have has been mine for almost a decade, and has personal value to me hehe. However, if I were looking between them nowadays and had to choose one, I'd probably end up with the Schecter. The bridge screws pulling out of the body was a major issue, even mine started to have it before Dom fixed it and installed the hipshot bridge.
What's up Crawdaddy? I like this bass. I like the knobs and the truss rod cover is fine, plus it's got a cool fleur de lis logo. I was relieved to see the bridge is not a 3 point bridge that everybody complains about.
Lobster, I have watched this vid of yours and that on the Reverend Fatfish 32. Both great reviews as always! Which do you prefer? I am leaning towards pulling the trigger on the Fatfish but would like your thoughts if you get a chance to reply. Keep up the great work my friend! Glad you're back by the way!
Can you tell the difference in a hollow bass vs a solid bass?
Great video! Keep it up man!🦞👍
One you can look into, the other you can only look at ;P
Years of research, it’s all coming together now.
Thanks Lobster ;)
I've been looking to buy a bass to accompany my Ibanez AS-73 semi-hollow guitar in my home studio, and I've gone from eyeballing the Guild Starfire I ($599) to the Jack Casady ($799) to this ($999).
You owe me a beer!
Just kidding, but as a first comment;
Epic channel with really smooth groove and properly taking into consideration EVERYTHING one might wonder (nor wouldn't have even thought about) if it wasn't for Dr. Zoidberg's right claw.
Thanks for awesome the reviews and giving a lot of insight buying my first bass.
So glad you've enjoyed the videos and found em helpful! I just snagged a new MIC Jack Casady, it needed a LOT of work. Will be doing a review and comparison with my 2013 MIK model :). Going to hopefully revisit the Guild this year as well. Great basses those Starfire I's, and the Corsair is sweet too
Never seen this bass before, but I love it! Wish I had a need for a 4-string, I would snap one up in a second.
Only thing I don't like is the headstock, its more in keeping with a metal-style guitar than a semi-hollow "vintage" looking bass.
Thanks Eddie! We have another vid featuring this bass against the Guild Starfire I coming in the near future ;) stay tuned!
@@LowEndLobster Nice one, Lobster. Love your channel!
Nice review!!
Thank you my friend!
Hey Mr Lobster. That bass has some really good tones and usability. I'll have to consider it for some vintage style music.
Nice sound! beautiful bass
Thanks Ruben!
The problem with the 3-point Gibson-style bridge (anchor pull-out) is not so much that it's a dumb design-it is-but rather that many users don't know how to adjust the relative heights of the tiny front support and the larger back/side supports. Adjust them the wrong way and you get too much of a vertical force vector on the back/side supports and they can want to lift off the top. Adjust them the right way, and most of the force is along the string line and the anchors stay right where they are. Correct adjustment, unfortunately, can be a bit counter-intuitive so you see lots of anchors hauled out. You can try to solve the problem with glue and so on, but correct adjustment-or a really nice Hipshot replacement-is the real solution. [Always enjoy your work, my friend. I'm keeping my Jack Cassidy, though. For years I had the Jack-recommended Blue Steel strings on it, but recently went to D'Addario black tapewounds to very good effect.]
For some reason. The way the Schecter’s handle dynamics, made you sound like a better bass player than what the E one did. Maybe the E is more voiced for heavier playing. Great video, thanks!
Thanks Jorge!
Very cool review. Keeem coming
Thanks James!
I was super skeptical going in that the Corsair could win me over - it sounded a little too electric in the first look video and versatility is not something I care much about in the context of a semi-hollow. But hearing the two side-by-side and I think I actually prefer the sound of the Corsair. Great video!
Thanks Rabonour! I have another video of this bass coming soon :)
I ordered one and am very excited though it's in backorder now unfortunately.
I think you mentioned In the comments the Jack Casady hardshell case fits it nice?
Congrats Skyler! Yes, the JC case fits this bass perfectly. I actually just sold it recently and the buyer actually had me buy a new JC case to ship it.
@@LowEndLobster good to know. Just ordered a Corsair. Do you know if it will fit in a Mono M80 bag?
No idea, only ever used the Jack Casady case with this
@@LowEndLobster Hi Lobster! You sold me on this bass as I want a semi-hollow to add to my collection. I am in my mid 50's and only began playing about 15 months ago. Planning to pull the trigger on the Corsair. Just curious why you sold the Corsair and keep the Epiphone JC.
@MattMcGunn30 I've had my JC (limited edition silver burst) for like 12 years. Lots of sentimental value there
I like the bridge pick-up, sounds good. Does the edge where you lay your right arm on the top of the bass fell uncomfortable?
Not particularly. I know what you mean, this one did not dig into my arm at all. Very comfortable to play, but everyone's different. I'd try one for yourself to be sure.
That tone is godly.
Thanks! Yeah this thing thumps
Wonder if you can buy the knobs for the Corsair guitar for it. I have the original Les Paul Signature bass and I haven’t noticed bridge issues yet. Wonder if it’s an Epiphone or a set up issue.
I've been wanting a hollow/semi-hollow for a while now, and not a short scale. I have a tab open and ready for me to click "Buy" on the Schecter. But you had to play the Jack Casady...
Hehehe, it's a tough choice! The Schecter is more versatile and doesn't need a new bridge. The hipshot upgrade for the Epi is a must. Tonally, the Epi doesn't have as wide of a tonal palette, but it does what it does well. If I were shopping for a hollowbody now and didn't have both, I'd get the Schecter IMO. That being said, I love my JC.
Hi - is it my impression or you faced some hum noise ? Thanks
Need to check out the Ibanez Artcore AGB 200 I have Labella tape wounds on it. I love it!
NIce review! I'd like to listen how it sounds with roundwounds
Thanks Facu!
Hi dear friend with claws!
That's a really nice creamy tone, you sadùid that this golden beauty features some passive EMG on it: are these the HZ humbuckers or a completey new model?
(I've switched to this new account, I suppose that you know who I am :D).
Cheers,
Jöe
Hey Jöe! This bass is using the EMG TBHZ pickups, thunderbird pickups from EMG. Same pickups used as the Schecter Ultra reissue. They're very nice.
Great video! I already own a Schecter Tempest guitar for 14 years, and still love playing. But performing as a bass player more often, I'm looking for a semi hollow. This looks promising. Have you tried a Guild Starfire II yet?
Thank you! I haven't tried the guild yet but it's definitely on the list!
@@LowEndLobster Fantastic, I look forward to it!
How does the size of the body compare to the Warwick Starbass? I just bought a Starbass but it’s very uncomfortable to play standing up due the position of the strap lock button . I’m considering this Corsair but that body looks huge lol
Great playing , great demo... Just not wild about the tapewound strings. Would love to hear it w half wounds .
Thanks Charles! Never really messed with half wounds. Any brands you recommend?
Lovely tone with flats. Do semi-hollow basses sound nice in a quiet room with no amp? (I am wondering if there is some function beyond styling.)
Thank you! Honestly, not really. I have another bass that does however. My Epiphone Masterbilt De Luxe. Very nice acoustic that takes flats and sounds nice.
for Simon Gallup (the Cure) - takin it out on 22 Euro tour
Boomy or punchy 🥊 this bass is just amzing i am in love have a superior bass day buddy 😃☕
Would it be fair to compare this to the Guild Starfire 1 or are they that different?
Enjoy your channel very much.
Thanks.
I commented on this the other day, but I must have screwed it up....not the 1st time..but...
Anyway.. I think we talked about this one before?? I agree, Schecter does seem to be "stepping" up their stuff. I think it looks like, if you were looking to get hollow/or semi hollow bass, You can't really go wrong. It is lucky that they don't hold their value, makes getting a used one well worth it. New, is really steep for a bass that looses a couple to few hundred dollars as soon as it leaves the store. But I'm a person that feels "buy an instrument because it feels good to you, not your peers" and it looks like this bass is a player/workhorse. I don't know why I thought I need to say all of this. I think it was just fun pushing buttons and making words. Now that I've done that I think I will slowly back up into the shadows. Cheers and thank you for sharing.
Dude comments have been randomly disappearing, it's definitely not you. Schecters have gotten better with their residuals, and there's usually a little flexibility with certain vendors. This bass is definitely a workhorse like you said. The neck is super easy to play, makes it a pleasure to mess with. Thanks for your great comment my friend :)
This is the coolest bass for the price imo just wish there was a 3 eq setup and maybe a pickup toggle
Is there a case or a decent gig bag to go with this?Either way great playing & good review.
TBH I don't remember. I have some shelves where I store all my cases (and there's a lot), and I have no idea whether or not this game with one. Just checked the sites and it says case sold separately. My JC came with a nice hard case.
@@LowEndLobster I assume if its active there is some kind of tone block inside for the battery & to anchor the bridge into?
@@karadordarkraven Battery cavity is on the back (on the tone block) and there is the tone block running throughout.
@@LowEndLobster I'm just going to have to buy one!The only thing I would have liked is a pick up selector but its not that important.
I'm getting mine in BLACK!!!!!
Those flats are awesome! What flats do you recommend for a vintage, grainy sound?
Thanks! I've been a big fan of LaBella deep talkin flats personally
@@LowEndLobster that is what I use as well. Have em on my SRMS805
This is gonna be my Christmas gift this year, same color! Just began playing bass this time last year at 53 years old. It is my new passion! I am gonna grab this one and put some Thomastik-Infield JF344 rounds on it.
Lobster, what size la Bella’s FW would you recommend? 45-105s?
Yup
Sorry, follow up on your FW La Bella's. Are those XLs or Standard Length? Thanks L.
In the active mode, it nearly eliminates the need for a Jazz bass, which I really like. Passive is not to shabby, as well.
Is the preamp always on and often needing a new 9v battery?
Schecter is on-point man. They don't get the credit they deserve from non-metal players more often than not.
Agreed! They just need to fix their truss rod covers... Designed by Michael in accounting.
@@LowEndLobster i'm going to make one for the apocalypse with a biohazard symbol and gas mask printed on black ebony
@@TheBeardofDOOM That sounds SICK. Way better than "C-5 Apocalypse" in Arial ;P
@@LowEndLobster maybe i'll put the HLK dick... Err... Bomb to symbolize the apocalypse trigger 😁
@@TheBeardofDOOM LOOOOL Bombs away XD
Hi / thanks for the review / did you face any hummm noise ? Thanks
Hello! I believe the noise in this vid was due to a lack of a power conditioner at the time. EMG stuff is usually always dead quiet :)
@@LowEndLobster Thanks for that !!! Really struggle with hum noise instruments ...
Hi Lobster. Picked one of these up, partly based on your review. Love the Tones, feel and all around setup.
Unfortunately, I am having trouble intonating the E string. It just maxes out at the back.
I tried reversing the saddle and it helped a bit...but still slightly sharp.
Any suggestions.
Thanks
Hi RG! Congrats on your new bass. Unfortunately I don't really have much for you other than adjusting the bridge or contacting the shop/schecter for a replacement. The one I had didn't have issues, but yours sounds like it does. I wish I could be more helpful, but I hope you get it sorted.
@@LowEndLobster Hey, thanks for the reply. I did manage to work it out. It took a slight
bit of filing on the E saddle to get it just right.. I did contact Schecter and they were quick to respond.
All good now!
So, what's the deal with the Schecter clicking whenever it looked like your index finger hit the pickup? The Casady didn't do that....
I would love to hear what this bass sounds like without flats and with a pick.
I would too ;P.... just not me playing... you don't want to hear me with a pick... trust me ;P
@@LowEndLobster I love when someone knows their limitations.
How many basses you got Lobster? I know you got 3or4 FGNs that I'm jealous of,lol The Schecter sounds amazing btw
Thanks! I have... a lot ;P.
I like them both but i would choose the Schecter because it is a more versatile w/two pickups.
Thanks Glenn! I have another video featuring this Schecter on Friday :)
Nice. Would love to hear it with some Black Beauties
Thanks Thomas! I've never been much of a fan of those strings, I don't like how they feel (but that's just me and I'm a weirdo).
I’love it if you did a comparison with the Ibanez afb200. I’m looking for a hollow body to mainly play jazz
I have an afb for about 4 years now andI play it everyday. Good bass , good vintage tone.
I have on, with flats, and it's a definite "boomer". Looking at the Corsair for added tonal choices.
Nice reefs! the trebel is too noisie, at least for me.
Thanks Ivan! Yeah I noticed the buzz during editing. Treble @ 50% is where it's at :)
Thank God it's a bass
So it's better on long scale string rather than medium scale ?
Yeah that’s pretty sweet
Thanks!
Why such buzzy treble
Sounds very good
How much does yours weigh?
I think it's just the preamp treble control boosting high frequencies from lights and stuff, not sure. Either way, I would keep that at 50 and below. Thank you my friend! Mine is 8.6 lbs
@@LowEndLobster the apocalypse is really sensative to interference too. Playing near my computer with 9 fans and a water pump is an atrocity
You have great reviews on lesser known models, great for us, but bad for my bank account and credit score. 😛
LOL Thanks Mike!
06:20 thanks thats all I ever wanted. 😀
You talk about the knobs but you don't talk about what they do I guess they're just volume and tone but I don't get how you switch between pickups?? Thx!
Is there actually a case available for this bass?
Jack Casady case works perfectly - I sold this to my friend and shipped it using that case with no issues. Perfect fit :)
EXPENSIVE!!!
Jack casady have no 3 capacitors, it have 3 different impedances based on an inductor
Thank you for the correction!
An active semi-hollow bass. Some people say EMGs sound sterile, but at least in case of this bass…I think they’re wrong.
Indeed! I've played my fair share of EMG letdowns, but these are great pickups.
Dude ... you know Schecters are bass porn to me...🥺 Nice review anyhow 🦞 🤣😂🤣
Hahaha glad you uhhh.... enjoyed it ;P
one thing i couldnt help to wonder if the hipshot bridge like on your jack casady would work on the consair. i like that bridge better. also do you have suggestions for a replacemt for the cover on the head stock i agree it could use somthing little nicer. besides that. only think i dont care for is the strap button on the horn instead of behind the neck like the jack and other basses of this style. oh since i never used a pre amp. does it still work as well or close without the battery? oh one more thing do you suggestion for a case since sadly dont come with one, which for the price they should include one. thanks for the video. i wouldnt known about this bass if i didnt come across it.so thank you again.
Hi Michael! I don't think there's any hipshots for this model as it's using a tune-o-matic style two piece bridge. There may be some aftermarket options out there, but IMO not as big of a deal here as I wasn't seeing the same issues like I saw with the stock Jack Casady bridge, where the three point bridge slowly gets ripped out of the body over time.
@@LowEndLobster
well they do make this but as you can see only half could maybe work. if you can and thank you for replying to my comment. if you can give me your thoughts on that bridge. hipshotproducts.com/collections/bass-bridges/products/4-string-d-style-bass-bridge?variant=43154629128
